Book Description
The Newspaper Designer’s Handbook is a step by step guide to every aspect of newspaper design, from basic page layout to complex infographics. The new edition is now in 4-color and introduces a new chapter on web design.
This textbook is for journalism students and professionals alike. It is loaded with examples, advice, design ideas, and exercises that teach students how to manipulate the basic elements of design (photos, headlines, and text); create charts, maps, and diagrams; design attractive photo spreads; add effective, appealing sidebars to complex stories; create lively, engaging feature page designs; work with color; and redesign a newspaper.
Customer Reviews:
The rules of good newspaper design.......2007-07-03
Tim Harrower provides a very practical guide to newspaper design. The art of newspaper design tends to be very subjective, so this book lays down some facts and guidelines to put to rest some of the indecisive elements of design.
For a beginner, this is a book that will give you the confidence and understanding to conquer page layout.
The CD gives the novice an even more practical guide than the book can deliver.
One criticism is that the book is printed on light gloss stock and is spiral bound. I am not sure how it was survive rough treatment.

A must have .......2007-06-14
When I accepted my first "real" job in journalism as a page designer for a local weekly I was struck by a horrifying thought, I really knew nothing about newspaper design. I had done it before for my college paper, sure, but this was the big time. I needed a refresher course and I needed it fast... Tim Harrower and this spiral-bound book came to my rescue.
Although it was first published in 1989, this book will be relevant as long as newspapers exist, even in this age of computer design. Harrower explains and shows why certain designs are good and bad and he approaches it in a situational, problem-solving format. For example, he explains what should be done when you have to design a page with no art, when you have butting headlines, or two horizontal photos etc. Harrower says that most page designers stumble into the job and from this point of view he explains what exactly, a good design is. This book will always be on my desk.
(I wish my publications professor used this instead of the worthless $105 monstrosity he made us buy (and that we never used by the way).)
So, after some mild freaking out followed by a lot of reading, I can start my new job with confidence thanks to this book.
Practical and useful for the professional.......2006-07-22
I am an editor these days.
I came on this book quite a few years ago when I was a sub. It was recommended to me by an old hand in the newspaper game.
Without doubt, it is the single best aquisition I have made in terms of newspaper design.
In the places I have worked, I have been regarded extremely highly for my layout skills.
This book, with a little creativity, is the basis of almost everything I do in terms of layout.
If you are serious about the newspaper game, get it, study it and then apply what you learn. It will help our career enormously.
Awesome Textbook.......2006-03-19
This textbook is awesome. I've never seen a better textbook. It lays everything out, and makes it simple to understand. It tells you what to do and what not to do in simple language and clear pictures. It's one of few textbooks worth keeping for future use in your career (provided you're going into the newspaper industry)!
No customer service.......2005-10-26
I ordered the hardbound and got the spiral bound, a product worth $12 less. It was then that I discovered there is no way to express a complaint to Amazon: no phone number, no email address, no human help. All that is available is a maze of pre-written web help, none of which includes "credit my account $12, since I don't want to go through the hassle of sending this book back." What's up, Amazon? Don't you want satisfied customers? I spend literally hundreds here each year. This egregious deficit needs to be fixed immediately. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
This fine collection of projects requires only a few simple tools and a basic knowledge of metal working to complete. The wide assortment of ornamental designs presented here can be forged, using inexpensive scrap metal, into beautiful yet fully functional items for around the house, to be given as gifts or sold at craft shows and bazaars. Step-by-step, illustrated instructions describe how to mold decorative plant stands, hanging lamps, vases, scrolled brackets and hinges, wind vanes, letter racks and openers, and much more. Projects for the kitchen are especially useful: hammered bowls and trays, napkin rings, tableware, escutcheon plates with handles, pastry cutters, and a variety of accessories. Except for a brief introductory section on special metalworking techniques, the book provides self-contained directions and line drawings for each project. And, while no heavy bending or welding is necessary, many of the projects can be enhanced by readers who have experience with a propane torch.

Product Description
8X10 Hardcover edition originally published in Germany 1995. This book covers the art of metal working( Chasing and Repousse') and a little on the history - plenty of illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Copied from Brain Press Reviews.......2007-06-21
This book is a long overdue treat for jewelers, blacksmiths, sculptors, and all artists of metalwork. It has information on chasing and repoussé in greater depth and detail than any other volume today available in the English language. Painstakingly translated from German this text is a valuable resource for both the professional and the hobbyist. Adolf Steines is clearly a master metalworker who enthusiastically demonstrates his creativity, knowledge, skill, and experience. The book thoroughly addresses the workroom, tools, materials, working surfaces (including carpeting and pitches), transfer of designs, sinking, raising, stamping, chasing, repoussé, engraving, soldering, etching, as well as the coloring and protection of metal surfaces. Numerous examples of the author's works are illustrated including large scale doors, fountains, memorials, wall sculptures and portraits, as well as many delicate jewelry pieces. A number of tricks and special techniques are described, such as using air powered hammers for forming and chasing. Profusely illustrated with very clear drawings and quality photographs of objects and procedures, this book is essential for the library of every serious artist working with metal.

French and Men at their BEST.......2005-08-15
This is perhaps the most beautiful of photgraphic collections by Jim French. It is regal and a total delight to the mind and libido.
One of the Photographer's Finest Collections.......2005-03-25
OPUS DECORUM is a book without words. This is simply a portfolio of the artistry of Jim French, one of the more respected art photographers of the male nude. French's proclivity is for the massive muscular male captured wither in nature or in studio, always with an eye for light and shadow and settings that enhance the bulk of his models.
These are powerful images from Fire Island to Hawaii to Malibu to the studio. His models are graciously credited in the back of this portfolio along with the location and year when the photo session occurred. French seems to favor the body in extremis as far as posing. At times he allows his models to be at rest, but more often he has them engaging in some source of physical exertion that emphasizes the mass of the worked male physique. They are truly the "Work of the Gods" of the title.
The book is well designed and the photography is reproduced on the finest paper. For those who admire the study of the nude, this is a valuable addition to the library. Grady Harp, March 05
Another Book of Tasteful Men.........2000-08-08
If you enjoy classic photography, especially beautiful people set against artistic backgrounds, then this book is for you.
Mr. French's models tend to be handsome, muscular men at the height of their appeal ( mid twenties to forty). He poses them in classic positions with artistic props.
This book is no exception.
If you collect the photography of Herb Ritts or Scavullo this book belongs along them in your collection.

French Perfection.......2005-08-15
It is impossible to stay anything negative about the work of Jim French. This is another example of the fine work of this modern photographic master.

Book Description
"Red lace, yellow lace. . . learn to tie your shoe." A set of verses, step-by-step color illustrations, and a model child's shoe with real laces are the components of this charming, instructive package that gently challenges toddlers' hand-eye coordination. The illustrations show a pair of hands and a pair of laces, close up and in detail-and the model shoe gives kids something to practice on.
Customer Reviews:
Red Lace.......2007-09-01
The book was wonderful and my son learned how to tie his shoes within 2 days of receiveing the book.
Loose strings no more!.......2007-03-18
We have a son with albinism who has trouble seeing some things, but this book with his large, easy-to-manage size, and two colored strings, was a big help to him. He can now understand how the string should go and has nearly mastered the art of tying his own shoes!
He can tie his shoes!.......2007-01-11
My son loves this book. It has tought him to tie his shoes. We spent time together while I read it to him, he tied the shoe. It's fun
Great Book for learning to tie!.......2007-01-11
This is a great tool for your children. I do daycare in my home, and one of my kids learned to tie in one day!! The only down side to this book is that it teaches children how to tie the "two loop" method, which is not my preferred method of tying.
Not the best........2007-01-09
It is not the best. It is actually confusing to me....We really don't use the book because it is confusing. We had to relace the book because they had the colors backwards and then they try to explain how to tie your shoes by making two bows at first then tieing the bows together.

Book Description
What color do you see? Red? Yellow? Blue? Here is a concept book young children can grow with, as they explore colors, sizes, shapes, and relationships with the master of the photo-concept book ' Tana Hoban.
Customer Reviews:
interesting photos.......2006-03-11
My 17 month old likes to focus on the interesting pictures in this book. He is are also learning to identify the colors when I point to the color circles, but right now, my son is most interesting in staring at the pictures. I was surprised to learn that the book has no story---but we get creative with making our own stories to match the pictures. Nice book.
That's right. All the colors of the rainbow........2004-01-31
Any book of color photographs runs a very great risk of being dated. Color photographs fade so easily, and styles change so quickly that this book could easily be shunted into the realm of forgotten children's literature. But take a look at it, even once, and your perceptions will change instantly. This book is about color. And its photographs fairly throb with life and vitality, the like of which you'll have great difficulty finding in any kids books published today.
The book begins with a key. Red, yellow, blue, orange, green, and purple are arranged next to corresponding circles of the same color. As you flip through the book, these circles appear at the bottom of the page, indicating what colors can be found in each individual picture. As the kids go through the book, they can flip back to the key at the front to determine what the name of each color is. As they use this book, they will learn their colors, and eventually be able to use the text without constant flipping backwards and forwards.
And the photographs? As an artist who has shown her works in the MOMA, Toban's photos are best described on the back of the book as, "an artistic statement as well as an introduction to reality". The shots are of city scenes, brimming with color and action. The children caught in these pictures are multi-ethnic, playing and running and posing. Regardless of where a child lives, this book will inspire any kid who has ever wanted a look at a beautiful multi-colored America. You could do worse than to buy this book for your kids. And you could certainly do no better.
Wow - pictures of the city..........2003-07-06
and they're luscious! This is the book that first awakened my daughter (at 19 months old) to speaking about color. But regardless of color concepts, I would have wanted to share these photographs, which make me love things like a broken umbrella in a trash can. It's art for toddlers: She was absorbed.
Great for visual learners.......2001-11-11
I've used this book in my early childhood art classes. The children love to find the items in the photographs that match the colored circles on the bottom of each page. With few words and many visual surprises, this book, as with so many of this author's works, helps us to become more visually aware of our surroundings. I highly recommend Tana Hoban's concept books to parents, early childhood educators, and all who delight in re-discovering the familiar. Her photography skills, powers of observation, and visual wit help us to see the world anew!
Has color but not many pages.......2001-11-05
I would not highly recommend this book, has colors but not enough pages, not worth the price.
See other review on book with Fruit, Alphabet and Color - that is a better book.
