Raw brillance in pictures.......2000-06-27
Alice Neel's work is so contempory, so female, so raw. She was brilliant and very ahead of her time. She inspires me everday, and this book is marvelous. Full of quotes from her, her history, the best pictures.I so wish I had known her.
Beautiful Images.......2000-04-07
This is a wonderful edition to any art library. Beautiful color images, interesting narration.

Book Description
Alice Neel (1900-1984) was one of this century's most powerfully original portraitists. Her psychological vision as a painter of people has been described as both tender and unforgiving. This full-scale examination of her life and work accompanies a traveling retrospective organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art that celebrates the centennial of her birth and is the first major exhibition of her work since 1974.
From deeply personal paintings of her own family and neighbors to arresting portraits of important New York art-world figures like Andy Warhol, Robert Smithson, and Frank O'Hara, the 75 paintings and watercolors presented in this book hover disconcertingly between intimacy and monumentality and have an unforgettable impact. This centennial salute will focus renewed attention on one of the preeminent American artists of the 20th century.
175 illustrations, 100 in full color, 8 1/2 x 12"
ANN TEMKIN is curator of 20th-century art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. SUSAN ROSENBERG is assistant curator of 20th-century art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Alice Neel.......2007-01-06
This book has a wonderful selection of paintings and commentary by Alice Neel- I used to check it out from the library for months at a time until I realized I should just buy it because I kept using it as an important reference for my work. I love it!
Inspiring.......2000-11-19
Alice Neel has certainly inspired me to paint again. The book is wonderful and chronicles her personal story, along with paintings corresponding to those periods of her life and essays by those who knew her well. It's also a treat to get the insight of many of her famous sitters, including "Nancy". This book is also a catalogue of her work which accompanies her centennial exhibition touring the country. I can't wait to see her work up close and personal in 2001. This publication has wet my appetite to experience more and more of the artistry of Alice Neel.
This is a beautiful book!.......2000-10-10
I've compared this edition virtually plate by plate to the previous (1983 - Patricia Hills) edition and I must say that I find the selections as well as the quality of the color printing to be far superior in this edition. Perhaps if one found a first edition of the Patricia Hills publication this would not be the case. But I far prefer this edition and can find no reason to criticize it, other than having a vested or political interest.
1983- (Patricia Hills)Alice Neel monograph MUCH better!.......2000-07-31
This new monograph has been released to coincide with the Whitney's retrospective. Both the long over due retrospective and the new monograph are lacking in quantity and depth needed in doing justice to this amazingly prolific and important artist. Abrams' previous Neel monograph had many more images and excerpts of important interviews with Neel throughout the book (provided by the forsight of Patricia Hills.) The new book, under the Whitney museums' auspice, includes interviews with some of the sitters. While these anecdotes are interesting it doesn't make up for the total superiority of the 1983 monograph (reprinted in 1995.) If you can find a used version of the previous monograph, you would be wise to aquire it. I also recommend Pamela Allara's "Pictures of People, Alice Neel's American Portrait Gallery" which puts Neel's work in a cultural context (from the depression through the feminist movement.)
Book Description
In this generously illustrated and vibrant chronicle of the life and work of prolific painter and bohemian eccentric Alice Neel, Pamela Allara shows how portraits from a career spanning the 1920s to the 1970s constitute a virtual gallery of American cultural history. While some of Neel's portraits graced the covers of publications like Ms. and Time, most of her subjects were unknowns -- the marginalized, the disenfranchised, the oppressed.
"Every person is a new universe unique with its own laws," Neel once said, but these arresting images of Greenwich Village intelligentsia, of Latinos and Latinas from Spanish Harlem, of gay and lesbian writers and artists, also evoke a profound, if disquieting, sense of time and place. Neel, informed by left-wing politics and avant-garde modernism, infused portraiture with a new energy and relevance, rescuing her sitters for history and rendering them witnesses to their time.
Customer Reviews:
Lacks Color Images.......2000-04-08
The narration of this book seemed to be very useful and well researched, however, even though a great number of her paintings where present throughout the book, I would have preferred them be in color instead of black and white illustrations. That was most disappointing.
Customer Reviews:
"Two artists, two friends, two very different lives"--from jacket flap.......2005-10-20
A fascinating study of two women--close friends--who attended art school together, but whose paths then diverged widely. One woman, Alice Neel, became one of the greatest American painters of the 20th century. The other artist, Rhoda Medary, chose a different life as a housewife whose artworks remained obscure.
How and why these two painters traveled their respective paths makes for illuminating reading, especially for today's woman artist. The issues these women grappled with are far from being resolved in contemporary society: how a woman balances a career with marriage and/or motherhood; how an artist responds to pressure from family and culture to conform; how to follow your dream but still pay your bills. Highly recommended.

Book Description
If family is often considered the backbone of civilization, it has undergone serious rethinking over the past few decades. Most disciplines, from sociology to psychotherapy to economics, have had their turn at analyzing, theorizing and representing the family in all its many forms. In Family Ties, the relationships that bind families are explored via nearly 60 contemporary artists. Alice Neel paints mother daughter portraits; Nicholas Nixon photographs his wife and her three sisters every year for 25 years; Larry Fink documents the blue-collar Sabatines; Sanford Biggers and Jennifer Zackin, who grew up, respectively, in middle-class black Christian and white Jewish families, run parallel slide shows of their childhood Kodak moments; and Roger Shimomura renders pop images from the Japanese internment camps where his family spent part of his childhood. Published in conjunction with Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts and an exhibition opening there in June 2003. (Jun 21 - Sep 21.03)

Book Description
In 1856, the English photographer Francis Frith set out on the first of three tours of Egypt and the Holy Lands. Traveling up the Nile and then on to the Sinai, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon, Frith systematically crafted exquisite pictures of ruins, landscapes, and legendary sites. He then published his views in England and America in a variety of formats, becoming something of a celebrity in photographic circles. This book, the first to place Frith's Egyptian and Levantine images in cultural context, reveals the distinct meanings these ostensibly "topographic" pictures held for the photographer and his Victorian audience.
A Quaker by birth and an entrepreneur by nature, Frith brought to his photographic projects a sense of mission: to revive and confirm the stories of the Bible, while offering the region to armchair travelers as a seamless Oriental milieu of Romantic reverie. Francis Frith in Egypt and Palestine narrates the political, intellectual, and social concerns that make Frith representative of England's encounter with the East in the nineteenth century. Historian of photography Douglas R. Nickel brings a sophisticated interdisciplinary approach to bear on the subject in order to expose the complexity of Frith's image-making, setting the photographs against a Victorian backdrop of religious debate, imperialist thought, Romantic philosophy, and Pre-Raphaelite aesthetics.
Customer Reviews:
excellent writing, impressive scholarship.......2004-08-16
Though nicely illustrated, this is no mere picture book. Its real strength lies in its well written text and critical apparatus. Nickel's scholarship is impressive: the book combines a sophisticated approach to writing biography (Frith's) with just enough historical detail and Victorian cultural context to bring the ideas to life. Best suited to audiences operating above a fifth-grade reading level.
Dry text ..... Great Images.......2004-04-16
The text reads like a dry, doctoral dissertation that makes me thankful I didn't become a college professor. Passages like the following are prevalent throughout the book : "Moving from science to theology to philosophy and the intellectual history of the period, we can see how his photographic productions were explicitly motivated by the categorical imperative of religious faith." After translating this into "His images were based largely on his strong religious beliefs," you can, after some difficulty, get through the extremely burdensome text. The text also goes on multipe tangents trying to explain Victorian England, and the milieu that Frith lived in, but I found it overly burdensome and digressing.I found myself constantly trying to skip ahead of lengthy passages about Darwin's The Origin of Species and other digressing digressions.
The best aspect of the book is the images themselves. They are superbly produced with about as much detail from Frith's gigantic glass plates as I could expect a book to have. Frith was a rich man by the time he took his trips to the Middle East, and, whatever his motivations were, these images are historically important as well as having that Middle Eastern mystery I find fascinating. I wished that Nickel would have placed BOTH pairs of Frith's stereo slides into the book, rather than just one side and I also wish he had more images.

Book Description
Francis Frith began to take his striking photographs of rural Britain in 1860. Over the next 50 years, he and his team of photographers took thousands of pictures capturing the special charm of the British countryside—its churches and castles, its quaint villages and rolling hills, its peaceful vistas and haunted ruins, as well as its unpretentious, hard-working people. Now, side-by-side with contemporary photos taken a century or more later, these images offer an evocative record of a century of social change, as well as vivid testimony to Britain’s enduring beauty

In 1856 Francis Frith set out for Egypt, intending to photograph the great archeological finds of his day. He traveled by boat, on horseback, and by camel, carrying his bulky photographic equipment with him, and in the course of his wanderings he captured the stark majesty of some of the Middle East's greatest monuments. Now, 77 of his best photographs from Egypt have been compiled in one book, Egypt and the Holy Land in Historic Photographs. Here you'll find stunning images of a bygone era: the Sphinx buried up to its neck in sand; the Temple of Karnak before its rubble-choked halls were cleared; Luxor while it was still being used to store grain. The black-and-white photographs depict the wonder and grandeur of both the monuments and Egypt herself, while the accompanying text comments on the subject as it was in Frith's day and as it appears now. There's also an extensive foreword detailing Francis Frith's fascinating life.
Shutterbugs will appreciate the difficulty of Frith's work and his precise eye; armchair travelers will enjoy daydreaming about an age when grand tours were made by boat and rail, and almost any trip qualified as adventure travel. While it can be enjoyed and appreciated by most anyone, Egypt and the Holy Land will appeal particularly to photographers, travelers, and Egyptologists.

Photographs of a lost world.......2003-02-08
If the Egypt and holy land of the 19th century explorers interest you - or if you love David Roberts prints of Egypt and want to see what the temples look like from an objective view, then this book is for you. The photos presented here were taken by Francis Firth a Derbyshire photographer who travelled to Egypt and the middle east a number of times in the 1850's and 60's and recorded what he saw with these fantastic photographs.
The photos are all clear, beautiful shots, like the best of 19th century photography. You get to see views like The Pyramids of Giza and Dahshur, the temples of Dendera, Karnak, Luxor, Thebes and Edfu all buried in sand or in their "original" ruined 19th century state. In addition to the wonderful parade of Egyptian photos there are also scenes from Jerusalem, Gaza, the dead sea and Baalbek in Lebanon.
This is a wonderful book that takes you on a visual trip to the past. Recommended for anyone interested in Egypt or 19th century photography.

Two complete stories of women in bondage.
Book Description
Shambling their way from forgotten moss-covered crypts and freshly dug graves, they haunt the pages of the most notorious monster magazines of the 1970's. These are the forgotten zombies of horror comics and like their cinematic brethren they have a taste for warm, moist flesh - YOURS! Now, for the first time in over thirty years, IMP proudly unearths these gruesome tales from the pages of TERROR TALES, TALES FROM THE TOMB, TALES OF VOODOO, and THE WITCHES' TALES to release them on monster and comic fans alike. "Nightmares and art meet in classic form. . . these comics will show you the meaning of fear!" -- Frank Schildener, THE RIGHT HAND OF DOOM: A STUDY OF HELLBOY
Customer Reviews:
A must have for fans of the undead..........2007-09-10
Having recently finished reading MONSTER PLANET, I found myself browsing Amazon last week, and came across this gem of a graphic novel. Received it yesterday, and I have to say it was worth every penny! Besides bringing back a lot of good terrors from the 1970's fright mags like TALES FROM THE TOMB and THE WITCHES' TALES, it reminded me why I developed such a soft spot for the living dead.
A must have for any horror/comic book collector!
A lot of fun...and blood.......2007-07-18
I can't honestly say that I was a rabid horror fan as a child, but old comic books that I looked at in my preteens that were lurid, bizarre, twisted, and freaky were of some interest to me back then but now, with the opportunity to revisit some of the devious tales in this compilation, I regret that I was not more into them back in my youth. Never the less, I am pleased to have the chance to take a look at all these different short works of twisted genious. Sure, most of them don't have a very complicated story line but they are vivid, gruesome, and conveniently "bite" sized, if you will pardon the pun.
If you have an appreciation for horror comics at all or horror in general, this is a great little volume that despite being fairly graphic still brings back memories of a less jaded time and place, at least for me. This goes hand and hand with the some of the darkly malevolent monster movies of the fifties and sixties that I still love watching every now and then.
Zombie comics with teeth!.......2007-06-30
Back in the early seventies, after a long week of homework and chores I would ride my bike to the candy store to spend my 75 cents allowance on three Marvel comics. But when I got there, my eyes would wander to the magazine rack to spy the lurid monster magazines. I would never buy one because I knew my mother would throw it in the trash, and I was totally hooked on the exploits of Captain America, the Hulk, Spider-Man and the like. Now I am making up for lost time and collecting all things monster.
From the same publishers of Dick Briefer's THE MONSTER OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE ZOMBIE ZACTORY is a handsomely reproduced collection of diverse blood-splattering tales of reanimated corpses, who have acquired a taste for death and destruction. Zombies, ghouls, mummies, voodoo priests, mad scientists and skeletons perform all sorts of vicious acts in LIVING CORPSES, THE WALKING DEAD, SKULL IN A BOX, GHOULS GRAVEYARD, A JURY OF SKELETONS, GIVE ME BACK MY BRAIN, A CUP OF DEATH, THE HEAD SHRINKERS, THE HORROR DOLL, A CORPSE FOR A COFFIN, THE DEVIL'S ZOMBIE, EERIE BONES, CARELESS CORPSE, VOODOO TERROR, TERROR OF THE DEAD, THE ZOMBIES VAULT, A RING OF CORPSES, THE STRANGE ESCAPE, THE ZOMBIE BRIDE, NIGHTMARE MANSION, HANDS OF TERROR, THESLIMY MUMMY, THE OLD CRONE'S VOODOO, SWAMP MONSTERS, THE HEADLESS ONES, NAKED HORROR, and THE STRANGE FRIEND.
For just under 20 buck, the price of 6 Marvel comics today, this book is a steal! Pick it up fellow comic collectors and see what you have been missing.
A must for horror fans.......2007-06-26
If you like the Marvel Zombies or The Walking Dead, you will love these twenty-seven gruesome and bizarre undead horror comics from the sixties.
Included in the collection is Chic Stone's The Slimy Mummy, described by Stephen Sennitt in his book Ghastly Terrors: The horrible story of the Horror Comics as, "the almost psychotically unbelievable story of a group of bearded ancients who are cursed to live with the dead... [the artwork is ] Mind-numbing... Staggering... Sheer primitive genius."
Well worth the price for any and all fans of horror movies and comics!
