5 out of 5 stars great introduction to the topic.......2001-04-15

I am writing because in my opinion the editorial description of this book doesn't give readers a clear enough idea of what makes it different from all the other feminism and architecture anthologies currently on sale.

Part of the problem is that there now seem to be so many books with titles like "Gender and Space" etc.

But don't be fooled - this really is the only book out there that tries to give an overview of the impact of feminism on architecture, gathering and reprinting seminal essays from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

Aside from the convenience of having all of these important essays at hand in one volume, the book also provides readers with an excellent bibliography (almost 25 pages) of related books in the field. While the bibliography doesn't refer to absolutely everything, it is pretty comprehensive - and, if you're interested in further research, this gives you a good starting point.

The introductions in this book though are perhaps its best feature - in particular, the introduction to "Gender Space Architecture" by Jane Rendell. When people want to know what feminism can do for architecture (or has done for architecture), I refer them to this essay. It's lucidly written and provides a great map to the subject. Particularly useful for students!

If you're just starting out on this subject, this is the book for you.

        Book Description

Over the last several decades, feminists and architects have independently developed critiques of modern Western assumptions and cultural practices. Architecture and Feminism addresses the intersection of these two seemingly disparate fields through a lively and diverse collection of essays and projects, including interdisciplinary investigations of literature, social history, home economics, and art history.

Articles examine such varied topics as Niki de Saint-Phalles exuberant building-sized female sculpture Hon, the aesthetics and politics of the Playboy bachelor pad, Edith Wharton's ideas on domestic architecture, and the Legend of Master Manole, a disquieting Eastern European folktale that prescribes the ritual entombment of women in the walls of buildings, while visual projects take well-known structures by Philip Johnson and Louis Sullivan as points of departure for a feminist reading of architectural history. Rather than presenting a single, didactic position, this collection offers a range of fresh voices to describe the cross-connections and shared concerns between architecture and feminism.

Contributors to Architecture and Feminism include Manuela Antoniu, Vanessa Chase, Deborah Fausch, Molly Hankwitz, Susan R. Henderson, Amy Landesberg, Lisa Quatrale, Christine S. E. Magar, Mary McLeod, and George Wagner.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book: history of American feminist housing design.......2000-06-10

This book gives the history of how feminist ideas have influenced housing development. The book focuses on both the physical design of housing and the ideas behind those designs for the last two centuries in America. I was surprised to find how we have again and again forgotten what our foremothers (and forefathers) came up with as solutions to the perennial women's issue of combining childcare, housework, and food preparation with working outside the home. Approaches that we think of as new, like co-housing, have been done in the past. We don't always have to invent a new solution, we just have to know better what was tried (successfully or unsuccessfully) before.

A must read for those involved in the development of housing and city planning.

          Book Description

The home as part of material culture is the very place where the intricate relations between architecture, gender and domesticity become visible. This book investigates the multi-layered themes evoked by the interconnections between these terms. The contributions to this book address the gendered conceptions and the use of built spaces, the role of women as active agents of spatial production, and the mutual inscriptions of the materiality of architectural space and gendered subjectivities.

The focus of inquiry is modern architecture, also including the celebrated architecture of the Modern movement as its more common and widely spread derivatives that became the dominant mode of building in the twentieth century. The articles in the introductory section provide an overview of the existing discourse on modernity, domesticity and gender. The following three sections consist of essays on specific spatial scenarios from a broad range of geographical locations in the West, whereby the complicated relationship between gender and domestic space are revealed in architectural discourse and practice. The topics range from well-known architects and architectural examples such as Adolf Loos and the Maison de Verre to relatively unknown cases such as the polykatoikia apartments in Greece. In all cases, the authors' emphasis remains on how the concept of domesticity is produced by the gendered subjectivity of builders and users of domestic spaces and by architectural discourse.

The essays brought together in this book are based upon new interdisciplinary research which enriches architectural history with sociological, anthropological, philosophical and psychoanalytical approaches. Despite the Modern movement's prominent emphasis on housing, the point is often made that modern art and architecture were about the suppression rather than the glorification of domesticity. This book contends that the modern era marks the rise of a new sense of domesticity that developed simultaneously with re-definitions ofgender roles and which led to unprecedented articulations of sexuality with domestic space.

4 out of 5 stars A very interesting and informative look at Regency leisure........2006-03-02

The many Regency-era history buffs will be delighted with this look at the buildings where the upper classes entertained themselves and be very grateful to Jane Rendell for pulling this together into a readable volume. This would be a good choice for their reference shelf. I hesitated at first, since this is obviously an academic work which I feared would be too specialized, but I recommend it to the general reader.

Rendell has not limited herself to an examination of the buildings, but also looks at social factors such that affected their design, such as the illegality of some of the pursuits, and also at how people actually used them. The book is illustrated throughout with the wonderful illustrations that the Cruikshanks did for Pierce Egan's Life in London.

I found Chapter 1, wherein Rendell explains how she came to write this book, somewhat off-putting and stiffly academic, but most of the book is extremely readable and absorbing, with occasional, rare intrusions of academese.

Rendell explains that she was "seduced" by two texts: Luce Irigaray's "Women on the Market" and Pierce Egan's Life in London. I was originally going to say that Irigaray could have been left out, for my taste, I find these analysis inadequate. But I rethought that. At 52, I am old enough to remember how history used to be done, when only political events were "real" history and woman were usually counted among the furnishings, so even if such feminist theorizing sometimes seems silly or lacking in nuance, it is one of the things that has broadened and enriched our understanding of the past.

There is an excellent bibliography, and an index. The notes have running titles giving the pages to which they refer, and so are easy to match with the text.

My compliments to the publisher: the book is well-edited and beautifully printed with generous margins, easy to read type-face.

4 out of 5 stars Reflections on gender distinctions within Impressionism.......2002-03-27

Why and how the author wrote the book is as interesting reading as the book itself. Norma Broude came to realize Impressionism as a subjective art and the fact that is was seen as objective and scientific bothered her. This led to an awareness of myths, misconceptions and the role of gender bias. In Part I she brings out the many continuities between Romanticism and Impressionism. In Part II she reviews much of the scientific and fomalist critical thought of the late 19th century. In Part III, she discusses "feminine gendering" of Impressionism in the late 19th century and it's "Masculinization" in modern times. I learned some important issues about art criticism and its personalities as Ms. Broude explains the positions of several prominent art critics and social historians. If you can manage the author's very academic style, and bear with her occasional sarcastic anger, this is a very scholarly and worthwhile read for anyone interested in art or sociology. It will really make you think and hopefully broaden your appreciation of concepts not usually addressed in the study of art.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding feminist Art History.......1997-10-18

This book did more for my understanding of the magnitude of the number of ways about thinking about art than any other. Broude is able to clearly and coherently explain how standard readings of 19th Century art ignores gender. This is a must-read for anyone who desires to understand the answer to the question'what is a feminist reading?'

                  Book Description

"Color Confidence is one book that no photographer, especially me, can afford to be without!"
                  Art Morris, Photographer (www.birdsasart.com)

Establishing a successful color management workflow that produces predictable results is an important -- yet tricky -- undertaking. Most photographers are all too familiar with the frustration of a print not matching the image on the monitor. In Color Confidence, digital imaging expert Tim Grey provides the crucial information you need to get the color you want, every time.

His results-oriented guide shows you how to manage color effectively across all devices. He demystifies complicated topics and takes you through each component of a color-managed workflow step-by-step.

Designed for busy photographers, this full-color guide cuts through the theory, focusing on the practical information you need to make the best color decisions from capture to output.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-08-08

This is the best book that I have used on this subject. Clear explanations, illustrations, etc.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-16

A really very useful book that explains a complex subject about as clearly as you could hope for. Covers a great range of topics beyond color management. I highly recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Good book if you are searching for a step by step guide........2007-01-25

I was really disapointed by the book. I wanted something that would have been closer to the theories and technicals aspects of color profiles. This is mainly a step by step book to follow with specific software (or even hardware) to reach some goal. It is very software and hardware specific - not generic. I learned more about "how color profiles works together" on websites than in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Much Needed Book.......2006-06-19

Digital photographers don't pay enough attention to color management. This book is exactly what is needed to remedy that lack. You'll find all the basics here, and enough in-depth information to start you on the road to calibrating and fine-tuning your digital equipment to accurately reproduce the colors you see.

5 out of 5 stars Just What You need.......2006-01-06

This is exactly what I was looking for; it gives a quick in-and-out overview of colour management, with detailed information about calibration and profiles. Other books on this topic are twice the size, which I don't think is necessary for most people.

It goes into very good detail, with task-by-task instructions, and is well-organised and clear (One reviewer claims that it was "poorly edited and conceived"; I didn't have any of the problems they did).
