Book Description
To city planners, landscape architects, and historians, John Nolen is as important a figure in design and planning as was Frederick Law Olmsted, Jens Jensen, or Lewis Mumford. Scholars, however, have only recently begun to explore the extensive Nolen archives. Relying on rarely published materials from these archives and other sources, John Nolen and Mariemont: Building a New Town in Ohio details the planning and initial development of the community of Mariemont, outside Cincinnati. Hired by philanthropist Mary Emery, Nolen worked to transform farmland into a community of mixed-income housing complete with commercial space, playgrounds, and a village green.
This is the first book to examine the planning and building of Mariemont and one of the few books to focus on the process of American town planning in the early twentieth century. Regarded in the 1920s as an exemplar of planned communities, Mariemont remains one of America's most livable suburbs and has drawn great interest from the New Urbanism movement.

Excellent reference book, lots of great photos.......1999-11-11
This is an excellent reference book on over 90 different Japanese crafts from all areas. For each craft there is a history as well as the basics of how it is made. It is an encyclopedia rather than an instruction book.
Some types of crafts covered include ceramics, textiles, lacquer ware, bamboo craft, paper, woodcraft, metalwork, dolls, fans, lanterns, candles & items of calligraphy.
The photographs are numerous & all are in color. I loved looking at the textiles & kimonos. I also enjoyed the Kyoto ware, kutani ware, bamboo containers & decorative ink stones.
I found the extensive list of books to be invaluable in finding out how to make the crafts mentioned here. If you intend to visit Japan you will find the map of craft villages & list of craft museums, associations & centers very helpful.
Excellent source book for Japanese crafts.......1998-03-26
For afficionados of Japanese crafts, this book provides a fine selection of popular crafts from different regions of Japan. From washi to woodwork, the featured items are beautifully photographed are accompanied by useful general information. As a coffee table book, it is informative and replete with photographs. Perhaps the greatest criticism is that it is on the small side for a book of its kind. Nonetheless, the photos are quite beautiful and will be worth it especially for those who have lived in Japan or who have an interest in the array of crafts presently popular in Japan.

Book Description
Though it's only about the size of Texas, France presents an astonishing variety of landscapes to the aerial observer-each of which reveals itself in the pages of this breathtaking photographic journey. In 200 full-color photographs, Yann Arthus-Bertrand captures all the undulating curves and harmonious lines of this vibrant, verdant, sometimes rough but always generous land. Here is a France of green fields and red brick roofs, dotted with steeples and church towers, worn by the sea along its handsome coasts and rife with rolling hills. Here are the great French landmarks-the Pont du Gard, Notre Dame, Loire Valley castles, and Bordeaux vineyards, to name just a few, with accompanying text by journalist Patrick Poivre d'Arvor that makes each one come alive as if seen for the first time.
Book Description
A birds-eye view provides a new perspective on the skills of medieval engineers and builders of thses massive strongholds.

Castles From the Air is Lovely Book.......2006-02-26
If,like me,you already have scores of scholarly books on castles, and are looking for a stunning visual reference crammed with oversized, beautiful aerial photos of castles from all over the world, look no further. This is it.
Wonderful views.......2005-04-16
This is a stellar collection of aerial views of castles all over Europe and ranging as far East as Turkey. While showing no author or even photographer credits, the brief text and very short captions merely offer context for the main show--the wonderful oversize two-page spread color plates showing the great variety of castle layouts as well as some later fortifications, including some seacoast defense sites. Arranged in rough geographical order, this is a veritable aerial voyage offering views you simply can't get on your own lacking a private plane or helicopter. I've seen many of these places--but never from these angles. It is great to see a castle book that does not rely on the usual photos, let alone the usual places. There are a host of sites shown here that are new to me and make me want to head off on yet another castle trek. In all, well worth the money---a sheer delight.
Excellent Castles Book.......2005-03-08
A gorgeous collection of European castles from the air, with just a bit of identification on each rather than a description.
Long introduction on castles and history. Included several castle sites that were new to me.
Beautifully photographed, occasionally from a non-traditional vantage. (Example: Segovia is normally shown looking up at the north side, here it's shown as an aerial view from the west side)
No author is listed. I hope they'll do another volume with many more castles. The book makes one want so many more photos, especially of such splendors as Krak Des Chevaliers.

Book Description
This is a comprehensive account of the behind-the-lines operations that preceded and supported the D-Day landings and the breakout from Normandy. The French resistance played a key role in undermining German resistance during the liberation of France in 1944.They destroyed vital railways, ambushed convoys and tied down large numbers of German troops in security patrols. Many attacks were spearheaded by British and American special forces, the SAS and US 'Jedburgh teams' (ancestors of the 'Green Berets'). From the early hours of 6 June 1944 to the destruction of the German army in France, this is the story of how small teams of SAS men fought their secret war behind enemy lines.
Book Description
This book was originally announced over a year ago under the title Insignes et Brevets des Parachutistes Franaises and was, unfortunately, delayed. Now it is on track again and will be available at the very beginning of January.
Not only does each parent organization in the French airborne forces have its own enamelled badge, but the French generally produce a special badge for each major operation or exercise.
The Bilingual text of this unique work accompanies over 3000 full-color photographs of badges and insignia, (captions in French), covering units as well as operations in the Persian Gulf, Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, Lebanon, Chad, Somalia, and elsewhere.
Customer Reviews:
All show, no go..........2006-08-18
The hundreds of excellent photos in this book are the only things that are keeping this book from getting a one star rating. I purchased this as a reference book, not as a picture book. However, there are no dates of usage on the 1000+ badges listed in this book, no constuction information other than a list of manufacturers, no photos of the reverses of the various manufacturers styles.....in fact there is absolutely zero useful information in this book.
If you are looking for tons of pretty pictures of French badges, and don't mind spending $30.00 or so for them, then this is the book for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking for information on French badges......keep looking, as this isn't it.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2005-08-31
This is a fabulous collection of mostly letters written to and by Saint-Exupery during World War II. You really get to see the man in conflict, and how brave someone can truly be.
A peek inside.......2002-03-02
I'm very much a fan of Saint-Exupéry. To be honest, I've found the Little Prince the least appealing of his works, and Wind, Sand, and Stars very definitely his best. I enjoyed this look behind the scenes, as it were, at his motivations, relations with his friends, and perhaps his less protected writings. He is apparently an inveterate rewriter, but I found his presumably less worked over letters equally appealing, with merits of their own.
I gave this only four stars because you should definitely read other books first, most notably Flight to Arras, written during the period covered by this book. But, and I hate to say this, I really did find his words on war, personal security, and what it means to be human to be very relevant after the terrorist attacks on the US. That part comes out more strongly here than in Flight to Arras.

Book Description
Germany's 1940 defeat of the Armze de l'air, perhaps the world's preeminent air force at the close of World War I, is commonly attributed to incompetent French leadership. Drawing on primary French sources not previously available to historians, Cain argues that while lack of interest in and understanding of aviation by the French government and military high commands constrained the French Air Force, there was no shortage of qualified officers who understood the capabilities of a modern air force in warfare.
Customer Reviews:
An often overlooked facet of the war and the nation.......2002-10-05
The Forgotten Air Force: French Air Doctrine In The 1930s by Lt. Col. Anthony Christopher Cain, USAF, is an informed and informative history of the French air force, which despite its many ranks of talented officers and pilots, suffered from incompetent high command and was ultimately crushed in the early years of World War II. Meticulously researched and presented, The Forgotten Air Force closely studies an important and often overlooked facet of the war and the nation. Cain is to be commended for his meticulous research leading to this seminal and enduring contribution to Military Aviation History Studies.
excellent perspective of the pre-war French air force.......2002-09-15
This is the best account of the problems facing the French air force at the beginning of the Second World war. The first part of the book deals with the design problems in developing an air craft that could fulfill both the fighter and the bomber roles and how this resulted in failure. Cain then describes how the French air force had a variety of doctrines in the nineteen thirites but ended up being tied to the army. The most intriging aspect of this book is the dilemma that generals in the French airforce had to face in using experienced personnel for trianing or having them placed on the frontlines. This dilemma strangled the French air force in the opening phases of World War II. I would reccomend this book to anyone interested in knowing the reasons why the French air force was so ineffective in the path of the German Luftwaffe.
