Excellent Resource for Learning Use of Light in Watercolor .......2006-03-30
Unfortunately this wonderful book is OP. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a workshop/demonstration by the author and what a talent and excellent teacher and this title is equally excellent. Well thought out and explained with useful demonstrations. Judy Morris shows you how to see light and shadow. I have purchased other books on the same topic and Judy's tomb tops them all.
It makes me en'light'en........2001-05-26
As a new watercolorist, I have a very serious problem about seeing light and shadow. No matter how my instructor tried to point them out. I hardly see and paint. After reading this book, my eyes are just opened and bring me to a new way of seeing light and shadow. I now understand what to look for and how to improve my rather 'flat' painting.
The explanation, samples, and instruction in this book are very useful, easy to follow, and practical. I would definitely, highly recommend this book to whom has problem of seeing or understanding nature of LIGHT.
Light in the Watercolor World.......2001-01-14
I read the book from start to end as soon as I got it in the mail and then again a couple of days later. It was so informative and has some excellent examples of what the author is describing verbally. The exercises are easy to follow and you learn so much from doing the exercises. I am enjoying the book very much and am looking for more from this author. Easy to read and understand but each time that I read it, I discovered more tidbits of knowledge. I probably would not recommend this book to advanced watercolorists but it was just PERFECT for my needs since I only just started the conversion from oil to watercolor.

Chinkok Tan has painted and taught for more than 40 years. In Watercolor Basics: Shape and Light Value, he shows the art student how to see and simplify one's subjects. Tan suggests that every subject "reveals itself in light values and shapes. When you finish this book, you should be able to paint anything without sketching." An introduction to supplies provides the tools needed to get started for under 80 dollars, and a primer on techniques describes painting sources and how to lay a flat wash. Tan begins his lessons by explaining light values (color) and how to mix them. He teaches the painter to abandon outlining one's subjects and to instead focus on painting correct shapes and silhouettes. He then presents a three-step process of painting shape, shade, and detail; how to use higher or lower values for varying effects; and how to build harmonious compositions. The book closes with complete step-by-step painting demonstrations. Tan's method is simple, straightforward, and easy to grasp, yet he achieves surprisingly sophisticated and refreshing painted effects, as in the waxy sheen of green and red apples poised in a luminous glass bowl. Tan asserts, "I can say with absolute certainty that painting is a skill anybody with interest can learn. It has nothing to do with talent or gift." This book of basic techniques is ideal for the beginning painter, but will also prove of benefit to more experienced artists who wish to revisit fundamental lessons of perception and "trusting the eye." --Mary Ribesky
Book Description
"Light values and shapes are the two essential elements of painting. These two values enable us to see and feel the space, form, structure, perspective and texture around us." Author and artist Chinkok Tan has developed an easy-to-teach and easy-to-learn method for painting watercolor that will allow anyone to achieve good results with a minimum of study time.
Tan combines his clear teaching on seeing color values in light with an equally clear and simple teaching on seeing shapes properly. His three-step painting process develops the form of an object by adding shade and detail, while still keeping the process simple for the beginner. This method eliminates the need for complicated courses in drawing, anatomy, perspective and color theory.
* Helps simplify the process of watercolor painting without simplifying the results
* Teaches how to paint directly and immediately using shapes and light values

Straightforward and clearly stated..........2001-12-22
Love the simplicity of its approach to delineating shape and light. A plus addition to my how to library.

Run Away! Run Away!.......2005-09-12
This book is basically unreadable. Impenetrable metaphysical terminology is used in dense, convoluted sentences to convey abstruse theories of meaning (at least I think that's what it is) in such a way as to be completely and utterly opaque. Half the time I didn't know what the guy was talking about, and I have a degree in this stuff and belong to Mensa. If you're interested in Turner, you'd do better to look elsewhere.
Some good reproductions though, and if you're just interested in the pictures, the price is right. Hence the two stars; the text would be zero, since it's useless.

Customer Reviews:
A Good Book--4 stars.......2007-04-27
Dragonwings is a good book to read because you have a good feeling to know someone's dream came true, like Moonshadow's father's dream. Moonshadow is a young man. When he was just eight years old, he had a chance to join his father who he had never seen before in the United States. He went through a difficult time passing immigration. This book talks about how Chinese people settled down in Chinatown and the experience in 1906 with the big earthquake in San Francisco, and then how Moonshadow and his father relocated to Oakland. Moonshadow's father is a good kite maker, and he has a fabulous dream to make a flying machine. Moon Shadow writes a letter to the Wrights telling them how his father likes to fly too, and wishes they can help him. The father's dream came true when he made a flying machine in 1909. Lawrence Yep's historical novels shows rich traditions and the culture of the Chinese community. I will recommend this book to people who are American born Chinese because they can learn from this book about how difficult it was for their ancesters to get into this country, and how they worked so hard and how they survived in white society, so they will appreciate them. Overall it is a good book to read, I just have some words that were hard to understand for me, maybe because they are too old fashioned.
Upset.......2007-04-18
I was honestly upset with this book not as good as i thought it would be, I mean the story was just boring overall. The only thing I thought was interesting that they used kites and I would be curious to ask the author why.
snooze fest.......2007-02-22
horrible
I am 13 years old and I hate this book
we read it in english class this year. About two people actually fell asleep reading it in 5th period. Really boring. There was one exciting part to the story. The names are hard to keep track of. I also don't like the fact that all throughout this book the boy refers to the white men as "demons". At first I thought the book was suposed to teach a lesson. But in the end it didn't
don't buy this book
Dragonwings.......2006-11-30
Wow,this is the best book I've ever read in years. This book starts off with a boy named Moonshadow,Moonshadows mom,and grandmother. They are in there farm allways workinging in the farm and not having any fun.
Moonshadow always wonders how the goldenmountains (America)looks like. When Moonshadow visits the goldenmountains and finds his dad there. The white demons (white people) are mean to the chinamen and all yhey care about is themselves.
Dragonwings.......2006-05-25
Moonshadow starts out as a shy little boy who lives in China who was curious about The Land of the Golden Mountain (America). Men from China would go to America in search for a better life. This is what Moonshadow's father did. One day Moonshadow was told that he had to choose between either staying in China and never knowing his father or being taken to his father in The Land of the Golden Mountain, he chose to leave. On the boat he was very frightened because he heard the older men telling stories of how they were almost tortured in America which did not make it any easier for Moonshadow to leave China. When he arrives he encounters a couple of "scary" things before they get to where he will be staying. Everyone with the last name of Lee works in a Laundry Shop, which is owned by Uncle Bright Star and White Deer. Moonshadow is greeted with Demon (white people) clothing. He already doesn't like what he sees. Moon shadow faces many difficulties such as being mugged, robbed, being picked on and racism through out the whole story. Towards the end of the story Moonshadow's father Windrider discovers that he wants to peruse his dream and he will need Moonshadow's help to achieve that dream. When he tells everyone that he will be moving out they are hurt and angry. They live by a white demoness and her niece, Miss. Whitlaw and Robin. While they are living there Windrider works as a handy man for Mr. Alger. Everything is perfect until the Earthquake comes. Miss. Whitlaw and Robin, Moonshadow and Windrider have to separate. It is up to Moonshadow to take over there new house because father is working on his dream but, will he finish in time and will it work? You find out!

Customer Reviews:
Great for your needs.......2003-11-21
Born in San Francisco and still live nearby. Have found this a useful book for friends and travelers looking for a compact map of the city and reliable info on places to go, where to stay or places to eat. Like the format with a map of the neighborhoods, which makes the book very convenient when walking or driving and trying to find where to go. Descriptions are short accurate and helpful. I like the size and the format for oraganizing information that is used, and the typeface in the book makes it very readable. I carry one in my car for times when visit the city.
Loved it.......2002-07-02
I have to say that this book is just cool. I just got back from my first visit to San Francisco, and I am so glad I had this guide with me. The fold out maps are very clear and helpful. Even though the book is small, it hits all the highlights. I visited several shops and restaurants listed in the back, and I was never disappointed.
Easiest Guidebook I've Ever Used!.......2002-05-22
I've lived in San Francisco for five years, but I still get lost when exploring a new neighborhood. The comprehensive pull-out maps found in Moon Metro are so detailed, that they even include those hard-to-find alleyways and cul-de-sacs. I had friends in from out of town last weekend, and I let them use my copy. They loved it! I definitely recommend this series.
Great book! Nothing comparable (from a Bay Area Native).......2002-05-22
I agree that what makes them cool is the foldout maps. The book is also pretty small. I've lived in the Bay Area all my life but still manage sometimes to get lost while hanging out in the city. I can put this in my coat pocket before I step out and not worry about looking clueless in front of my out-of-town friends. For people who are just visiting, I liked their selection of shops and places to eat. They didn't just list the usual tourist traps. And the color photos inside were pretty nifty, they could be postcards!
Better late than never.......2002-05-22
If only this book had been around when I moved to San Francisco two years ago! It's awesome. I got it as a gift and figured I knew my way around well enough that I would never use it, but I took it out one night and it's been in my purse ever since. I had out of town guests recently and they took it with them one day while I was at work. They came back raving about how easy it was to get around the city with the guide and how many great shops they found with it. Now every time I go out, I check the book first to pick a restaurant or bar.
Book Description
Bandleader Philip Damon still hasn't recovered from the death of his wife-victim of a still-unsolved murder-when he arrives at a charity ball at San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel. So, understandably, he's quite shaken to meet Lenore Ashley there, as she uncannily resembles his late wife. But the belle of the ball becomes a suspect when her companion is found dead with an ice pick in his heart. Now, Philip must solve two murders-and discover why he is the one link between them.
Customer Reviews:
A Good One !!.......2004-12-11
This was a good book-- I especially liked the references to famous people who appeared through out the story. The story moved right along, and the ending was satisfactory. Usually I don't read who-done-its-, but this one was very interesting.
Readable, But Only Just.......2004-04-06
Peter Duchin, of course, is the son of the celebrated bandleader Eddie Duchin, a noted musician in his own right, and the author of the well-received memoir GHOST OF A CHANCE. John Morgan Wilson is a journalist, screenwriter, and Edgar-winning author of the Benjamin Justice mystery-novel series. Together they have created Philip Damon, a bandleader who bears a notable resemblance to co-author Duchin and who finds himself at the center of mystery, murder, and mayhem in 1963 San Francisco: several years earlier Damon's beloved wife Diana was strangled to death in their New York apartment; now Damon has returned to the city where they first met, and as he and his band begin to play Diana's double walks into the room on the arm of one the city's rich and powerful, and murder is not far behind.
It sounds interesting, but it isn't. The plot reads rather like an extremely improbable mixture of Charlie Chan, The Thin Man, and Vertigo with a splash of circa-1963 political correctness thrown in for good measure--and it is rendered with such an excessive degree of period charm that it's a wonder the writers didn't expire from nostalgia overdose. They are also tiresomely celebrity conscious, working hard to introduce such famous names as Marilyn Monroe, Kim Novak, and Truman Capote on virtually every page and to a remarkably tiresome degree. Before the novel ends, we've had stolen pearls, mysterious trips to the Chinatown, drag queens, and enough references to various musicians of the era to sink a boat, much less a novel. Now, all of this might be forgiven--including what I thought was a rather obvious double-edged solution--were it not for the fact that the style is very stiff and the characters are extremely inconsistent, shifting from naughty to nice without seeming provocation.
One of the characters in the novel, Charlene, is fond of reading murder mysteries. Toward the end of the novel she notes that she is presently reading a new Dorothy Sayers mystery novel. Unfortunately, in 1963 Sayers hadn't published a mystery novel in more than twenty years; indeed, Sayers herself had been dead for six. This is hardly the first time the authors fiddle dates in the book, but hey, why let plausibility get in the way? And indeed, this is indicative of the novel as a whole. Final take: it is readable, but it isn't something you'll read again, it won't make you a fan of the Duchin-Wilson writing team, and there are many much better mystery novels out there--several of Dorothy Sayers' among them.
GFT, Amazon Reviewer
Highly unrealistic nostalgic fun.......2003-12-04
Ah yes, this is full of nostalgia, maybe almost but not quite to the point of irritation.
Philip Damon, bearing a strong resemblance to band leader/co-author Peter Duchin, plays amateur detective when a man accompanying a woman who is remarkably similar in appearance to Damon's murdered wife is himself murdered. Hobnobbing with practically every celebrity who was prominent in 1963, he investigates the murder much to the consternation of black San Francisco Police Inspector Hercules Platt who is having his own problem convincing his superiors and those he deals with that he is a very capable inspector.
This is a light-hearted portrayal of the early '60's alluding to the social changes going on at the time including racial issues, growing drug use, rock & roll replacing swing era music, and acceptance of gays, as well as providing us with an old-fashioned type of mystery featuring the amateur sleuth.
buy it. buy it now........2003-06-24
Great book. Well-written, humorous, well-plotted. I look forward to more books in what could be a well-done series. I'm a big fan of John Morgan Wilson's Justice series and while this is not as dark as those can be, it is well worth the read.
One of the best I've read.......2003-01-13
Blue Moon is one of those rare pieces I read in one sitting. The authors craft a story with good pace (the celluloid runs through your mind during the car chase to the Golden Gate Bridge) Having been interested in the Duchin story for years, the authors play with Peter Duchin's personal history and use it to wonderful effect. Just as Philip Damon prefers of his music, the book "swings".

An o k handbook, but a much better fire starter...........2001-11-24
I was given this book by a good friend of mine for my 67th birthday last October. A good friend, a man with good taste and a great sense and wonder for the outdoors. But I must be candid about this book. It simply sucks. Kim Keir is not only biased, but is a poor writer who lacks scope and detail in her descriptions of the great Northern Cal.
Encyclopedic, but biased.......1999-04-17
In general Moon travel guides are encyclopedic, and "Northern California Handbook" at nearly 800 pages of fine print is not an exception. Hotels and restaurants are subjectively described rather than rated, which I find preferable to the AAA approach. I purchased the guidebook for a visit to the "gold country", and unfortunately found it to be offensive. It refers to miners as "barbarians"and "lustful legions", refers to use of pig latin by miners as "hog" latin, refers to the 1849 gold rush as "the peak years of greed", hard rock mining is refered to as a "corporate raid", hard rock miners are described as being "like monstrous moles burrowing ... to bleed ancient veins", describes the very pleasant and beautiful Malakoff Diggins State Park as "horrifying" and "ghoulish", calls mining "land rape". The author gleefully describes bigotry toward Chinese miners, but is apparently oblivious of her own prejudice toward non-Asian miners--many of whom were Latin Americans (including Mexicans among others), free Black Americans, and Cherokee Indians from Georgia. It is not at all clear that Chinese miners were less "greedy" nor otherwise morally superior to non-Asian miners. Indeed far more Chinese miners were injured and killed in tong wars among themselves than by non-Asians. I am part Native American myself, and I personally have a deep seated pro-Asian prejudice as a result of a very kindly Chinese neighbor when I was a small child, but I manage to avoid expressing such prejudice in print, and certainly do not express it by denigrating non-Asians and non-Native Americans

Excellent example of a building rennovation for new use........2006-12-26
The architecture of this building (formerly the SF Public Library) and the art inside are fascinating. The interior is a mash-up of old and new styles, which echoes the museum collection of ancient and modern Asian art. This book is a must-have for architecture and art enthusiasts.

San Francisco has long attracted those looking for new beginnings at the end of the line. In San Francisco Handbook, California travel expert Kim Weir plumbs the depths of this elegant, eccentric city in exquisite prose worthy of the destination. From the Barbary Coast to Haight-Ashbury and the Castro, from the Mission District to the Sunset, San Francisco Handbook weaves a running commentary of the historical movements and unique subcultures that have given rise to the events, personalities, and landmarks that define the City by the Bay. Neighborhood-by-neighborhood descriptions of sights, restaurants, and lodgings give visitors the practical information they need to carry out their own explorations. Detailed maps make it all easy to find. The perfect companion for a night on the town or a week's vacation, and equally useful to visitors and residents, San Francisco Handbook helps readers maneuver the real brick and asphalt streets of this city built of dreams.

Perfect book for visitors and residents alike.......2000-11-14
When I was handed this book, I started to flip through it--only to discover I couldn't put it down! As a resident of San Francisco, I was delighted to find the book included all the secrets I knew and then some. Ironic, playful prose and incredible tidbits of information abound, and the index--set up so that the entry for "Parks" is in a box with over 50 different parks listed--is incredibly helpful. The authors pay special attention to the variety and diversity of SF's neighborhoods, as well as taking care to point out all the incredible outdoor activities there are to do-hiking, walking tours, and the jaunt across the Golden Gate Bridge. A must have for any SF-bound visitor, and a plus for any resident.
Perfect book for visitors and residents alike.......2000-11-14
