Customer Reviews:
Pity the drawings are weak. .......2006-03-30
Graves goes on about scaring the student with such phrases as "plunging immediatley into frantic production of your own thing." The entire book is a number tricks. I don't object to "tricks" if the ends result in a good drawing. The first rule of art is ; there no rules. I agree with many of Graves' didactic, time tested academic step by step progress. However what I see here is not unlike many of the popular TV how to draw/paint....Like ME. In fact Graves' drawings are rather poor. His concepts about tone and form are sound. My fear is that is that want of the student to advance in there truest of artforms; the charcoal drawing. It is the purest of all medium. The art of drawing is the most important vehicle to which the artist can move on to painting, printmaking etc.; not that that is even important. A good drawing can stand alone and equal to any painting. If you really wish to draw well I would suggest "The Natural way to Draw" which is also very exercize driven and only people who truly want to draw well will follow this regimine. Nicholides does not present his own work as an example of how to draw; but rather chooses to present and challenge the student to work and work hard. I believe this a better way in which to convey the principles of draughtsmanship.
THE TWO WAYS.......2004-12-26
I am a painter/illustrator and a professor of art and I knew Douglas when I was a student at The American Academy for 4 years, and later at Leo Burnett, he was a fine gentleman and a superior artist. I own a copy of Douglas Graves book and several others of his and treasure them along with Vandepool's book and George Bridgman's. In Doug's book, there is a consistent and exhaustively comprehensive approach to drawing and rendering the figure concentrating on drafting and rendering in tone with strong light and shade and shadow. The drawings are excellent. I would recommend it without reserve for anyone wishing to become a painter or an illustrator-I would also recommend several years of figure and anatomy study at a good art school. I consult all three books and many others in my own painting and illustrating, and teaching regularly. Doug's method is similar to that of the artists/Teachers, Mosby, and Vandenbrock, and theirs is one very good way to approach rendering the human figure and especially good training for painting in oil. You will not regret buying and using Douglas Graves book, and I would buy a copy of Bridgman as well as Vanderpool's along with it and then get thee to an art school if you want to make a living at painting and drawing.
Good but............2003-09-12
I really liked the book as others share in their review. But, I guess I really need some basics in regards to a break down. This book covers how to just get in and do the whole body, slowly laryering with charcoal. I like working in the charcoal, it is fast and easy to work with in regards to fixing mistakes. Once charcoal is in place, other mediums can be used over it if you are wanting to make your drawing into a painting. It is a good book though. The fours stars is only because I was expecting some breakdown of the figures.
Lovely!.......2003-02-23
You can learn a lot abt the human anatomy and charcoal techiques. Good buy!
Akin to "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".......2002-10-08
Having learned to draw from Betty Edwards' "right brain" approach, this book is a natural follow-on. It teaches a painterly approach to drawing by capturing the masses, rather than the contours, in much the same way as DRSB does. I've struggled with contour drawing from the beginning, whereas I see the masses and tones very easily. The drawings in this book are beautiful, and it's great confirmation and affirmation of the DRSB training I've had. See my other review for DRSB.
Book Description

Gary Greene, along with six other respected colored pencil artists, show how to make the most of colored pencil's distinctive translucent properties. In 64 glowing, step-by-step demonstrations they show how to layer, burnish and underpaint colors to create floral portraits that are truly radiant. Features advice on choosing tools and materials plus the Plethora of Flora--a colorful gallery of finished blooms.
Customer Reviews:
Great Flower Lessons.......2007-02-06
I felt the book provided good lessons and beautiful graphic design . The artist does certainly draw radiant flowers. My main objection is the variety of colored pencils and watercolor pencils needed to have on hand from various different companies.
Book of copying.......2006-11-05
The book is full of beautiful and inspirational flower drawings, I admit. I hoped to get some hints about drawing flowers generally, but the author teaches the reader to copy his(her?) drawings step-by-step, including to use the same pencils/colours. Maybe, if I was 10 years old, it would be helpful, but as an adult, I don't want to copy someone's creation. Yet, the book is not disappointment to me - it introduces a new technique of coloured pencils I never met before.
Beautiful Pictures - not enough how to.......2004-11-18
This book contains wonderful examples of colored pencil art. The pictures in this book are exquiste. As a person who is just starting exploring medium and just starting drawing, I found it lacking in the how to aspect. Each picture has a list of the colors used in it. But, it doesn't go into detailed instruction or detailed technique which is what I would have liked at this beginning stage. When I get more proficient with my technique I will go back to this book. The books displays wonderful examples of what can be done with colored pencils. The book is worth having for the beautiful pictures. If nothing else it makes a great coffee table book.
Excellent Book!!.......2001-08-11
This is a great book, it has many drawings not just by the author but by other artists. The pictures are clear and very large so you can see all the details. Every page has a drawing and tells what colors were used and how they were applyed. I think this book Is excellent but is aimed more for the serious artist.
The Right Book at The Right Time !.......1999-01-03
As a beginner with the colored pencil medium I have been working with flowers as my main subjects. With my love of the flowers, plants, and trees,I was naturally pulled towards wanting to put my hand to the drawing of flowers. A friend of mine who knew of my interest, gave me Gary Greene's wonderful book. Not only was I thrilled by seeing the works of truly accomplished colored pencil artists, but I was inspired by the instruction and care that went into the writing and illustration of this book.
It has not only become a teaching guide for me but,it has also become an inspiration to make me work harder to learn more about this wonderful, dynamic art medium. (And, I use the word work lightly, what a joy!)
Book Description
Concise and beautifully illustrated, this guide provides invaluable instruction on the art of pencil drawing. It covers the basics of holding the pencil, applying different strokes, shading, perspective, and the rendering of different materials, as well as the finer points of pictorial composition and drawing from nature. 36 evocative sketches.

Excellent Resource.......2006-08-16
This is a fine book to have in your resource and refrence section. I feel that drawing is a very important part of the artistic experience. It allows your ideas to take form without words. Although I would suggest the "New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain," as a primer for anyone learning to draw anything, if you focus on landscapes this book will help.

"Every line should have an opinon".......2007-01-31
I simply can not put into words, what this book can do for a struggling artist. This and "The Animators Survival Guide", Scott McCloud's Trilogy on comics, and a good book on anatomy, are the only books you'll ever need on drawing. The offer wisdom and guidance that no "How to draw" book ever will. These guys all have been in the artistic trenches, experienced it all, and impart to the new generation wanting to do this stuff, how to do it. I'm not even an animator, more a comic artist who doesn't draw comics, but every time I hit a block or wall, these books give me the inspiration to push beyond "Great". They give me the much needed kick in the rearend, leading from "I draw" to "I am an artist".
All you'll ever need are these books, and I would suggest that ANY artist buy this book, and the others mentioned right this minute. The Preface to this book is enough to break down many walls a beginner or intermediate artist might be behind, and when they come crashing down?
You'll draw like you never thought you could ever have.
Awesome book.......2007-01-15
This was a gift for my niece who is an artist and she absolutely loved it.
She said she couldn't wait to use the book and that it gave her so many ideas. Highly recommended.
Great Drawing book! .......2006-03-22
He shares his great knowledge how to observe figure...
Great teacher, and great art work, great person.
If you have chance to take his drawing classes, take his classes.
Two thumbs up!!.......2005-07-19
A very useful book to give more life and energy to your illustrations and animation drawings!
Brings Art to Life and Life to Art.......2005-07-18
The focus here is primarily on the use of assymetry through straight and curved lines to show the direction of force in the body. This is covered in other books, but not this extent. Other methods treat this material as secondary to contour and gesture, here it is the focus of a drawing. The book is filled with excellent ,forceful examples of using rhythm, shape, and line to bring out the life in a subject.
There is one weakness here. The author does cover many things beginners need to know, but goes over them very quickly. While a beginner could learn from this book, perhaps a little experience with the basics would be helpful before coming to this book.
The author is an animator and besides appealing to other animators, his clean style would appeal to those interested in sketching or reportage, a subject which the author devotes a whole chapter to.

Customer Reviews:
Uninspiring and rudimentary.......1998-04-25
Julian Seaman obviously has a good eye for picking fashion illustrations, but his own drawings, which are featured heavily in this book are really not very good. His commentary, is way too simple and states the (very) obvious. In fact, Mr Seaman's skills as an artist and as a writer are similarly simplistic. I would not buy this book. It is junior high school leval reading.
Book Description
8 5/8 x 7 1/2 120 color and 30 black-and-white illustrations US Distribution only photography With its focus on the built-in obstacles of lowlight photography and how to overcome them, this book shows readers ways to maintain consistently accurate exposures, work with slow shutter speeds, and achieve color accuracy with exposures that are measured in minutes. Images from many parts of the world show stunning examples of both indoor and outdoor mixed-lighting conditions. Technically complex but creatively rewarding, the art of lowlight photography is explained lucidly and simply in this problem-solving manual.

Not much help.......2005-03-20
This book was a total disappointment to me. It did not have any useful information and technical in-depth explanations. A few good photos were placed in this book to seemingly give you the impression of best seller, which I guess might give it some resale value.
I would recommend this book if you just like to look at pretty pictures and wonder how they did that.

Product Description
A memorable Southern Gothic trilogy in which a sensitive and innocent young man is continually victimized by the arbitrary cruelness and violence of brutal men. Mayport is a struggling community of hard living folks who condone the reprehensible behavior of cowards. The town folk mistake aggressiveness for strength -- and sensitivity as a sign of weakness. There is a palpable air of foreboding in these moving tales, which envelopes the reader like oppressive Florida humidity. G. W. Reynolds has a fine ear for natural dialogue and has created an authentic setting and atmosphere for this harrowing coming-of-age story.

Captivating Page Turner - Prepare for some Late Nights!.......2003-05-16
Jetty Man by G. W. Reynolds was a great book comprised of (3) segments in the life of his main character, Jason, the Jetty Man. Although the book started a bit slowly for me, it picked-up steam and blasted into (2) "very late" night reads to find out "what's going to happen next?"
Reynolds hooked me through his mix of metaphysical tension, sensual power and excellent character development.
This book, set in a very unique area near my own home, "called" me to get out and live part of it. I witnessed some of the facts behind this great fiction.
Being a local living near Mayport, I actually drove through the small town of Mayport on my lunch hour searching for the sand hill and the magical Oak. While I did not find the specific Oak on my first quest, my heart raced when I saw a high sand hill similar to the one described in the book. I saw Mr.King's house, Singleton's seafood shack and rode the Ferry to the other side of the St.Johns while looking back at the town of Mayport eyeing the tall Oaks feeling the breeze in my face...
I will read his trilogy...Mullet Run and then Oak Babies. I can't wait to see what happens with the beautiful and mysterious Oak women: Jesse, Margie and Sophia
This Hard Cover edition is a must-buy........2002-12-26
The all new "Jetty Man" in hard cover is a true work of art. Where the original printing was outstanding, this version is fabulous. Not only has it been reprinted in a hard bound edition, it has been re-edited and about 18 meticulously executed pen and ink illustrations which depict scenarios in the story have been added. The book is very impressive and absolutely huge! The soft bound copy had no illustrations. Also, filming has begun on "Jetty Man," The Movie by Don Flynn's "High Pitched Hum" production company in Jacksonville, Florida. This gives the novel an added attraction.
This story takes place in old Florida. The setting is a little, isolated fishing village called "Mayport." It was before the naval base of the same name was built. Mayport was accessible only by a long, narrow road which wound mile after mile beneath the huge Live Oak trees and Palmetto palms which stood on either side. The inhabitants of the village were simple people, some who were very, very good and some who were very, very bad. A mammoth, enchanted oak tree, perched on top of a sand hill, loomed over the village and held sway over the superstitious fishermen and their families. Hair-raising scenarios interweave with sexual fantasy, mystery and intrigue as the story progresses. G. W. Reynolds is a gifted teller of tales and this rip-roaring story will keep the reader riveted to the pages from start to finish. This is one you don't want to miss.
Jetty Girl Club - Ft. George Island, Florida.......2002-03-06
Loved the book. Could not stop until I was finished and could start on Mullet Run. I'm halfway thru Mullet Run and I have Oak Baby waiting to be read next. Living across the river from Mayport and being very familiar with the names, places and tales made it so real and NOW. I'd read as I sat on my front porch with the ferry blowing it's horn and view Mayport and feel as if I was there. Would love to sit and talk with Reynolds for hours. Thanks for the good reading Mr. Reynolds.
An exciting journey through the past........2001-03-07
"Jettyman" was a revisit to all the things I had heard growing up, the haunted tree in particular. There was one particular scene in the book where Jason and his buddy are riding in the back of Mr. Strickland's truck, holding on for dear life, it made me remember what it was like being a teenager. It reminded me of how something so simple -can be so much fun! And the illustrations were really fantastic. If you are not familiar with the small fishing village of Mayport, Florida, you will be, these are excellent drawings of the area and very informative. It felt good to remember.
Intense Action.......2001-02-09
Reynolds characters come alive with bold intensity and strong personalities. The plot is equally intense. There is never a dull moment. At times it is shocking, but it always represents life.

Book Description
1906. Volume 1 of 3. A-D. The subject of this work is the evolution or natural growth of religious beliefs throughout the world, from the lowest to the highest forms. Religion is that belief about the unknown, and that opinion as to the realities of the universe, which affects the conduct of men to one another in their daily life. These ideals are illustrated here with a fullness of knowledge, a wealth of illustration and a calmness of mind, which are probably not found combined in any other book on this subject.
