When my grand daughter comes to visit, I like to create a fun environment for her. I bought "How To Draw Funny Faces" for her, and she loved it. Usually she spends no more than 10 minutes on a project or game, but she spent close to an hour drawing the various faces in the book and then hung them on my refrigerator. Great for kids to learn to draw and fun.

I was expecting much more from this book. It rehashes the same expressions over and over again. No directions on how to actually make a funny face, such as changing the expressions of features i.e. raised eyebrows, crossed eyes, dimples at mouth, funny ears. I was disappointed and wouldn't buy this book again.

This does not have the most interesting cartoon characters but it is a book that kids can pick up on their own & do very basic cartoon faces without any help.

PROS: well-written, with few typos. Each chapter introduces cognates to increase vocabulary. Comprehension questions before and after each essay or poem. Contains great pictures of important artwork, people, and landmarks.

CONS: a little pricey. Audio CD and essays have slightly different wording at times.

My Spanish conversation class used this text, and the essays on Latin society, ancient ruins, and past/present famous political leaders are very interesting and informative. It also contains important poems that focus on such topics as the adversities faced by the poor and minorities.

The audio CD helps a lot for pronunciation.

It is a fundamental piece of work on the theoretical study of architecture and cities. The topic that Rossi documents and discusses is far from being concluded, which demonstrates the relevance of this publication edited for the first time about 40 years ago.

I'd recommend this lecture to those involved in the formal study of architecture and urbanism, who might be looking for a solid theoretical basis towards the definition of a "urban science", or simply as a reference to understand the new "urban artifacts" ("urban facts" would be a more accurate translation in my opinion) that occur in our days cities.

As it has been mentioned, this is an excellent book, although I-would-not recommend it as a first approach to the subject. The topics are treated more with academic rigor than practical value, this might be disappointing to anyone who only wants a simple, easy-to-read book about cities and their construction.

The practical work of Aldo Rossi is known to may, and has attracted a great number of followers for its common-sensical approach to architecture, at a time (the 60's) when Modern architecture ran out of steam and fell into a vacuous "play of forms" without sense nor content. Yet the theoretical foundation of the Rossian work remains fairly unknown, and it is distilled into 2 works: the paradigmatic "Architecture of the City", which was a serious attempt to readdress the role of architecture in the urban context [something ignored by most Modernists]; and the "Scientific Autobiography" which is a witty essay of a great architect's discovery and experience of architecture and life... This work,the "Architecture of the City", is definitely the more scholarly of the 2 books translated into English, and despite some of its contestable aspects [the romanticization of the Mietskaserne in Berlin for instance], it still presents itself as one of the key documents on urban thought in the twentieth century, along with Corbusier's "Urbanisme" and Koolhaas's "Delirious New York". Definitely recommended for students of Architecture and Urbanism...

This is my second favorite book of all time on the subject of architecture. The over appreciated invisible cities, by Italo Calvino, still holds at number one. But this book is sadly left behind. Difficult and dense, it is nonetheless one of the most profound and poignant reflections on architecture and man's place in the world. Rossi shows us just how intimately architecture is connected to man's search for happiness, and how it participates in our mortality, our will to live. Read this and love the human project just a little bit more.

Make sure that this is what you are looking for! I had thought there would be significantly more drawings -- there aren't. This set is a beautiful facsimile of 47 of the tiny notebooks Aldo Rossi carried for much of his life. These notebooks are handwritten, in Italian, and do not contain more than a dozen or so drawings. If you are looking for his drawings, look elsewhere. If you read fluent Italian and don't mind spending $600.00 for a peek into Rossi's thought process, then this is for you.

Just an impression of the book.......2006-10-09

I am not sure this book conveys the depth of Rossi's thoughts really well. There are not too many pictures of actual buildings although the (small) pictures shown are so good that I am wanting to see more. Most of the book is dedicated to the (colorful) sketches and the models, which are shown proportionally gigantic compared to the photos of actual buildings and tiny drafted drawings... not to mention that there aren't too many photos of the interior. Overall it gives an impression of more of a fantasy land and in that way is being humorous rather than being serious, to a degree that it almost feels like the editor inverted the importance of the real and the other on purpose to tease you. But I paid over the listed price, and it's not funny. Now I have to find another book to complement this one. However, for the used book price, I'd say that it is totally worth it. It does have lots of stuffs showing the master's process (and an excellent essay called 'the theater of shadows').

What better book to show an architecture student, design student, or even professional designer the virtues and power of the hand? This is a small and compelling book that does not explore, but states clearly the relevance of drawing in Rossi's design process. Though the format of the book is small, the reproductions of Rossi's works are large enough and of high enough quality that we can clearly follow the craft and intuition of the initial responses and investigations of particular design problems. Rossi's drawings are intuitive, playful, and always based solidly in the knowledge of the fundimentals of orthographic, perspective, and axonometric design drawing as well as the subjectivity of gesture. In his drawings, the process, not the product, is paramount. For an instructor of design or drawing, they are wonderful for student analysis. By dismantling and revealing the underlying structures of the visual language that Rossi employs, students and designers alike will be inspired to return to paper in a much more rigorous way to explore the moments between thought and expression that perhaps only drawing can afford. Whether you are a fan of Rossi or not, this book is a great addition to a personal or school library.

Best Fantasy Setting and Game I've Seen.......2002-11-17

I've played them all and I have read a lot of books so I was curious to see what Chronopia had to offer. Wow is the first thing that comes to mind. The book is just fantastic.

It starts with a detailed history of Chronopia from its Third Age into the Fourth. This history is rich with detail and clever ideas that present a world unlike anything we are used to seeing. Sure it has Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs, but they are presented so clearly it was like seeing these races for the first time.

The rules for game play are simple enough, but the richness of the setting translates directly into the eight kingdoms presented in this book. They are full of rich detail and interesting in the extreme. I found myself unable to put it down as each page promised something exciting with each turn. I haven't had this much fun reading something since Game of Thrones.

From a book standpoint, it is a delightful read. From a game standpoint, it is equally vibrant and chock full of permutations that will appeal to any gamer. If you weren't into miniatures games, this still makes an excellent backdrop for a role playing game.
