I would recommend this to anyone who wants to better themselves in the region of art history knowledge and the ability to evaluate art's content as well. It was well worth buying and compliments any classes orientated towards the subject...maybe would even overshadow the required text.
Very interesting pictures.......2006-12-07
I purchased this book for my Art History class. Very interesting pictures along with non-boring texts. I really like the accompanied CD as it has all pictures from this text as well as other version of Gardner's art history books. Pictures are crystal clear. Although I finished that class long ago in 2002 and sold the book for school's book store with attractive price, I still have a copy of that CD and often reviewed whenever I saw some interesting stories of art history (such as female goddess from Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code). All pictures are under flash cards section. Besides a good text book, it should be kept as a reference.

My favorite art book. .......2005-05-09
Gardner's seperates the chapters in this book into regions, cultures and era's.
It includes cultural context informaion essential to understanding art and architecture. There are two ways to explore a piece of art: (1) analyzing the technique and (2) understanding the purpose. Like modern day song lyrics, many pieces of art and architecture were created for some type of political purpose. This book not only discusses the technological advancements in art and architecture, but shows the influences behind the creation of the pieces.

I let someone borrow my ninth edition and my friend lost it. So I got the tenth edition. I love it. It gives breif history on the popular artists. It gives enough background so you are able to use it for references. I'm not an art major, but I really love the fact that it compiles many artists together. I was at the bookstore and I was looking at individual artist's books. That was when I realized how much I love this book. All the great stuff are in here.
I was introduced by my art history class. But now it's a hobbie to just read up on it.

I found this to be an excellent book. In fact, in just my first night's reading of a few pages, I learned a lot.
I liked it so much I ordered some other nature and wildlife "How To..." books and have been very satisfied with all of them.
They are not too wordy, not too academic, they stay interesting and the photography is very good.
I had LOTS of "I didn't know THAT" moments.

Jim Heath's family had always had dogs. As a boy he didn't give them a second thought, they were just there. Then he & his wife got a little male Jack Russell, which they named Mono -- you'll have to read the book to find out why. They doted on, played with & patronized the pup. Ergo, he grew to doghood with no training or social manners. He dragged his bemused humans into dog attack after dog attack as they walked the narrow proscribed areas where they lived -- in the Antipodes.
After one particularly hair-raising encounter with a loose German Shepherd Jim sought salvation. Everyone had ideas, mostly bad & Jim spent a small fortune on pepper spray, fog horns & cattle prods -- even resorting to carrying a spear.
Still, like a law-abiding human being, our Jim continued to keep Mono on a short leash & reacting to incoming dogs inappropriately until... he discovered Jacquie Humphrey - dog psychologist. That she was also a human psychologist perplexed our Jim, after all it was his dog who had problems, right? During his first desperate phone call with her, he gleaned some worthy advice & started to put it into practice.
He also read the books Jacquie recommended, & a whole new territory of thought opened up, & our Jim was finally on the path to becoming the leader of his pack & his dog's best friend. Some of what he learnt is simple common sense -- something in short supply these days -- much of what our Jim gleaned is about the long story of wolf & man, & the social life of dogs -- as in peeing, smells, hierarchies, body language & the "getting to know you dances."
At 129 pages YOUR DOG IS WATCHING YOU is a delightful read, & only 4 stars? Because it's unedited & poorly formatted -- not one of BookSurge's better editions, however, our Jim's sense of humor will pull you along, eager to find out what's on the next page.
A good primer of what NOT to do to your pet as well as how to train yourself as its owner, & for all dog-lovers, no matter where in the world you & your dog go a-walking.

This is a charming book with 84 pages of dog photos. English Bulldogs, Bull Terriers and Greyhounds are wonderfully represented.
A caveat: I'm not sure which book the other reviewers are referring to, but this one contains no text besides photo captions, a one-page preface and one page of acknowledgements.

When Fate put a beautiful puppy on my lap I was delighted and at the same time worried by my bottomless ignorance on "dog care".
So I started a research on books addressing this issue. I found many useful ones and profited from them.
Mr. Morris' "Dogwatching" is a very special book. It is not a traditional "How to take care of your Dog"; it's constructed as a series of questions & answers including many different topics that neophytes are willing to discover.
Some themes are serious as "How often do dogs feed?", "Why dogs pant so much?", "At what rate do puppies develop?" or "How does a mother-dog deal with her newborn puppies?"
Some other chapters focus on rather comic issues, but not less important for will be "dog parents" as "Why do puppies chew slippers?" or "Why do dogs try to sleep on their owners' bed?"
Lots of miscellaneous items are discussed in this very short and entertaining book.
It really gave me an overall picture of the "hows" and "whys" of canine mind and eased my apprehensions.
I recommend this book to anyone who's going to raise a puppy. It's also a fun reading for any pet lover and general public.

Book Description
