Flowers- A Book With the Best Visual Details.......2005-01-17
I have greatly appreciated this book as an artist interested in details. Every flower photograph is large and shows every detail up close. The lighting is excellent. The photographs collected in this book were taken for Vogue and took seven summers to accomplish. You can see the carefull work that has gone into this book with no distracting background so you can appreciate the flower's full page details more outstandingly. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting great quality that is hard to find in newer "fluff" books.

Very classy, clean, elegant, refined photographs. Presented beautifully. A great photo book to own if you like more classic photography.
Irving Penn: A Career in Photography.......2005-08-19
Irving Penn: A Career in Photography is a book that examines the work and life of photographer Irving Penn. Several different writers and people associated with Penn have included text to describe their view of Penn and his life in photography. Colin Westerbeck, Issey Miyake, Martin Harrison, Edmund Carpenter, Rosamond Bernier, Colin Eisler, and Jennifer Jankauskas all contribute to the book. Writer and editor Colin Westerbeck invites the reader into the history of Irving Penn through a summary of Penn's life in his photo career. He begins with Penn's early fashion feature called "Flying Down to Lima" where after a case of airsickness, developed a new vision that changed his view of photography. Westerbeck also mentions Penn's different styles and renowned photo shoots including his many photos of various celebrities wedged into a narrow-angle corner he created out of theater flats, and also Penn's move to platinum prints. The remainder of the 200-page book comprises Penn's more famous photos. In total, there are 193 in the book, some which correspond to the text.
Irving Penn: A Career in Photography is an excellent book for anyone interested in photography, or even a professional looking for inspiration. Though it is a large book (approximately 10" by 12") its size is fitting for a photo book so that all the images can be easily seen and appreciated. The selection of photos is also suitable in that they are some of Penn's best and most known to the photo savvy, and are also mixed in genre. The text contributed by the aforementioned people help describe and reflect Penn's photos, and also show his many styles, techniques, and views on photography. Though these stories are informative to the reader, they can also get confusing and tough to read, as some of the writers tend to overuse unnecessary wording and phrasing. However, the excellent use of text/photo relationship in design and content work well in presentation, and contributes to an overall superb book.
Irving Penn: A Pioneer.......2005-08-18
One of the most significant photographers of the twentyith century, Irving Penn's captivating photographs throughout his career are wonderfully showcased in this book. From his humble beginnings as a graphic dsigner in the 1940's to his portraits of the native peoples from the far reaches of the world-Penn's work has had a major impact on not only the world of photography but aslo the art world as a whole. This retrospective of Penn's body of work is much more thorough than expected.
The graphic quality of his work really speaks to me as a graphic desiner; weather it be his rich photographs of nude women or his famous portraits of politicans, actors and fashion models. The numerous illustrations of Penn's well-known corner shot were a nice surprise in the book; many of these images are very difficult to find on the internet, it was great being able to study the nuances of the portraits up close. A beautiful and informative book that any Penn fan would love.
Terrific.......1999-09-01

Photographing The World.......2005-08-19
Irving Penn takes us on a journey while he photographs the people of the world. Using a portable studio in remote locations, Irving Penn is able to capture cultures like the Kirdi of Cameroon, Nepal, Morocco, Dahomey, Crete and New Guinea. He also captured the people of New York, Paris, London, San Franscisco, and Cuzco. Irving Penn describes the different locations he visits and his most memorable experiences. Penn not only shows his passion as a photographer but as a Human being while adapting to different cultures around the world as he photographs them.
The photographs in the book are astonishing. All of the photographs are lit with natural light and are shot in a studio. Penn captures the essence of culture in his photographs. The diverse people in the images allow you to see the different types of cultures that exist around the world.

Book Description
Irving Penn is acknowledged as a master of the still life genre. This is the first book devoted solely to Penns elegant and original still life work. Penn has personally overseen every detail of this exquisite books design and production. Still Life is certain to be one of the most powerful photography books of the new century.
Customer Reviews:
What's in a name?.......2002-10-08
This book should be titled "Food Photography and other Commercial Assignments" or "The Sixty-dollar Disappointment" or even, "How to make Money off of things I already got paid for." "Still-Life" is misleading as it indicates an artistic level this book does not attain to. If you're into Advertising photography, Penn is unique and often humorous but if you're looking for images to challenge you or reflect on, you will be disappointed, as was I. As for his personal work in this book, the question is, how many skulls and cigarettes do you want to look at? My personal opinion is, if you do something like that, do it, do it well, and move on. In short, most are sharp, well-lit, and well-printed but shallow, like most Advertising.
Classic Penn.......2002-06-10
Irving Penn has been making still life photographs for many decades, and this collection is a good representation of his work. Elegant black and white compositions of the 1940s, detailed groupings since the 1980s, and his in-your-face color that we see frequently in Vogue today, there is some of everything. My only complaint is this: I would like to see more of his ads for Clinique. Only two are reproduced here. There are hundreds more, and most are more interesting that the two selected for this book.
This is good but nothing new.......2001-10-10
Irving Penn is a great photographer and these images are wonderful. If you own other Irving Penn books, you probably have seen most of these. There's nothing wrong with mining old images and putting them in a book, but this is getting a little crazy.
Great images but if you have his other books, save you're money. If you want, you can buy me presents if the stuff is burning a hole in your pocket.
More for the Canon.......2001-08-30
A great achievement by the publishers, Little Brown, who are demonstrating committment to Penn's work with terrific reproductions and presentations of his work in this and the previous book devoted to the photographer's collaborations with Issey Miyake. Penn's still life work is an intriguing mixture of idiosyncatic, almost hermetic 'personal' photographs and his magazine work, mostly for Vogue. The range of subjects in the former category is diverse, from street trash to minimalist steel block constructions to animal skulls. The latter is similarly diverse, within the confines of the editorial demands of a glossy magazine. Stated simply, no-one does it better. When Penn trains his mind and eyes on a subject, it is made uniquely his own. These are works to ponder, not only because of their formal beauty, but also for the larger implications of people, objects and their inherent transience. John Szarkowski contributes his usual eloquent and generous prose in this very desirable book. Highly recommended for fans of Irving Penn and fine photography, old and new.

Book Description
This book displays the wordless harmony of the artistic relationship between Penn, one of the great photographers of the twentieth century, and the designer Issey Miyake, one of the few figures to have taken clothing design into the realm of art. This is an invaluable representation of the intuitive partnership between two artists that Miyake describes as a silent understanding.

Penn & Miyake: a match made in heaven.......2001-04-14
Irving Penn has, for decades, been one of the most remarkable fashion photographers, submitting clothes to his own crystal aesthetic in ways that bring their most interesting details to light. He is the perfect man to photograph the work of Issey Miyake, whose clothes demand an inventive and piercing eye to capture their astonishing detail and structure on film. This book, collecting dozens of Penn's photographs of Miyake clothes, spanning from the early 80s until now, shows that when Penn photographs Miyake's clothes, it is truly a collaboration (although Miyake is never present at the shoots and Penn has never been to a Miyake show), and the resulting photos are more perfect for the cooperation.

Thanks Mr. Penn........2006-08-07
Irving Penn is a wonderful photographer and this book is a unique opportunity for any serious student of photography (or Pro) to peak over the shoulder of a master. Penn's technical ability and sense of composition has always placed him in a unique position whether for Vogue magazine, Gianni Versace ads, or personal work. Unlike his other photo books "A Notebook at Random" addresses the ideas behind the images by showing the minimal notes and insightful line drawings that were the blue prints for some of his images. Thanks Mr. Penn for being so generous.
Irving Penn "A Notebook At Random".......2005-08-18
We often do not get the chance to view the notes, sketches, and thoughts that an artist goes through along side with the final piece, with this book that is what you are getting. This is not a book that biographies' the life and works of Irving Penn chronologically. Instead the book is fashioned in a random order, which gives us an insight into the inner workings of Irving Penn as a person.
Some of the highlights of this book are the amount of photographs which have never before been published or seen by the public, along with many of his signature pieces throughout his career. This book truly gives us a better understanding into the raw endowment, originality, and involvement as a photographic engineer and a daring artist.
Too much and not enough.......2004-11-02
This is unusual because it has virtually no written text. Thus, it is not for those who don't know Irving Penn, unless they are adventurous students of photography. This is evidently a collection of random works which together form a map of Penn's artistic mind. It is like a conversation with him about some of his work.
It contains sketches and photographs presented un-pretentiously, one on a page. Each one is a key or entry point into Penn's work and a hinge between him and the world of art and culture of his time. If you are not fresh off the turnip truck this is a book that may take a year to read as you think about each image and the infinite connections it has. If you are serious about photography and don't know Penn and his influence, this book will last you a lifetime as you study his sketch of the tree of those who influenced him. Any of his contemporaries mentioned on the tree could easily have erased his own name and put Irving Penn in his place, I think.
My favorites are his messing with his portrait of John Marin, his unusual portrait of Barnett Newman, and other sketches and scribblings on or about some of his familiar work. I was struck by his photographs of the street, and some other subjects few of us have ever seen. This book is revealing in much the same way as Earthly Bodies.
If you just like great photographs, this is a thought provoking, warm and modest tribute to one of the architects of the medium. If you are an artist and can't imagine being 87 and able to produce a random notebook this rich, you have a lot of work to do.
Book Description
One of the worlds preeminent photographers, Irving Penn is famous for portraiture, still life, and other commercial work. He is less well known as a superb photographer of the female nude. His most important pictures in this genre were made in 1949-50 during intense sessions with artists models that were essentially an artistic antidote to the ephemeral fashion world. Charged with powerful, physical, and sexual energy, yet somehow chaste, the images are among the most ambitious and successful nudes ever made. Sequenced to reveal the artists progressive exploration of his theme, the photographs constitute a remarkable wholea frieze of life based on a love affair with earthly goddesses.
Customer Reviews:
A new perspective on a master.......2002-02-03
Maria Morris Hambourg has made us a beautiful and important book, again. She has produced a silent essay from a collection of delicate and powerful private images. Untitled photographs, beautifully printed, they speak for themselves. She writes about the photographer and puts these nudes into the context of his life and his other work. What Hambourg writes about the relationship between artist and model is authentic and enlightening. A wide range of very strong and unique work is beautifully presented here. It is hard to imagine a more difficult book to create and impossible to find a flaw in the result.
It is still possible to miss the point of this book. Fanning the pages looking for what passes for beautiful bodies these days will tell you more about yourself than the artist.
This work will startle some people who know only Penn's famous portraits and fashion photographs. These are primitive, direct and pure essence of the subject, counterpoint to his highly refined public work. Penn uses the power of the raw photograph with great self-assurance to discover detail in otherwise very simple images. Some of his pictures seem unfinished, but the author makes it clear there are no accidents in these prints - they are as carefully done as his familiar published work.
Some images deliberately recall sculpture from Venus de Milo and Nike of Samothrace to the female scuptures from prehistoric caves. Some images draw on Stieglitz, Weston, and perhaps Bernhard. A lesser artist would just seem derivative but the few references to others simply reinforce the strength of Penn's own vision.
Hambourg shows us by her editing just how Penn worked. She includes one contact sheet that invokes the closeness of the "dance" between artist and model that most never see and photographers seldom want to show. Hambourg's deft touch greatly enriches this book without distracting from the artist.
Penn's nude photographs ranks with the nudes of Weston and only one or two others. It is a curious coincidence that the nudes of Weston, Stieglitz and Penn were all conserved and presented to us by women. That is sufficient reason to pay attention to how this work is presented.
