    Book Description

Hans Kollhof's work is considered among the most ambitious and challenging to be found in the contemporary architecture of the German-speaking countries. Its strength is derived from a deliberate reference to the benchmark of traditional architecture and the highest standards of craftsmanship, often considered somewhat antiquated. This monograph examines 11 recent exemplary projects and analyses their basic underlying features in an extensive essay. Selected texts by Hans Kollhoff himself shed light on his approach to architecture and the background of his works.

Each summer, Andrei Makine's narrator and his sister leave the Soviet Union for the mythical land of France-Atlantis. That this country is a beautiful confabulation, a consolation existing only in his maternal grandmother's mind, makes it no less real. Though Charlotte Lemonnier lives in a town on the edge of the steppe, each night she journeys to a long-ago Paris, telling tales that the children then translate with their more Russian minds: "The president of the Republic was bound to have something Stalinesque about him in the portrait sketched by our imagination. Neuilly was peopled with kolkhozniks. And the slow emergence of Paris from the waters evoked a very Russian emotion--that of fleeting relief after one more historic cataclysm ..."

Makine's first novel is a singing tribute to the alchemy of inspiration, but it is no less familiar with the sorrows of reality. And it is only as he gets older that the narrator begins to piece together his grandmother's far more tragic past--her experiences in the Great War, the October Revolution, and after. Dreams of My Russian Summers is a love letter to an extraordinary woman (it's hard not to see the book as autobiographical) as well as to language and literature, which the boy turns to in avoidance of history's manipulations. It has all the marks of an instant classic.

5 out of 5 stars Depth of memory and connection.......2007-04-01

This novel is unque in placing me into the transparent and transcental dimension of memory. It let me feel the power of reflectoin and voices from the distant past or other worlds. This novel doesn't have to be compared to Proust's masterpiece. The stream of narration and the language (I am reading an English translation) is almost mesmerizing, sending the reader off this world. I would place this as one of the best literary work.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful reflection on what it meant to be Russian and French in the 20 th centruy.......2006-05-28

Andrei Makine's book, Dreams of My Russian Summer's, is a very special book. Even though the author wrote the book in French, and I read it in translation (English), the writing is fantastic. It takes a little getting used to it, it's very "flowery", just to give you fair warning, but once you get used to it, you'll appreciate it. And despite all the attention given to the language, quite a bit actually happens, the dialogue doesn't stand still. It's a moving and interesting story.

The story is told in retrospect in the first person. It's a memory. We are told that he has a grandmother who has both French and Russian backgrounds, born and raised in France and married a Russian and lived out the rest of her life there, making her way through world wars and quirky Russian society. What we're not told immediately is why the narrator is fixated on his grandmother's dual nationality, which is what the novel is about.

Take time to enjoy the language and to fully appreciate the details of the story. I immediately reread the first 20 pages upon finishing, just to make sure I didn't miss anything important. This 1995 book will definitely be read and reread for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical memories of idyllic summers past.......2004-04-04

Andrei Makine, born in Siberia in 1957, has written an prose ode to his French grandmother, a memorable account of life in Communist Russia as lived by the woman who gave him joy, comfort, and permission to dream of other worlds.
Each summer, Andrei and his sister visited this grandmother at the edge of Russia's vast steppes, and in the evening she told them stories of her past. Trapped in Russia after the revolution, she married a Russian and became a hardworking Soviet wife and mother - but she never lost the Frenchness of her utmost being. Slowly, over the years, she reveals harsh truths to young Andrei - but always with a lyrical and dreamlike quality that makes reading this book feel as though you're inhaling pure, gauzy poetry.

      5 out of 5 stars speak, memory.......2003-12-22

A lovely, lyrical "autobiographical novel". Makine, born Russian, has lived in France since 1987. This novel covers his extraordinary relationship with his grandmother, who sets his life in motion by re-telling stories of her French past. This is a wonderful book, filled with spare, powerful writing. One of the loveliest books I've read in a long time.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-08-21

A work of art, Makine's use of language is stunning. Not a quick read, I frequently had to stop and ponder many profound passages. Literature as an art form is not dead.

      Book Description

What to give the person who has everything? This is the dilemma of Frederick Knick-Knack, who surely must have, somewhere in his bags and boxes, his chests and cases, his collection of collections, the ideal gift for his friend Alice. Published in France to considerable acclaim in 1997, and translated into English with more than 30,000 copies sold, The Merchant of Marvels is now available in a new format for readers to rediscover this world of wonders. How will Frederick convey his most perfect love with just one gift? A ticket for a thousand and one flights on a thousand and one nights? Perhaps a marble made by Merlin the Enchanter? Somehow, somewhere he will find the gift like no other, the perfect present. The Merchant of Marvels is an exuberant marriage of word and illustration, its pages rich with finely crafted objets d'art, line drawings, and breathtaking watercolors. Imbued with magic, mystery, and enchant ment, this emerging classic is the quintessential gift book a wonderful story filled with unimaginably beautiful allegory, and a true expression of love and friendship.

a beautifully creative book, fit for a goddess! great for creative inspiration, open to any page and enjoy. the story is beautiful while the illustrations are sublime.

5 out of 5 stars Whimsically illustrated and just plain cool........2007-01-12

The paper it is printed on is heavy stock ecru, like a fine art paper. The illustrations are nothing short of magical and accompany the story beautifully. I won't say any more so as not to spoil any part, except to comment that it is full of whimsy.

This would make a great gift for any artist or illustrator, or any book loving friend.

The only negative was the dust-jacket of the book, which I actually removed for gift giving. Not well designed, it is incongruent with the nature of the book and makes it seem "less."

5 out of 5 stars Will you...can you be tempted?.......2001-08-01

So begins this wonderful book which certainly tempted me! The magnificent Merchant of Marvels takes readers on a journey through a charming story, enhanced by various fairy tales, myths, etc. and adorned with Clement's lovely and original illustrations. This is a book that I was not content just to peruse--I HAD to buy it. A unique and beautiful acquisition for book lovers! I'm not sure if this is considered a children's book, but it seems to be one of those rare tomes that children and adults alike adore--share it with your child or your parent or your spouse or your hairdresser. Perhaps, too, it might be a good book for those who are reluctant to read (if you're a parent--this may apply to your child--particularly children interested in art, fairy tales, etc.--this book might "tempt" them!). Also, I think this is a good book to give to one you love as a romantic gesture.

5 out of 5 stars FOR ALL YOUNG-AT-HEARTS.......2000-12-11

What a wonderful flight for the imagination. One can just hope M. Clement continues to push us into our own worlds of make- believe. We're all children at heart if allowed to explore our whimseys, although this is not strictly a childrens book. It's a great read for bolstering the spirit of the young-at-hearts and for the young-at-heart wannabe's. A worthy gift for those one really cares about.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely, inspiring for artists!.......2000-07-15

I bought this book for myself, and now I'm buying more copies to give to others, for Christmas. It's THAT good!

Don't be confused because it seems to be a "children's" book. It's far more than a cute story... the words and concepts are the sort of thing that inspire great art.

If I could create a billboard for this book, it'd be a take-off on that "This is your brain on drugs" series: I'd have a plain sheet of paper on one side, saying, "This is your creativity," and then on the right side, I'd have a picture of the Sistine Chapel, with the caption, "This is your creativity after reading '...Merchant of Marvels...' " ! *grin*

3 out of 5 stars You can't judge this book by its cover -- or iits title........2000-02-28

Based on the title, I was expecting a book full of some "Dream" ideas of features that modern European architects were incorporating into their designs. What I received was a plan book (ALL plans for sale) of "Luxury European" homes designed by mostly American architects with little insight into any European design criteria. The book is basically a catalog of perspective renderings of homes to be built with accompanying floor plans. Written criteria includes a one page introduction to the plan book. Additional written criteria includes a few brief paragraphs written by each architect espousing the unique European features of the "American" architect's design. There are a total of 18 interior home pictures (all captioned) on 9 of the 29 pages of the first chapter titled "Gallery of European Style". The chapter contains mostly pictures of built homes -- all with plans for sale. As a book of plans, I found the designs mostly interesting and the architects' work above average. The book is well worth having if one is looking for a catalog book of expensive "European Style" home designs plans. Nevertheless, the insights I was expecting from the title are going to be much more of a chore to find by reviewing each and every plan -- and, are they really going to be "European"?

5 out of 5 stars She is Talking to Me, and to All Of Us.......2001-12-12

With every book, I do my best to slowly read, so that I am getting every message that the author is sending me. And if it takes a month to finish a book, that's okay. But, no, this book drew me in like no other book. And I had to read it in one day, as I highlighted so many parts. I journaled, and I said, "Wow! She is talking to me!.

It takes courage and faith to write a book like this. And anyone who reads this book will gain more than imaginable.

As a coach, journalist and public speaker, I have arrived at a point where I am reading more on my money memories, and what messages I am telling myself, so that I create more money than I need to reach my audiences. Ms. Hubbard's book has certainly helped me do this.

You will feel like you are sitting with her, with no one else there, but the 2 of you. You will laugh out loud, maybe even cry. But when you are done reading this book - You will being Cashing in on fulfilling your life, while you meet the demands of your commitments.

Thank you, Ms. Hubbard for giving the world the gifts of who you really are.

5 out of 5 stars She Knows What She's Talking About.......2000-04-07

Ms. Hubbard has done a marvelous job of distilling the timeless truths that allow any woman to succeed. Although targeted to women of color, the book has practical information which can benefit anyone who has a genuine desire to build a better life. As a professional woman myself who has had to recognize and fight past my own set of debilitating internal-messages, I sparked immediately to many of the author's insights. Ms. Hubbard, for example, reminds us of the importance of seeing adversity as an opportunity for growth and of valuing and maintaining a "prosperity mind-set" in which we perceive the world as filled with unlimited good. Most important, she convinces the reader that acquiring wealth, be it monetary or spiritual, is available to us all. She knows what she's talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Make a plan and follow it through.......2000-03-20

This book is for women who work for themselves as well as those who work for somebody else. It can help you if you're still in school and just starting out or about to retire and want to know how to maximize that nest egg. It's practical and down-to-earth and you can use the information immediately, without having to figure it out. Marilyn gives it to you straight in plain English.

Acadie is a country which exists in the imagination and words of its people. Its literature is young; its poetry has emerged from sheer experimentation with language -- both in its form and its content. But the poetry of Acadie is more than simply experimentation: it is also a political expression, an insistence on the very existence of an imaginative country. This is the first anthology of this type ever to be published in English.

            Book Description

Dreams and Destinies, the Rosetta Stone of Marguerite Yourcenar's canon, is an intimate journal of her dreams. In Dreams and Destinies Yourcenar has provided us with the most daring, yet least conventional form of autobiography, a form that allows the reader to view her life refracted through the poetic sensibility of her own sleeping mind. In recording her dream life, Yourcenar wanders through a picture gallery of the soul, pausing before ruined cathedrals filled with candles, dark ravines that hold dead bodies, and still reflecting pools located deep inside soaring gothic churches. Her dreams are populated by men, women, and children as well as animals and mythical creatures. Available for the first time in English in the way that she intended upon her death, Dreams and Destinies is a reminder from one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century that the dreams we create are with us forever.

              Book Description

Meet Daddy Goose--a distant relative of old Mother Goose, the fine-feathered fellow who makes up fantastic stories around her classic nursery rhymes. He's here to fly children through a picture-filled nursery world, telling 12 fresh, funny, five-minute tales behind the cherished poems. Why did Humpty Dumpty sit on that fateful wall? What prompted the Dish and the Spoon to run away together? Daddy Goose explains it all, in a way only he can. With the Goose as a guide, real dads (moms, too!) will be ready with brand-new bedtime stories. A read-aloud collection for the whole family to relish.

Just a quick note to say that this is a lovely & well written biography of Raymond Roussel in English which neatly complements the one by François Caradec, which is also well worth getting. Ford's includes information on texts discovered since Caradec's biography was written; it's slightly more text-based than Roussel's more biographical study. But anything on Roussel in English makes me deliriously happy . . .
