Customer Reviews:
Good.......2007-09-12
This book is very informative and it tries to explain so that there is not much confusion after looking it over.
Beautiful art.......2007-08-23
Loved this book for my Art class. I didn't think I would like the class, fell in love with art, and even kept the book afterwards instead of selling it.
Comprehensive.......2007-02-16
I would recommend this to anyone who wants to better themselves in the region of art history knowledge and the ability to evaluate art's content as well. It was well worth buying and compliments any classes orientated towards the subject...maybe would even overshadow the required text.
Very interesting pictures.......2006-12-07
I purchased this book for my Art History class. Very interesting pictures along with non-boring texts. I really like the accompanied CD as it has all pictures from this text as well as other version of Gardner's art history books. Pictures are crystal clear. Although I finished that class long ago in 2002 and sold the book for school's book store with attractive price, I still have a copy of that CD and often reviewed whenever I saw some interesting stories of art history (such as female goddess from Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code). All pictures are under flash cards section. Besides a good text book, it should be kept as a reference.
good transaction.......2005-10-06
Smooth transaction, book in great condition, very pleased and would do business with again.

Book Description
The market-leading text for the art history survey course, GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES has served as a comprehensive and thoughtfully crafted guide to the defining phases of the world's artistic tradition. With this book in hand, thousands of students have watched the story of art unfold in its full historical, social, religious, economic, and cultural context, and thus deepened their understanding of art, architecture, painting, and sculpture. By virtue of its comprehensive coverage, strong emphasis on context, and rich, accurate art reproductions, GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES has earned and sustained a reputation of excellence and authority. So much so, that in 2001, the Text and Academic Authors Association awarded both the McGuffey and the "Texty" Book Prizes to the Eleventh Edition of the text. It is the first art history book to win either award and the only title ever to win both prizes in one year. The Twelfth Edition maintains and exceeds the richness of the Gardner legacy with updated research and scholarship and an even more beautiful art program featuring more color images than any other art history book available. The Twelfth Edition features such enhancements as more color photographs, a stunning new design, and the most current research and scholarship. What's more, the expanded ancillary package that accompanies GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES, features a wealth of tools to enhance your students' experience in the course. With each new copy of the book, students receive a copy of the ArtStudy 2.0 CD-ROM--an interactive electronic study aid that fully integrates with the Twelfth Edition and includes hundreds of high-quality digital images, plus maps, quizzes, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good Art Histoy book.......2007-03-09
Although the text covers quite a bit, I can't help but feel a bit annoyed in its arbitrary, and sometimes misleading use of chronology. For instance, Heironymus Bosch is covered in the 15th century nothern art chapter, when it seems to me he should be covered in the 16th century northern art chapter, along with Pieter Breugel and Dürer.
Of course this might be somewhat arbitrary too, but I can't help but be annoyed.
Still, despite this one little problem I have with the text, it is very comprehensive. The works are very well reproduced, and in color too, which is delightful.
I know this isn't a helpful review, but I'll conclude saying despite some disagreements I have with the organization of the text, it is still an award winning text and well written. Unlike other textbooks I have, I have no problem reading the chapters without falling asleep. This is a big big plus.
Gardner's Art Through the Ages, Volume II (Chapters 19-34).......2007-02-19
It came pretty quick and was in good condition.
An earlier edition second hand .......2006-11-25
I'm currently working my way through the 8th Ed of this book which I picked up second hand. I'm finding it to be a very good read - the passage of art through the ages is woven together well with the various "ism's" explained well. I'd consider this book to form the foundation of an art book collection, using it as a springboard in to more advanced/theoretical tomes. I have no idea what the 12th Edition contains but I would question having to pay $100 for a copy. Find a earlier edition, second hand and then grab a newer copy to see what new "ism's" have been added. I cannot imagine that the body of the main text has changed much, the most recent edition probably has greater coverage of the "Post-Modernism" and whatever is currently in vogue.
The Old-Soldier of Art History Texts never dies (unfortunately). . . ........2006-01-09
Gardners' has long been regarded as the rather stuffy "bible" of art history texts, mainly because of its commercial longevity (it's been around since the 1930s). Recent editions have suffered under recent editorship. The addition of tiresome "clever" subtitles, coupled with the creeping-in of a new shallower "touchy-feelie" approach to the exegesis of the artworks--no doubt intended to perk-up this withering old warhorse--are sad things to behold. Readers are well-advised to select instead the far superior ART HISTORY by MARILYN STOKSTAD. It is everything Gardners' used to be...and more.
quick.......2005-10-03
got the book, in good condition by the date i was supposed to recieve it. hassle free.

A Great Study Guide.......2007-06-20
This book was recommended to me by an art teacher and it is excellent, showing a chronological history of art with great images. A great reference.
My favorite art book. .......2005-05-09
Gardner's seperates the chapters in this book into regions, cultures and era's.
It includes cultural context informaion essential to understanding art and architecture. There are two ways to explore a piece of art: (1) analyzing the technique and (2) understanding the purpose. Like modern day song lyrics, many pieces of art and architecture were created for some type of political purpose. This book not only discusses the technological advancements in art and architecture, but shows the influences behind the creation of the pieces.
Love this book.......2001-05-22
I let someone borrow my ninth edition and my friend lost it. So I got the tenth edition. I love it. It gives breif history on the popular artists. It gives enough background so you are able to use it for references. I'm not an art major, but I really love the fact that it compiles many artists together. I was at the bookstore and I was looking at individual artist's books. That was when I realized how much I love this book. All the great stuff are in here.
I was introduced by my art history class. But now it's a hobbie to just read up on it.

Fantastic Photographic Artistry.......2003-09-04
Location Portraiture: The Story Behind the Art
Bill McIntosh is a living legend. One of the top photographic artist in the world today. He has elevated photography into the equivalent of the MASTER PAINTERS centuries ago. His images take photography to the highest level. He is truly an artist whether he used a word processor, a scalpel, a tennis court, a paintbrush, a courtroom-whatever vehicle he used he would be at the top. Anyone aspiring to become a portrait artist will benefit greatly by purchasing this book. If you ever get an opportunity to attend one of his workshops or to view one of his exhibits I would highly recommend it. He has contributed to our profession more than anyone alive today. This is truly PHOTOGRAPHIC ART. And he is truly a master!
great for inspiration.......2001-11-30
what i liked about this book was the timelessness of the portraits. some portraits were made a couple years ago, some were made 30 years ... the point being that a well made portrait is timeless art. i think after a year you could revisit this book and be recharged.
Very low value book, poor information, bad photos.......2001-01-22
This book is one of lowest value books I have ever purchased. It is expensive, yet contains very little information. The photos are old-fashioned, very clearly and quite badly posed. They lack, in most cases, any sense of relationship or emotion between the subjects and the environment or the camera and the viewer. Some of the subjects seem as though they have been stuffed, including the glass-eye look.
On the technical side, the book lists the equipment used, but there are no lighting diagrams.
One last note, if there was a picture of the cover page, I would have never bought this book. It shows general Colin Powell, in uniform, in a command room of some sorts. No problem so far, except he looks as if someone punched him in the face, his gaze is empty and disconnected, so much so that you wonder what he is doing in that room and whether he just went there to get his picture taken.
everything you need to know about location portraits.Superb!.......1999-02-20
This book takes you step by step in how a master photographer plans conceptual portraits. He discribes how he communicates with his subjects, poses and lights them and gets the expression from all types of people, men, women, children, couples and groups. Both outdoors, in the home or in their working enviorment. This is the most complete book on this style of portraiture I have ever read.

Book Description
Nefarious master villain Alphonse Feeney's foolproof plan to destroy the world has just hit a snag. The plan's been stolen, co-opted by Feeney's ungrateful minions who are tired of getting pushed around - not to mention murdered! - by their homicidal boss. Now, the world's most dangerously psychotic spy finds himself in the last position he ever wanted to be in: trying to save the world from nuclear Armageddon. And his only chance to do so is to enlist the help of his long-lost slacker son, Doon Feeney, who is sadly lacking when it comes to living up to the Feeney family legacy of both "criminal" and "genius."
