This book has some great resources for any graphic designer, whether you're needing to figure out the right CMYK mixture for a color, or the average envelope size.

A great resource for all the little details you don't find in your design school text books. I've tossed my Pocket Pal and this is next to my copy of Bringhurst now.
for a beginner.........2007-08-04
i'm a big design book junky. i have shelves of them. so once you have all that.. you really don't need this one. it has little tidbits of design how-to's.
The Book Should Be Renamed.......2007-07-20
After reading the mixed reviews from ambiguous raves to detail specific criticisms, I checked out the book myself in a store.
The book isn't awful, but if you have a production department, it's probably better to ask them a question. The book doesn't outline anything that a production artist wouldn't know and that any competent graphic designer should know by heart.
Without any specific mechanicals or keylines, it'll give you an idea or suggestions for package design, but like a typographer doesn't need to get a book that just lists type samples of what they own (you can print samples out yourself with Fontbook or ask a freshman at any university to kidnap one from their Viscom dept.), a package designer should need such basic package design suggestions.
I was hoping for this to be a cheat-sheet kind of book much like the O'Reilly cookbook series might be, but it's the opposite.
An entire chapter devoted to how color prints! Great for a college freshman without access to a prepress class, but entirely asinine for someone who's done press checks. Your better off referencing Pantone's website or ordering yourself one of their color books since it'll be more accurate than a cheaply printed book like this.
It's actually really baffling that any creative person would rather reference an off the rack book that might suffer light or acid deterioration for CMYK swatches rather than Pantone Formula Guide Coated, unCoated, matte.
Yeah, this is a cheap concise reference, but you get what you pay for and this isn't an exception.
The book should be renamed to:

Dazzling colour and shape .......2007-08-23
I am not really sure what people are hoping to find in this book. Like all of Lark's '500 Series' they are simply inspirational,the are not technical nor are they project based or how to, they are mostly gorgeous eye candy. I am not a glass artist, I am lucky to have a few art glass pieces that I have collected over the years but I bought this book purely to marvel at the shapes, originality and astonishing colours achieved by the wonderful artists whoose work is contained within. Truly luscious pieces each and everyone. Not always functional but certainly inspiring.
Superb photographs, Excellent variety.......2007-03-10
If you are a contemporary art glass collector, you will love the hundreds of photographs in this book. You might even discover a new artist whose work you covet! As a learning tool, however, this book leaves something to be desired. Other than the names of the artists and their techniques, plus the object dimensions, there is not a lot of information. It would have been nice to have examples and descriptions of how the techniques are accomplished. But then, the author - the daughter of one of the world's foremost glass artists - would have needed more than 396 pages.
Disappointing.......2007-01-10
Having paged through the excellent "400 Polymer Clay Designs" by the same publisher, I was disappointed by 500 Glass Objects. I was looking for a book full of exciting inspiration for fused glass, and I wasn't particularly impressed by the selection. I returned it.

Excellent UPnP tutorial.......2003-11-10
I found this book to be a great introduction to the UPnP technology. The authors start with some reasonable assumptions about the skills of the reader, then methodically build a foundation for understanding and implementing the UPnP technology. Highly recommended.
Very good UPnP overview.......2003-11-06
This book gives very good overall overview of UPnP for somebody that is new to this matter. It is done from the Intel tools perspective, which is not surprising given writers affiliation. But, all in all, they try to give an objective picture.
I would like to see more concrete comparisons with Jini though. None of the other, non-UPnP compatible, service discovery methods explicitly mentioned in the book but advantages and shortcomings of UPnP (and there are quite a few) could be understood only in conjunction with other developments. There are currently some domains, for example, where UPnP will simply not work. For somebody, that is interested what other similar technologies are available I can recommend the book "Jini technology: An Overview" by S. Ilango Kumaran because this book gives a broader view of the state of technolgy today (not just Jini).
