The paintings covered in this appealing book by Mariet Westermann were intended to not only please, but to serve as a kind of visual catalog of the period. Whether the subject was interior or exterior, the paintings provide an almost photographic record that bring to life the physical surroundings of the Dutch people of the 17th century. In doing so, they provide insight into their hearts and souls as well. And Westermann proves to be a capable guide through the era.
Book Description
Newly independent in 1585, the increasingly prosperous and politically powerful Dutch Republic experienced a tremendous rise in the production of artwork that was unparalleled in quantity, variety, and beauty. Now back in print, this classic book (originally published in 1996) examines the country’s rich artistic culture in the seventeenth century, providing a full account of Dutch artists and patrons; artistic themes and techniques; and the political and social world in which artists worked.
Distinguished art historian Mariët Westermann examines the “worldly art” of this time in the context of the unique society that produced it, analyzing artists’ choices and demonstrating how their pictures tell particular stories about the Dutch Republic, its people, and its past. More than 100 color illustrations complement this engaging discussion of an extraordinary moment in the history of art.

A Wordly Art: The Dutch Republic, 1585 - 1718.......2007-09-15
I purchased this text for a class recently. This little book is quite dense with information. So much so that I've reread and reread. It's very affordable and highly informative on Dutch Baroque Art.
Keep this one always.......2007-04-03
This book is beautifully printed and full of not only splendid pictures, but much useful information. This is the kind of book to put on your shelf for reference over and over. And, on a gloomy day, it will be a delight to get out and look through again.
Student Account on Dutch Art Book. .......2007-03-02
This book is very well written and easy to understand. A good introductory style and works great to explain basic concepts of this specific time period and region. It's a-okay by me.
Brilliant Book in a Brilliant Series.......2001-07-18
The Dutch Golden Age wasn't high on my list of favorites -- until this book came along.
This, in common with other volumes in the "Perspectives" series, offers high quality (though small) reproductions of important works, up-to-date analysis and discussion of the art and the contexts in which it was created.
It does all this while also offering two things that are rare in art books -- clear, well-written prose accessible to a lay audience, and a reasonable price. An excellent introduction to the subject, and a wonderful addition to any library.
Enjoyable and Informative.......1999-12-11
This book has many strengths: a large number of color photographs, the latest scholarship, and a variety of interpretative considerations. Westermann organizes the book thematically instead of by genre, which allows the reader to grasp the wholeness of Dutch art. Weaknesses: landscape and the contributions of Rembrandt are not given their due. Overall, a fine work that is appropriate both for the layman and the scholar.

A Great How-To Guide for Product Photography.......2000-05-03
This is an excellent book for those who need to take pictures of artwork, crafts or other products and need some help to achieve great results. I am a woodworker and I have read a number of things on the subject - articles, sections in other books, general photography books, etc - but mostly these deal with the very basics to get you started, but leave you with no idea where to go next. John White gives excellent coverage of the basics, but then gives lots of options, ideas and tips for taking your photos to a professional standard. He includes a range of equipment options for all techniques, usually working from the build-it-yourself option up to the top-of-the-line choice with pros and cons of each. He assesses the merits of buying new and used equipment with precise recommendations. He also discusses selecting film, labs to develop your work and even a pro photographer if you decide you still need to hire one. Although the book is aimed at photographing fine art, the principles are easily applied to any product photography. This is an excellent reference that will remain useful for years.
Book Description
No less versatile in his writing than in his installations, films, architecture, and sculpture, Liam Gillick unites his critical essays in this collection, most of which were originally printed in art magazines or exhibition catalogues. Lauded for his ingenious reinterpretation of Conceptual and Minimalist art, Liam Gillick has often used language, whether in type on a wall or on a page, as a site of artistic, theoretical, and political intervention. He reveals himself here as a witness of and major actor in the largely European 1990s art scene that included Philippe Parreno, Pierre Huyghe, Carsten H ller, Angela Bulloch, Douglas Gordon, and Rirkrit Tiravanija. A key publication of discussions, references, and artistic engagements of the 1990s, the book also allows an examination of the renewed importance at this time of Felix Gonzalez-Torres, John Baldessari, and Allen Ruppersberg.

Bridging Time & Space describes layered art........1999-04-18
In separate, but harmonious, voices, eleven writers describe layered art as an expression of a holistic perspective. Each chapter addresses a theme, illustrated in color with artworks related to: alchemy, the spirit, earth metaphors, cosmic forces, healing, archaic traces and the millennium. Layered art reflects the forward edge of syncretic thinking, the recognition that the universe is held within a matrix of shared consciousness. Everything is connected with everything else.

Feelings Are Facts: A Life (Writing Art)
ASIN: 0262194597 |
Book Description
Carolee Schneemann is one of the pioneers of performance, installation, and video art. Although other visual artists, such as Salvador Dali and Yves Klein, had used live self-portraiture and performance as a vehicle for public provocation, Schneemann was among the first to use her body to animate the relationship between the world of lived experience and the imagination, as well as issues of the erotic, the sacred, and the taboo. In the 1960s, her work prefigured the feminist movement's sexual self-assertion for women, and by the mid-1970s, her work anticipated the field of women's studies and its critique of patriarchal institutions. In the 1980s, she was one of the first to experiment with virtual environments.
Imaging Her Erotics integrates images from Schneemann's works in painting, collage, drawing, and video sculptures with written material drawn from the artist's journals, dream diaries, essays, and lectures. Encompassing four decades of her work, it demonstrates her profound influence on artists in all media. An opening essay by Kristine Stiles presents Schneemann's major themes and places her work in a historical context. Among other topics, the book covers Schneemann's response to the widespread use by artists of the ideas of theoreticians such as Georges Bataille, Jacques Derrida, and Jacques Lacan; her relationship to male artists such as Joseph Cornell, Robert Morris, and Claes Oldenburg; and reminiscences about her friends Ana Mendieta, Charlotte Moorman, and Hannah Wilke. The book also contains essays by Jay Murphy and David Levi-Strauss and interviews with the artist by Kate Haug, Linda Montano, and Aviva Rahmani.
Customer Reviews:
Feminism is fully alive and vibrant in Carolee Schneemann.......2002-01-17
This is a wonderful career survey of this brave artist. Her experience as a feminist artist painter sculptor film maker performer dancer thinker is very inspirational. Carolees relationship to her sexual body and the power of transformation throught the body is so very human healing strong and deeply intelligent. The power of feminist art to change art history and change the world is seen through her performances and paintings. For me the work in this book demands that I remember the struggle women artits had and still have- its only been 30 - 40 years of feminist body art! Let us never forget the struggles of these great artists who are women....This is a wonderful book!

Customer Reviews:
Good Book a little outdated but still relavant.......2006-12-13
I was in a class taught by Ritchin, and we discussed this book in class. His ideas of how digital alteration would change the world were for the most part, spot on.Additionally his newer ideas on the subject were excellent. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the subject.
A fascinating survey of photographers and photography........2000-03-03
Fred Ritchin's In Our Own Image gathers Aperture writers and photographers who survey the past and future worlds of photography. This examines the history and results of photojournalism and the influence of computers and image editing on photographic achievement, providing black and white examples throughout.
outdated and lacking.......1998-09-18
An attempt at trying to warn publishers and the public about the uncertainty of digital manipulation as related to photojouranlism, but no one raised an eyebrow towards Ritchin's shouts of the new negativeless world.
Book Description
This triple issue of 'Space and Culture' covers a vast range of concepts. Issue 7, 'Assemblages' highlights overlapping regions, extra-ordinary practices and the simultaneity of potentialities with event(s). The articles in issue 8, 'Love and Mourning,' engage questions of loss, trauma and their contingent theoretical and ethical implications. Issue 9, 'Dialogues' explores the fragments and intersections mobilized by and through globalization, ultimately challenging modernist polemics of binarization and identity.

Customer Reviews:
Helped Me Make Some Decisions.......2005-07-18
I got this book because I am finally taking the plunge into digital photography. I wanted two books. One book would look at all the digital cameras that are avaiable and tell me which one to buy. I found this information in Consumers Report.
But beyond that, I had a bunch of questions as to what the various features and specifications really mean, and what are the differences in taking digital vs. film pictures. From my experience with film photography I knew that I wanted a single lens camers. I didn't want to carry around a bunch of lenses. And the single lens needed to be a zoom with the ability to focus up close for macro work.
This book answered the questions I had, and many more that I didn't even know I had. It covers the digital zoom cameras on a conceptual basis, it does not pick out a particular brand. But it talks about zoom lenses. It talks about macro lens adapters (I need to try out the particular camera I ordered before making decisions about what, if anything, I need in this area). More important it talked about the differences in film and digital in areas like color sensitivity, and the digital equivalents of the ISO film speeds. Like I said, it talks about things that I never thought to ask.
The few bucks that this book costs will be well paid back in either choosing the right camera or in getting better pictures.
