Eureka!.......2007-04-01
The missing piece of the jigsaw for me.
After a coupe of years of drawing from observation, Beverley Hale finally revealed the truth - what you is only half of the equation.
Caroline's words.......2007-02-13
I bought another book, anatomy lessons from the greaat masters by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle, which contains 100 great figure drawings analysis. Its printing is bigger and easier to read than Master Class in Figure Drawing, compiled and edited by Terence Coyle
Achievement........2007-01-10
This book is incredible, every artist should have it in his/her reference library.
Page after page of artistic anatomy and drawings of the masters,Leonardo,Rubens,,Degas,Michelangelo.
I practice my drawing skills by copying the masters and learning a lot in the process.
Companion to tape series by Robert B. Hale.......2005-08-18
I purchased the companion tape series from Jo-An Pictures Ltd in NYC (212-532-5003) several years ago. The book and tapes record the lectures given by Robert Beverly Hale at the Art Student's League in NYC. You may never find better instruction on artistic anatomy and drawing the human form! He was without doubt the greatest instructor of this subject! The tapes are almost like attending his classes! You must draw from life as well as study this material to master the subject. If you cannot afford the tapes, at least get this book! You will not find a better investment but you must also make the effort! A valid observation from his lectures: 'You can not draw a form, if you don't know it exists.' If you want to draw figures that will impress other artists, clients with medical training or other sophisticated viewers, then master the lessons in this book!
I believe Tony Ryder may have attended Robert Hale's lectures at the Art Student's League. Also get Tony Ryder's book entitled "The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing". It represents the other traditional approach to figure drawing. His explanation of light and shadow on the human form is the best I have ever seen. He emphasizes that it takes many hours to complete a finished drawing. Quick sketches are good for warming up but it's only one aspect of practice. Both books are well worth the investment!
very comprehensive.......2002-06-04
I am currently in Figure drawing 2 and this book is a wonderful help. I have few figure drawing books that I feel compleatly happy with and this one is the best. It shows you how the masters worked with simple shapes, line, value, mass, and anatomy to represent the figure. It breaks up the chapters into body parts and each chapter deals with that specific part. By presenting works of master artists and disecting them you understand how the human form works and can be expressed. I would reccomend this book to anyone interested in drawing the figure, especially beginers.

Well worth it..........2007-05-19
I don't often write reviews. I read them with each purchase and normally I don't feel the need to contradict others. I found that Bruce Bain's "pretend you never seen one before..." to be chilidish and absolutely off the mark. I am an art student and art appreciation major. When I first went to art class I was self-taught without instruction. This was a good thing. My first professor advised the class "Everything you learned before now forget. You learned it that wrong way! I will teach you the right way". It is just like this that the artist is telling you to forget your preconceived notions and look at subjects with a fresh eye. I picked up this book in the book store and ending up reading ten pages standing in the aisle before I knew it. Its a marvelous find. I highly recommend. I've always had problems drawing the human form and this was immensly helpful.
"pretend you've never seen one before..." .......2004-06-29
"Life Drawing Class" by Lucy Watson:
...begins Chapter 1 under the following headliner:
"When you start drawing figures, pretend you've never seen one before." -Lucy Watson
First of all, nobody needs to PRETEND anything, in order to draw. I mean I'm sorry, but most of us are already living in reality. We have SEEN figures before. and secondarily, if the answer to drawing is PRETENDING, why can't everyone just PRETEND to be able to draw and be done with it? The author's mindset here is absolutely silly with circular logic. This is like saying, "All you have to do to be able to learn to drive a car, is to *...pretend you've never seen one before.*
All I'm saying here is that if an author is going to give a tersely-worded command, articulating a fundamental rule for drawing, why can't it just be something that makes common sense?
An Author might say, "Take your time!" "Be patient." "Never, EVER, beat yourself up!" ....but no; we get, "Pretend you've never seen one before."
I suppose I'm suggesting a better standard for authorship; that is to say, that someone writing a book should be familiar with a subject, and that if somone is offering a rule or commandment as part of a METHOD, then it ought to reflect a more generalized common sense such as ordinary working people are familiar with.
I have continually in my mind, one particular rule regarding drawing instruction books. (this is my personal rule, but I find it critical in judging HOW-TO-DRAW books). THOU SHALT NOT, in a beginning drawing book, instruct the student in the use of color and painting. Learning simply to draw is fundamental, and requires the total dedication of most of any beginning book. Watson violates this rule with a foray into the use of color, halfway through this book, which at only 128 pages, is far too short on basic drawing. In my opinion it is the multitude of cloned books like Watson's that cause many beginners to give up drawing (and subsequently, painting as well) as a HOPELESS endeavour, and convince themselves that they just cannot "get it". In fact, it's a clear case of The-Instructor-Just-Cannot-Teach.
The illustrations of drawn figure models are stiff, lifeless and inarticulate. It is MASSIVELY overpriced with an exorbitant list price of $24.95. Is this for real??? Unbelieveable! A gross rip-off.
I think I'll simply take Lucy Watson's advise in Chapter #1 and "PRETEND" I never saw this book before.

Educational and entertaining!.......2004-04-20
This small, but invaluable book surveys the academic male nude, in all its glory, from the early Victorian age to the early twentieth century. If you imagined that the male nude was taboo in a century of starched collars and frock coats, this collection of exquisite studies will come as a refreshing and entertaining surprise. The introduction is informative, but it is the range of finely observed drawings and sketches that steal the show. The works were selected from an annual exhibition of the male nude in London in the 1980s and fine art quality shines through in the reproductions. Though they were designed as academic exercises for the 'improvement' of students of fine art, this delightful bunch of drawings is surprisingly sensual in effect. This book will prove informative to the art historian and a visual treat for any fan of the male nude. The models were drawn from the finest specimens, including hunky soldiers, strapping labourers and muscular youths, all willing to drop their clothes to earn a crust. In case you are wondering, the good news is that even in Victorian times, many models were drawn fully nude and we can enjoy an uninhibited view of several of the model's finely turned anatomy in all its glory! As a student and fan of the male nude, I can thoroughly recommend this book. I promise you will cherish it, if you go weak at the knees at the thoughts of a strapping young hunks stripped bare and studied with loving devotion.

Very useful.......2006-10-12
This book presents some fine instruction and some fine illustrative paintings. The best part, for me, is that Ms. Lewis shows many color mixtures used to achieve many of the specific colors shown in her paintings. You can learn from this book.
