Book Description
International Style
Modernist Architecture from 1925 to 1965
"Modern architecture is not a new branch of an old tree - it is an altogether new shoot rising beside the old roots." Thus Walter Gropius, one of the pioneers of modern architecture, on the radical departures of the 20th century. In the 1930s, the term International Style came into use to describe a new form of architecture evolved from Bauhaus and its conviction that "form follows function". Until the 1980s, International Style set the standard in modern building, with its logical formal idiom and rational solutions to construction problems. Combining steel, glass and concrete, it established an aesthetic founded on the sheer thrill of pushing to the limits of technical and economic viability. Hence the exhil-arating skylines of metropolises worldwide - but also the desolate anonymity of modern suburban environments. This book traces the exciting evolution of a style while examining the individual and regional forms it took, and analyses the ideals and realities of architectural visions of utopia.
The Author:
Hasan-Uddin Khan studied at the Architectural Association in London and subsequently worked as a freelance architect in London and Karachi. From 1977 to 1994 he supervised the Aga Khan's building projects, and was editor of the periodical "Mimar. Architecture in Development" from 1981 until 1992. Since 1994 he has been Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The International Style Bible.......2006-03-25
I noticed the review with the one star given was actually a review for a different book rather than this great one published by Taschen.
If you ever wanted to know what the buzz from 1925 to 1965 was all about with something called the International Style for architecture, this is the book to get. It provides concrete evidence with great photos of all the usual suspects and what nearly most of them built with concrete.
Love it or hate it, the International Style was something that could be touched and was lived in by many. The required materials and technologies were available to build with, so this architecture didn't just end up as long forgotten archived pencil drawings. These buildings were made and a lot of them are still around. Even the ones that people refused to live or work in after a time because utopias can never last while humans continue to reject controls put on them.
There are buildings still made today that kind of look the part of International Style. But there is always something ordinary about them that makes them un-unique and boring. The International Style came to an end pretty much when countries began realizing that it was much better (and cost a lot less) for them to control their people using socialism (i.e. paying them to do nothing and care about nothing) rather than allowing them to gain unique thought and unique lives through costly architecture.
Do not get this book if you are looking for contemporary or neo-modern architecture. Books on that subject can be found everywhere in any bookstore and often don't even mention what architecture came before it. This book is strictly about International Style architecture that lasted roughly 40 years, which was enough to leave a lasting impression even on future generations.
The chapter on sky-scrapers alone is worth getting this book.
Not Up to Usual Taschen Standards.......2005-06-06
I was hoping to purchase a book that concentrated on the early examples International Style 1919-1939. The focus of this books is post World War Two and more particularly the iconic buildings of the great architects. There is nothing wrong about seeing more examples of the works of Mies, Gropius and Le Corbusier. However, they influenced a great number of other architects who produced some very interesting buildings. A style is a lot more than the creations of a few masters.
I love most of the architecture books published by the German Publishing Company, Taschen. However, this is not one of their better books. I found the text to be superficial and the photos not up to their usual high standards.
For anyone interested in learning more about early modernism and more specifically the International Style, I would recommend another Taschen book, "Architecture in the Twentieth Century" by Peter Gossel and Gabriele Leuthausser.
CLEAR TEXT & FASCINATING IMAGES.......2003-06-10
A vivid portrayal of a certain consciousness manifesting itself into films (Lang's Metropolis), paintings, and above all, stunning buildings throughout the world. Mr. Khan delivers this story in clear text and fascinating images.
Having visited many modernist buildings while living and working in many cities abroad, I feel fortunate to have this book activate my memories into a deeper understanding.
The hard cover stays in my collection while the paperback makes many a smart gift.
Discovering the International Style.......2000-09-02
ARCHITECTURE IS A VISUAL MEDIUM! This book lets you see it for yourself!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, finding the text helpful and the photographs really clear and explanatory. The book is aimed at an interested general reader or to the student of architecture, and discusses the subject with enough reference to antecedents to give a grounding, but also lets the subject "speak". The author gently guides the reader by well-chosen example, rather than by telling him or her what to think.
Although many of the early buildings presented are well-known, they are also very well-presented, and the (mostly color) photographs are really stunning. Going further, the attention that Hasan-Uddin Khan pays to building examples from the Third World should be of keen interest to students of those areas -- it could be the subject of a further book in itself.
The comprehensible layout of the chapters and topics aids the reader in following the development of this style of architecture, and the photo captions often give new information, not just a repetition of the text. Last but not least, the brilliant Bauhaus palette of colors used in the endpapers, chapter divisions and dust jacket serve to enhance the reader's pleasure. This is not an expensive book -- very good value -- and would be a useful and enjoyable addition to anyone's library.
Modern Architecture's Official History.......2000-05-01
Almost 70 years after Henry-Russell Hitchcock and Philip Johnson invented the so-called "International Style" to describe the varied avant-garde architecture of Europe and the United States, authors like Hasan-Uddin Khan still regard the term as truth instead of the fiction that it is. This book claims that the architects included in the Museum of Modern Art's 1932 exhibition were working with a "global" approach and "international" outlook, disregarding historical evidence that shows a variety of different social, functional, and formal interests were being pursued by different architects in different locales. The author's approach is reductive and essentializing; he treats architectural history as a series of "isms," and deliberately excludes architects who do not fall under conventional definitions of "modern" architects.
Though he begins the narrative by claiming the international style as "marked by an optimistic belief that the new technologies of industrialization . . . would produce a qualitatively better world," and he describes Hitchcock and Johnson's definition as being based entirely on formal descriptions of the buildings, the author fails to question this transition from the progressive social and functional concerns of the 1920s to a reactionary definition that erased all social meaning and goals of the architects in question. The author also fails to question the arbitrariness of Hitchcock and Johnson's selections.
The photographs are excellent; it makes a nice coffee-table book.

Life lessons.......2003-08-14
"H" White did a wonderful job of putting his "life lessons" on paper to share with the world. I would recommend this book to young and old. If Howard White was able to impart knowledge into some of the greatest athletes of our time (Jordan, Malone, Barkley, Cooper) surely he has something for you.
Wonderful Motivation.......2003-07-17
This book is a wonderful tool to help you establish your goals and provide you with realistic steps to getting there. The format of the book is very intuitiave. I'm having my 12 year old read it next!

Tintin with his camera.......1998-10-23
This book covers 5 intimate subjects: (1) Anachronism Abroad: The life of David McDermott and Peter MacGough. They live 24 hours a day like 100 years ago, in cities like New York, Dublin . . . (2) Arabian Knights: The photographer was able to be invited by kings, Emirs, and Sultans in the Middle East, to photograph their lives and their horses. (3) Circus in Egypt: Shows the very local circuses in Egypt that have now totally disappeared. For 10 cents entrance you were able to see a cow with 5 legs or a woman in a fish body. (4) Transgenderism: Is a document on the famous drag queens in New York City of today before anybody had heard about them. (5) Brave in the West: This is the latest project the photographer has just finished and the first images are published at the end of this book. Again, it's a subject that is disappearing: the very local rodeos in Montana where the young men play as part of becoming a real cowboy.
The black and white photographs look like the old perfect photography. This book really pulls you into those 5 very private worlds the photographer was able to be part of for a small amount of time. I can go through this book over and over again without being bored!

I love the Dawn Rochelle novels. I love how the author goes into good detail.
Ashley's Review.......2006-09-28
I liked this book because it is by Lurlene McDaniel and she is my favorite author. Her books are either about cancer survivors or people with diseases. I have read most of her books and this one wasn't my favorite because it didn't give me the feeling I usually get when I read her books.
It is about a sixteen year old girl named Dawn and she is finding out that she is cured from leukemia! She finds out that they are building a new wing at the hospital for cancer survivors. She is the first one mentioned. They are also burying a time capsule for people to open in one hundred years! Dawn gets to make a speech and pick the things to go into the box.
I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn about cancer, or what life is like having cancer.
No Time To Cry.......2005-12-15
No Time to Cry, Lurlene Mc Daniel, 0-553-57079
"Deep down, inside the deepest part of her heart, in spite of all the encouraging lab reports from her doctors, she wasn't a hundred percent sure she could call herself a survivor and a winner. With the ongoing tests and medications and the possibility of a relapse, she simply wasn't sure." Dawn Rochelle has leukemia since she was in fifth grade. Her two best friends who also had cancer didn't survive. She keeps on hoping that she will be cured some day and live a "normal" life. Dawn had moved away and now goes to a new school., where no one really knows about her having leukemia. Except Rhonda who's is now her friend. One day when Dawn was walking to school, one of her guy friends Jake followed her in a car. And they haven't seen each other in years. And Jake is somewhat cute, so the popular girl Sharon tries to get his attention. Well sure she gets his attention and goes to the dance with him but does her really like her? Adding on to that, one of Dawn's friends who died has a brother, Bret who worked at cancer camp. Bret who is also a good friend of Dawns wants to visit her for Christmas. OF course Dawn says he could stay for a few days because she likes him but she also likes Jake. So which one will she choose, Jake or Bret? The genre of this book is realistic fiction.
I think this book was a page turner, because it always left you somewhere where she has to make a decision, or where you know something exciting is going to happen. An example of a cliffhanger at the end of the chapter is; "What bad news?" Dawn's heart pounded and a queasy sensation filled her stomach. I would recommend this book because I think people will enjoy it as much as I did. The person who would love this book the most is someone who likes reading about teenage problems. Because the whole book is about a teenage girl who has to make a difficult decisions in her life.
The Most Wonderful Book Ever.......2005-09-27
This book is a heart-warming story about a young girl at the age
of 16, who has had cancer recently and has lost two friends to cancer. But, when she runs into an old friend does she feel more than just a friendship around him?
No Time To Cry.......2005-05-13
No Time To Cry is a wonderful book. It is about a girl named Dawn Rochelle. Dawn is almost 16 and is a sophomore in high school. She attends Hardy High with her best friend Rhonda. Dawn had cancer, leukemia, and she is now trying to leave that behind her and go on with a normal life like an ordinary high school student. As Dawn tries to leave the past behind, she constantly is reminded of her past:chemotherapy,a bone marrow transplant, and the death of her best friend Sandy. Her time at Hardy High is very intresting. Her fifth grade crush,Jake, comes back and she starts to like him again yet she likes Sandy's brother Brent which she met at summer camp. Brent is in college so she doesn't really think that he likes her but he does. Katie,Rob's girlfriend, thinks that Dawn should attend the monthly meetings at the hospital for cancer survivors but Dawn doesn't want to because she just wants to forget about cancer. Dawn is mixed up with all the emotions and doesn't know quit how to handle them. She takes it out on others when they just want to help but to her they are just bringing back memories. This is one of the best books I have ever read. I think that everybody can relate to this book simply because everybody has bad memories or things they just want to forget about. Some may have had cancer or have a family member or close friend that has had cancer and may somehow be able to relate to the things that Dawn is going through. I encourage all girls to read this book. I enjoy all the Dawn Rochelle novels and I think that most girls will too.

She has always been able to hide her pain from everyone around her. Unable to continue to hide from the nightmare, she has now decided to tell her story.
