Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book.......2007-06-05

It's really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It's great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers, 2nd Edition.......2007-01-06

This is an excellent resouce for the study of rendering. After detailing the elements of color and design, it describes, step-by-step, how to achieve many finishes both interior and exterior. It is both instructive and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2007-01-03

This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn't just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT rendering help.......2006-02-25

                      Book Description

Janie and Sam were happy just being kids -- that is, until celebrities started popping out of their hamper to tell them how to behave and to sell them expensive clothes. With Hollywood and its friends in the liberal media declaring war on traditional values, what's a concerned parent to do? It's "Help! Mom!" to the rescue! This hilarious sequel to "Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed!" reunites gifted storyteller Katharine DeBrecht with award-winning illustrator Jim Hummel for another small lesson in conservatism.

                      4 out of 5 stars An entertaining follow-up . . . .......2007-06-21

. . . to the first "Help! Mom!" book, taking on the subject of the Hollywood Elite, and their influence on what passes for "pop culture" today.

The heroines of this book learn (the hard way) that following the latest trends to come out of Hollywood is not only futile -- but silly -- and that many of the so-called "Hollywood Elites" do take precisely the attitudes which are parodied in this book.

Not quite as funny as the first book (a not uncommon problem with sequels) but nevertheless well worth the purchase price.

As an aside, the tone of many of the reviews for both this book and its predecessor (to say nothing of the tenor of the comments) makes me want to suggest a follow-up title, to wit: "Help! Mom! The Secular Progressives Have No Sense Of Humor!"

                      Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for all ages........2006-12-27

This book was a gift to my wife and I from a Hollywood actress who has had and still has a great career. She is concerned, like all thinking Americans, with the way we take seriously the hair brained exhortations of the Hollywood left. Sadly too many young people (older ones too) worship at the altar of celebrity and will believe anything that today's generation of uneducated, unwashed and foul mouthed film and music stars spew out on a regular basis. As Laura Ingraham would say, "Shut up and entertain"!

The book is aimed at children, however all ages will love it. It is told in a clever style with great art and it is fun to guess which one of Hollywood's sickos are being satirized. There are lessons here about how none of us should make idols of people who would be homeless today if they didn't have sympathetic liberals running the film and recording studios.

This doesn't mean that there are not excellent actors and actresses and singers in the media who do their jobs faithfully and who love our country and God. They don't get enough publicity. It would be hoped that Hollywood is getting the message as we are getting more family films. Hollywood had to take notice as it has been losing money banking on the so called loud mouthed stars who, like the British once said about us, are over paid, over sexed and over here.

This is a book we want all our grandchildren to read and we will do our part to get it in circulation. May God bless you always Katharine DeBrecht. You tell it like it is.

1 out of 5 stars Please Don't buy this book for your Children.......2006-12-09

This book preaches nothing but hate for people who don't share similar beliefs. It's terrible. I read it at a friend's house who got it as a joke gift. Not only is it offensive...it's nothing short of trying to be excused for public bigotry. What happened to kids' books about caring and loving each other? When did hate become okay? And what about Ronald Reagan? Wasn't he part of liberal Hollywood? Schwarenegger? And yet Britney Spears (a life-long republican) is a great role model as she's running around exposing herself to every available camera in town. People like this are horrible influences on our children (I'm talking about the author).

3 out of 5 stars 2nd Help book not as funny.......2006-11-19

I enjoyed the first "Help MOM there are liberals under my bed" - it was witty and short. The second book was too long and bit obscure. I agree with the premise of the book - Hollywood's liberal mentality and the hold they have on our youth is horrible, but this was just not very funny.

I bought the first one as a gift for a couple liberal friends of mine, but I won't do that with this one. Maybe the 9th Circuit book will be better.

                      4 out of 5 stars Funny Book/Excellent Illustrations.......2006-10-03

Janie and Sam are sisters who enjoy watching their favorite TV show, "Stars Know Best." They are saving their money to buy new bikes, but they also want the expensive clothes the starts wear. They decide to get jobs babysitting to earn extra money. After babysitting they are back home relaxing when their closet door bursts open, and "Daisy Smears" (Britney Spears) jumps out to give the girls a fashion lesson. They are so in awe of her that they gladly accept the broken flowers pot and the old sweat sock she gives them to wear on their heads. Daisy takes all of their babysitting money and tells them manners are not cool, what do parents know.

The next day Rayonna (Madonna) the pop singer appears. She tells the girls the flower pot and the sock is sooo last month. What they need is expensive makeup and her latest fashion statement, clown pants. She also tells them about Toenailology, that smelling your feet unlocks the secrets of the universe.

Barbara Buttersand arrives with some far out advice and congresswoman Clunkton holds a press conference. Talented Jim Hummels illustrates the likeness of Britney Spears, Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Howard Stern, Michael Moore, Dan Rather, Bill and Hillary Clinton, all are famous celebrities, so what they say and do is very important. Madonna tells the girls, "Even if we stars live very different lives from the little people in this world, we know what's best for them."

This tongue in cheek, very humorous book tells it like it is. So many of our teens listen to and are guided by the liberal speak spewed by the "stars." They are constantly bombarded by celebrities about the latest fashions, bare midriffs, low slung jeans, tattoos, piercings, and their own version of morals and family values. This is an excellent book to help your tweens and teens see these "stars" for who they really are.

                      Book Description

Their names and faces are emblazoned across marquees and magazines—Susan Sarandon, Madonna, Melanie Griffith, Michelle Pfeiffer—and yet these famous women are not mere icons. They are flesh and blood, heart and soul, and mothers and daughters. This remarkable collection of photographs and comments offers inspirational, candid portraits of more than 50 acclaimed actresses, directors, producers, and performers, each one posing with her mother or daughter.

From Candice Bergen to Jennifer Lopez, the women in this book bring a wide range of perspectives to the universal theme of motherhood. Introduced by actress Carrie Fisher (who poses with her mother, Debbie Reynolds, and her daughter, Billie), and accompanied by each subject's own words, Joyce Ostin's intimate photographs are a testament to the wonder and power of the mother-daughter bond, and make this book an ideal gift for women of any age.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Revlon-UCLA Women's Cancer Research Program.

5 out of 5 stars Celebration of Motherhood.......2001-06-05

I only needed to see the title of this book "Hollywood Moms" and knew it was going to be an extraordinary and picturesque book. The women, their daughters and their own mom's pictured in the book are beauties all in their own right. After reading this book what captured me, was the outstanding work and dedication of Joyce Ostin. I was amazed even after her having and surviving breast cancer, she made me realize we all should still "celebrate" and be so very proud and honored of our womanhood and motherhood. As I am a proud Mom of a remarkable son that I adore so completely, I can absolutely understand the joys and the ups and downs of the greatest "wonder of life" called "Motherhood." PS Maybe we will soon see a book entitled "Hollywood Moms & Sons." Thank you and God Bless

                      2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2001-05-23

I thought the photography was uninspired. The best photo was the cover shot which is probably why it was chosen. I found the text boring and a lot of the shots without any debth of feeling which is astounding when you consider the subject matter.

                      5 out of 5 stars A MULTI STAR STANDOUT.......2001-04-19

"I love having a mother almost as much as I love being one," writes Carrie Fisher in her candid, often funny introduction to this all-star photographic lineup of Hollywood mothers, grandmothers, and offspring.

Of her mom Fisher notes, "When I was younger, I thought my mother was perfect. She was beautiful. She was funny. She was loving and kind......She could only fall from the pedestal I put her on.......Having a daughter of my own made me realize what my mother had been up against while raising me."

As many know, Fisher's parent isn't your routine soccer mom - she's Debbie Reynolds who says of Fisher, "I am just blessed God gave me such a wonderful daughter."

Mutual admiration abounds in this gallery of over 50 luminaries who share very personal recollections of times spent with one another. Each reflection is apt testimony to the abundant strength of the mother/daughter relationship.

Hilary Swank describes her mother as "the one who taught me to follow my heart, trust my instincts, and always believe in myself," while Faith Hill, the mother of two daughters opines, "There is no greater joy than the joy that a child brings."

Candice Bergen pictured with her mother, Frances, and daughter, Chloe, shares a favorite pastime: "Chloe and I would (and still do) take a tray into bed, light the fire, and watch Disney videos..." Chloe mentions singing in the car together an enjoyable experience.

Whether it's Jennifer Lopez, Carol Burnett, Goldie Hawn, Kelly Preston (married to John Travolta) or a host of others, each brings her unique perspective to the joys and privileges of motherhood.

Photographer Ostin, a two-time breast cancer survivor, is donating all proceeds from the sale of her book to breast cancer research. She created Hollywood Moms as a symbol of hope to all women. It is that and a great deal more.

This is a fun-, fast-paced, well-written amateur sleuth mystery with a heroine who thinks dreadful things about pretentious people. The heroine often deplores Hollywood values, yet is fully part of the L.A. scene herself. It's a very enjoyable book.

This is a throughly enjoyable book. Almost everyone can identify with the main character, Lucy Freers, who is more like a 'soccer-mom' in looks and income and is trying to raise a child & have a normal life in tinsel town. When a naked ex-movie star is found murdered floating in her pool she starts doing some sluething on her own. We get to see how the rich & famous act, all told with a wry sense of humor. I give it two thumbs up!

1 out of 5 stars Danielle Steel has the nerve to criticize soap opera writers after writing this?!!!!!.......2007-09-18

I agree with the other reviews of this book. Except for "His Bright Light...", her story about her son, Danielle Steel has not written a decent book in years. Like a lot of my fellow reviewers, I borrowed this book from my local library. I could barely make it half-way through before I gave up in disgust. I hated the characters and I hated the morally superior tone. As a soap opera fan, I especially took offense on behalf of all the talented writers, actors and other professionals in that genre. I'll take a bad episode of any soap opera over this drivel any day. Like another reviewer said, please don't kill any more trees for more of the same old regurgitated plot! You have enough money, Ms. Steel; please take a vacation and a good long break from writing!

                        1 out of 5 stars Pretty sorry.......2007-09-17

I'm about halfway through and debating whether to finish. I've got no sympathy for any of the characters. I got so sick of hearing about this woman's perfect husband, perfect children, perfect marriage, perfect family, perfect life . . . that it was a relief when the husband had an affair with her best friend.

2 out of 5 stars Tanya goes to Hollywood.......2007-09-14

This book tells a story. An exciting story for the main character, not so exciting for the reader.

Whether housewife cum writer Tanya is comparable with Cinderella, Snowwhite, Alice in Wonderland or a melange of the three, is hard to say. Anyway, the lovely, youngish-looking, blessedly content wife and mother of three from Marin County in San Francisco, suddenly finds herself presented with an offer to write a movie script for one of the most important - and exciting! - film directors in Hollywood. Overnight what has for years been a bit of work on the side, turns into a career opportunity beyond Tanya's wildest dreams.

The glitter and fascination of Hollywood, which Tanya is certain she can control, is soon working its magic and Tanya's world is turned upside down. Will it ever be possible to return to her old life??? Or if not, where does her new life lead her? (Of course, her innocent freshness sweeps all the important guys off their feet, so choices are plenty........)

"Bungalow 2" is a pretty boring book (with an even worse cover). Especially are the first 100 pages or so extremely repetitive. The decision as to whether Tanya should except the Hollywood offer is discussed in great detail within the family, page after page. Day and night Tanya analyzes her big chance, her choices and duties - in spite of an AWFUL LOT of money..... While all the time the reader knows that Tanya is going to Bungalow 2, Bel air Hotel in La and that BIG chances are about to take place.

It gets a little bit more fun later. Predictable, OK, but definitely fun and even a bit naughty as Tanya gets hang of life in the movie metropol.

If you get through the first quarter of the book, you will probably manage to finish it.

Actually one star - the second for the naughtiness!!

This is perhaps the worst written book that I have ever attempted to read. How did it get to the best sellers list? Does she keep buying all of her own books until they appear on the list? After just reading one of Anne Tyler's fabulous books, I picked up this book and felt that I was reading the equivalent of a fat-free white bread with fat-free bologna sandwich with a bottled water. All of which is beyond me to why they are on the market. Her named should be changed to Danielle Stole as in "Danielle Stoled my money!"

It annoys me when people base their reviews on how much like the film the book is, the book came first didn't it? anyway, this is an inspiring piece of art which brings together all of the hurt and pain and anger which one feels when a loved one has been lost, and does it in an exciting and thought-provoking way, wouldn't we all love to be Eric for a while, taking revenge on the scum of society? I would, especially when somebody decides to run a key down the side of my car... I think that is where a lot of the appeal of the book comes from, a license to be a vigilante and take revenge. A very enjoyable and emotionally affecting book.

5 out of 5 stars This book combines a fascinating story with beautiful art........1998-08-17

The Crow, Irony and Despair, is the continuance of the tale of Erik, a murdered man brought back to avenge the rape and murder of his fiancee, Shelly. It is a compelling mixture of dark imagery through drawings, poetry, and dialogue/narration. The images are shown shattered, which is reflective of the shattering of Erik and Shelly's lives. There are flashes of memory, and scenes of revenge. It is thoroughly satisfying, and may even lead to a few tears. I highly recommend it for anyobdy who can handle the mature images and language. Do not be turned away from the fact it is a comic book-it is better than most true books I have read.
