Fabulous results.......2002-01-17
I did Laurens windmill as a first time quilter and had fabulous results. I bought the kit and couldn't believe that it would turn out as well as it did. I will be ordering another kit soon and will let you know how that turned out as well. It took all of 4 hours to have the top completed. I really am impressed with the ease of the instructions and hte helpful charts.
Happy stitching!
I love the technique and final designs.......1999-05-29
I keep looking at this book and have a hard time deciding which quilt to make. I currently made Taylor's board and it came out beautiful. I also have the rail fence started. Directions are easy to follow and very well done. The descriptions of the color values helped me. I am very interested in Deanna's second book, but I need more time with her first on before I move on.
Book Description
Water-soluble colored pencils are portable, versatile and much more forgiving than traditional watercolors, yet many artists have only just begun to tap into this medium's creative potential. This book explores the amazing possibilities of watercolor pencils, providing artists with basic instruction for taking full advantage of them in their artwork. Beginning with an overview of necessary materials and basic techniques, artists will learn from simple mini demos how to mix colors, create washes, layer colors and more. Artists will then see how these painting techniques are employed to capture a variety of popular subjects, including landscapes, flowers, animals, water, people, skies, trees, bridges and buildings. The last chapter of the book demonstrates how to mix watercolor pencils with other mediums to create all kinds of new and interesting effects.
Customer Reviews:
Easy techniques and great step-by-step illustrations.......2007-01-18
I am one of those people who are able to benefit from How To kinds of books. This particular book gives easy broken down steps to watercolor pencil techniques with plenty of room to explore and play with the medium in question. There is also a great balance of text and illustrations.
In my opinion the best part is the listing of different products and how they interact with each other and on different kinds of watercolor papers (it also discusses basic color theory and how to use it). It lists brand names so that you can purchase those products and experiment with them yourself. Most importantly is that it's presented in a fun and casual manner, so it takes away a lot of the fear if you're new at working with watercolor pencils.
Beautiful Book and Practical Instruction.......2006-11-05
What a motivating guide! This has easy-to-understand directives and doesn't seem overwhelming. At the same time, the examples are so wonderful and varied the "student" cannot help but want to practice more and more, allowing it to become an urge to take a pretty scene and turn it into something that can be shared.
I purchased this for my teen daughter (and to enjoy learning along with her) as a rich addition our homeschool curriculum. We enjoy sitting out on the deck and finding inspiration in our many trees, garden, the birds and squirrels, our beagles, etc.
The author is very gifted and conveys her love of nature and capturing a fleeting moment very well. She is also instrumental in showing how to cultivate a reader's individual artistic tendencies, even if they may feel they don't have any. This is preseted in a non-intimidating manner.
Highly recommended!
It's nice, informative but..........2004-06-01
I liked the book, but I wish it had more information or more examples, either by the author or by other artists in the medium. In order for me to really learn about the medium, I have had to buy not only this book but others about the same subject as well... It is not a problem with this book in particular, but a problem with ALL colored pencil books. All of them show a "part" of the what the medium has to offer. I wish there was a "compendium" of several authors about the subject, so we, aspiring artists, would have some sort of "big book" or "bible" about this.
A Must for Anyone Working in the Medium!.......2002-11-22
When I first recieved a box of watercolor pencils as a gift, I had no idea what to make of them... I do passing fair work with colored pencils, but watercolors have always been beyond me. I muddled along, experimenting and tossing the miserable results, until I found this book. Oh, the joy! Finally, information on how to get the most out of my creations! How to balance the use of dry and wet, how to work the pencils to their best use, how to work in multimedia (which I do). This is most certainly a bible of sorts for the watercolor pencil artist!

Outstanding!.......2006-04-12
I just got back from one of Jerry's workshops and am amazed at how much I feel that I learned. I bought this book at the workshop and it is excellent. It follows Jerry's method of step by step instructions with a photo of what the canvas should look like at each stage.
Jerry's workshop followed the same procedure except we could ask questions and get Jerry to help us over rough spots.
I've bought lot's of art books trying to find something that will help me. Jerry's books fill the bill perfectly! You can't go wrong with them.

Painting Magic by Jerry Yarnell.......2003-02-19
Excellent book! Very detailed step by step instructions for each painting right down to colors to mix and brushes to use. Highly recommended.
Instruction, Inspiriation and Fun.......2002-02-02
This book is a welcome addition to the vast repository of teaching materials by Jerry Yarnell. The paintings are more intricate and challenging than in the previous two books. There are moody seas and skies, dramatic cliffs, serene settings, quaint buildings, and birds, elk and a variety of wildlife in the compositions. The step by step instructions are comprehensive, with excellent and detailed color photos of each step. Mr. Yarnell does a terrific job of reiterating and expanding on the fine art techniques that form the basis of all of his teaching material. If you are looking for an instructional painting book that is beyond the beginners level, then you should find this book inspirational, challenging and fun.

Inspirational!.......2001-04-12
As an established commercial airbrush artist, just beginning to dabble in watercolor fine art I found "Splash 6" very inspiring. It has opened my eyes to the amazing potential of watercolors and I highly recommend this book to fellow artists and lovers of fine art.
Changed my mind..........2001-02-07
My first impression of this newest Splash was "Wow!" I was impressed by the sheer gamut of paintings from super-realistic to abstract. I found the abstract selections particularly appealing and useful.
But at second glance, I was not convinced this would help my painting enough to justify keeping the book. I think I got more out of Jeanne Carbonetti's books (Tao, Zen, Yoga of ...series) and of Watercolor Bold and Free.
So, if you want a good selection of examples of art focusing on the use of texture, this is a good selection. If you have a wide library of watercolor books already, this may not be anything really that new.
Splash 6.......2000-08-28
I was given this book just two weeks ago, but have already been through it several times. As its title suggests, it does indeed focus on depicting texture in watercolors, but I kept forgetting that as I turned each page and was stunned by the incredible artwork. I liked this book the most because of the diversity of paintings included. It has examples of serious, whimsical, traditional, avant-garde, representational, abstract... You name it! It helped open up my mind as to what watercolor could be.
The only negative thing I have to say is that I feel a little intimdiated about picking up my brush again. I was telling my watercolor teacher that I know I can never be as good as these artists. She said, "Yeah, when I saw this book, I thought, 'Why bother?'" But she is picking up her brush again as I am, and we have a wealth of new ideas and techniques to try out.
My nine-year-old niece was even impressed with this book!
A splendid addition to any watercolorist artbook collection........2000-07-03
A recommended picks for discriminating library collections, Rachel Rubin Wolf's Splash 6: Magic Of Texture features almost a hundred modern watercolorists who demonstrate how to enliven a painting with texture. From matching pigments and using light to providing effective contrasts, the works of each artist are presented in full color and serve to emphasize and enhance written advice.
Not this one!.......2000-04-20
I didn't find this book up to the previous standards set in this series. I returned it!

Book Description
Travel to the pueblos of Arizona and New Mexico and meet 102 families that make beautiful, traditional pottery. Meet the potters face to face in beautiful color photographs of them with their work, and enjoy interviews with the artists, branches of 43 family trees. Seventeen pueblos along the Rio Grande and in the rising mesas and bluffs to river's west, have a long tradition of making pottery vessels for practical and ceremonial use. This book introduces 554 modern potters in relation to the family members with whom they learned their craft. New forms and designs are displayed to demonstrate the evolving nature of their art.

Pueblo Pottery Families.......2007-05-13
The book provided insight into the relationships of the potters on the different pueblos. We like the book. It is inexpensive. We will have it available when we visit the different pueblos.
A Disappointment.......2003-02-03
Unfortunately, this book promises a lot more than it delivers. For example, in its preface, it mentions several families of potters at Acoma named Lewis not related to Lucy Lewis, but they are not even mentioned. Even the section on the family of Lucy Lewis is barely 2 pages. The author for the most part barely skims the surface. I desperately wanted to like this book, but the more I read it, the more I saw was lacking. For one thing, it seriously needed a much better editor. It reads like a grade school student's social studies report, and it is filled with typos, the worst being that many of the photo captions are wrong because the photos were flipped and the captions were not corrected. A major disappointment for the price. Fortunately I bought it in paperback! It did have some good information, but it could have and should have had much more.
An EXCELLENT resource for those interested in pottery........1999-01-04
This book is an excellent resource if you are interested in collecting pottery from all peublos as well as a variety of families. Although not quite as in depth as Rick Dillingmham's Fourteen Families, she does mention many families that he does not.

Book Description
For the past 800 years, the Indians of Taos Pueblo have lived under Taos Mountain in the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico. Their unique vision of the world, their deeply rooted attachment to the land and their own way of life, and the quiet wisdom of their elders are eloquently recorded in this classic volume.

The very best poetry collection about Native Americans I've seen........2007-05-21
Believe it or not I found this book in a throw-away bin at a Used Bookstore. The artwork on the cover caught my interest, then I opened the book and I realized Serendipity was smiling on me. The book was a favorable discovery, in other words. Not only is the poetry very appropriate and full of wisdom of the Elders, etc., but the images by Howell are some of the best pieces of art I've seen depicting the culture and heritage of the Native Americans. This is one of my favorite books of all time.

Customer Reviews:
Tammy Garcia, Santa Clara Pueblo potter & artist extraordinaire.......2007-09-01
Two weeks ago I knew virtually nothing about Pueblo pottery. After a whirlwind tour of Santa Fe & its museums, notably the Indian Cultural Arts Museum, in which I paid special attention to the exhibits on ceramics: (1) Maria Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo, who revived the art of Pueblo pottery in the early 20th century virtually single-handedly; (2) styles of the different Pueblos, including San Ildefonso, Santa Clara, Acoma, Laguna, Hopi, etc.--I kept coming back to the Santa Clara section, and was especially attracted to one particular piece to the extent that I had to take out my note pad and make a note of that artist's name, Tammy Garcia; I was going to remember her and look for more works by her for sure (silly me, to think I had "discovered" her); (3) Casas Grandes, an ancient culture that was "new" to me and my husband centered south of the Mexico-New Mexico border--actually would have been contemporary with the "ancestral Pueblo" (or "Anasazi") culture of the New Mexico/Colorado area.
We were to learn that there was currently a sculpture exhibit in the garden area outside the museum featuring Tammy Garcia's recent large-scale works in bronze, which are amazing, and I also found this book in the museum gift shop and decided to purchase it later on-line (so I wouldn't have to carry it home).
Meanwhile, the next day in the Wheelwright museum, some people were purchasing Santa Clara pottery in the gift shop, and I learned more there, including which gallery featured Tammy Garcia's work in Santa Fe (Blue Rain) and how famous she is, and how nice a person and how sweet her two little daughters are as well. I did get to go to the gallery, and enjoyed every piece of Tammy Garcia's art I had the joy to see in person, though I cannot afford to purchase any of it myself. Not sure why, but the lady in the gallery gave me a copy of this book, either because I so obviously really, really, truly loved Tammy's work, as opposed to being just interested in whether I thought it would appreciate in value or impress my friends, or whether she didn't believe I really didn't have the money and thought I was going to return to buy a lot of art or was representing somebody; I prefer to think the former, but would be amused to think the latter.
In any case, I am thrilled to have the book, because it is what I can afford to have of Tammy Garcia's work, and her pottery is beautiful; if you get a chance to see it in person, please do; it's wonderful. Most of the book is pottery, which is how she started out, and the photographs are gorgeous; in recent years, she is "experimenting" with other media, such as glass and bronze, partly by collaborating with other artists, which you will also learn about in the last part of the book. Not that I am an expert or anything, but I would say she is beyond experimenting; her glass sculptures are very nice, and the bronzes are spectacular; I would be very proud to have any of her works in my home, although it would outclass everything else I own, pretty much. I am glad I also got to pick up the gallery's exhibition catalog which has more of Tammy Garcia's bronzes in it; and when I was in Taos, I also visited the Blue Rain Gallery there and saw a few more of her works just to be really complete.
All the Pueblos have their own individual styles, and Santa Clara and San Ildefonso's are particularly lovely, with their red-on-red and black-on-black highly polished pots--reading the description of how this is accomplished in another museum exhibit on Maria Martinez, it's a very labor intensive process, that is actually apparently done by hand polishing for many, many hours, as opposed to applying some kind of glaze to make the pots shiny. San Ildefonso's pottery is characterized more by stylized, etched surface designs, largely contributed by Maria's husband Julian, such as feathers (as seen in the Mimbres culture, to the south of the Puebloans) and water serpents.
Santa Clara pottery is additionally unique because of its carved, relief designs, giving the surface a 3-D aspect. Tammy Garcia's carvings are particularly bold, deep, and sharply defined, as if she is not at all afraid of cutting right through the soft clay; it is amazing to think of her handling the unbaked pots while stacking them for the firing process--how thin and fragile the carved-out areas must be, how easy to tear, and how hard to make perfectly sharp edges on the soft clay. Well, that is why her piece stood out in the first exhibit I saw and why she commands top prices and is sold in an exclusive gallery, because of her genius.
There is a quote from her in the book saying she is criticized as being "non-traditional," whatever that means. I am still not an expert, so you may take whatever I say with as many grains of salt as you wish, but the Santa Clara Pueblo still claims her (though she was born in Los Angeles), and her pottery appears to be in the Santa Clara style, and the museum displays one of her pieces in the Santa Clara section. Her pottery technique and colors and style are of Santa Clara type, though I don't know enough about the particular designs to know if they are traditional. Obviously, when she began to experiment with other media such as glass and bronze, that is non-traditional, and nobody, least of all herself claims it to be traditional, although she uses Indian designs and motifs in her artwork--but it's clearly a modern art form.
I did get to the Santa Clara Pueblo, unfortunately apparently during siesta time, but found one shop open on the highway, and bought a small pot there (not of course one of Tammy's), but it's very lovely. I hope to return to New Mexico and the Pueblos and to see more of the pottery soon. In the meantime, I can enjoy my memories, my Santa Clara pot, and this book.
Breathtaking.......2003-11-10
If you are an artist or appreciate art, you need this book in your home. The biographical information is intriguing, and in-depthly honest. The pottery itself is breathtaking. It's hard to describe the shapes, the stories, the colors....you just need to read it to believe it!

Highly recommended for readers of all ages.......2006-11-05
In "Taos Pueblo Painted Stories", Native American artist and Taos Pueblo resident Jonathan Warm Day draws from his childhood memories of Pueblo life in a visual presentation that follows the Taos Pueblo community through the fours seasons. The result is an impressive combination of imagery and story blended together to describe a culture of traditions and customs. "Taos Pueblo Painted Stories" is highly recommended for readers of all ages and would make a welcome, timeless, and enduringly popular addition to family, school and community library Native American collections
A Visual Visit to Taos Pueblo.......2006-03-13
Anyone who ever has been to Taos Pueblo will feel a wave of nostalgia upon seeing Jonathan Warm Day's paintings - and those who haven't been there will want to go. Accompanied by an evocative text written by the artist, each painting depicts an aspect of pueblo life, following the calendar through the four seasons. Rich in color and texture, Jonathan's paintings draw the viewer into the scene. One can almost hear the stream as it ripples through the pueblo, smell the burning pinon, taste the hot bread fresh from a traditional kiva oven. This is the work of an artist deeply connected with his subject, and his affection for Taos Pueblo is apparent in every brush stroke, every word.

Book Description
Pop Chalee was one of the first Native American women artists to achieve national fame, recognition and commercial success. Her popularity sprang from the strength and charm of her personality as well as her unique artistic style.
Customer Reviews:
AN OUTSTANDING NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIST.......2000-09-23
One hallmark of Native American art, a reverence for the earth, is gloriously celebrated in the work of Taos Pueblo artist Pop Chalee, now displayed in a beautiful volume, The World Of Flower Blue.
While it is regrettably true that a score of Native American women artists receive scant attention, Pop Chalee was one of the first to gain national recognition and commercial success. The daughter of a Native American father and Swiss mother, Pop Chalee, who adopted her Tiwa name, Flower Blue, utilized her rich multi cultural heritage to create an enchanted world rooted in ceremonial and daily activities.
It's said that Jackson Pollack, one of the great Abstract Expressionists, may have been influenced by Native American sand paintings, others try to categorize Native American art as expressionism or postmodernism. Chalee's work defies such narrow perimeters, as is seen in her exultant renderings of dancing figures and nature.
A graduate of the noted 1937 class of the Dorothy Dunn Studio at the Santa Fe Indian School, Chalee was trained in what is known as "Traditional Indian Painting," representations of native scenes painted in flat colors with clear outlines. Among the school's goals "was to encourage the study of tribal cultural traditions while allowing for individualism." Chalee was more than an individual, expanding her oeuvre beyond paintings to jewelry, textile designs, and murals.
Chosen by the artist to be her biographer, poet Margaret Cesa has delivered a sympathetic yet candid portrayal, a journey into the world of Native American artists that few visit. In doing so, she, too, helps to smooth the path for those who follow Pop Chalee.
A debt of gratitude is owed to "Flower Blue," who broke down barriers and left the world a rare heritage of magical beauty.
Award Winning Artistic Biography of Native American Painter.......1999-01-14
Pop Chalee was a Native American artist trained at the Santa Fe School of Indian Art during the seminal 1930s. Her style was traditional, and consequently her work has been ignored in recent years. This book should restore her reputation. Superb color plates. Winner, Border Regional Library Association's 1998 Southwest Book Award.

An Extraordinary Manga that tells of an alternate Japan........1998-06-15
Mamoru Oshii's "Kerberos - Panzer Cops" tells the story of a Japan that has just been completely defeated in war a decade ago. Although they are on the road back to mass industrializtion and prosperity, strong handed economic and political policies have turned many areas into dilapidated slums. Anarchists and anti-government student protesters have taken up arms, stirring up violent social revolution riots. In order to combat this growing threat, the Japanese government has nationalized a division of the police, creating the National Bureau of Public Safety. Armed with Nazi stormtrooper-like (but twice as vicious looking) Protect Gear and heavy firearms, these specialized divisions are justice and order incarnate to the government, and armed thugs to the citizens. This is a VERY smart and well done Graphic Novel. Don't let the Science Fiction-ish Protect Gear fool you, this book's story and character interactions are on par with, if not surpass any contemporary American political thriller.
An animated feature which takes place in the same story line is slated for release in Japan this fall and for general release worldwide early next year.
Sidenote: Mamoru Oshii directed the critically acclaimed "Ghost in the Shell".
