Book Description
The private Andy Warhol talks: about love, sex, food, beauty, fame, work, money, success; about New York and America; and about himself--his childhood in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, good times and bad times in the Big Apple, the explosion of his career in the sixties, and life among celebrities.

Ghostwritten by Bob Colacello and Pat Hackett.......2007-07-03
According to page 208 of the Warhol Biography 'Holy Terror; Andy Warhol Close Up' by Bob Colacello (1990), Warhol delegated the actual writing of the book to Colacello and Pat Hackett. Colacello wrote the first draft and Hackett wrote the version that was published. Warhol's contribution was to set up the deal, offer a few suggestions and one-liners, and read the finished pages before they were sent off to the publisher.
If a silkscreen created by Warhol's assistants (carefully aping his art style) but signed by Warhol is still "authentic," does that mean an autobiography written by Warhol's assistants (carefully aping his speaking style) but credited to Warhol on the cover is still an "authentic" autobiography?
Colacello's biography also reveals that some of the text in the book was borrowed from press clippings written about Warhol. Page 207: "It was Andy's idea to cull phrases from the Factory clippings scrapbook to describe what he saw in his mirror: 'The affectless gaze... the wasted pallor... the childlike, gum-chewing naivete... the slightly sinister aura... the long bony arms, so white they looked bleached...'"
Like nearly all of Warhol's art, his Philosophy was our idea of Warhol, rearranged and reflected back at us. When explaining why he covered the original Factory with silver, Warhol offered a list of reasons ending with "...most of all, silver represents narcissism. Silver is the color of a mirror."
straight from the master.......2007-04-07
I used to think that Andy Warhol was not a real artist, only a great self promoter. This book, written in his own words, proved my prejudice to be completely wrong and uncalled for. Much of what we encounter today in popular culture was forecasted in this book by Warhol. If only the best economists could even be 10 percent as right about their forecasts!
Andy Would Be Pleased.......2007-02-21
I had a great buying experience. The book was in mint condition and came within a reasonable time.
Loved this quirky read!.......2006-12-07
I was hanging out at a Borders one afternoon when i got hold of this book and I read all 200 something pages in a few intense hours! I'm sure the borders staff didnt appreciate me reading this gem for free but I honestly couldn't peel myself from it. What a character this Warhol guy was. Check this one out!!!
Of course it's brilliant, and it's b.s., which is why it's brilliant..........2006-09-19
Seriously, at a certain point when I was around 18 or 19, this was my Bible, or my Little Red Book - I and a handful of friends (Warhol died at about the same time) took every syllable here very, very seriously.
This is kinda funny to me now, but it's a great book still, a truly unique cultural artifact. Warhol - as always maintains the trademark deadpan aloofness here, which had a few odd purposes beyond simply looking cool: there were rare instances when he'd drop his guard and a hint of social relevance would enter the frame, which did run contrary to most of what Warhol did, here especially. Doing so would turn art into something didactic, and - as a joke doesn't work if you have to explain the punch line, art flops if you have to lead your viewers, or readers, by the hand into your meaning. Thus Warhol's stylish glibness and affected cool served a brilliant purpose - it made demands of everyone who came into contact with it.
Here we have Warhol's epigrams - spread out like some artboy approximation of 'Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung,' all about equally quotable, useless, devoid of literary merit, yet (unlike the leaden and ideologically bankrupt Chairman) also stylish and memorable, even at their most zoned out.
The other great method behind Warhol's facades is here as well - the same impulse that turned canned soup into the artworks of a once very, very poor 2nd-generation immigrant's child (if you were going hungry, Campell's soup would in fact become, and possibly remain, a beautiful thing, and we all know that beautiful things are and always will be one of the most fitting of subjects for art). These cryptic sayings and jottings all seem constructed to get us all to see the small stuff for what it is, and learn to appreciate it for that.
Warhol was like Elvis - all things to all people. And about as maddening, contradictory and semiotically intriguing as Elvis. This slim little book is one of his strangest and most magnificent achievements.

Good for beginners.......2003-12-14
This book provides very detailed instructions and is therefore suitable for beginning painters.
It begins with a general introduction then moves to specific techniques, and ends with 5 demonstrations.
Though it is meant to accompany the TV series, I found it useful as a stand-alone

A Labor of Love.......2001-08-15
The entire Bullock experience of Photography might be described as a "Labor of Love". Following the death of her husband, acclaimed photographer Wynn Bullock, Edna Bullock picked up her first camera. Wynn's camera that is. What emerged was a style that is pure. So uniquely Edna. The nude body in nature so positively merged with the environment as to enrapture the viewer and cause pure awe. Edna's ability to "compose" reflected years of true understanding of the fine art that is black and white photography. What a gift! This book is further enhanced by the words of Barbara Bullock-Wilson, Edna's daughter. A must have for any serious collector.

Somewhat interesting but unnessecary.......2003-05-06
If your a fan of the filmed adaptation of Max Allan Collins' "Road To Perdition" but haven't read the graphic novel upon which the movie is based, I suggest you pick up a copy today. The story is masterfully told by Collins and features gritty, brutally realistic artwork by the great Richard Piers Rayner that effectively captures the essence of the 1930's. "On The Road To Perdition: Oasis" is the first of three new graphic novellas written by Collins that are intended to serve as a continuation of his original story and also written presumably to cash in on the popularity of the movie adaptation. Rather than serve as sequels to the story presented in both the original graphic novel and the film, the new "On The Road To Perdition" series instead features three untold tales of adventures that Michael O'Sullivan and his son had as they made their treacherous journey to Perdition, Kansas. For fans of the original, "Oasis" is a somewhat interesting affair but pales in comparison to the original story. Collins seems to be on autopilot with this one, scripting a story that feels rushed. Fans of the original graphic novel will also be disappointed to learn that Richard Piers Rayner does not return to do the artwork for this story and his presence is sorely missed. On the upside, Collins introduces three new endearing characters not previously seen in the original story and the relationship between Michael and his son is explored further with results that are quite touching. The subplot involving the three bounty hunters feels a tad redundant if your familiar with Jude Law's character in the movie (who does not appear in the original graphic novel) but it does add an interesting element to the story. All in all, this is one is for diehard fans of the original graphic novel only. It's far from terrible, but Collins should have left well enough alone.

Book Description
The basis for the major motion picture, ROAD TO PERDITION is an enthralling crime noir story of revenge, morality and family loyalty. Michael OSullivan is a deeply religious family man who works as an Irish mob familys chief enforcer. But after his elder son witnesses one of his fathers hits, the godfather orders the death of OSullivans entire family. Barely surviving an encounter that takes his wife and younger son, OSullivan and his remaining child embark on a dark and violent mission of retribution against his former boss. Featuring accurate portrayals of Al Capone, Frank Nitti and Eliot Ness, this book offers a poignant look at the relationship between a morally-conflicted father and his adolescent son who both fears and worships him.

Father and Son against the Mob........2007-07-18
A 2007 Summer reading list mini review.
Road to Perdition is a disturbing tale of family loyalty and vengeance set in Al Capone era Chicago and it's surrounding communities. It is expertly imagined, written and drawn. That's right drawn. I read a comic book for part of my summer reading list.
Actually, they prefer the title graphic novel these days. And everything about this novel is graphic, this is definitely an R rated book with swearing and violence abounding. The story is a part coming of age, part Robin Hood and mostly The Godfather. It has action and a heart. Again, it is not for kids, but all in all it's a good read.
A classic prohibition era story, one of my all time favorites........2006-09-18
I was sold on Road to Perdition by simply flipping through the pages, the art is absolutely gorgeous. I've never seen anyone draw this particular period so perfectly. Like the characters of the Godfather, the people presented in Road To Perdition are, in ways, very human. However, the element that makes this story so colorful is seeing characters who's lives are largely alien to us as they deal with problem we can all relate to. Problems such as loss of family and conflicts of loyalty. If you happen to be a high level mobster I assume the premise of stories like this one would somewhat less intriguing.
This isn't Watchmen, or Sandman, or Maus. This is a familiar story set in a time period we've all seen before, and that bothers some people. But, the story is very well told and does have some interesting twist. The art is complimentary and excellent on it's own at the same time.
This story doesn't pretend to be something it isn't, it's just a good solid story. In my mind, that constitutes as it's own sort of genius.
You must choose a road for yourself........2006-03-11
This is a great black and white "noir" graphic novel. There was a movie based on it, which you may have seen. The book is better, in my opinion. It is masterfully written, and the art is great. It's almost 300 pages long, but it just flies by. Highly recommended.
Could have used a bit of fleshing out........2005-08-23
Max Allan Collins, The Road to Perdition (Paradox, 1998)
This is, of course, best-known as the basis of Sam Mendes' second feature film. And, to be honest, I think I'd probably have liked the book better had I not seen the film. There were some details David Self's screenplay filled in that made the ending of the book a little less deus ex machina, but I'm not sure I'd have even noticed had I not seen the film.
You already know the plot: the son of a hitman steals along with his father one night and sees the kind of work his father does. This leads to a war when dad's boss tries to have him and his family killed, and dad's primary goal is to try and get son to safety. However, while they're on the run, dad is forced by circumstance to realize that son is actually kind of good at doing some of the ancillary things that need done when one is involved in a life of crime (for example, being a getaway driver).
The graphic novel's main failing seems to be encountered in that plot; it seems to me as if the father, for all his telling the kid that he doesn't want him in this way of life, would have at least recognized, if not entertained, the idea of a "like father, like son" life, especially given the amount of time they're out on the road. But no; the father is a bit too much the bad-guy-with-the-heart-of-gold, leaving the heavy pontificating to the son. Despite that, however, there's a lot to be liked here. The characters are well-done, for the most part (Connor Looney, especially, is more three-dimensional in the film than the book), and as always, Collins' inclusion of historical figures make a good anchor for the reader.
Likable, but read it before you see the movie. *** ½
the book that will keep u coming back for more.......2005-05-05
Revenge is always sweet no matter how bitter you have to be to taste it. In the book Road to Perdition by Max Allen Collins, a mobster named Angel has to cope with the murder of his wife and his oldest son. After the massacre of Angel's family he turns to any possible way to make the man responsible pay! With his boss and his boss's son betraying him there is no better target than them, the people that made him suffer! After killing everything in his way, he has to get to Mr. Looney he thinks to himself why, will he kill him you will have to read the book to find out. The Road to Perdition by Max Allen Collins is an action-packed book and has so much suspense that you wont be able to set it down I know I did not, if you choose to read the book you just have to remember the old saying, expect the unexpected.
Customer Reviews:
Fun, a bit cheesy.......2006-06-21
I absolutely loved the Road to Perdition movie. In fact, I walked out of the movie the first viewing and went straight to the bookstore to buy the Road to Perdition graphic novel.
This book is a collection of three smaller 100 page books that take place at random spots in the timeline established in the Road to Perdition original book. It's more support of the core story than moving the story along.
This book is interesting if you like the Road to Perdition storyline, but some of the writing gets a bit cheesy, especially in the last book.
All around, a fun read.
