4 out of 5 stars Good old fashion advice .......2007-09-03

Hamm's Drawing Scenery book was published in 1972, yet it is still full of useful advice to the artist today. As an author, he makes no assumptions about the reader's drawing skills, and gets right down to basics. This book is broad enough to be written for the general artist, whether you are an illustrator, commercial artist, or fine artists. While it has a slight comic book artist feel about it, the tips and advice are not limited to just comic book art. I've only taken one star off for its unusual layout - but then it was written BC (before computers).

5 out of 5 stars Classic good instruction.......2007-08-22

Hamm's How To books are really good. They dissect the shapes of things and show clear ways to draw them.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-08-15

I have loved Jack Hamm's books for years! As an artist, I am constantly looking for new books to try to hone my skills with. And while Jack Hamm's books aren't new, they have been a pivotal part of my self teaching in my skills. I have checked the books out of the library for years, and I would keep them until I HAD to take them back! (Darn!) So, I finally decided that it was time to buy a copy of "Drawing Scenery" for myself! I love it, and I will use it frequently! I love his style of teaching, he breaks it down for you in simple terms and shows you how it CAN be acomplished. I love this book!

5 out of 5 stars Content-packed bargain!.......2005-09-17

Jack Hamm's three books "Drawing the Head and Figure," "How to Draw Animals," and this volume together form what I consider a complete course in commercial illustration but for color theory, which you can find in many other art books. Drawing well is the basis for every other art form especially in illustration.

This is the most difficult of those three volumes. Prepare to spend some time reading and studying it. I felt like I was back in college, and progressed through it one page at a time doing sketches on index cards with a soft pencil to test the ideas and theories he put forward -- and unlike many other art books I've read or classes I've taken, concepts like composition, balance, light and perspective made sense to me after studying this book. It's not a light read but it's so rich.

Jack Hamm's style is engaging but it's very content-dense. His books are the peak of the example-heavy content-rich concise style of art instruction. Step by step projects and long personal essays on technique and feeling aren't what Jack Hamm is about, although his style is engaging he doesn't seem to have the ego that many art instruction writers do. He doesn't claim his methods or compositions or styles are the best. He describes as many different ways to do things as they are and constantly encourages imagination, originality and personal style.

He distinguishes realism from artistic exaggeration and explains effectively why you can't just rely on a photo or even on what you see to create a good believable picture. I'm a writer who has spent a lifetime trying to learn self-illustration and his explanations have successfully broken some mental barriers like overdetailing, lack of focus, bad composition, inconsistent lighting. He encourages boldness and daring.

He has specific examples and details of everything I'd need to use in a scene, from clouds and waves to rocks and trees and houses. Most of all he shows how to create drama within a scene, no matter what the subject is it can be rendered a little bolder than life, it can convey emotion and tell a story.

I'd recommend this without reservation, order all three of them if you don't have them. All of these books have one quality in common. Even after they're read, they are great permanent references with examples of trees, waves, houses, styles of clouds -- the cloud chart pages are great -- so if I'm doing a drawing I can flip to the right section and get ideas for how to handle the sky or what I can do to make the gnarled tree look like endurance.

These books are the kind that will wear out from constant use and need replacing if you're at all fond of drawing, because there's always something new and interesting to find for any future artwork. This is why these classics are still in print. Check out the other two and consider his cartooning book as well if you have any interest in cartooning.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-07-15

I couldn't agree more with Mari Lamar's comments. Absolutely a must have for any art student.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Invaluable!.......2006-03-22

As a graduating film student who is working on a thesis film, I have come to rely solely on this manual. It has absolutely every bit of information that any aspiring filmmaker could need. I've come to call it my "Bible" of filmmaking. Check it out! You won't regret it!

      5 out of 5 stars Hey, it's the "Cinematographer's Bible", you can't do without.......2006-01-27

Anybody who plans on working with REAL film should own this, learn it, know portions of it backwards and forwards and use it to their advantage.

It basically answers ANY questions you may have concerning principal filmmaking, and some very help hints when trying to accomplish various optical and special effects in camera.

Get it, or suffer the consequences.

      5 out of 5 stars The Cinematographer's Bible.......2005-03-04

Also known as "The Cinematographers Bible", this thick hand-sized pocket book is an absolute must for anybody who owns or uses a 16mm, Super 16mm, 35mm, Super 35mm or 70mm motion picture camera (movie cameras). IT WILL NOT TEACH YOU CINEMATOGRAPHY! It is a technical manual to be used when shooting on film and has since become the industry standard book that most amateur and professional cinematographers own and use. Motion pictures cameras are also built around the specifications laid down in this book.

Essentially the first 100 pages deal with all the different types of motion picture cameras, their internal mechanisms, technical details and threading paths. Then the book goes on to dealing with motion picture film itself, the various brands that are available, differences between black and white, color and a bit about the development process of each one. Again, technically detailed. There is also very valuable charts on film lengths and running times according to fps. The lens section is very technical covering the different types of lenses and the most important focal length, distance to subject, measuring charts that is really the most widely used part of this book. There is a massive section on filters, exposure and emulsion testing.

The book then deals with lighting and covers the various aspects of lighting types, bulbs, filters and exposure techniques, all highly technical in nature with references to charts and illustrations. The book ends with a coverage of visual special effects that can be done with the motion picture camera and other special techniques that the cinematographer will need to know about.

You will need this book if you are shooting on film, end of story. If you are looking for a manual that teaches cinematography then choose CINEMATOGRAPHY by Kris Malkiewicz instead. As a note, there is a lot of new digital cinematography cameras on the up and coming that work on digital video tape and not film and many new filmmakers may be advised to check out this route as a cheaper and less costly way of shooting their first film.

I think this book covers alot of subjects, but the depth of each subject is very shallow. if I didn't know many of these things before reading this book I wouldn't understand more than half the explanaisions.
I still havn't finished reading because it's just not informitive enough

3 out of 5 stars Great little book that falls apart........2004-11-25

This is a handy little book which covers many technical aspects of video in one volume. It's been a great resource for my work and I'd recommend it to anyone who is technically minded and is interested in what makes things work and why things are the way they are with digital and analogue video. The reason I've given this particular book only 3 stars is that it has started to shed pages after only having been moderately read. The binding glue is brittle and the pages come flying out. Other than that it is a great book.

This book is quite technical. It's not designed to lead you through learning cinematography -- it's to answer your nagging questions about exactly how your academy-aperture frame gets cropped to 1.85, or exactly what lights to use to properly light your bluescreen.

If you're a beginner, it may not be the place to start, but if you're about to DP a T.V. commercial, music video, or feature film for actual release you'd better have this book handy and comprehend every word of it.

I work in visual effects and I don't know an effects supervisor or DP anywhere who doesn't have this book handy.

It contains updated and new information about the art and craft of cinematography that was written and reviewed by the world's leading experts."

There are 40 chapters and more than 100 tables and charts in the 929-page manual. Each chapter is authored by a renowned expert on the subject. The latest edition features new chapters covering such topics as high-definition telecine mastering and digital film post-production.

        Topics include:

        2 out of 5 stars Garbage........2005-02-24

I was shocked at how little practical information there is in this book. The publisher has the nerve to sell ad space in the book and it appears to be a glorified advertisement for Panavision.

I was very disappointed and returned the book.

2 out of 5 stars Not Quite As Good As Earlier Edition.......2003-11-18

It is up to date with (most) current equipment and practices (obviously). Although there are more pages to this edition than in previous editions, the extra content seems to contain more verbiage at the expense of tables and graphs.

It is disappointing to note the absence of lighting equipment details (photometric data and equipment range) in particular. The focus (pun intended) seems to be more towards cameras, lenses, filters and film.

My 4th edition manual has a better balance in terms of verbiage, tables and graphs, and covers lighting equipment in some detail. Although outdated in some areas, the 4th edition will still remain my primary source of information.

The "novelisation" of this 8th edition has, to a degree, defeated the real purpose of the manual, the provision of readily accessable data via tables and graphs.

If you are after lighting equipment details, then look elsewhere, if not, then consider purchasing this latest edition.

The ASC manual is the bible for cameramen. To go on set or location without it is simply unthinkable. It's an intergrated part of a camera kit. I haven't the revised edition, but I imagine it is as relevant as any other edition.

Unlike all other bibles, (camera) people all over the world subscribe to the ASC's doctorine!

        5 out of 5 stars Truly a Bible.......2002-11-06

Being a film student studying Cinematography, I have come accross various books on the subject, like lenses, different formats, different cameras, etc. The AC Manual is a book which gets together all this information in a single book. The different tables with all the possible calculations that a cinematographer needs to do, are truly useful. All in all, if you are studying Cinematography, i think it's the best book you could buy.

                    Book Description

Katie views life from the warm hood of her mother_s parka. From her safe vantage point, she watches as her mother catches salmon, picks plump, red berries, and leads the family_s dog team across the snow. Then one spring day, Mama decides it is time for her little girl to walk on her own. The first time Katie walks, it_s a short distance - just as far as you can throw a stone. The next time it_s as far as a rabbit runs, then as far as a bear roams! But trying to keep up with Mama takes all of Katie_s energy. _Carry me, Mama!_ she begs, even though Mama knows it_s time for Katie to make her own way. Carry Me, Mama is a charming story about growing up. Young children will understand Katie_s mixed feelings about standing on her own two feet. Here, too, is a perfect bedtime story, as young readers follow Katie and her mother through their walks until it is time for Katie to be tucked in. Charming illustrations by Pauline Paquin are full of life, and reflect the beauty of the northern tundra. Pauline_s unique artistic style incorporates faceless figures. Remarkably expressive, these images reflect her desire for young children to see themselves as the characters in the story.
