Book Description
In an old printing shop in Rotterdam, MVRDV produces designs and studies in the fields of architecture, urbanism, and landscape design. Founded in Rotterdam in 1991 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and Nathalie de Vries, MVRDV has become a household name in the Netherlands and beyond. With experimental research projects and mind-bending architecture, MVRDV has carved itself a niche in the international scene over the past 10 years. Classic projects include the gravity-defying WoZoCo old age home in Amsterdam, the headquarters for public broadcasting company VPRO in Hilversum, the Dutch pavilion for World Expo 2000 in Hanover, and the recently completed Housing Silo in Amsterdam. The firm's experimental research projects on density, using a method of shaping space through complex amounts of data, have resulted in the publication FARMAX, the traveling exhibition Metacity/Datatown, and Pig City and Costa Iberica. This publication examines the context of MVRDV's research-based thinking and radical design strategies. Texts by a number of international critics, philosophers, and architects probe into the whys and wherefores of MVRDV's architecture, the potential of the data-scapes, and the secret of the firm's success. Contributors compare MVRDV with other generations of architects and describe how new concepts are born.

Book Description
This follow-up to the highly successful Blitz Cartooning Kit (more than 250,000 units sold) teaches the basics of cartooning in a completely innovative way thanks to the exciting new Blitz Re-Tooner. In addition to traditional drawing exercises and games, the kit allows any fledgling cartoonist to create original drawings on a clever wipe-away surface that packs neatly away. Blitz's 56-page book presents page-by-page projects that are done with the Re-Tooner--a plastic box set at an incline by risers on the bottom for ease and comfort in drawing. The user slides one of 50 Re-Tooner sheets beneath the clear plastic surface, which can be drawn on and wiped clean again and again. The Re-Tooner sheets feature partial illustrations and guidelines for learning a particular lesson that's detailed and cross-referenced. BLITZ ULTIMATE CARTOONING KIT comes with the instruction book, Re-Tooner, two black markers, one wipe-away cloth, and 50 Re-Tooner sheets.

Wonderful.......2006-03-15
My children all love it. Ages 10, 9, 7 and 5. Very entertaining as a family activity.
You can become a cartoonist instantly!.......2005-02-20
I am a teacher who really likes to draw cartoons on my board but honestly I don't know how. I used to memorise a face or two to use but now with this kit, things are much easier. There are 50 retooner boards in which you can learn about drawing faces, features, bodies, and everything you need. You can create so many drawings and even retooner cards from th accompanying book or even Blitz Big Book of Cartooning. My poor 8, 6, 3-year old kids just opened their mouths with excitement and just looked at the cartoons i created. By the way the kit is for me not them and so they have to earn their kits by being really nice kids. I am sure I can't wait to buy each one of them the tool to be great cartoonists.

THE ULTIMATE CARTOONING BOOK.......2002-04-16
Do you want edge-of-your-seat excitment? A real thriller that'll scare your pants off? Well you're not gonna find it here, but you will find the BEST cartooning book ever. With sections on backrounds, heads, bodies, and even caracatures, the only thing that you might find wrong with it is that, like it says, it's only the Basics. You'll wish it will go on for ever and ever and ever and ever and ever...
Fantastic!.......2001-12-28
Ordered as a Christmas gift for my 10 year old son and he absolutely loves it. He started out following the book's drawing directions and soon branched off into freehand using what he learned from the book.
A definite must for a beginning artist. It's a fun and interesting way to learn the basics.
Great Book.......2000-04-13
This book teaches great skills for those just wanting to learn the art of cartooning. I highly recomend it for your artistic child who can broadin his/or her artistic views of the world. Cartooning is also great for young children and this book makes it great.

Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2007-09-30
The book is actually pretty good. I was disappointed in the chapter on raw. I am new to this software and processing in raw format. What the book shows and my version 5 is completely different. I sent an email asking if they could explain the features since it is so different. I listed each, they said "I believe that Camera Raw was updated after the publication of our book." Also they informed me that they don't have a help desk. I have seen publications print corrections etc. that you are able to obtain. If raw is unimportant get it, if you want to learn about raw get something else.
Photoshop Elements 5.0 Book for Digital Photographers.......2007-09-29
A book for the beginner. Scott Kelby is a funny guy, makes the book bearable. Can start at the beginning of the book, or just go to where you need help.
Gotta have it!!.......2007-09-24
This book offers great and easy detail on learning more about using elements. Anyone that has purchased phtoshop elements needs this book. I love it !!!
Great book .......2007-09-23
Pros: The instructions are very clear. It is great book for beginners
Cons: This is a great book for beginner/intermediate user. If you look for advanced skills, then you may need some other books or resource.
Perfect Book for Photoshop Beginners.......2007-09-18
I've always used Microsoft Digital Image Pro, but found Photoshop Elements on clearance one day and decided to buy it. However, I kept going back to Digital Image Pro until I ordered this book. I am constantly referring to this book and slowly I've started to memorize the steps of my most favorite techniques. I've since upgraded to Photoshop CS2 and I still use this book. I either refer to the Table of Contents or the index to find what I'm looking for. The directions are listed step by step and are easy to understand. What I find very helpful are the "screen prints" of Elements so you can actually see what the author is referring to.
Some of my favorite tips are how to whiten teeth, how to change the color of an object, and how to change the background. There are many, many more tips in this book that I use often and love - these are a just a few examples.

Any book by Tim Grey is terrific, and this is no exception. I use it for teaching.
Disappointing.......2007-04-11
This textbook was not what I was expecting. Albeit, the author attempts to provide concrete examples of projects, I found the supporting text difficult to follow. Stock photos are nice, but that's about it. If you are a novice, or new to PSE 5 this book isn't for you.

Adobe Photoshop 5.0 for Photographers bridges the differences and illustrates the connections between traditional, hands-on, chemically intensive photographic processing and manipulation and its computer-based alternative. With its graphically rich examples and detailed diagrams of Photoshop 5.0's user interface, this book will easily transition users with an eye for images into the digital methodology.
Adobe Photoshop 5.0 for Photographers makes no assumptions about the reader's level of proficiency with the popular software. Instead, it begins with an examination of the many means of acquiring images (the fuel for Photoshop) through digital cameras, scanners, and from CD-ROM collections for your PC. Once you've set up the necessary hardware, the book walks you through Photoshop's tools in thematically arranged sections like "montage" and "image repair and retouching." Traditional photographic savvy is well-placed throughout the book, particularly during the discussion of color-toning images (like those in sepia-toned photos) in which this book contrasts the chemical bleaching and dying method of old with Photoshop's Duotone tool.
The accompanying CD-ROM includes tutorial movies related to the examples used in the book. Any "through the lens" photographer considering abandoning the darkroom for a graphics workstation will find Adobe Photoshop 5.0 for Photographers to be required reading. --Ryan Kuykendall
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book for Photographers going Digital.......2000-06-15
I think this book is a wonderful overview of not only Photoshop techniques which directly apply to a photographer, but also a lot of information about the scanning, saving, and printing process. It makes the world of Digital Graphics real for a photographer. I recommend this book to photographers out there who are getting started with the digital processes. It clears the smoke.
Great Book.......2000-05-12
This is a GREAT book. I've read a lot of Photoshop books about levels and curves, but this was the first book to show me how to actually use them to color correct scanned images. The other books tell you how the levels and curves work, but this book showed my how to use them to evaluate an image and then correct the image. This is also the first book that really taught me how to use the measure tool to automatically rotate an image to a level position. It's full of tips like that. I keep a pile of my most frequently used reference books next to my computer, and this is the one that's usually on the top of the pile. This is not a photoshop beginners book, but I use tips from this book all the time on all of my images.
A flawed but useful book.......1999-11-30
Firstly, Martin Evening is a Photoshop wizard. Unfortunately he has difficulty conveying his knowledge. Reading this book is a bit like listening to an expert mumbling away to himself about his field of expertise. You have to strain to glean the information, but it is there nevertheless. Furthermore, he has assumed an odd starting position of the reader. He assumes you have years of experience with commercial printing, and that you are familiar with older versions of Photoshop. He wastes too much space explaining how things used to work in previous versions. This book will not teach you Photoshop. Learn Photoshop (read the Adobe manual), become a power user, and then read this book (a few times to make sense of it).
can be improved in the next edition.......1999-11-02
I think it is a very useful source of information how to use Photoshop to improve quality of scanned photographs or digital images. Unfortunately, the book has several significant drawbacks, which hopefully will be improved in the next edition. First of all, the enclosed CD-ROM does not contain the images presented in the book, so there is no simple way to get "hands-on" experience with the techniques discussed in the book. The description of the steps suggested to solve each particular problem is sometimes way too short to follow, and is difficult to memorize because you cannot reproduce the suggested steps on your computer since you do not get the tutorial files. The first half of the book, a short description of Photoshop 5 for the users of the previous versions of photoshop, is rather useless, from my point of view: I think that those who have recently upgraded to Photoshop 5 already know how to use the new features, while those who never worked with Photoshop will not understand much from that short description. Putting this all in one sentence, this book contains great material, but the presentation of it could be much better.
A Great Resource.......1999-10-21
I am finding this book to be extremely helpful. I have no idea what a previous reviewer was referring to as "oral jargon" but the use of "English" English can trip up American readers once in a while. The book does tend to be terse, I have had to re-read sections to truly understand what the author meant. Trying to use this book without a copy of Photoshop at hand to test techniques for yourself is a bad idea.
The illustrations are small but extremely clear and very readable. These small illustrations are usually limited to low-density information such as sample dialog boxes. The photographic examples are produced very well.
The emphasis is on using Photoshop to get photos ready for reproduction. As the author clearly states several times, correctly, very few people will ever see the original transparency or negative. They will see a print, a magazine, a calendar, etc. There is a short section on scanners but it is not complete. But then, I didn't buy the book hoping to learn about scanning techniques.
The emphasis on service bureaus is extremely relevant, even for amateurs such as myself who have no intention of getting into the business. Many of the techniques and considerations required for getting a digital file ready for a magazine are the same as printing to an Epson at home. Also, most serious amateurs will not be happy with limiting themselves to home ink-jet output. They will find themselves sending digital files off to service bureaus for vastly improved results. I'd rather know how to optimize a file for a Lightjet 5000 myself than rely on the personal tastes of the machine's operator.
All in all, a good job.

Customer Reviews:
Very well written book.......2001-08-01
The book is very well written and seems to be complete. The Author has made several assumptions that may limit the usefullness and readablity of the book. He assumes that we are all planning to be commercial photographers with our work being prepared to be published and he seems to think that we have unlimited budgets and can afford scanners, cameras and printers that cost several thousand dollars apiece. One other small complaint is that the author being English has used numerous terms and measurements that are unfamiliar. A good book for advanced photographers
Very detailed and useful.......2001-06-17
This is a dense book of how-to's and why's. An excellent book for advanced users of Photoshop.
Mostly a fine book, with two shortcomings.......2001-06-03
I concur with most of the positive things that have been said about this book, BUT ... it is limited as a learning tool
Unfortunately, the images printed in the book are not included in the CDROM. The author's excuse is that they are copyright images and therefore can't be included. My view is that he chose the wrong photos, since it is now impossible to follow along with his book in photoshop.
My second beef is that his descriptions are sometimes unnecessarily complex and lack clear direction. Again, I am looking at this book package as a source of learning.
The big shortcoming is the lack of alignment of the CDROM with the book. I felt badly let down. If you forget about the CDROM, you will be much happier and probably give him 5 stars.
Comprehensive!.......2000-12-06
Excellent book! As the title says so, most of the techniques are inclined towards photography retouching and enhancement, but it will appeal to most photoshop users. The 1st few chapters touch on fundamentals and serves as an instant guide, much better than the user guide. The other all-important criteria that I always look out for: FULL COLOR! I cannot imagine using a book on photos in b&w....how to see instant results to ease following the steps/techniques? The only bad thing is that most photos shown in the book are copyright and you will have to find comparable images yourself to work on.
An excellent companion book would be Photoshop 5 Artistry.
Almost perfect - a great learning tool.......2000-11-24
The biggest advantage, and I consider it a must, is the examples are in color, not B&W. Do not waste your money in any Photoshop book printed only in B&W.
Most of the techniques were illustrated in the examples in the color figures (inserts) in the chapters. The advantage of this approach is that you can see the changes and steps as the examples progress. The problem is that there is not enough room in the illustration to fully explain the techniques involved. Sometimes the author assumed that you had the prior knowledge required. There were a few important techniques that I had to go through it a few times before I got it.
The other shortcoming is that most of the pictures used in the important illustrations were not included in the CD. So, I was not able to practice the technique as illustrated.
I love the "Shortcut" chapter, which gave me all the keyboard shortcut keys to all the functions. This is a must when you do some heavy duty editing.
I think any author of Photoshop books should concentrate in the version of Photoshop the book is about. There is no need to go back and forth of any prior version because anyone who purchase a book like this is probably a new learner without any knowledge of prior version.
The CD has great video that outlines some very important techniques. I found it very helpful.
All in all, I rate this book a 8.5 out of 10, which is much better than most of the ones I've seen.

The gift that keep on giving!.......2003-01-04
So far it's three days out of date but there are still 362 left to go. Rush out and buy this because it is much better than a topless calendar or complimentary calendar from a construction company (a fave with my grandparents would you believe).
Each day has a true of false question or multiple choice answers along with a picture. The whole thing is bright and colorful and it makes for at least 1 fun thiny every morning. I got this for Xmas from my friend and it's the gift that lasts all year round. Seeing as how it is the 3rd of January already I'm guessing most stores will be selling these cheap so go out and get one right now.
