Book Description
Artist Mary Whyte has learned many lessons over the years--lessons about art and, perhaps more important to her, lessons about life.
Customer Reviews:
Lotus Blossoms and Sunflowers.......2006-07-28
"I like to arrive early in the morning at the pond so that I can watch the lotus flowers open before noon." ~ Mary Whyte
Mary Whyte's art has been exhibited by art galleries and has been collected by museums. She is also the author of Watercolor for the Serious Beginner and has illustrated children's books. I think the reason people love her art is because of the spiritual elements she is able to capture in watercolor. She also adds a magical dimension with color, like she adds blue to the steam from the pan on a stove. The sky burns in a rosy orange as a beautiful woman holds sunflowers.
What I love most about her paintings is the use of blue colors to warm the moments. She also has an expert eye for capturing reflections in water. Her "Moon Over the Meadow" makes you wish you were there, bathed in the blue silvery light.
Mary Whyte's paintings are all beautiful expressions of detailed observation, but where she truly excels is when she paints beautiful women in fields of flowers. They are just stunning.
The beauty of this book is not only the artwork; it is also in the poetic writing and artist comments. Like a diary of experience, Mary Whyte explores landscapes, discusses specific ways she captures moments and is a true teacher in the way she explains how you can create your own watercolor magic. An Artist's Way of Seeing is a true inspiration and rare find!

Ars Longa..........2000-12-30
Even a cursory reading of "Leonardo's Ink Bottle" provides a rare glimpse into the mind of a working artist. Is is unusual to find an artist who excels in a variety of media and can as easily express herself in language as in paint or clay. The author's encyclopaedic knowledge of the arts and her craft of writing make her a wonderfully adept interpreter for those of us with a modest understanding of what drives a fully realized artist. Her approach to a life in art is as a process of spiritual discovery requiring the engagement of all the faculties: the eye that sees, the mind that conceives, the heart that feels and the hand that wields the brush or the pen to create something of beauty and value. The suggestions in Weir's book are drawn from her own life in the practice of art and are designed to take us beyond the conditioned framework of thought. These sharings of the journey to the wellsprings of creativity are a useful guide for the open-minded individual. This type of broad renaissance worldview is in such short suppply in our era that Weir's voice sounds a refreshing counterpoint, one that is not mawkish, new-agey or sentimental.
Introduction (only) to art.......2000-07-04
The budding (junior high to high school) artist may find this a nice thought provoking gift, but the experienced artist will find little to nourish them here. I found some of the explanations somewhat simplistic and the language of the book itself is somewhat like the type of poetry you read and cannot remember a word of the next moment.
A good book for the newcomer to art..........1999-12-04
but nothing new for the artist. That said, the book is nevertheless well written. The style is reminiscent of the creative flow experience itself. This book does a good job helping the newbie to understand what flow feels like and how to obtain that state. The exercises are very practical and tend to balance the "flow-like" text. I loved the illustrations. I keep going back to the book just to look at the art work.
Enchanting yet practical! One to savour.......1999-11-18
Roberta Weir has given visual artists a wonderful, enchanting work. She offers us not only a way of seeing but a way of being: open, receptive and true. It is a subtle blend of insight, very practical sugggestions for nurturing and developing one's creative work and selections of her fine drawings. It's wise, multi-layered and moving. I love this book. For visual arts students I would also recommend The Blank Canvas by Anna Held Audette.
Magnificiently written, well researched, unusual!!!.......1998-03-30
Wonderful first book by a great American artist of the 20th century. Most unusual ability to make the reader understand a way to view the world in a most innocent (unbiased) way. A must read for any one searching for an understanding of one's own mind and the workings of the visual world.

A Real Educational Book - that I loved!.......2006-09-26
Hazel Harrision has created a wonderful art instruction book that delivers more than I realized it would. Drawing, watercolour, oil & acrylic and pastel - just some of the sub areas of this book. It really will teach you somethng. I thought I was kind of an artist and after going through this book I found how much I did not know. I really needed this book.
I highly recommend this book as a gift to any budding artist in your life. No matter on little or how much they know - this book will be of value. It really is one great teaching tool. It is like taking a class on art.

Wyland Paint Kit.......2007-01-10
My 8 year old granddaughter did very well with the drawing part. She still does not seem to be interested in the painting yet. I think 8 years old is a little young for most for this type of kit. They are still in the watercolor stage, which for them is easier.
Great for Kids.......2003-05-25
Although I am 25 years old, I bought this book because I love Wyland's work and was curious about how he drew his sea creatures. It came with brushes, some acrylic paints, drawing paper, pencils, and a book giving instruction on how to draw and paint (all in a hard cover folder). It is definetly worth the price and would be a great start up book for kids interested in sea art.

This should be THE digital video textbook.......2002-06-11
This book is packed with technical information about the digital video format. Extremely detailed and thorough, it is a must-have for anyone with a serious interest in digital video. The chapters on digitized compression and image capture are priceless from the aspect of digital editing. However, because the information is so technical it is not a good book for a beginner who is still learning how to operate his or her camera.
This book is almost perfect!.......2000-06-10
This book does a great job of explaining video concepts. You will love how Poynton starts with the basics, explains them, builds and then gets down to the nitty gritty (even down to the mathematical formulas). This book is complete & consistent.
It's perfect for technical folks who didn't know much about digital video (that was me) but needed a detailed understanding & explanation. I also think it's great for intermediate-advanced because they can always use this book as a reference. A co-worker of mine who is a video expert looked through it and was impressed. He wished there was a book like this back when he was learning.
It would have been nice if there was a section on digital video compression though.
If you deal with computer graphics or video, this book is strongly recommended........1998-06-19
An excellent reference book. Covers a variety of computer graphics as well as analog and digital video topics. Includes a very good chapter on filtering and sampling, giving an in depth explanation of aliasing effects. I recommended this book in one of my recent JavaWorld "Media Programming" columns.

Book Description
There's a girl in the hotel lobby. Long legs in a red dress. Scar at the edge of her mouth, body like a knife. I buy her a drink and wake up with staples in my side. "Don't worry," she says. "You only need one."
Disgraced junkie cop turned apocalyptic antihero Phineas Poe emerges from a psych ward on Christmas Eve and tumbles for beautiful predatory Jude, streetwise assassin turned organ thief. After one night together, she cuts him open, leaves him to fate. Reborn in a bath of ice, Phineas tracks Jude from the back alleys of Denver across the Texas desert for a violent showdown that leaves them on the run to Mexico and the debauched playgrounds of California's elite. Descend into a nightmare realm where every act of perversion finds willing disciples. Enter a world of brutal blood sport, murderous role play, existential snuff films. Lines between victim and accomplice blur past recognition only to be redrawn according to violent whim. The myth of Orpheus is deconstructed on a razorblade as Phineas and Jude chase each other through a hell of their own making.
PHINEAS POE is equal parts noir romance, revenge fantasy, suicide pact, urban myth exploded, and nihilistic tragedy.
Customer Reviews:
Decent, entertaining, but .......2007-08-16
As the back cover of the book states, these three novels read like a feverish dream. The writing doesn't include typical grammar structure like quotation marks but instead flows very smoothly as if from another world. There is rampant drug/alcohol usage which sometimes makes things seem a little depressing, but otherwise the stories are entertaining.
Overall, the book is an easy read. It's entertaining but not altogether fulfilling. Hell's Half Acre was probably the best, mainly because it made some sort of sense. The characters from the first two novels didn't really seem to be based in any kind of coherent reality.
Just my .02. I walked away after finishing the book saying "What was the point?"
Devastating Beauty.......2007-07-15
There are some authors who, when you read them, can crush your confidence in your own writing. They are so perfectly in control of their craft, their prose so utterly devastating in its perfect beauty, that you put down the book and say, "Well, crap. I'll never be THAT good." Will Christopher Baer is one such author.
That his prose is not only beautiful, but can also be dark, witty, and down right violent, only heightens the pleasure for me.
There are sentences in this collection that will make a fellow writer stop to catch their breath. It's the equivalent of going to MoMA and standing in front of a masterpiece.
I await Godspeed with the utmost of anticipation.
The Phineas Poe collection is a winner.......2007-05-10
I found all three books fun to read, intellectually fascinating, and a bit addictive. A must read for any noir fan, and an intrigue for any reader. Unusual storyline, characters, and plot twists. Will Baer has a unique writing style that adds to the flavor of the novels. Excellent service on the part of Amazon, aswell.
Strange happenings..........2007-02-20
So Phineas is an ex-cop turned junkie because someone took his liver. Weird plot, weird stories. The collection is of all 3 Phineas Poe novels by Will Christopher Baer. While I personally am not into the somewhat graphic sex scenes, they make things a little more interesting at times. If you're into crime, sex, drugs, and having your kidney cut out, along with going into a strange world of sex and overall oddities, check this out. It's a good read through and through.
Not Bad, Not Brilliant.......2007-02-06
I thought this book was going to be phenominal. And, to be fair, it started out with just the right amount of dark atmosphere and stylistic flair that I thought this book would surely be a must read. Unfortunately, after the excitement of Baer's words wear off, there isn't much actual plot to come by in this novel. Furthermore, whatever plot can be found is sometimes unexciting and hard to follow, allbeit interesting. I can say I'd recommend the first of this trilogy, Kiss Me Judas, to almost anybody, what with it's pinache and storyline. Both of these elements remain new and fresh throughout the whole book, and are the strongest they feel throughout all three of Baer's novels. However, once you get two books deep, his style and often insane plots feel more worn out than new and exciting.

Fans of Will Christopher Baer's first novel, Kiss Me, Judas, have already met Phineas Poe: defrocked cop, former morphine addict, part-time psychotic, and a man who has lost his heart to a woman who left him in a tub full of ice, one kidney shy of the standard allotment. Poe knows a bad day when he sees one:
The thing is that my consciousness drifts and I have forgotten what I look like. I pass my reflection in a blackened window and I may not recognize myself. My reflection is perceived as a threat, an ugly twin. My reflection is a dark nonperson, a stranger on the street and this is not an identity crisis as I understand the phrase.
The bad days are back in Baer's second noir offering (and book two of his Poe trilogy), Penny Dreadful. Fresh from his surgical unpleasantness and eager to start a new life in Denver, Poe contacts a former colleague, Detective Moon, who shares with Poe the drunken admission that several handfuls of Denver's finest are missing. Among them is Moon's dearest friend, Detective Jimmy Sky.
When Poe agrees to look for Sky, things quantumly shift from bad to gross as he uncovers the gothish Game of Tongues, a freakishly cruel and narcotically fueled live action role-playing game (think Dungeons and Dragons in leather and chains), the object of which is to seek, suck, sever, and swallow the tongues of fellow players. Deaths ensue--imagine that!--and things spiral down from there.
Slim, existential, and darkly humorous, Penny Dreadful is a challenging (the point of view slides like Jackie Robinson, and if you prefer your dialogue with quotation marks you'd better bring your own) but beautiful train-wreck of a book that constantly dares the reader to look away. But if you don't look at the twisted metal, you'll never see the art. --Michael Hudson
Book Description
When Phineas Poe is enlisted by his old ally, Detective Moon, to find a missing cop named Jimmy Sky, he is drawn into the Game of Tongues, a violent fantasy game played by the disaffected and delusional in the punk clubs, rooftops, and sewers of Denver. With everyone he meets possessing multiple personalities and his own identity slipping away, Poe realizes if he can hang on to his sanity long enough to find Jimmy Sky, he might just beat the game.

Wonderfully Psychotic.......2007-01-18
Will Baer's 3 books go together in some strange, twisted series. If you like Chuck Palahniuk, and his twisted writings, you'll love Baer's stuff. Crazy plots, great writing style, dramatic twists, crude images, and a little bit of love.
I recommend these books to everyone
Dark, surreal, poetic, brilliant, and worthwhile.......2005-11-22
Someone has written "Dark Poetry." This could not be more accurate. PENNY DREADFUL is one of the most starkly beautiful books ever to come out. That said, I have to admit that I haven't yet read "Kiss Me, Judas," but plan to get it sometime this week. Back to PD: Surreal and fresh, this book nevertheless disturbs on so many levels---any good book will. But what makes it truly unique is the way the author's mind works-you can literally see the wheels turning; not in a bad way; and it's not at all predictable. If you want a touch-feely "feel-good" book, this is not it. But it is great fiction by a very talented writer who I hope we see more of.
If you enjoy the works of Chuck Palahinuk, Jackson McCrae, Bret Easton Ellis, and other "new age" writers, then this is the book for you.
A Surreal And Fantasian View Of Skid Row.......2005-07-21
Really when I think about it, I found Penny Dreadful to be a mediocre sequel to Kiss Me, Judas, but that could just be that Kiss Me, Judas was a like the experience with a new drug, one never gets that high you got the 1st time. I was probably just the absence of Jude and the missing descriptive torrid sex that came along with Jude, that failed to draw me in as much.
That's not to say that I didn't think Penny Dreadful wasn't an excellent novel, full of surrealism and noir tendencies, fuzzy transitions and other worldly characters who prance about in a stress, drug and sub-conscious induced haze. Numb to the world around them and their plural indentities, in and out of the game.
Phineas Poe our intrepid hero once again has found himself in a dangerous situation in the dregs of society, caught up in a web of drugs, fuzzy logic and dangerous individuals Poe must see through the B.S. which is much easier for him this go around without the morphine addiction and the whole coming to grips with his only having the one kidney.
Poe as a character seemed much more together, and a lot less confused in the 2nd Poe novel, which I greatly liked, he is a very excellently developed figure and I like him better without quite so much fog. Thats not to say that he isn't confused and disoriented several times in this novel, its just a little less.
Check it out, see what you think.
Confusing sequel, but..........2004-11-23
Still wonderful. I was intrigued by the dark poetry in Kiss Me, Judas, and it still continues in Penny Dreadful. Baer has a way with words that is striking and sometimes surprisingly horrific.
The incontinuity of the books kind of threw me off at first, but I soon sunk into the little drugged up world where the "Game of Tongues" exists. There are characters from Kiss Me, Judas, but the tale takes a complete 180. Baer feeds you sparse tidbits about the game and the culture to keep you guessing about what exactly is going on in perfect, psychotic prose.
In retrospect, I don't exactly see the point of the book in the trilogy except maybe to tie up some loose ends, character development, but it still is lovely as a stand-alone book, or as something to improve your grasp on Phineas Poe.
Great Sequel to Kiss Me, Judas.......2004-10-08
I just finished this book a day ago and it is definitely a worthy sequel to Kiss Me, Judas.
Following the story in Kiss Me, Judas Phineas Poe returns to Denver where it all begins and finds himself in a completely different world. People are playing a game called the 'game of tungues' which is slowly becoming real and reality is starting to slip.
This book is extremely different from Kiss me, Judas but not in a negative way at all. It mixes the noir genre from KMJ with sci-fi to create a great vibe and an incredible story. This book honestly had me on end until the last page.
I strongly recommend this book to any fans of: Will Christopher Baer, Chuck Palahniuk, Bret easton Ellis, Craig Clevenger, and any other author out there.
Book Description
Here's a delightful collection of G. K. Chesterton quotes from 1900 to 1911, one for each day of the year--all selected by Chesterton himself. Every word of his 1912 classic is in this newly typeset edition. There are also newly created notes shedding light on events from his day that have been dimmed by the passage of time. In addition, there is a bibliography of sources and a detailed 17-page index to guide you to the quotes you need. Finally, there are several humorous sketches by Chesterton.
This book was previously published in the U.K. in 1911 as A Chesterton Calendar and in the U.S. in 1912 as The Wit and Wisdom of G. K. Chesterton. It includes Chapter 13, "The Movable Feasts," which was left out of the U.S. edition.
Customer Reviews:
The quotes were selected by Chesterton himself, so they represent what he thought was important........2007-01-17
This book serves two purposes. It is intended to be a daily devotional (like Oswald Chambers "My Utmost For His Highest"), focusing on G. K. Chesterton's wit and wisdom. The quotes were selected by Chesterton himself, so they represent what he thought was important, as opposed to reading another person's second-guessings.
One good point is that it has moveable feasts in an appendix, like Lewis's "The Business of Heaven." A down point is that the book lacks an entry for Leap Day. This is a common mistake made by all devotionals I own, except for Chambers's. If you are smart enough to include the Roman Catholic feast days (which you would expect from Chesterton), then why can't you remember Leap Day? It is beyond me!
The second purpose of the book is an unintentional one. This book serves as a de-facto quote book. I love quote books, since they serve as random sampler for a person's thought. C. S. Lewis said, "The only use of selections is to deter those readers who will never appreciate the original, and thus save them from wasting their time on it, and to send all the others on the original as quickly as possible." (The Quotable Lewis, #447)
This book accomplishes both: it is a wonderful daily devotional, and it whets the appetite for more.

I bought this book for my grandmother and she loves it. It's hard for her to sit and read for a lond piriod of time. This book is nice because it has one little reading for every day. I would highly recomend this book.
