Book Description
Published on the centenary of the death of Paul Cézanne (1839–1906), this stunning book celebrates the artist’s depictions of his native Provence. While Cézanne is recognized as one of the fathers of the modern movement, this publication focuses on his own sense of achievement, especially as a painter exploring the landscape in and around his hometown of Aix-en- Provence. Although he spent time elsewhere in France, especially Paris, Cézanne repeatedly returned to Provence, where he lived nearly all of the last twenty years of his life.
In studios at the Jas de Bouffan and at Les Lauves, and on painting expeditions into the surrounding countryside, Cézanne created some of his most original and compelling works, not only landscapes but also portraits of local characters, friends, and family; still lifes, and imaginative figure paintings, such as the monumental bathers painted in the last decade of his life.
Beautifully illustrated with some 160 paintings and watercolors, Cézanne in Provence offers fascinating insights into a true genius in the history of art and his beloved native countryside.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book on Cezanne.......2007-02-12
Great prints and a number of well done articles on Cizanne's work.
A Beautiful Journey.......2006-03-09
This book is a lovely accompaniment to the Cezanne in Provence exhibit. The narration is beautifully written and describes the beautiful landscapes that Cezanne painted. It provides an interesting chronology of Cezanne's life and works.
Beautiful Book.......2006-03-01
This is one of the most beautifully done catalogues I have purchased recently. The color and clarity of the reproductions are excellent. The paper used has a dull mat finish which enhances the quality of the reproductions. If you love Cezanne's painting (which I do), then this is a must have addition to your library.

Book Description
In 1886 Paul Cézanne left Paris permanently to settle in his native Aix-en-Provence. Nina M. Athanassoglou-Kallmyer argues that, far from an escapist venture like Gauguin's stay in Brittany or Monet's visits to Normandy, Cézanne's departure from Paris was a deliberate abandonment intimately connected with late-nineteenth-century French regionalist politics.
Like many of his childhood friends, Cézanne detested the homogenizing effects of modernism and bourgeois capitalism on the culture, people, and landscapes of his beloved Provence. Turning away from the mainstream modernist aesthetic of his impressionist years, Cézanne sought instead to develop a new artistic tradition more evocative of his Provençal heritage. Athanassoglou-Kallmyer shows that Provence served as a distinct and defining cultural force that shaped all aspects of Cézanne's approach to representation, including subject matter, style, and technical treatment. For instance, his self-portraits and portraits of family members reflect a specifically Provençal sense of identity. And Cézanne's Provençal landscapes express an increasingly traditionalist style firmly grounded in details of local history and even geology. These landscapes, together with images of bathers, cardplayers, and other figures, were key facets of Cézanne's imaginary reconstruction of Provence as primordial and idyllic—a modern French Arcadia.
Highly original and lavishly illustrated, Cézanne and Provence gives us an entirely new Cézanne: no longer the quintessential icon of generic, depersonalized modernism, but instead a self-consciously provincial innovator of mainstream styles deeply influenced by Provençal culture, places, and politics.
Customer Reviews:
A stunning picture.......2003-08-08
This lavishly illustrated book paints a fascinating, colorful picture of the artist Cezanne and his life in his native Provence. Cezanne has generally been portrayed as a member of the Paris circles of modern art, but in truth he spent most of his life and time living and working in the beautiful countryside of Provence, where he was born. Kallmyer describes how the painter took the province, with its landscapes, agriculture, and people as a key subject, partly out of political motive. Centrists were working to establish Paris as the political center of power and government in France, much to the dismay and horror of rural French citizens. Cezanne worked hard to help Provence develop the identity it retains today as a lush, magical, light-filled place and the destination of millions of visitors each year.

Monet's Passion: Ideas, Inspiration and Insights from the Painter's Gardens
ASIN: 0743225368 |
Book Description
Paul Cézanne remains one of the world's most beloved Impressionist painters. His works are among the most popular at major museums around the world, and visitors flock each year to Aix-en-Provence, where the garden at his home and studio in Les Lauves remains meticulously maintained to honor his memory.
Now in Cézanne's Garden, award-winning garden writer and photographer Derek Fell offers a groundbreaking approach to the study of the man and his art. Setting images of Cézanne's paintings against breathtaking photographs of his garden as it exists today, Fell offers fresh insight into the man, his art, and the natural world that inspired him. Readers will see how Cézanne's unusual garden -- a wooded landscape layered with brilliant greens and punctuated by strong structural elements -- reflects the artist's innovative theories on color, texture, structure, and light.
Using Cézanne's own letters and the musings of painters who knew him, Fell draws an astonishing portrait of this socially awkward, hardworking man, complete with his favorite outdoor motifs, his favorite still-life subjects, and even his favorite flower: scabiosa. As he traces the development of the artist's career, Fell takes readers on a tour of gardens from Cézanne's early life -- the Jas de Bouffan on his family's estate and the nearby Château Noir -- as well as from his adult years, namely his garden and studio at Les Lauves, showing how it was then and how it stands now. For the practicing gardener, Fell also shows how to create a Cézanne-like garden of one's own, including how to create favorite Cézanne motifs such as vertical gardens and leaf tunnels.
Beautifully illustrated with more than one hundred original photographs and a dozen Cézanne masterpieces, Cézanne's Garden is a revealing look -- using art, photography, and reflection -- at one of the world's most cherished artists.

Cézanne Strove To Fashion Something Other Than Reality.......2005-06-03
CEZANNE in Provence was fashioned in two parts. The first half is part
biography, part travelogue, while the second half contains beautiful
reproductions of Cézanne's paintings.
These paintings are part of a traveling exhibition traveling to Essen, Germany -
Guggenheim Museum in New York form February 10th to May 8th, 2005 - Musee des
Beaux-Arts de Montreal from Sept. 22nd, 2005 to January 8th, 2006 - Marseilles
in 2006 - Washington, Jan 26th, 2006 to May 7th, 2006 and Aix-en-Provence from
June 9th, 2006 to Sept. 17th, 2006
Denis Coutagne has been the director of the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence
since 1980. It is no wonder that he describes Cézanne's paintings with such
authority. Monsieur Coutagne gives us a glimpse in the life of a lonely artist
who thought that art was priesthood. Both Monsieur Coutagne and Cézanne must
have spent a great deal of their time in the area of Aix-en-Provence being
imbued by its idyllic scenery.
Each painting is described lyrically with a profound knowledge of Art History.
Even if you find that Monsieur Coutagnes descriptions are a bit heavy at times,
it helps to understand Cézanne's creative process. Nature for Cézanne "consists
more of depth than of surface, whence the need to include in our vibrations of
light, represented with reds and yellows, enough shades of blue to create a
sense of air." His landscapes of Jas de Bouffan and Mont St. Victoire are imbued
with a "light that does not exist" as he states enigmatically. "By this the
artist meant light as a flux, bathing things and revealing their silhouettes and
forms. Cézanne's oeuvre, therefore, consists in giving visible things their
invisibility, in allowing the passage of one order into the other."
Cézanne strove to fashion something other than reality. In his painting "red
apples" he experiments with flat depth, steep views, tilting the horizontal
plane of a tabletop, etc. thereby creating an image that seems askew but in fact
is very pleasing to the eye and conforms to the canon of traditional painting.
Monsieur Coutagne goes on dissecting each painting with alacrity
In his lifetime, Cézanne was rejected as a painter by the aristocracy of
Aix-en-Provence, leaving him to become a lonely soul who became obsessed with
the beauty around him.
Monsieur Coutagne depicts this countryside in lyrical terms. Whether you are a
painter or just a tourist, you will want to go and wander in the steps of
Cézanne's in Provence.
Or, you can just admire the colored plates masterfully reproduced in CEZANNE in
Provence.

Van Gogh in Arles (Pegasus Library)
ASIN: 3791314513 |
Book Description
Paul Cezanne's life and work were deeply rooted in his native Provence. Some 50 oil paintings and several watercolors and drawings are reproduced in this volume, which focuses on the artist's landscapes, but also discusses his "Bathers" and still lifes.
Customer Reviews:
A delightful introduction.......2006-02-09
This book is a fine introduction to this great artist. The reproductions of the paintings are superb. One thing I really like is that although the author supplies many useful (and jargon free) comments and observations about the Cezanne's life and work, he or she also lets the artist speak for himself through choice selections of his writings. I understand what Cezanne was doing better now. Makes a good gift book too.
More biography than painting.......2002-06-18
This book is well illustrated for the cost of the volume, but it is more of a biography than a book on paintings. It is also well written in readable prose, but the pace of the narrative is broken up by the fact that the illustrations rarely correspond to the place in the text where they are discussed, requiring a fair bit of page flipping. This could have been easily remedied by the publisher. Furthermore, many of the illustrations provided are not discussed at all, or only mentioned in passing. Nevertheless, several key aspects of Cezanne's approach and influence are briefly mentioned, and the text can be enjoyably read in an afternoon. These comments refer to the hardbound edition.
What a great series!! What a great book!!.......2000-11-18
This is the second book I have from the Pegasus Library and I am impressed yet again with the high quality of this book. I love art books, but finding books with high quality images and interesting text is sometimes difficult given my limited price range. This book on Cezanne comes with a commentary which I found better written and more informative than many of the essays found in the huge tomes which seem to dominate the art book world. But every art lover knows the commentary is but a distant concern compared with the quality of the images themselves. The reproductions in this book are bright and clear, crisp enough to see the details, but not unfaithful to the originals. I could go on and on, but I will stop...in short, buy this book!

Shows the math behind image processing special effects.......2005-08-23
This very old book has nothing of value to say on hardware that you can't find in a computer museum, and even its programming environment is a dinosaur. However, the mathematical formulas for the special effects described, as well as the demonstration images make this text a timeless classic. It shows in plain language how to perform such Photoshop effects as solarization simulation, the twirl effect, the fisheye lens effect, the "pinch" effect, and the ever-popular oil painting effect. It shows how simple mathematical manipulation of pixels can yield very interesting results, such as the "Chesson Effect" which manipulates an image into looking like something from the late 1960's painted on glass, and the funhouse mirror effect by manipulating transcendental functions in combination with the image's original pixel values. Once you see how these effects are done, it will stimulate your imagination to create your own original visual effects. The book is considered such a cult classic that a webpage exists for it. Since Amazon throws out reviews with web addresses in them just type "Beyond Photography - The Digital Darkroom" into Google and it should be at the top of the list of links. The website includes - but is not limited to - updates by the author, a user's group, and a zipfile of the original source code. The list of transforms for which there is C-like pseudocode in the book is as follows:
Making a Negative, Logarithmic Correction, Simulated Solarization, Contrast Expansion and Normalization, Focus Restoration, Blurring, Enlarging by an Integer Factor, Shrinking by an Integer Factor, Mirroring, Turning the Picture Upside Down, Rotating by 90 degrees Clockwise, Rotating by 90 degrees Counterclockwise, Averaging Three Images, Weighted Average, Relief, Op-Art Effect, Warping one image with another, Fisheye Lens, Funhouse Mirror, Pinch Effect, Polar Transform Effect, Cartesian Transform Effect, Glass Effect, Spin Painting, Composites with Mattes, Arbitrary Composites, Plotting a Grid, Oil Painting, Picture Shear, Slicing, Tiling, Melting, Making a Matte
Digital Image Manipulation -- Bell Labs Style.......2001-12-16
This book is only 116 pages long, but it has a wealth of information about digital image manipulation. Not really the interactive kind you might do in Photoshop, but the math behind some interesting transformations. This book presents a simple image manipulation language (popi) and the interpreter for it as well. I think that is this available on the net too. Overall this is a great book for anyone interested in getting into the programming/math side of image manipulation.
Oh, many of their sample images are of famous people from the Unix community at Bell Labs.

Great comic book- Lots of laughter!.......2000-06-26
If your the type of person who enjoys raunchy humor, then Tijuana Bible's definetly your kind of book. The book is filled with dirty comic strips that feature both guys and girls. The pictures show people doing everything, everywhere. If your easily offended, you probably shouldn't buy this. It's more of a "guy" book. The only thing I disliked about it is that most of the strips were in black and white.
