Book Description

Little Boy examines the culture of postwar Japan through its arts and popular visual media. Focusing on the youth-driven phenomenon of otaku (roughly translated as “geek culture” or “pop cult fanaticism”), Takashi Murakami and a notable group of contributors explore the complex historical influences that shape Japanese contemporary art and its distinct graphic languages. The book’s title, Little Boy, is a reference to the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, thus clearly locating the birth of these new cultural forms in the trauma and generational aftershock of the atomic bomb.

This generously illustrated book showcases the work of key otaku artists and designers, many of whom are cult celebrities in Japan, and discusses their feature film and video animations, video games and internet sites, music, toys, fashion, and more. In the process, the following questions are posed: What is otaku, and what does it tell us about contemporary social, economic, and cultural life in Japan and throughout the world? How is it related to the pervasive and curious fixation on “cuteness” evident in Japanese popular culture? What impact did the atomic devastation of World War II have on the development of Japanese art and culture?

This brilliantly designed, bilingual (English and Japanese) publication examines these themes to explore how contemporary Japanese art has become inseparable from the subcultural realms of manga and animé (Japanese animation)—a world where meticulous technique, apocalyptic imagery, and high and low cultures meet.

Little Boy concludes Murakami’s “Superflat” trilogy, a project conceived in 2000 to introduce a new wave of Japanese artists and to place their work in the historical context of traditional styles and concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Big Bang, Little Boy, Art Explosion.......2005-07-28

Here's an email I sent to a friend about the Little Boy exhibition and this book:

I spent Friday afternoon at the Japan Society viewing the Little Boy exhibition, curated by Takashi Murakami - and I purchased the handsome exhibit catalogue, Little Boy: The Arts of Japan's Exploding Subculture (edited by Murakami, with commentary and essays in English and Japanese).

The exhibition title, of course, is the name of the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima and that event is a recurrent theme and background for the exhibit. But it also points toward the apparent childlike drift of Japanese pop culture as evidenced by the kawaii craze. Murakami has two essays in the catalogue, the first of which is "Earth in my Window" (pp. 98-149). The essay has an image from "Howl's Moving Castle" as its frontispiece, opens by talking of the historic Little Boy, moves through the assertion that "everyone who lives in Japan knows-something is wrong" and quickly arrives at "Kawaii (cute) culture has become a living entity that pervades everything. With a population heedless of the cost of embracing immaturity, the nation is in the throes of a dilemma: a preoccupation with anti-aging may conquer not only the human heart, but also the body. It is a utopian society as fully regulated as the science-fiction world George Orwell envisioned in 1984: comfortable, happy, fashionable-a world nearly devoid of discriminatory impulses" (p. 100). I've not read the essay in full.

The exhibition was quite interesting, steeped in manga and anime. One wall was covered in original hand-drawn Doraemon panels, another wall of Hello Kitty art and merchandise, Mobile Suit Gundam was well represented, while a bench of foot-high Godzilla sculptures was placed in front of a black well on which the 9th article of the Japanese constitution was written, in English and Japanese. That's the article in which Japan renounces the right to wage war. And lots more, more than I can even mention, much less comment on, in this brief note.

The overall effect - of both the exhibition and the catalog - is that of manga and anime themselves. We have worlds colliding and intersecting, intermingling and cross-breeding. Who knows what it will toss up, hopeful monsters and all.

I was most taken by the (acrylic) paintings of Aya Takano. Midori Matsui remarks of her art (p. 232):

"The interpenetration of the future and the past, the outer and inner space is captured dreamily in Takano's paintings, in habited by supple, nude teenagers and half-human creatures drawn with tentative lines and painted in a vapory spread of acrylic. Her retro-futuristic vision is inspired by the science-fiction novels of Brian B. Aldis, Cordweiner Smith, James Tiptree, Jr. and the comics of Osamu Tezuka, the father of postwar Japanese narrative manga. The mixture of hippie hallucination and space-age fantasy gives Takano's erotic nudes a mythical flavor. Coyly taunting the "Lolita complex" of an otaku erotic comic, she conveys a different sort of eroticism derived from the androgyny of the adolescent body."

Yes. Her work is very delicate, but substantial. Moderately painterly as well. You can see the brush strokes, but the paint is thin and Matsui's phrase "vapory spread" is apt. The heads are rounded, as are the large eyes. The eyes are also heavily lined, as though these wiry and delicate creatures are made up with kohl around their eyes. The images are haunting.

If I were a collector, I would collect Takano. But I would have to hang those paintings in a gallery. I wouldn't want them in a living room, a library, a hallway, nor a bedroom. The images are too intrusive to be background. They demand your attention; they are jealous.

I saw lots of images like that in this exhibition. I wish I could see it again.

5 out of 5 stars Little Boy: a book of exceptional beauty and social importance.......2005-07-20

"Little Boy: The Arts of Japan's Exploding Subculture" is far and away the most beautifully-designed and edgiest book ever issued by the Japan Society in New York. At the same time, it is the most significant. That the bilingual "Little Boy" catalogue is so stunningly beautiful and up-to-the minute reflects the fact that it was edited and produced in Japan by the graphics artists driving the trends it documents. The art it examines is, as Alexandra Monroe of the Japan Society puts it, a superflat "cartoon imagery of exploding mushroom clouds, fantastic mutant monsters, and baby-faced cyborg heroines." This art bears some resemblance to that of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, but even the art of these two icons cannot begin to hint at the revolution in graphic design that has occurred in Japan. Nor can their art prepare us for the revolution of meaning that this graphic art has assumed for the Japanese of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

And it is this last point that brings us to the seminal importance of "Little Boy" as both a book and exhibition.
To return to Munroe's essay, with which readers may prefer to begin the book, in countries other than Japan animated films, cartoon-like graphics, and comic books are typically associated with children alone. In Japan, in contrast, these art forms have been appropriated by adults as well as the art mainstream. Of greatest importance, they have become a major means by which the Japanese are attempting to deal with the dual traumas of the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the postwar dependency that a US-written constitution imposed on Japan as a player on the world stage. If such traumas were being reflected in the graphic arts alone, this phenomenon would be perhaps no more than an interesting oddity. Nearly everyday, however, attempts to grapple with the same issues are being played out on the political stage, be it in the context of a prime ministerial visit to the Yasukuni Shrine for the war dead or Japan's agonizing over how to respond to the apparent nuclearization of the Korean peninsula. It is tempting to ascribe these political developments to a renascent right-wing fringe. "Little Boy" is, however, a wake-up call telling us that the population as a whole is wrestling with issues of how their nation should be defined.

I attended the show in New york and wished to have a catalog. They were all sold out but reccomended that I go to amazon. I was quite pleased. Very visual and informative. Be for warned not a product for children. It is true to form of Japense culutre in animation and graphics. If you have a chance I highly reccomend you go to the exhibit.

5 out of 5 stars The Sociological Aspects of Commercial Imagery..........2005-04-30

Murakami's latest curatorial effort has gained nearly universal acclaim amongst the art world. His "Little Boy" exhibition attempts to understand the origins of contemporary Japanese art's affinity for both the horrifically violent and the frightfully cute (kawaii). Ultimately, Murakami argues that these images are spawned from the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined with postwar US domination. Violent imagery becomes a sign for a fascination with the kind of power that postwar Japan lacked. Kawaii imagery is then seen as stemming from Japan's status as a protectorate of the US. This relationship was not unlike that of a parent and child (the child/adolecent becomes a prevalent theme in Japanese art from postwar era forward.)
This effort is faithfully documented in this beautiful catalogue which includes works by contemporary Japanese artists, artists of Murakami's Kaikai Kiki, and popular anime and manga such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Doraemon. A must for anyone interested in the origin of Japan's unique hyper-contemporary aesthetic.

1 out of 5 stars Last gasp for Murakami.......2005-04-30

Murakostabi (Murakami + Mark Kostabi) This grating exhibition and premise mines the discards of Japanese art history (Okamoto) and gloms on to the earlier actual historical greats. At the hilarious symposium Murakami was reduced to being called Little boy himself! it was hilarious to watch and hear. Finally he is moving out and away from the artworld like Peter Max and yesterday's news. The exhibition is calculating (the use of mushrooms- halucinogens- and Mushroom clouds, Article 9 - predictable) The big black mushroom cloud painting was really conceived by one of his under-paid assistants Mariko Suzuki and he tries to take credit. It is a cloying show with very little merit. Seeing Superflat in Tokyo and being suspicious of it then this new incarnation of it reeks of the same stunts that troubled sitcoms use. It is begging for substance. The works of Makoto Aida or Tenmyouya hisashi or even the toys and magazines by dehara have much more substance. Think I am pissed? well search these out and you might be surprised at the rich depth of REAL JAPANESE ART, not thie silly misinformation of murakostabi.

There's a famous photograph of Picasso in his 70s that probably would make you think "genius" and "visionary" even if you had no idea he was a great artist. One hand pushes up against his forehead, carving a few extra wrinkles and hooding one eye; the other eye stares out with implacable intensity. This is the work of Arnold Newman, one of the great contemporary American portrait photographers, whose images--frequently made on assignment in Europe--appeared in Harper's Bazaar, Fortune, Life, Look, and other major magazines. Trained as a painter, he believes (as he writes in a short, passionate essay prefacing his selection of 60 years of his work) that "we do not take pictures with our cameras, but with our hearts and minds." He has always been fascinated by the kind of people--scientists, musicians, actors, politicians, writers, and artists--with whom he could have "long conversations until late at night."

Arnold Newman, probably the most extensive of the many samplings of the photographer's work, amply displays his vaunted skill at portraying mostly well-known sitters in their native habitats, whether these happen to be lonely-looking palaces (Haile Selassie, Generalissimo Franco), book-lined offices (Golda Meier, Stephen Jay Gould), a shabby road veiled in darkness (Shelagh Delaney), a bed (Woody Allen, scribbling on a legal pad), or mysterious precincts that capture the willful individuality of artists and architects. With 240 black-and-white and color plates, this beautifully produced book (marred only by the awkward way the elegant black silhouette of a grand piano lid in the Igor Stravinsky portrait bleeds across two pages) accompanies an exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. (March 18-May 21, 2000). --Cathy Curtis

      Book Description

Arnold Newman is a master of the environmental portrait, the portrait that takes its subject's surroundings as a crucial, integral element to the portrayal of the person himself. ("Himself" for there are only two portraits of women in this wonderful collection--Marilyn Monroe and Georgia O'Keefe.) His career began in 1941 but took off in 1946, when he moved to New York and received his first commission from Life magazine--a portrait of Eugene O'Neill in his library--and then from Harper's Bazaar--the portrait of Igor Stravinsky, all piano with the musician in the corner of the frame. Since then he has constructed an immaculate, cosmopolitan oeuvre that has captured the essential of its subject better than most others, from Piet Mondrian and his rigid easel to Max Ernst in a cloud of smoke and Surrealist objects, from Marcel Duchamp with a ready-made backdrop to Leonard Bernstein in an empty concert hall, from Woody Allen scribbling notes to Joan Mir* smiling like Puck. And here they all are, a wonderful cast of artist, poets, scientists, and other characters, alongside an interview with the photographer and a thoughtful essay on his work.

Arnold Newman died recently at age 88 but his photographic work will live one. Newman was known for his environmental portraiture - capturing the famous faces of his time in the atmosphere in which they created their magic and lived their lives, sometimes private, but most times public.

In this superb collection of Newman's work there are the famous photographs of Igor Stravinsky at his piano, Marilyn Monroe ('she was terrified of aging'), Carl Sandburg, Mickey Mantle, Truman Capote, Pablo Picasso, Frank Lloyd Wright, Sir Cecil Beaton, Diana Vreeland and many more. Each subject is part of a personality scape, accompanied with the trappings that made them famous.

Arnold Newman felt that a subject's environment illuminated the subject, and while many other photographers have followed his lead, Newman remained at the top of his genre. This book is an excellent tribute (though not published as such!) to an artist departed whose legacy will linger. Recommended. Grady Harp, June 06

5 out of 5 stars Almost as good as being there.......2000-05-20

I just got back from the Newman exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. and although I thought I had seen most of his work, I was stunned by the boldness of some of the photo collage work and color work which I had previously only seen in B&W. The book has all of the show and many more. It was $40 there and they were selling like hotcakes. The book is beautiful and has $1 million worth of images in it. Hard to pick a favorite. Certainly Picasso and maybe Isaac Asimov too.

5 out of 5 stars Simply AMAZING photographs.......2000-05-18

I'm an amateur photographer, so when I heard an interview with Arnold Newman on NPR's Morning Edition, I knew I had to get this book. Newman is considered the inventor of "environmental portraits," in which the photographer uses surroundings to capture essential elements of his or her subject.

The photos collected in this volume span Newman's entire career and range from Senator John F. Kennedy to President Bill Clinton. The collection is mostly black-and-white. Leafing through the book, I've gotten many ideas for my own photography, but I've also gained a new appreciation for many of the historical figures Newman captured in his work.

The book is large and heavy, very satisfying to hold and look through, and will make an excellent coffee table book. Whether you're into history or photography, you'll really enjoy this book.

This is a very well done book of Scottish fiddle tunes. There are many classics in this book, plus some gems that you may have trouble finding anywhere else, like "Belfast Hornpipe."

The only disconcerting thing the American musician may have with it at first is that the chord symbols (actually the letter names of the chords) are printed below the line of music rather than above it, as is more common in the States.

Over here, we have been spoiled a bit by low priced collections, such as the reprints issued by Dover, so the price may look a little steep. It isn't, though. Remember, this book has come all the way from the Isle of Skye, and it costs these people more to print a book like this.

The printing is excellent, everything is easily readable, and the arrangements will work well on the mandolin, too.

Vampire Doll is a Manga centering around a vampire, Guilt-na-Zan who was sealed into a cross 100 years ago by a very powerful exorcist. Now 100 years later, a descendant of the exorcist (Kyoji) has released the spirit of Guilt-na-Zan into the body of a wax doll created to look like his sister. Since it is modern times, the need for an exorcist has been drastically reduced so Kyoji has plenty of hobbies and has "employed" Guilt-na (his name when he is in "doll form") to be the family servant or else he'll be placed back in the cross from which he was released.

Now, Guilt-na-Zan has to put up with the doll form and the magical girlie powers that he has while in this form (instead of his normal dark black magic). However, not all is well, as Kyoichi (also known as Night Veil and Kyoji's older brother) repeatedly attempts to steal the cross that he believes to hold the Spirit of Guilt-na-Zan to use him to do his bidding. Kyoji uses Guilt-na to foil his brother's crazy schemes by allowing him to drink 1CC of blood from his sister Tonae, the blood of Tonae allows Guilt-na to transform into his "normal" self Guilt-na-Zan.

There are several little adventures in this one little book, all pretty much following along the same lines of foiling Night Veil's very stupid schemes.

This manga is almost bursting with all the comedy held inside of it, there's always something happening to make you laugh, there's a fair share of battles featuring Guilt-na/Guilt-na-Zan, and even some crazy villians in this story, including one who sucks the wickedness from people turning a school into a veritable love fest.

If you love vampires and you love lots of comedy and crazy situations, then you will definetly love this manga.

                5 out of 5 stars Vampires Rock.......2007-01-19

Awesome book. Great storyline. If you like the unreal this the book to read.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any manga readers........2007-01-18

I suddenly got on a Vampire kick and wanted some new manga all in one thought...so I shot over to the manga department of Borders, and ran straight to the V titles. At first, I skipped right over this series, it was so short! But, when the other Vampire mangas failed to grab my attention, I pulled this book off the shelf.
The cover art was amazing, so I flipped it over and read the paltry summary on the back. I decided to buy it, and grabbed the 2nd book while I was at it.
I was hooked as soon as I started reading. The atrwork is beautiful and the dialogue. The dialogue is amazingly funny. Great jokes, unforgettable characters and a plot with fun twists and turns, but not enough to confuse you or get you angry about it. Its one of those mangas you will rant about for a week and re-read a thousand times.
I'm an addict now. Personally, I can't wait for Vampire Doll merchandise and the like. Give it a try. There is something in it for everyone. Its not a traditional dark-emo-goth story. Its got humor, light-heartedness and a slough of characters who buzz in your head all day. You'll remember the snappy lines...and repeat them to friends. I loved it instantly, and I know you will, too.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for anyone who likes comedy!.......2006-10-10

As much as I'm not a goth, not interested in vampires, could care less about dolfies, and ignore bishounen, I have to say Vampire Doll quickly became my most recommended manga on my comedy list. No emo-angst here -- Vampire Doll asks the simple premise: What if you were a modern-day Exorcist who'd rather design dollfies than clean the house (or take over the world)? That's right, resurrect a Vampire Count Lord to be the maid and put him into a really cute *girl* wax doll! (And give him appropriate magical powers, like summoning teddy bears, and conjuring sweets and cake. Yay! Cake!) Vampire Doll also has a strong cast of supporting characters. My own favorite is the Exorcist's black sheep brother who stole the family artifacts -- and found out, the hard way, that they were *all* cursed. Probably the only challenge to this manga is how it will maintain the crazy momentum of the opening pages. Shoujo and goth readers will love the art and bishonen. Everyone will love the comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Goth type manga!.......2006-09-06

I was attracted to this title by the cover first of all. When I read the back I knew it looked good. I must say as far has darker type manga art goes this book hit the mark! The art is wonderful and enjoyable to look at. The storyline is also enjoyable and interesting.
The plot is that a aristocratic vampire was sealed away into a cross by a exorsist. 100 years later that exorsist's great great grandson releases the vampires spirit into a doll. A human sized wax girl doll. Not only can the Vampire not do magic anymore but he must work for the exorsist who released him!
This book is funny funny funny with good drawings. I label it a must have!!!

5 out of 5 stars 50 Rules Just for Me.......2006-06-08

When I read this book I was just looking for something to help me get ideas for a comic I was working on. In the end I found another one of many of the books that I've come to love.

The story is basically about twins who turn out to be total opposites. The sister is responsible, doing well in school, and takes care of everyone in the house, including her father. Her brother is the total opposite. He sits around the house all day playing with the cat, oesn't really care how he does in school, and basically forces people to take care fo him. When he is forced to do any work he doesn't do much, such as when he has to babysit his little brother. He complains that he wants food and his brother ends up giving him cat food.

The story doesn't have much of a plot apart from the fact that is a life we all face. Falling in love, making friends, and trying to keep everything in tune, just basic life.

In the story you meet many interesting characters life the twins' older sister who is a comic artist, their younger brother who wants nothing more then be cute, and the twin brother's usually dark, but charming, cute friend who might have a thing for his best friend's sister.

Even though it basically has no plot the story is wonderful and something you will enjoy again and again.

                5 out of 5 stars A good book.......2006-05-02

I just finished this book, and I enjoyed just about every page. I'm more one for comedies, but although this one wasn't really funny in any way, it's still a good read. Unlike most manga, this one is actually the kind in which things happen that would happen in real life. All the time you're reading it, you almost feel like you're part of the story. That's how I felt anyways.

4 out of 5 stars Revolts around TEENS as usual. .......2006-02-22

Manga may be big in Japan, but it seems to be for and all about TEENS, TEENS, TEENS.:P Even though this one takes place in Korea!

Read all about those amazing creatures called "teens"! They are all svelte, beautiful, and of course, white. We are all so fascinated by those wealthy white-bread young things who are more doe-eyed than slant-eyed, like true Asians are. And like ALL manga characters, they resemble supermodels and pop idols who live in big, magnificent houses - a dwelling so typical of most manga teens. No wonder Britney Spears and Paris Hilton have totally taken over the world!

Oh, and let's also share Japan's great interest in those mysterious, mystic places where TEENS go to, called "high school". Wow! Cool! At least those teen characters featured here don't have any magical or superpowers, though they do come in a "pair", like Luke and Leia. How original.

At least one of the girls looks like an overaged adult - the kind we really don't see much in manga anyway - that's exactly what happens to our gorgeous elf-like beings called "teens" once they pass a certain age. They become invisible housewives and salarymen!XP

Oh, and you have to be a TEEN to read that kind of stuff, too!

                3 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised.......2005-06-10

If you're looking for a light-hearted manga book, 50 Rules is perfect! It's not very deep or meaningful and there isn't much of a plot, but it's very entertaining. It's the sort of manga you can read more than once!

                5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it!.......2004-11-19

This is a great book. I recomend people to buy it. It is funny! I can't wait til the 2nd one comes out!
