Book Description

This groundbreaking rhetoric/reader is known for its practical, workshop approach. Addressing students as writers, A COMMUNITY OF WRITERS features numerous writing activities and assignments that challenge students to develop their skills by writing often, by exploring their writing processes, and by sharing their writing with others. The third edition features a new design and incorporates expanded treatment of argumentation and research, in-depth coverage of the Internet (including a mini-workshop on composing a web page) and computer-based writing, coverage of visual literacy, more material on drafting, and a variety of new student and professional essays.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good freshman composition text.......2005-10-23

I have used a variety of textbooks to teach English composition over the past 19 years, but this one is my favorite.

Elbow & Belanoff offer a variety of pre-writing strategies, drafting tips, single and group assignments, and peer-editing activities. The book is very readable; the writers put the practical suggestions in the body of the chapter, and the detailed theory of WHY the suggestions work is in special sections at the end. Those students who want to know why certain strategies work can get the answers without bogging down the rest of the class. Each assignment comes with process journal questions, which force the students to analyze their own writing and which lead smoothly into the writing autobiography assignment at the end. Due to the author's excellent explanations and samples of various peer-review methods, I have fewer problems with and student complaints about peer-review with this text than with any other I have tried.

When I use this text, more of my students take control of their own writing processes. They begin to understand the reasons behind the failure or success of a given paper. This text is very empowering to student writers.

Much of the analysis done in peer-review and in process journals promotes development of higher-level critical thinking skills, and I can see those skills reflected in my students' writing by the end of the semester.

Disclaimer: If you don't agree with Peter Elbow's other work about writing, you probably won't like this book, either.

Book Description

By the 1990s, public art had evolved far beyond the lonely monument on an open plaza. Now public artists might design the entire plaza, create an event to alter the social dynamics of an urban environment, or help to reconstruct a neighborhood. Dialogues in Public Art presents a rich blend of interviews with the people who create and experience public art -- from an artist who mounted three bronze sculptures in the South Bronx to the bureaucrat who led the fight to have them removed; from an artist who describes his work as a "cancer" on architecture to a pair of architects who might agree with him; from an artist who formed a coalition to convert twenty-two derelict row houses into an art center/community revitalization project to a young woman who got her life back on track while living in one of the converted houses.

The twenty interviews are divided into four parts: Controversies in Public Art, Experiments in Public Art as Architecture and Urban Planning, Dialogues on Dialogue-Based Public Art Projects, and Public Art for Public Health. Tom Finkelpearl's introductory essay provides a concise overview of changing attitudes toward the city as the site of public art.

This book includes interviews with Vito Acconci, John Ahearn, David Avalos, Denise Scott Brown, Rufus L. Chaney, Mel Chin, Douglas Crimp, Paulo Freire, Andrew Ginzel, Linnea Glatt, Louis Hock, Ron Jensen, Kristin Jones, Maya Lin, Rick Lowe, Jackie McLean, Frank Moore, Jagoda Przybylak, Assata Shakur, Michael Singer, Elizabeth Sisco, Arthur Symes, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Robert Venturi, and Krzysztof Wodiczko

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2000-06-10

Although Finkelpearl is simply wrong about the web and his setting up of an antithetical relationship between the city and its suburbs is, well, dated... his book is really one of the best collection of contemporary public art interviews and ideas out there. Finkelpearl's hands-on involvement with NYC public art programs gives him a level-headed, understated, and pragmatic interview style which avoids too much theoretical diddling and agenda-pumping. Smart, clear, well organized... anybody interested in contemporary public art should own this book.

    Book Description

This is an edition of Tacitus' work on oratory, with a substantial introduction and commentary. It is the first commentary in English in over 100 years and the only one at this level. It is designed to elucidate problems of language and reference in the text and to put the reader in the picture as regards late first-century AD society and literature, particularly oratory, still the most important activity within the Roman élite.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for Drama I classes.......2006-09-28

I was really skeptical about this series, as so many others like it have been filled with lame scenes and weak writing; however, I was surprised. Most of the scenes are quite well crafted, although the endings tend to be a bit abrupt.I have used the scenes in competitive forensics and in the classroom with beginning theatre students. the writers give the students enough depth of characterization to provide challenge to the beginning actor and enough room for the experienced actor to add nuances and take the scene to a higher plane.

3 out of 5 stars BE ADVISED! Coaches from Single-Sex Schools Need Not Order!.......2004-02-10

These two volumes are, indeed, highly useful for forensic coaches...well, for those in co-ed settings, anyway. I was quite surprised to find, when I received these books, that each and every scene was created for the male/female duo pair. The vast majority do not lend themselves to play by single sex pairs. (I had expected a more balanced approach with, perhaps, half designed for the male/female duo and the other half split between scenes for the female/female and male/male duo as is so often the case with scene books.) I actually felt strongly enough about this point to write to the authors--as I hope they will take the needs of those of us in single-sex schools into account and provide us with material too! A LATER ADDITION TO THIS REVIEW: I actually hear from one of the authors--and quite promptly, I might add--who agreed that this was a strong need and indicated that these works are close to completion! So, watch for them!

      Book Description

Dialogue has a long lineage but a relatively recent research tradition. This volume's goal is to elevate dialogue onto the research agenda by addressing such questions as: How can we make dialogue actionable and effective in organizational practice? How can dialogue inform decision making in a particular problem domain or community of interest when multiple people, groups, and organizations are involved? How can dialogue be utilized to build more vibrant, democratic communities? To what extent can the Internet and new information technology support the dialogical process? How can we describe the relational field that dialogue creates and build a theory of social communication and information processing that explains the organization and dynamics of dialogue, and its implications for psychosocial function?

This volume addresses these questions in four sections: dialogue's foundations, perspectives, practice and theory. By design, the contrib

          Book Description

Few people have a true understanding of what it takes to get a feature film made and released. How does a film get from idea to finished product? How do film directors interact with other creative personnel such as actors, set designers, cinematographers, and editors? What is it like to work in the film industry in the twenty-first century? What is the relationship of the so-called "independent" filmmaker to the major Hollywood studios? Mario Falsetto's searching work provide answers to these questions through a collection of original career interviews with nine exciting film directors. The prestigious cast of directors interviewed in the course of this volume include: Anthony Minghella (The English Patient, Cold Mountain); Gus Van Sant (My Own Private Idaho, Good Will Hunting); Neil Labute (In the Company of Men, Nurse Betty); Julie Taymor ( Titus, Frida); John Dahl (The Last Seduction, Rounders); Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition); Alexander Payne ( About Schmidt, Sideways); Michael Polish (Northfork, Twin Falls Idaho) and Nancy Savoca (Dogfight, If These Walls Could Talk). The interviews reveal what factors led to their decision to make films, and focus on the creative output of each in in-depth and career-comprehensive dialogues. Each interview is preceded by a brief account of the director's background, and ends with a discussion of the current state of filmmaking. Along the way, the author gets at issues that are crucial to an understanding of the directors' work and creative processes. The book also includes a main introduction, individual introductions to each conversation, a conclusion, filmographies, and an index.

Public Speaking Today will teach your students the public speaking skills that are used by presidents, generals, business leaders, and celebrities. This text is organized into a step-by-step approach beginning with "What is Public Speaking," then moves through the speech building process. A special chapter dealing with debate is also included.

4 out of 5 stars Public Speaking Today, 3rd Edition.......2000-04-21

The reason why I like this text so much better than other speaking texts is that the assignments in it are practical. This pragmatic approach teaches students about all elements of speech preparation and delivery, from research to structure to what they will feel like when they're up there giving the speech. There are how-to sections on most types of competitive speeches, such as oratory, lincoln-douglas debate and extemporaneous speaking, which is great for teachers like me who also double as speech coaches for competitive teams. I've never found a useful speech text for high school students until I found this one.

                      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nomi Sunrider and Ulic Qel-Droma together........2003-06-24

This TPB comic seems to take place after TALES OF THE JEDI, THE COLLECTION so I am placed it in Timeline year 3998 before NH. Released in dec 1997 we get about the same quality art and coloring as TOTJTC (about a C) but dave dorman did the cover art, and he it great! The story also rates a 3. It has good action and is more tightly written than some of the other Old republic era comics. This one is a worthwhile read, but not as good as Darkhorse will start putting out in the future.

The binding on this comic is good and can handle some abuse. Some of the new TPB comic binding since production was moved to China is inferior. I have had a comic fall apart in my hands while reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Brief introduction to the events leading to the Sith War.......2002-12-21

"The Freedon Nadd Uprising" is another example of the good decision Lucas Books made in deferring to Dark Horse Comics to telling of the Tales of the Jedi series. This is brief graphic novel, about half the size of the traditional comic books. It serves as a means to introducing the characters and the events that will change the lives of the Jedi and the Republic some 4000 years before "A New Hope" (It should be noted that there is another "Tales of the Jedi" graphic novel series set 1000 years prior to this one). It introduces the reader to the characters of Ulic Qel-Droma, Cay Qel-Droma, Nomi Sunrider, Exar Kun, Alema, and numerous other names that became major players in "The Sith War". The story follows an uprising of the followers of a dead Sith Lord named Freedon Nadd on the planet of Onderon. The spirit of Freedon Nadd is still present and using the frail body of the evil former king of Onderon as temporary means to further his evil agenda. Most of the action in the novel deals with the Jedi putting down the uprising and rescuing Jedi Master Arca Jeth. However, the more important developments involve Nadd's identifying the idle rich cousins Satal Keto (sp?) and Alema as greater instruments to enforce his will. The uprising and the former King's role in it were merely distractions to mask Nadd's greater plans. This quick little graphic novel does a marvelous job at laying the groundwork for the treachery that is to come.

4 out of 5 stars Short, but well worth the trouble.......2000-06-09

Although the bulk of the story happens in the next two books in the Tales of the Jedi series, this is a good setup with enough action to keep you waiting to read Dark Lords of the Sith. Those of you who may be looking for the story of Exar Kun (freed thousands of years later by students of Luke Skywalker) can start reading here, also if you're looking for early tales of Light Side vs. Dark Side, this is a great starting place. But I wouldn't suggest reading this without its sequels.

4 out of 5 stars OFF TO A GREAT START!.......2000-01-13

This was a great beginning to the TALES OF THE JEDI saga. It properly followed the story outline provided by Tom Veitch in the end text of DARK EMPIRE number 5 (It's too bad that the future stories strayed from that superb plotline). Some of my favorite scenes involved Satal Keto and Aleema discovering the ancient Sith medallion and unknowingly succombing to the dark side of the force. This was a great set-up to a story that would later be ruined by Kevin J. Anderson's interference. The only reason that I did not give this a five star rating was because a certain character gets his arm sliced off and then hooks a fully functioning droid arm on as an instant on the spot replacement! UGHH! Other than that, you have a really cool story.

3 out of 5 stars The starting point for Tales of the Jedi.......1999-02-26

Although the Freedon Nadd Uprising is short, it is a starting point to begin your Tales of the Jedi readings. It excellently sets up the the events of the Sith War and the following graphic novels. It is action-packed and filled with the kind of drama and violence that only the Star Wars universe can provide.
