What do architectural design and food have in common? According to internationally acclaimed architect John Pawson and celebrated food writer Annie Bell, both are best when pared down to their essentials. Their goal in Living and Eating is to enrich the experience of living by getting rid of everything that is unnecessary and distracting, leaving us with the elements that truly matter. They seek to enhance the time we spend in the kitchen and at the table without expending extra time or effort.

The recipes are stunning--surely impressive enough to wow guests--but all are exceedingly simple to prepare. In Red Wine Risotto, wine cloaks the rice with a lustrous deep crimson emulsion and creates a delectably silky texture. Only butter, a chopped onion, chicken stock, and a little Parmesan are needed to complete the dish. Roast Monkfish is smeared with an anchovy-rosemary-lemon-butter and wrapped with prosciutto. As it bakes, a deliciously buttery sauce is formed, perfect for mopping up with chunks of crusty bread.

Pawson and Bell include no fewer than nine recipes for roast chicken--from homey Chicken Roasted with Garlic to the more exotic Roast Guinea Hen with Pistachio and Lemon Crumbs. Desserts are likewise familiar, while at the same time elegant enough to serve to guests. Baked Couscous Pudding with Raisins offers a clever twist on rice pudding--and it's equally rich and satisfying. Pan-Poached Nectarines in Spiced Wine Syrup are exotically scented with lemongrass and cardamom pods.

With its spare page design and stunning photographs of Pawson's extraordinary home, Living and Eating will surely strike a chord with anyone looking for a simpler way to live, eat, and entertain. --Robin Donovan

Book Description

As one of the world’s foremost proponents of minimalism, British architect John Pawson has spent his life trying to distill the world into its essentials. In his first cookbook, Pawson brings this philosophy of simplicity to the kitchen.

In Living & Eating, using methods similar to those he brings to structural design, John Pawson creates simple menus that underscore the unique character of each ingredient. Beginning with a sound foundation, Pawson advises us on the cornerstones of quality in food. In the recipes that follow, he emphasizes the strengths of particular ingredients. The simple poached egg, for example, relies on nothing more than fresh eggs, boiling water, and a splash of vinegar to attain its perfect degree of richness. A more complex dish, such as Lemon Risotto, blends the robust flavors of citrus zest, aged cheeses, and savory broth into a creamy mixture in which each element is maximized.

The color photographs that illustrate the book were taken in Pawson’s elegantly spare London townhouse and demonstrate perfectly his vision of uncluttered luxury. Separated into two main parts, Living & Eating covers both cooking and home design.

5 out of 5 stars My Favourite Cookery Book.......2004-09-09

I've got hundreds of cookery books. This is my favourite cookery book for several reasons. The recipes are fail-proof and the results are restaurant quality every time. The recipes appeal to me and make me want to try them (there are only a handful of things remaining that I've not tried to make yet). The book is as much about lifestyle and style as much as cookery - its refreshing to look at and inspiring to read. My favourite recipes from the book are often the most simple and frequently cook them - midnight spaghetti, vichyssoise & salmon, venetian peas & rice, tomato & basil lasagne, the best shepherds pie you could ever make and a nifty way to cook perfect, tender steaks.

5 out of 5 stars Recipies that work - everytime.......2002-07-16

Being an amateur cook is not always easy. But this book starts out setting the stage with cookware etc. It then explains in an effortless way how to cook some of the best dishes I have ever prepared. The stuff works every time and it always looks good. Currently this is my one stop book for all my dinner parties, and I have a large collection of cookbooks! Well worth the money and a beautiful book to read as well.

      Book Description

Since time immemorial, cooking and building have been among humanity’s most basic occupations. Both of them are rooted in necessity, but both of them also possess a cultural as well as a sensory, aesthetic dimension. And while it is true that cooking is a transitory art form, it gives expression to the periods of human cultural history just as architecture does. Moreover, both arts accord a central role to the materials employed. Both involve measuring and proportioning, shaping and designing, assembling and composing.

This book pursues the astonishing parallels and deeply rooted connections between the art of building and that of cooking. A variety of essays takes up questions of materiality and proportioning. Attention will also be given to food cultivation and architecture, to the places where meals are prepared as well as a range of different culinary spaces. With articles by Annette Gigon, Stanislaus von Moos, Claudio Silvestrin, Ian Ritchie, and others.

      Book Description

The contributors to this highly original collection of essays explore the relationship between food and architecture, asking what can be learned by examining the (often metaphorical) intersection of the preparation of meals and the production of space. In a culture that includes the Food Channel and the knife-juggling chefs of Benihana, food has become not only an obsession but an alternative art form. The nineteen essays and "Gallery of Recipes" in Eating Architecture seize this moment to investigate how art and architecture engage issues of identity, ideology, conviviality, memory, and loss that cookery evokes. This is a book for all those who opt for the "combination platter" of cultural inquiry as well as for the readers of M. F. K. Fisher and Ruth Reichl.

The essays are organized into four sections that lead the reader from the landscape to the kitchen, the table, and finally the mouth. The essays in "Place Settings" examine the relationships between food and location that arise in culinary colonialism and the global economy of tourism. "Philosophy in the Kitchen" traces the routines that create a site for aesthetic experimentation, including an examination of gingerbread houses as art, food, and architectural space. The essays in "Table Rules" consider the spatial and performative aspects of eating and the ways in which shared meals are among the most perishable and preserved cultural artifacts. Finally, "Embodied Taste" considers the sensual apprehension of food and what it means to consume a work of art. The "Gallery of Recipes" contains images by contemporary architects on the subject of eating architecture.

1 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Book, Marred by Poor Typeface.......2005-02-08

Although what a book says is perhaps the most pressing sphere in which to evaluate it, the way those words are presented can sometimes, sadly, eclipse the content.

This is one of those unfortunate books, cast asunder before it was even fully born. The crime: body text in sans-serif! And not only that, but on glossy pages. I could almost handle the typeface, but it does, truly, give me a headache. Add in the somewhat patchy editing and it makes for a lot of frustration.

A fascinating book with fascinating content. If only I could read it for more than a few minutes at a time. If, like me, you are one of those who refuses to purchase books printed in horrible, difficult-to-read fonts: this is one of them.

      5 out of 5 stars Delicious!.......2004-07-10

Editors Horwitz and Singley have assembled a delectable recipe of essays that graze on an admixture of architecture and food. Highly recommended.

        Book Description

An updated edition of the best-selling guide to London's flourishing restaurant scene. There are restaurants in London today that will satisfy everyone from gourmets to gluttons, every palate from Arkansas to Afghanistan, every mood from canteen to cantina. This book illuminates the various ways in which we are eating out now by focusing on a key factor in the success or failure or any restaurant - its design. Grouping the 66 restaurants and bars covered thematically, the guide analyses the way design contributes to the experience of eating and drinking with an informed and skeptical eye. Among the new restaurants covered in this edition are the Coq d'Argent, Terence Conran's latest outlet on the top of James Stirling's posthumous po-mo masterpiece in the City; PukkaBar, a curry hall in the form of a tea-planter's hut in a former bleak 1960s suburban post office; and the Great Eastern Dining Room, an eating experience for readers of wallpaper* - fleeces obligatory.

        Book Description

Five Dutch architects decided, after an exploratory trip to Brazil, that there is only one way to understand that country: "Eat Brazil up. Consume its landscape. Devour its cities. Make a ceremony of it. Slice the masses into sacral pieces and invent ritual sequences. Learn, as the Brazilians have learned, to digest this country as it is sweet and promiscuous, crude and unapproachable, enormous and endless." The full pages of glossy photographs are themselves full of colour and vibrant life. Each page features a column of text to help you experience how the architects felt as they walked the streets of Rio, Belo Horizonte, Braslia, and Sao Paulo.

This is a book for those who don't take life so seriously!!!With lots sense of humor, the authors try to explain the brazilian way of life. And the best definition is: don't try to understand us, enjoy life with us!!! I laughed with their points of view of Brazil. Enjoy you too!!!

        1 out of 5 stars Terrible!.......2001-12-28

This is one of the worst books about Brazil I've ever seen! Prejudiced points of view, mistaken informations... The graphic quality is very low, the pictures are ugly and the design is terrible, confusing. A reader can have a wrong impression of our country. And besides, it's impossible to comprehend any city in the world spending such a little time.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, you can compute using tinkertoys!.......2000-06-30

The master machinator is at it again, explaining computer science in ways that are offbeat, understandable and exciting. Yes, it is true that a functional computer was built by students at M. I. T. using Tinkertoys, and it played a mean game of tic-tac-toe. While fun to think about and look at, this idea contains much that is deeply significant. As those exposed to Turing Machines know, located in chapter six of this book and found in Dewdney's other works, computer computations are built using very simple base models. There is no theoretical distinction between the actions of a Tinkertoy computer and the fastest supercomputer. The ultimate capabilities of computers, if such things really exist, are not a function of the complexity of the base operations.
Which leads to the discussion of a heated debate taking place in and around the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community. Arguers against the notion of true machine intelligence use the underlying simplicity of computer computations to refute the idea that machines can ever develop self-awareness. Which is now becoming the irrefutable proof of true AI, supplanting the Turing test. Dewdney handles this philosophical discussion very well, posing his own questions. Such as, will we ever truly know what thinking really is?
Chaotic music, neural networks, programming Star Trek and golf games; computers that "passed" the Turing test and computer sculptures are just some of the additional material covered. The number of ways Dewdney finds to further explain computer science is nothing short of amazing.
Another in a growing list of superb primers in computer science by this author, one can only hope that they keep coming. Each essay is a jewel to be treasured and pondered.

The world just got a little more dangerous.

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce a second book of deadly machinations that DMs can use to pulp, pulverize, and puree their player characters. In the tradition of the original Traps & Treachery, this book will include hundreds of new poisons, mechanical traps, magical traps, and mind-bending dungeon puzzles. The book will be generously illustrated by more of the clever mechanical illustrations that graced the first Traps & Treachery book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Everything I want out of a d20 book........2006-03-13

This book is the best d20 supplement I've read in a long time. Finally, a book that isn't bloated with new Core Classes, Prestige Classes and Feats. This book is filled with 100+ innovative, deadly traps that will challenge any party of PC's. The chapter on poisons adds new depth to the Assassin's arsenal. I especially liked the last chapter on puzzles. There are a lot of good ideas there. I just wish that section was a little longer. All in all, an excellent book that offers up plenty of new material for the devious DM.

                    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2003-03-16

I have read this book and am wishing i had the time to use all the traps in it. They are all wonderfully made and would provide hours of torture to PCs. Only four stars because this book goes so into detail, that every time you explain a room, players will bug you about one small thing and become quite paranoid, which slows the game just a little. Other than that, this is the best source of traps that i have ever seen and every DM should have a copy, just don't let the players get their hands on it.

                    4 out of 5 stars Curious Book.......2001-01-06

This book is ideal for anyone who likes to tinker with computers and/or is into programming, electroincs, math, or physics. It is a composition of mental explorations which range from building a computer out of tinkertoys to chaos theory, computer-generated music, and fractal geometry. Most chapters are easy reads, but a couple get a little dry. Overall it was a very enjoyable, thought-provoking book.

Alex and Milly and their exotic angel weapons are eventually able to defeat these forces and the Angel Network creates an anti-virus to undo some of the damage. The Angel realm can now rest for a little while until they will be called on again to fight the forces of evil in the human world.

                    4 out of 5 stars Allbooks Review.......2006-02-06

"The gargoyles and other creatures of the night lifted up their ears and looked at each other in expectation. It was obvious that some delicious mischief was about to begin."

Mischief is indeed unleashed when the evil Tiboltious and his witch-doctor collaborator Emambo launch their dream of world domination. The plan relies on demons disguised as ordinary students in British schools, and the Angel Network calls on teenage angels Alex and Milly to uncover the dastardly duo's scheme. Alex has very human concerns - waistline worries and crushes on good-looking guys - but when she learns of the terrifying destructive force of an innocent-looking green pill, she realizes that she'll need all her angelic powers to fulfill her mission.

The African component, involving ingredients such as a bewitched baboon's tail and the still-beating heart of a lion, adds interest to this fast-moving story, while angelic mobile phones provide a fun technological touch.

This is the first novel from Julia North, a teacher in England who previously lived and taught in South Africa. Her familiarity with modern schools and her portrayal of the friendship between Alex and Milly grounds the story in a realism that makes the supernatural threat posed by Tiboltious, Emambo, and their demon assistants all the more menacing. This book is recommended to those who like tales of intrigue spiced with an otherworldly element.

                    5 out of 5 stars a fantastic new book.......2005-12-26

I really enjoyed this book. It was nice to have something different which was still full of mystery and magic. I loved the characters of Alex and Milly and felt that the things they went through at school were very real. The characters of Emambo and Tiboltious were also really scary and I found the African stuff fascinating. I couldn't put this down and hope there will be a sequel.

                              Book Description

A collection of classic comic strips from a master of American comics and art.

Out of print for a decade, this new edition (with newly designed covers) of The Comic Strip Art of Lyonel Feininger features one of the ten cartooning greats featured in the historic "Masters of American Comics" show produced by the Los Angeles Hammer Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art and currently traveling across the country. It is the only complete collection of the legendary comic strips of one of the medium's all-time greatest artists. Known worldwide for his accomplishments as a painter, Feininger began his career as a cartoonist, producing—all too briefly—two beautifully ambitious comic strips for the Chicago Sunday Tribune in 1906: The Kin-Der-Kids and Wee Willie Winkie's World, both of which remain high points in the history of strip cartooning. The Kin-Der-Kids is a rollicking comic opera of the ludicrous exploits of a group of young adventurers as they set off around the world in their bathtub with the oppressive Auntie Jim-Jam in hot pursuit. Wee Willie Winkie's World is a Little Nemo-esque visual tour-de-force of a little boy's charming fantasy world. Long considered an equal of Winsor McCay and George Herriman, Feininger's place in strip history is cemented with this beautiful, full-color, oversized collection, edited and featuring an introduction by historian Bill Blackbeard (Krazy & Ignatz).

5 out of 5 stars A magical world in comics.......2000-05-15

This is a charming collection of early 20th century comics by Lionel Feininger. His colorful drawings are enrapturing: he has a great sense of design and ability to create characters. The Kinder Kids escape their elders and embark on fantastical adventures, Wee Willie Winkie sees the world through the imaginitive eyes of a child. These comics are very funny and magical.
