production and prepress.......2007-06-16
This book is a great learning tool for printing... production and prepress. This is a great book to have as a graphic designer or design student. There is a great deal to be learned about printing to get the results you want, and this book will help you along the way. There are amazing terms and definitions to aid in expanding your printing industry vocabulary.
It is broken down into 10 chapters:
Chapter 1 Overview: Planning for Results
Chapter 2 The Parts: Type and Graphics
Chapter 3 Assembling the Parts: Prepress
Chapter 4 Outputting the Parts: Film and Flats
Chapter 5 The Magic of Color
Chapter 6 Using Paper and Ink
Chapter 7 Exploring Offset Printing
Chapter 8 Exploring Other Printing Methods
Chapter 9 Techniques for Finishing and Binding
Chapter 10 Working with Printers
Good for entry level information.......2007-01-22
I use this book to teach a Graphic Production class. This is a good entry level book to wet one's interest in the broad scope of each part of the printing production process. It touchs on everything from scheduling to design to prepress to actually getting it on press al the way through the bindery and shipping processes. Without this basic understanding, new design students have no understanding of what they are creating. This gives a brief snippet about each process. The early designer then at least has an idea of how their final products will possibly be used.
Each area of print production can have its own book and ideally designers will learn these processes in depth. As an entry level book however this has all of the basics without overwhelming the student. It also delivers the dry information that creative folks need in simple clear form. After thirty years in this industry I welcome the simplicity this book provides.
Educationally Priceless!.......2006-06-29

This book teaches you everything you want to know, need to know and more than you can remember after you've read it. "Getting It Printed" is definitely a great reference book to keep close by your side for an immediate informational refresher upon a moments notice. I used this book for an online print production course and will not resell it due to its priceless contents.
If you need a book like this, you can do better........2006-06-25
I have two books currently which are much better than this one. I'm not really interested in spending the next hour of my life typing up a really exhaustive commentary on this book, as this is the first one I've ever done, but I'm just hoping to save you some time and money and I feel very strongly this is a bad book and a waste of your efforts.
It was the required textbook for my Print Production class, and I could've gotten a better understanding of Print Production by sniffing the ink on my local newspaper. The glossary is substandard, the chapters are, to say the least, hardly informative, and the author is often contradictive of his own statements. It doesn't seem as though he has an understanding of Print Production at all. I spent days staring at this book wondering why I didn't understand print, till I realized it wasn't my brain, I had bought a crappy book.
I won't say some of the elements aren't useful, but you'd be better off shopping at the used bookstore by my school, for example, and picking up a used copy for ten bucks. There will be plenty there. You can get everything useful in this book from the Graphics Master (a much better book) or any other Print Production book.
Try Kaj Johansen (spelling... sorry) or Adobe's Print Production Guide. Also, International Paper occassionally prints a guide. Don't buy this one. Graphics Master Seven or Eight would be of MUCH more use to you.
Book Description
People don't just come to Hawaii...they are beckoned. stated a native Hawaiian woman to us. It is perhaps that thought that explains how the paths of two couples gently connected in Hawaii and led not only to a strong friendship but also to a partnership in a project several years in the making. That friendship turned into a bond of love and mutual respect with Janet's artwork always at the core. What we also mutually love and respect is the culture and spiritual beauty of the Hawaiian people. We believe that Hawaii and her native people are national treasures to be honored and preserved. Janet's art does just that. So, if a legend is to be believed, we are all called to Hawaii by the ancients through the visual songs of
Janet Stewart's art. Hope to see you in the islands soon! And if you cannot make it here quite yet, Ohana O Janet Stewart will certainly bring the islands to you. Enjoy!
Customer Reviews:
A Feast For The Eyes.......2000-07-08

Her tender, joyful images of children, animals, beautiful people and gorgeous landscapes provide hours of wonderful viewing for people of all ages. This coffee table book is of top notch quality and is a rare and delectable find.

The Ultimate Alphabet.......2004-11-07
The book was excellent in detail, beautifully designed and gave page after page of hidden items. It provided hours of searching for alphabetic pictures and was very entertaining.
The Ultimate Alphabet....LITERALLY!.......2004-04-18
At first I wasn't sure I liked the book. I didn't like some of the darker pictures like 'Y', or the rhymes that didn't really make any sense to me, but I proved myself wrong. This book is sooo addicting! You could sit down for hours scavenging for words. There are so many!
Some people may mistake this for a little kiddy alphabet book. It couldn't be any less kiddy-ish! It's hard because it's not like the 'I Spy' books, where it has a little rhyme telling you what to find. There aren't many guidelines there to tell you what's in the picture. You have to figure it out yourself. Also, a lot of the words are pretty hard.
This book is definitely worth buying. Buy it and you'll never EVER be bored again!
WONDERFUL AND FUN.......2002-11-14
The Ultimate Alphabet is a very good book. It has 26 pages of every word you can think of. It might take looking in a few different books like a flag, animal, fish, bird, and flower book to do the page. The only thing I don't like is they say there is so many words in a letter and I never find close to that many. I don't know if I sould count the word plural if there is more than one of the thing. I mean paint is not the same word as paints is it? The B's, J's, and P's are my favorite. I would get somewhere all those books the flag, ect. and a dictionary. It's very good. Now let me go back and type the J's on the computer.
Look and Learn.......2002-07-15
I first heard of Mike Wilks when I was nearly 16. We saw a video about him in my art class at school back in 1992. All the kids looked pretty impressed, I certainly was. The film showed the way Wilks produces his pictures. We saw his studio in the Pyrenees mountains, an obsessively clean, sparkling white room, where the artist works in complete silence. The video made it quite clear that Wilks is a perfectionist, treating every image with the utmost care.
I finally bought "The Annotated Ultimate Alphabet" about five years after seeing the video. The quality of the artwork is incredible, there aren't many books like this around. Not only is this book entertaining, it is useful as well. Apparently Mike Wilks was influenced by Salvador Dali, but I think he is better than that. My favourite page is the letter "S", a room filled with more than 1000 objects beginning with that letter. I still can't name everything.
There are all kinds of objects in this book, ranging from the very common, to the really obscure. Some things are instantly recognisable, others will leave you completely baffled. It would be no exaggeration to say that anyone who reads this book and absorbs it fully will become an excellent Scrabble player.
In these images Mike Wilks demonstrates exeptional ability, particularly with the airbrush. Here we see draftsmanship of the highest order, just about every member of the animal kingdom is represented accurately. Pen and ink drawings accompany the word lists, giving additional nourishment to a growing vocabulary.
This book gives new meaning to that phrase about a picture saying a thousand words.
Finally, an alphabet book for adults too.......2002-04-11
If you've never seen this book, you dont know what your missing. This is by far one of the best Art / Puzzle / Alphabet books ever writen (or in this case, painted). Mike Wilks is amazing. He paints hundread of things starting with each letter into each picture. Its great because you have to be creative to figure out them all. If you can find this book, buy it, its totally worth it. I hope the republish it sometime soon.
Book Description
Here are twenty-two outrageous original riddles perfectly targeted to the funny bones of beginning readers. Laughing over the sheer silliness of these riddles and their zany illustrations, young readers will discover for themselves the delight of wacky wordplay. And just what do you hear when cows sing? MOOsic, of course!
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely adorable!.......2007-08-01
You can't go wrong purchasing this book. My son was delighted in being both able to read as well as to tell punchlines to jokes.
Great book for early readers.......2000-12-06
I bought this book for my daughter, age 4, before taking a nine-hour train trip. She had me reading it for hours, and eventually ended up being able to read it herself cover-to-cover. ("Q.: Why did the geese honk at the piggy driver.? A.: Because he was HOGGING the road".)
My daughter loves riddles and wordplay, and this is best book that I have found that uses these elements. In addition, the illustrations are first-rate.
A very engaging book for a young reader with a good sense of humor.

Book Description
Stoo Hample's 1961 classic elicits a fresh round of giggles with this irresistible edition featuring new art from the author-illustrator — and the same wonderful retro feel.
I am silly,
You are silly,
All of us are silly,
Willy.
And everything in THE SILLY BOOK is the silly-willy-nilliest! There are songy sills (oops!) — silly songs, silly stories, silly poems, silly secrets, silly things to do, a silly good-night, and even silly nothings. Anyone who reads this book will laugh like anything or else turn into a bathtub. First published more than forty years ago — when it became an uproariously silly success — THE SILLY BOOK has returned to cause a new generation of children to giggle like gigglecopters (giggle giggle giggle), roll on the floor (roll roll roll), and cheer, "Boodleheimer, Boodleheimer" (CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!).

My favorite book as a kid.......2007-08-31
I think so many others have said it as well as I could have. I STILL remember some of the rhymes from this book. I love it and am getting excited to share it with my toddler. A fantastic silly addition to your collection!
I am silly, you are silly!.......2007-01-16
I had this record as a kid and the songs have stayed with me all these 40+ years. Now with the book I can introduce them to my husband and son. The stories and songs ARE SILLY - they make you laugh and think about alternative ways to compose a song or story. London Bridge is falling up, falling up....London Bridge is falling up, my fair Pickle! This book will make you laugh - and laughing is good for you!
Silly indeed!.......2007-01-09
If your are over 40 you might remember this popular book from your childhood. After years of trying to track it down, here it is again, The Silly Book. A simple name, a simple format, and trust me it is silly. If you have never read it, you will think it is rediculous, and so will your kid, and they will beg you to read it over and over. If you have a little one that loves to make up their own songs, or just likes to rhyme words, they will adore this book. (it will grow on you too!)
Silly is as silly does.......2006-03-27
My six year old LOVES this book. Delightful and timeless.
From Generation to Generation. . ........2006-03-05
Thirty years ago my kids giggled themselves silly over this book--and memorized it virtually from cover to cover. The other day my seven-year-old granddaughter told me that "The Silly Book" was her favorite book and her four-year-old brother's favorite as well. She then proceeded to reel off a large part of the contents from memory. It all came right back to me--and the two of us sang and recited all our favorites on the spot. What fun!

A collection of jokes that will generate giggles from young children.......2007-05-09
This is one of those joke books that I "endured" when my daughter was young. It is a collection of jokes that young children consider hilarious but are somewhat less endearing to adult ears. She would read them to me and then giggle profusely. I enjoyed her pleasure at the jokes and the fact that she was willingly reading on her own. Purchasing this book was money very well spent.
