Twentieth-Century American Architecture: The Buildings and Their Makers
Carter Wiseman Manufacturer: W. W. Norton & Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0393320545 |
Book Description
Carter Wiseman presents an original, readable, and literate overview of the major figures, influential movements, and landmark buildings that have defined American architecture over the past hundred years. In a survey that is "as good . . . as anyone is likely to write . . . accurate in its facts, wise and fair in its judgments"(New York Times), he focuses to a large extent on architecture's makers--the commanding figures who by force of personality and sheer artistic ability indelibly influenced its progress: Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Philip Johnson, I. M. Pei, Robert Venturi, Louis Kahn, Frank Gehry. The triumph of modernism; the growth of architectural preservation; the eclipse of the practical arts by money, theory, and abstraction; and the uncertain future of architecture in a country that celebrates both individualism and community are just some of the issues addressed in this highly praised work. Originally published in hardcover under the title Shaping a Nation.Customer Reviews:

Cerámica y Cultura: The Story of Spanish and Mexican Mayólica
Manufacturer: University of New Mexico Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0826331025 |
Book Description
Brought to Spain in the thirteenth century by Islamic artisans, the enameled earthenware known as mayólica is decorated with a lead glaze to which tin oxide is added to create an opaque white surface. By the fifteenth century, several areas in Spain were well known throughout Europe for the quality of these ceramics, and with Spain's expansion into the New World the mayólica tradition came into Mexico. There it underwent further changes, notably the use of indigenous design motifs and patterns inspired by Chinese porcelain. Over the next three centuries, the potters of New Spain produced ceramics characterized by a distinctive mestizo aesthetic. This tradition continues today in both Mexico and Spain.Assembled in connection with a major exhibition at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, this book moves discussion of mayólica beyond its stylistic merits in order to understand it in historic and cultural context. The contributors, specialists in art and art history, architecture, anthropology, archaeology, and the folk arts, place the ceramics in history and daily life, illustrating their place in trade and economics. Examining both historic and contemporary examples, they also take us into the potters' workshops.
By examining both historic and contemporary examples, the editors move discussion of the enameled earthenware known as mayólica beyond its stylistic merits in order to understand it in historic and cultural context. It places the ceramics in history and daily life, illustrating their place in trade and economics.

The 2007 Import and Export Market for Generators, Cut-Outs, and Electrical Ignition or Starting Equipment Used for Spark-Ignition or Compression-Ignition Internal Combustion Engines in China
Philip M. Parker Manufacturer: ICON Group International, Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0497663910 Release Date: 2006-10-24 |
Book Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on generators, cut-outs, and electrical ignition or starting equipment used for spark-ignition or compression-ignition internal combustion engines in China face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying generators, cut-outs, and electrical ignition or starting equipment used for spark-ignition or compression-ignition internal combustion engines to China? How important is China compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of generators, cut-outs, and electrical ignition or starting equipment used for spark-ignition or compression-ignition internal combustion engines vary from one country of origin to another in China? On the supply side, China also exports generators, cut-outs, and electrical ignition or starting equipment used for spark-ignition or compression-ignition internal combustion engines. Which countries receive the most exports from China? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for generators, cut-outs, and electrical ignition or starting equipment used for spark-ignition or compression-ignition internal combustion engines in China. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for generators, cut-outs, and electrical ignition or starting equipment used for spark-ignition or compression-ignition internal combustion engines for those countries serving China via exports, or supplying from China via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where China fits into the world market for imported and exported generators, cut-outs, and electrical ignition or starting equipment used for spark-ignition or compression-ignition internal combustion engines. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for China in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that China is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize China compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

Book Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying generators, cut-outs, and electrical ignition or starting equipment used for spark-ignition or compression-ignition internal combustion engines? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of generators, cut-outs, and electrical ignition or starting equipment used for spark-ignition or compression-ignition internal combustion engines vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of generators, cut-outs, and electrical ignition or starting equipment used for spark-ignition or compression-ignition internal combustion engines? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing the regional markets for imported and exported generators, cut-outs, and electrical ignition or starting equipment used for spark-ignition or compression-ignition internal combustion engines. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for each region, is based on a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year.
