Book Description
Hagia Sophia, the Church of Holy Wisdom, sits majestically atop the plateau that commands the straits separating Europe and Asia. Located near the acropolis of the ancient city of Byzantium, this unparalleled structure has enjoyed an extensive and colorful history, as it has successively been transformed into a cathedral, mosque, monument, and museum. In Hagia Sophia, 1850-1950, Robert S. Nelson explores its many lives.
Built from 532 to 537 as the Cathedral of Constantinople, Hagia Sophia was little studied and seldom recognized as a great monument of world art until the nineteenth century, and Nelson examines the causes and consequences of the building's newly elevated status during that time. He chronicles the grand dome's modern history through a vibrant cast of characters—emperors, sultans, critics, poets, archaeologists, architects, philanthropists, and religious congregations—some of whom spent years studying it, others never visiting the building. But as Nelson shows, they all had a hand in the recreation of Hagia Sophia as a modern architectural icon. By many means and for its own purposes, the West has conceptually transformed Hagia Sophia into the international symbol that it is today.
While other books have covered the architectural history of the structure, this is the first study to address its status as a modern monument. With his narrative of the building's rebirth, Nelson captures its importance for the diverse communities that shape and find meaning in Hagia Sophia. His book will resonate with cultural, architectural, and art historians as well as with those seeking to acquaint themselves with the modern life of an inspired and inspiring building.

A close reading.......2005-11-01
My one criticism of this book - reprinters take note! - is that it does not have a separate bibliography, only endnotes. This, in a book of 250-odd pages of scholarly writing, is completely irritating. But overall it has a wide appeal, in my opinion - I am interested in the history of photography, and his chapter 4 "Making a Picturesque Monument" has one of the most perceptive analyses I've read on the role of photographs in shaping views of a building and a place into a canonical view.

Book Description
Winner of the Runciman Award for 1989. Justinian's great church in Constantinople was the culminating architectural achievement of late antiquity and the first great masterpiece of the Byzantine world. For over 900 years it was Christendom's grandest place of worship and, for most of this time, the seat of the Orthodox patriarch and a principal setting for imperial ceremonies. After the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans, it was for almost 500 years one of the principal mosques of Istanbul. Its influence, both architecturally and liturgically, was widespread and enduring. Drawing on the work of Robert Van Nice for Dumbarton Oaks as well as on his own detailed observations and critical reading of the historical material, Rowland Mainstone's authoritative account of the church presents the genesis and development of its design and construction, the subsequent changes, and its character and influence. His evocative descriptions, complemented by specially prepared plans and drawings and superb photographs, provide a unique record of an unprecedentedly ambitious project. 305 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Almost a top-notch book.......2004-10-25
This is one of the most thorough books about the Hagia Sophia church ever printed. However, it lacked a few important things. First, it would be better as a hardcover. Second, it could have used some 3d renderings of what Justinian's church looked like before the Ottoman conquest. Finally, ALL the pictures are in BLACK AND WHITE! Still a good buy, but do your best to get it at a deal.
Excellent text, fine illustrations, but bad binding.......2001-03-13
Exaustively researched, excruciatingly detailed, and competently illustrated, this is still the best book I know on the subject, although an update to include color illustrations would much improve it. However, the paperback binding is sadly inadequate--my copy fell apart when I opened it...
I am writing about this, and this book was helpful.......2000-03-15
I am writing about the Hagia Sophia, and this book is very helpful for information.
a must for ecclesial, historical and architectural buffs........1998-10-23
A bit technical at times but very interesting overall. Excellent photos and elevations. Plus shows how the Church was originally appointed for Orthodox/Catholic Christian sacred use. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Book Description
The church of Hagia Sophia in Trebizond, built by the emperor Manuel I Grand Komnenos (1238-63) in the aftermath of the fall of Constantinople to the Fourth Crusade, is the finest surviving Byzantine imperial monument of its period. Art and Identity in Thirteenth-Century Byzantium is the first investigation of the church in more than thirty years, and is extensively illustrated in colour and black-and-white, with many images that have never previously been published.
Antony Eastmond examines the architectural, sculptural and painted decorations of the church, placing them in the context of contemporary developments elsewhere in the Byzantine world, in Seljuq Anatolia and among the Caucasian neighbours of Trebizond. Knowledge of this area has been transformed in the last twenty years, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The new evidence that has emerged enables a radically different interpretation of the church to be reached, and raises questions of cultural interchange on the borders of the Christian and Muslim worlds of eastern Anatolia, the Caucasus and Persia.
This study uses the church and its decoration to examine questions of Byzantine identity and imperial ideology in the thirteenth century. This is central to any understanding of the period, as the fall of Constantinople in 1204 divided the Byzantine empire and forced the successor states in Nicaea, Epiros and Trebizond to redefine their concepts of empire in exile. Art is here exploited as significant historical evidence for the nature of imperial power in a contested empire. It is suggested that imperial identity was determined as much by craftsmen and expectations of imperial power as by the emperor's decree; and that this was a credible alternative Byzantine identity to that developed in the empire of Nicaea.

Customer Reviews:
Nice book to buy but .......2007-08-23
Its a nice book but if you already have the other book from Gordon Mackenzie, I wouldn't recommend it. Basically half the book almost has the same things.
If you don't have any book from him.... its a nice buy. you will enjoy reading it.
Fine book to learn from, if you will practice........2007-08-09
I bought the "Watercolorist's Essential Notebook"(WEN) and this "WEN - Landscapes," fearing they would be the same with a few different illustrations. (I was specifically looking for ideas on mountains). I was surprised that the first 20 pages contained the same material, but presented with landscapes theme. The rest of the book had many ideas and suggestions, not just rehashed WEN. There was enough new material to warrant this purchase. I should keep trying the presented techniques, but there was enough to satisfy my desire. For less than the cost of a lesson (I consider shipping/handling the same as using my vehicle to drive to the lesson) I have hours of experimenting ahead of me. The illustrations of the effects of each technique are very good, and the "step by step" illustrations aren't cookie cutter recipes, but suggestions for your own experiments. As a "new watercolorist" (meaning I haven't sold anything yet, but I am at the point of feeling I now could), I was surprised at how well I took to, and how much I learned from, both WEN books. I would say suitable from the start for beginners, and advanced students to working.
Beginner or advanced, if you paint you NEED this book!.......2007-07-13
I was so pleased with this book that I bought the author's previous one, "The Watercolorist's Essential Notebook" and was just as happy with it! I learned so much from this book, and still continue to learn from it. I consider myself a beginner as I have only been studying watercolor for less than a year, but I took it to class and showed it to my instructor. She was so impressed by it that she bought it to use in her classes. Even with an MFA, she found information that was new to her. The author has a wonderful, playful style that makes learning exciting and fun. Whatever your skill level, you owe it to yourself to own this book!
Excellent for beginners and all.......2007-07-12
Mr. MacKenzie shows techniques which all can utilize. I have been doing watercolor paintings for about two and half years with some success. I find his suggestions a great help. He is precise and forthright in his endeavor to share his artistic techniques with each reader. It's a great book.
The Watercolorist's Essential Notebook: Landscapes.......2007-05-09
Excellent review of ways to do landscapes. Good techniques and interresting form.

Forgotten New York: Views of a Lost Metropolis
ASIN: 0762741333 |
Book Description
New York Waters: Profiles from the Edge is the first book to examine and record, in text and photographs, the lives of the men and women who live, work, or play in and along the rivers and coastal waterfronts that surround New York City. Through this collection of idiosyncratic individuals—young and old, male and female, of all ages—a picture of a previously unacknowledged New York community emerges, created by the very archipelago on which it exists.
The exploration includes all five of the city's boroughs and ranges from its most fabled bodies of water, such as the East and Hudson Rivers, to lesser-known ones such as the Erie Basin Arthur Kill, and Hempstead Harbor on Long Island’s North Shore. A remarkable variety of personal perspectives emerges, revealing what the subjects think about their life and work, and placing the book in the same rich tradition as Studs Terkel's classic, Working.
Customer Reviews:
great book .......2007-06-12
this is a great book, very easy and enjoyable to read, NYC has a great colorful and longtime maritime tradition and history that unfortunately is usually overlooked; this book does a fantastic job in providing a good snapshot of it
Book Description
One of Photography's Greatest Classics Now Published In English for the First Time
Aperture is delighted to release a unique classic featuring its first ever-English translation. In La France de Profil, Paul Strand's photographs and commentary by the celebrated French author, poet Claude Roy, combine to capture the essence of rural life in post-war France. Like Strand's renowned books Time in New England and Un Paese, La France de Profil is a profound meditation on place. Strand's portraits of the young and old evoke a sense of history and character. Images of narrow alleys, old tabaco shops, sidewalk cafes and fields convey the textures and rhythms of the French countryside. Claude Roy complements Strand's photographs by adding collages made from small town newspapers and his own wry handwritten musings on French mentality and mores.
Today, La France de Profil is not only a tribute to a way of life that still exists in the French countryside, but a monument to the evocative power of skillfully synthesized pictures and text.
Customer Reviews:
Enhanced with an informative commentary.......2002-04-09
Photographer Paul Strand (1890-1976) created an impressive, ground breaking visual portrait of rural life in post-war France in La France De Profil. Enhanced with an informative commentary by French author, essayist and poet Claude Roy (1915-1997), this truly classic (and even legendary) work has been brought back into print after an absence of almost fifty years and will admirably serve to introduce a whole new generation of photographers and students of the history of photography to a memorable and enduring tribute to combined use of photographic images and writing to explore and showcase a "yesteryear" time, place and people.
