Book Description

What is the time scale for the settlement and cracking of an old stone building? How do the elegant flying buttresses of a Gothic cathedral safely transfer thrust to the foundations? And what is the effect of wind on a stone spire, or bell-ringing on a church tower? These and many other questions pertinent to the upkeep of old stone structures are answered in this clear and authoritative guide. With a firm scientific basis, but without the use of complex mathematics, the author provides a thorough and intuitive understanding of masonry structures. The basis of masonry analysis is introduced in the first two chapters, after which individual structures -- including piers, pinnacles, towers, vaults and domes -- are considered in more detail.

This lucid and informative text will be of particular interest to structural engineers, practising architects and others involved in the renovation and care of old stone buildings.

The book explains the design of massive masonry structures in simple, yet highly accurate, terms. It presents knowledge for the design of masonry structures that is even invaluable to practicing engineers.

5 out of 5 stars For Layman AND Engineer Alike.......2007-05-05

Jacques Heyman's text is without doubt one of the most interesting books I've read in the last couple of years. As an individual who became interested in gothic architecture after seeing my first gothic structure in person (the St. Eustache church in the Les Halles area of Paris, in 2001), and also has taken some engineering mechanics classes during my undergraduate work, my interest lead me to more fully explore this fascinating subject. Starting with identifying and visiting the principal gothic structures in France (with the help of such great books as Stan Parry's introduction to gothic architecture), naming the key architectural elements found in such structures, and describing the historical development of the style all the way from Suger's St. Denis to the emergence of the Renaissance, I was left with some unanswered questions. How do simple forms, such as the pointed arch, the flying buttress, and the barrel vault, actually operate? Why would such forms remain standing up, even when, in some cases, surrounding parts of the building had been destroyed in times of war, or perhaps by stone-robbing to build other structures (for example, structures at Ourscamp, Soissons, and Caen)? For that matter, why even use features such as the flying buttress, when other, simpler forms would suffice? The Stone Skeleton thoroughly answers these questions, not from an aesthetic or historical view, but from an engineering view, where thrusts, force vectors, the pull of gravity, and the physical properties of concrete and stone are the principal actors of interest. Although it is true that the book does investigate the subject through the lens of engineering (this is the books forte, and why it is such an invaluable addition to the subject), and the volume occupies itself at length with the examination of forces present in concrete and stone structures, most anyone with a moderate mathematical background and the patience to re-read a paragraph until the concepts become clear can profit from this text. In my mind, it is a missing link in the immense genre of gothic architecture texts.

I picture this text to have two related, but nevertheless discrete, audiences. The first is the one described above, the person who is interested in gothic architecture as an historical and aesthetic art phenomenon, and wishes to develop a greater understanding of the structural factors behind such structures. With a little work and patience, the text more than fulfils this need. But the second audience is the actual engineering student or in-practice engineer who wishes to develop a more sophisticated knowledge of the mechanics of concrete and stone structures. In this sense, I could easily see this work used as the textbook for an entire undergraduate or master's level course, or perhaps as a text for a directed independent study, where the end result is a comprehensive understanding of the mechanics of stone structures and the actual operation of the architectural devices present in gothic structures (barrel vaults, groin vaults, domes, arches, pointed arches, piers, flying buttresses, pinnacles, and so on).

I remember at some point in my gothic investigations I came up with a nagging question: why is the lower side of a flying buttress curved? Why not just lay a straight, diagonal beam from the outer wall of the building to the outer buttress pier? Was the curve added for aesthetics? Or was there some important design principle at play? Eager to find the answer and certain that this little fact would be easily discovered, I turned to my mini-library of gothic, only to be repeatedly disappointed (often, tantalizingly so, with texts that ALMOST addressed the question). The answer finally came in Heyman's text, along with many such similar questions. If you, too, are interested in such questions, this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderfully technical work.......2005-05-20

this work covers quite thouroughly the mathematics and mechanics of arches. It spends particular time on construction in the Gothic cathedrals including the barrel vault, cross vault, dome, and flying butress. It is beautifully illustrated and it presents the basic concepts as well as giving a quite extenisive theoretical analysis. A good book for anyone familiar with masonry and an essential for anyone involved in repairing and maintaining Cathedrals and other large stone structures.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the layman.......2003-05-10

There's no doubting this is an authoratative book. It's based on an article that first appeared in a professional journal, and I feel that is its real audience. I found myself in trouble shortly after the introduction, despite a couple of mechanics courses in graduate school. You may have better luck, but I think only practicing structural engineers will be able to enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars for people who enjoy engineering and masonry architecture.......2003-02-22

This is definitely a very well written book concerning structural engineering applied to medieval type of buildings. The practice at that time was driven by principles of geometry and physical proportion, and generally speaking masonry structures work well under this scheme.
The Stone Skeleton is a book that will catch the interest of students and even professional structural engineers who enjoy learning about both gothic cathedrals and buildings designed in a similar way.
A structural analysis textbook may come in handy should someone wishes to go deeper into the mathematical concepts of elastic versus plastic structural analysis and the design of domes and vaults. Other structural elements such as piers, pinnacles, flying buttresses and subjects such as cracking and settlements are also briefly discussed.

5 out of 5 stars This series is a great introduction to grammar!.......2007-09-24

I use this series of books throughout the school year in third grade before jumping into the parts of speech. They are a fun and engaging way to start off a lesson.

5 out of 5 stars Time to learn your grammar!.......2004-07-09

These books are so good at helping kids learn the parts of speech. They give so many clear examples of sentences, with the specific part of speech in a different color so everyone will notice it. I used these in a classroom during english class and they all loved it. A+ to this book!

5 out of 5 stars Takes the pain out of grammar!.......2002-12-04

Kudos to Brian P. Cleary and Brian Gable for their terrific book about Prepositions! My nine year-old learned all about the function of this difficult part of speech in the few minutes it took for us to sail through the funny, rhyming text. The illustrated cat-like characters are bright and colorful, and the prepositions themselves are highlighted to make thme easier to identify. Reminds me a little of the schoolhouse rock show from my childhood!

5 out of 5 stars My Students finally know this part of speech!.......2002-04-02

I teach 4th grade in a suburban school system where the kids are pretty bright, but prepositions have always been a little sticky for this age group. Brian P. Cleary's new book, UNDER, OVER BY THE CLOVER: What is a Preposition, is a class favorite, and also a favorite of mine because it takes on a kind of tricky part of speech and leaves my kids smiling. I liked his other books about nouns and verbs and adjectives also! This clarifies the preposition's role in our language, and is funny and catchy to boot!

          Customer Reviews:

          2 out of 5 stars 90% fluff.......2005-01-28

Clover 3 follows the story of Ora, a nightclub singer, and Sue, the fairy in the Clover series. Sue (in a cage but able to hear the outside world) hears Ora singing. She can phone Ora and so they talk on the phone and become close friends. Sue is delighted when they compose a duet together. Meanwhile we see Ora and her boyfriend Kazuhiko having warm fuzzy times.

This book is about 90% fluff. The actual story ending and all could be summarized into about a paragraph long story. There are tons of glamor shots of Ora singing on stage wearing fake wings and all sorts of crazy undergarment oriented costumes. Over and over we get to read the words to her repetoir of three songs. So you see some black and white drawings of a pretty girl with sappy poetry written on the same page. Many of these drawings are well done. These are graphic, with power but not much detail. There are also many poorly done drawings with not much detail or graphic element.

This book has a lot of unused space. Usually there will be a drawing in a small box set off center on a white page. There is not a single page in this book that is covered with a picture or with pictures. (Although for maybe 5 pages of the 90 this works and there is a nice flow.) Three 1.5 x 1.5 inch frames per page is about average. Maybe they were trying to set a certain mood and pacing. If so they failed.

Another issue I had with this book is that the lettering is all done by computer and is displayed in computer drawn circles or squares. It comes off as very awkward because often I had no idea who was saying which line in the dialog. This book seems like someone put it together with clip art of the characters and no idea of what they wanted to produce.

I couldn't see anyone actually paying for this. If you are borrowing it from a friend or from the library then it may be worth thumbing through. Even the time to investigate is a bit much of an investment for this story.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent prequel!.......2002-02-16

Clover 3 is a prequel of sorts to the events that take place in Clover 1 and 2. I think it's set about a year previous, but it may even be 6 months or so. At any rate, it introduces Ora (on the cover), whom we had previously only heard about and never seen. This story shows Ora and her affections for Kazuhiko, but it's mainly about how she and Sue came to know each other.

Clover #3 continues the wonderful CLAMP tradition of intriguing story and breathtakingly beautiful art (Clover really is a pinnacle of graphic design art). Ora's character design is flawless, and she is given a surreal exotic quality by what she says, but especially by how she looks and what she wears. There is no nudity in this, but a little bit of sexual innuendo. The main point, however, is about how love can develop between two people regardless of their situations. It's an excellent manga, a wonderful compliment to Clover 1 and 2, and I absolutely recommend it. It could, in theory, even stand on it's own, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice by only purchasing #3. Go get it!

            2 out of 5 stars Boring!.......2004-10-18

I found this book in my closet and decided to read this book again. The illustations in this book are cruddy like most of those cruddy book series. It is impossible for a girl that is 5 times as big as the smallest pony breed being able to RIDE him in shows and stuff. Only small toddlers can ride Shetlands. What is up with "Bahh!"? Mr. Clark (I think that is his name) always says that. Emma is a jerk since she calls us country style folks "Stupid" and "Dumb". The plot is really lame.

DON'T BUY THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 6!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sheltie the Shetland Pony.......2001-03-31

This is the best chapter book that I have ever read on my own - even better than the Magic Treehouse books! It is about a little girl named Emma who doesn't want to move, but then her parents surprise her with a pony, Sheltie. Sheltie is really sweet and nice but very mischievious. She solves a mystery in the story, with the help of Emma. I read it in one day because the story was so interesting and I liked the characters so much. I can hardly wait to read the rest of the books in the series.

            4 out of 5 stars Great Moral.......2001-01-06

My 7 year old daughter enjoyed reading this book to me and was so excited to know that she had figured the mystery out before the end. She also figured out the moral of the story before they had a chance to explain that stealing and lying was not appropriate. This is one of the first Horse stories that she has read and really sank her teeth in it. She was toting the book everywhere she went, which of course made me proud of her. What a morale booster for kids. The story was holsum and refreshing. We look forward to reading the rest of the series.

5 out of 5 stars sheltie the shetland pony.......2000-06-24

Excellent book for fairly new readers. My 6 year old read it on one go. She loved the characters, especially the main one, Emma. As always horse stories are a favorite among this age range. It is well set out, with just enough pictures for this age. My 7 year old enjoyed the story also, even though it was below her reading level,

                    4 out of 5 stars Nice story.......2003-11-09

Clover is the ten year old main characther, in this story of learning to deal with new things. When clover's father is killed in an accident, she expects to move in with her aunt and uncle, but instead her new stepmom, who is white plans to keep and raise her. Clover has to get use to a lot of new things, like eating different kinds of food, and just getting used to living with a stranger. I throught the book was good, and give reader's a look at two people from totally different ways of life learning to understand one another.

                    5 out of 5 stars Clover.......2003-10-16

                    Clover

"Well you can take your food and shove it!" Clover exclaimed.
Clover hates her stepmother's cooking. In her defense, Sara Kate honestly can't cook. Their crazy relationship becomes very clear as the story progresses. Clover is a ten year-old girl from Round Hill, South Carolina, who now lives with just her nagging stepmother. This is because Clover's father Gaten died in a tragic car accident a couple of days after he married Sara Kate. Sara Kate barely knows Clover and has to get used to living with her, just as Clover does.
Clover needs to move on in life and get comfortable with the fact that she has to live with Sara Kate. Clover is not used to living with another woman in the house, since her mother died when she was young too. I guess I would feel extremely uncomfortable if my mother and father died and I was left living with someone I didn't know. How would you feel?
Dori Sanders, the author of Clover is actually from York Town, South Carolina. Her father was an author and a principal just like Cover's father was in the story. After reading this book I became connected to Dori Sanders' writing and now she has become my favorite author. Dori Sanders might just become your favorite author too. While reading Clover I felt that this book was very suspenseful because it had me wanting to read on and on. This reminds me of another book I read called A Gathering of Days by Joan Blos. I think the reason why these books remind me of one another is because both of the main characters in each book have a new stepmother that they don't like in the beginning. I would recommend Clover to anyone, particularly to females. I think this book will seem more interesting to females because it focuses on the relationship between a stepmother and daughter. I would also recommend it to anyone that has stepparents and likes to read realistic fiction stories.

                    4 out of 5 stars Diverse Cultures.......2001-12-06

This story is about a young girl, Clover, who loses a father and gains a stepmother all in the same day. The story shows about a young girl in a whole new situation and a young woman in a whole new world. Clover, a gifted, talented young girl experiences loss like no other when her father is suddenly killed in an accident, which leaves Clover under the supervision of his new wife. To add to the anger and frustration of losing someone you love, Clover faces yet another challenge, that of living with a woman of another race. Sara Kate, a white woman, moves into Clover's black neighborhood. It seems that the color of their skin is not the only thing that is different between the two of them. In this story about love and acceptance, there is a growth that occurs in both of them. Clover will learn to accept her new stepmother and Sara Kate will learn to love Clover as her daughter. Learning to accept differences is a reccuring theme throughout the story. Dori Sanders manages to capture these differences with a great deal of humor. Her description of each character makes them come alive, even with Clover's dad, Gaten. Clover is a book that touches the heart, soul, and mind, and will affect all ages, young or old.

                    4 out of 5 stars Cool Book.......2001-10-19

I liked this book very much. It was very exiting and suprising. There were three very important charcters. They are Clover, she is the main main charcter there is Everleen, she is Clover's only aunt and there is Jim Ed, Clover's only uncle.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Modern Problem-A Traditional Solution.......2001-10-04

Dori Sanders delivers to her readers a compelling story about change, toleration, and true undying love, told through the eyes of a ten year old. Clover, a gifted, talented, and witty young girl experiences a loss like no other when her father is suddenly killed in an accident, which leaves Clover under the supervision of his new wife. To add to the madness and frustration, Clover faces another challenge, her stepmother. Clover is black, while her stepmother, Sara-Kate is white. It seems that the color of their skin is not the only thing they do not share in common. Thus, the journey begins for young Clover. Through this journey, she will learn to accept her newly found stepmother, and her stepmother too will learn to accept her. Learning to deal with differences whatever they may be, is a reoccurring theme in this story, and througout the book, Dori Sanders manages to capture these differences between the two with a great deal of humor. Although this book is very humorous at times, there are other points and places that will prick even the hardest of hearts causing a tear to fall here and there. Clover is a book that touches the heart, soul, and mind, and is definitely a book for all ages. It presents problems that everyone at some point in their lives has or will face. This story presents problems of childhood, change, death, and differences, while producing a positive remedy, which is love and understanding.
