Book Description

When thinking of India, it is hard not to think of caste. In academic and common parlance alike, caste has become a central symbol for India, marking it as fundamentally different from other places while expressing its essence. Nicholas Dirks argues that caste is, in fact, neither an unchanged survival of ancient India nor a single system that reflects a core cultural value. Rather than a basic expression of Indian tradition, caste is a modern phenomenon--the product of a concrete historical encounter between India and British colonial rule. Dirks does not contend that caste was invented by the British. But under British domination caste did become a single term capable of naming and above all subsuming India's diverse forms of social identity and organization.

Dirks traces the career of caste from the medieval kingdoms of southern India to the textual traces of early colonial archives; from the commentaries of an eighteenth-century Jesuit to the enumerative obsessions of the late-nineteenth-century census; from the ethnographic writings of colonial administrators to those of twentieth-century Indian scholars seeking to rescue ethnography from its colonial legacy. The book also surveys the rise of caste politics in the twentieth century, focusing in particular on the emergence of caste-based movements that have threatened nationalist consensus.

Castes of Mind is an ambitious book, written by an accomplished scholar with a rare mastery of centuries of Indian history and anthropology. It uses the idea of caste as the basis for a magisterial history of modern India. And in making a powerful case that the colonial past continues to haunt the Indian present, it makes an important contribution to current postcolonial theory and scholarship on contemporary Indian politics.

2 out of 5 stars Some Major Concerns.......2003-06-18

A lucid and though provoking work, Castes of Mind would be close to THE authoritative work on the construction of caste. However the boldness of Dirks's argument, mainly that British rule is responsible for the state of caste today, raises some serious questions, which are not easily answered. Firstly, the book is heavily focused on Southern India, which raises the question of how did this play out in the North, and with whom. The colonial state was not the only actor, and the role of Christian Missionaries in the construction of caste is instructive: no matter how hard they tried to rid the Gangetic plain of caste, it was met with no avail. Secondly, his use of archival material is rather concerning. One one chapter relies heavily on archival material, whlst the remainder is dangerously rhetorical. And lastly, the epilogue raises serious concerns regarding similar scholarship and other interpretations on colonial rule in India. Dirks dismisses offhand essentially any work which might be remotely classified as 'neo-colonial', although he does not seem to quite understand what this concept means. What is most dangerous however is that Dirks dangerously approaches a moral judgement on the British Raj, which is a taboo in the historical profession.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent !.......2002-10-04

The british did not invent caste but they exploited it to the hilt to divide the pluralistic Indian society.
The thesis of the book matters. The thought provoking nature of the book is more valuable than its contents.
Columbia and Chicago are doing a valuable job of undoing or atleast explaining the british (and german) rape on indian history.
A thinking that an objective history can be written, like conducting a laboratory experiment where an observer is independent of the thing that is observed, is a major fallacy . No more attacks of scientific methods on humanities please!

3 out of 5 stars A poor showing.......2002-05-28

Well-read in similar works such as B.S. Cohn, Spivak, et. al., Dirks's is the least tenable, and a farcical display of scholarship. Although he argues that 'the British did not invent caste,' after reading the 315 pages one might actually think they did. Dirks seems to ignore the roles of Brahmanic institutions and hegemony and the role of 'collaboration' and 'capitalist development,' (the latter which he seems to dismiss outright) and one might actually conclude that India was, in the pre-British era, caste-less! Embarrisingly enough, he still refers (however naively) to the uprising of 1857 as the 'Great Rebellion.' The rhetoric and culture of domination must be put behind, if any of are to write unbiased (or a close approximation thereto) history. I wonder how long it will take for Columbia and Chicago to realise this.

      Book Description

With special reference to Baluchistan, 'Nomadism and Colonialism' documents impressively the lasting effects of dominant external colonial influence on local nomadic societies. In general terms, illustrated by specific examples, the author succeeds in showing the diversity and lasting impact
of the externally induced deformation of internal structures and their importance for the development of the present time.

        Book Description

Ranging from the Uruk cities of early Mesopotamia, through the empires of the Romans and the Aztecs, to the colonies of modern European states, Chris Gosden presents a comparative survey of 7,000 years of colonialism. (Archaeology is the only discipline that permits such a long-term view across all forms of colonialism.) Gosden argues that modern colonialism, by giving rise to settler societies, is historically unusual and represents an important area for the long-term study of power and material culture.

          Book Description

Subject to Colonialism provides a much needed revisionist perspective on the way twentieth-century Africa is viewed and analyzed among scholars. Employing literary, historical, and anthropological techniques, Gaurav Desai attempts to generate a new understanding of issues that permeate discussions of Africa by disrupting the centrality of postcolonial texts and focusing instead on the cultural and intellectual production of colonial Africans. In particular, Desai calls for a reevaluation of the “colonial library”—that set of representations and texts that have collectively “invented” Africa as a locus of difference and alterity.
Presenting colonialism not as a singular, monolithic structure but rather as a practice frought with contradictions and tensions, Desai works to historicize the foundation of postcolonialism by decentering both canonical texts and privileged categories of analysis such as race, capitalism, empire, and nation. To achieve this, he focuses on texts that construct or reform—rather than merely reflect—colonialism, placing explicit emphasis on processes, performances, and the practices of everyday life. Reading these texts not merely for the content of their assertions but also for how they were created and received, Desai looks at works such as Jomo Kenyatta’s ethnography of the Gikuyu and Akiga Sai’s history of the Tiv and makes a particular plea for the canonical recuperation of African women’s writing.
Scholars in African history, literature, and philosophy, postcolonial studies, literary criticism, and anthropology will welcome publication of this book.

              Book Description

Does the bible justify Zionism? Since the foundation of the Israeli state in 1948, Torah and tank have become increasingly inseparable, resulting in the forced expulsion and subjugation of millions of indigenous Palestinians. Nur Masalha's new book traces Zionism's evolution from a secular settler movement in the late 19th century, to the messianic faith it has become today. He shows how the biblical language of 'chosen people' and 'promised land' has been used by many Christian and Jewish Zionists as the 'title deeds' for Israel, justifying ethnic division and violence. With Edward Said, Masalha argues that a new politics of peace can only be achieved through a single, democratic state, which replaces religious zealotry with secular equality.

This important new work explores how evolutionary museums developed in the US, UK, and Australia in the late 19th century. This historical investigation also contributes to current debates, both on relationships between culture and the social, and to the rapidly changing practices of modern museums as they seek to shed the legacies of both evolutionary conceptions and colonial science, with the goal of contributing to the development and management of cultural diversity.

                  Book Description

Rejecting simplified notions of "civilizational clashes," Kingship and Colonialism in India’s Deccan argues for a new perspective on Hindu, Muslim, and colonial power relations in India in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Using archival sources from London, Delhi, and Hyderabad, in English, Urdu, and Telugu, the book makes use of interviews and private family records as well as princely-colonial records uncovered outside of the archival respositories.

                  Book Description

The twenty essays in this volume explore the institution of debt bondage in Africa, in which individuals were held as collateral—usually by members of the same family—in lieu of debts that had been incurred. The reliance on personal relationship to guarantee credit arrangements worked well in principal because kinship ties were protected and exploitation levels were thereby limited. Nonetheless, pawnship exposed dependants to the possibilities of enslavement in the event of default on the loan and placed individuals in precarious positions which could result in considerable abuse of original intentions.

These essays also explore how the pressure of the international slave trade, especially along the West African coast further shaped the institution of pawnship and allowed the extension of credit into the interior of West Africa. Far from ending the practice of pawnship, European colonial rule set in motion new demands on the economies and societies of Africa, assuring the continuation of pawnship well into the Depression of the 1930s.

Since the nature of pawnship was such that women and children—the most vulnerable relatives—were often offered as surety of food, money, or other goods advanced on credit, this study also contributes to a gendered analysis of work and production in Africa, demonstrating the close links between credit, servility, and gender in the history of large parts of Africa from the sixteenth to the twentieth century.

The volume includes studies of pawnship along the West African coast, in Igboland, the Niger Delta, the Kingdom of Benin, Yorubaland, Asante and the Gold Coast, East Africa, Sierra Leone and Liberia, and the western Sudan.

this is a beatifully written biography of an underrecognized photographer who spent 3 years from l939-41 travelling alone thru the south of the US for the FSA (Farm "Security Administration) taking incredible photographs. The book is worth while for the photos alone, not to mention the author's fascinating exploration of her life, and investigation of why she essentially gave up photography. A very affirming book in the sense of the choices one makes in life. I found myself showing the book to strangers on an airplane, I was so moved by the story and the photographs. Check it out.

I am already in nursing school, but I ordered this book anyway. I only wish I had found it before I got into school. It answered many questions I had to find out the hard way. It is very informative in so many areas. I would recommend it to anyone looking for answers about nursing school, either before or after you're in school. Excellent and easy to read. Lots of resources listed as well.

This book really answered a lot of questions I had about organization and time management. It focused on the importance of studies as well as emotional and physical well being. I would suggest anyone just beginning nursing school or thinking about it read this book.

I wanted to know all the inner workings of applying and getting into nursing school. AND, I wanted to know how to actually make it through once I got in. This book has it all! From the reality of whether or not nurisng is for me to how to "get in." Plus, study tips, a specific breakdown of what to expect in school and very detailed advice on how to succed in it. I'm talking about details like how to prepare for tests, how to make the most of clinical experiences, and even how to get financial aid! Also, this book explains all about preparing for the licensing exam, and even how to write a "cover letter" and handle job interviews. THOROUGH! Vey thorough. I will refer to it for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent & Full of Info for Students of ALL Ages.......2001-10-17

At first I thought, hmmm...this is kinda skinny for 25 bucks. But now my only complaint is,
WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG, STEPH? This book answered every question you'd ever want to ask
but probably couldn't find the answer to in one place.

It is great! If you don't have much experience in healthcare, and want to be a nurse, this is the book to
get! There are a few others out there, but this one is straight to the point, gives concrete ideas, even
talks about going the LPN route.

Even if you have an idea of what it's like to go to college, or know the classes you'll be taking, the
hoops you have to jump thru, etc., Stephanie actually tells you what'll be like when you have your first
clinical day. She tells you seemingly inconsequential details like the supplies you might be expected to
buy before you actually start your clinicals. That may be a small thing, but if you're tight on a budget
and just approaching your pre-reqs, isn't that a handy thing to know? She spells out what a big time
commitment it will be, how hard it is, etc., but also tells you that you can do it if you just get
                        FOCUSED.

And she tells you how to focus, gives study strategies, note taking tips, how to use study groups. I plan
on reading this section to my son who just began high school and needs help with his study habits. We
will both benefit from committing this one to memory.

She also explains what different specialties of nursing means. Didn't you always wonder what Nursing
Informatics was all about (obviously something about information, but what kind?). She tells you what
the classes that are usually standard in most schools of nursing are about (like what the hec is
"Foundations in Nursing"? Is it the beginning of nursing? The history, or what? It is actually just the
                        "basics").

Financial Aid is covered in this book not so much as to tell you where to go and what to do (altho some of this is there) because truly, as the book advises, your school will steer you in the right direction and it lists some places you can try for additional help. But did you know some grants, loans and scholarships can help with your living expenses? Important information to know if you're a single parent who is wondering how they will go to school, feed the family and have time to study.

Taking the NCLEX is spelled out in detail as well as what to do if you don't pass the first time....or the
                        second.

You can't go wrong with this book and I can't say enough good things about it. Everything from
making your application to the school and what they're looking for to going on to graduate studies is
included in this volume. Plus everything in between. If you are either a traditional high school student
who wonders what the whole education process of a nurse is, or you're a 50-something wanna-be
nurse going back to school after 30 years, you will profit from this book immensely. Absolutely worth
$... and then some! It will keep you from tossing and turning and agonizing over things Stephanie has
thoroughly spelled out in this terrific book!

                        Book Description

Being Grown-Up Isn't All It Was Cracked Up To Be.

Do you ever have the urge to resign from being an adult? Are you burned out by the stresses that come with being grown-up and wish you could be six again - far, far away from the mountains of paperwork and mortgage payments, credit card debt and computer crashes? Unfortunately, no matter how hard you try, you're never going to be six again. But relief is within your grasp, because the secrets of childhood are timeless, and they're available to you right now, no matter how "grown-up" you may be.

In this humorous and inspiring book, cartoonist Jason Kotecki invites you to escape adulthood. He uncovers some of the values that come so easily to children, the ones many of us outgrew as we grew up. Filled with funny anecdotes, real-world examples, and practical advice, this book will help you to:

                        • Break free from the stresses of the fast-paced rat race to find true, abundant happiness.
                        • Accomplish things in your life that you once though impossible.
                        • Discover new opportunities to create financial success for yourself and others.
                        • Become more energized and productive at home and at work.
                        • Improve your health and decrease your chances of heart disease and cancer.
                        • Become more respected and admired by your friends, colleagues, the people you lead - even your enemies!
                        • Gain peace of mind about the things that worry you most.
                        • Create a family dynamic that is more fun, loving, and supportive.

Author Jason Kotecki is the creator of Kim & Jason, the internationally known comic strip about childhood. He has presented to audiences of all ages on the topics of living your dreams, strengthening your faith and renewing your childhood spirit. His humorous insights will leave you encouraged, entertained, and inspired.

You may not be able to be six again, but with this book you will begin to rediscover your childlike spirit, resulting in a more happy and fulfilled life while increasing your chances of changing the world.

5 out of 5 stars Simple ideas with profound potential.......2006-10-10

Every adult should read this book. In a light hearted, easy to read way, Kotecki shows us how to get back to those curious, honest, playful days of our childhood and incorporate them into our "responsible adult lives". This would be a perfect gift for any grown-up.....especially those you think might be suffering from "adultitis".

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Must Read for ages 9 to 99.......2006-10-09

A great book, a must read for anyone ages 9 to 99. Makes a great gift. This book is something that you would not normally buy for yourself but once you read it you will be glad you did. "Kim and Jason" brings out the child in all of us. Read it, enjoy and pass on the good feelings to those around you. Everyone needs a little childhod now and then. BUY THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars Who Wouldn't Want to Escape Adulthood?.......2006-04-03

You know how sometimes you get to the end of a book, and you close it, and you just want to immediately go back to the beginning and start reading it again? That happened to me this week with the book Escape Adulthood, by Jason Kotecki. I think that it will really resonate with visitors to this site, especially those of you who are here mainly because you think that children's books are cool.

Escape Adulthood is a book about conquering "Adultitis". It's about recapturing that childlike excitement and optimism that all of us used to have. The book consists of 8 primary chapters, each discussing a "secret from childhood for stressed out grown-ups." Like "delight in the little things" and "play "and "maintain perspective". Each chapter ends with 11 concrete tips for getting started. For example:

From Chapter 3 (Get Curious) we have tip number 8: "Make it a personal mission to learn something new every day. Read lots of books. It is well known that leaders are readers. That's why mansions always have libraries in them."

From Chapter 4 (Live Passionately): "Even if it's just an hour a week, or 15 minutes each day, do whatever you can to try to carve out some extra time for yourself and your favorite hobby."

From Chapter 5 (Play): "Next time you go out to eat, order dessert first."

Some of the tips are more original than this, and not all of them will be relevant for every reader, but I'll bet that everyone could benefit from following a few of Jason's suggestions. Even if you don't intend to actually follow the suggestions (you're quite happy with your own level of maturity, thank you very much) the book is still fun to read. I laughed out loud many times while reading it. It's also a short, quick read. You could easily squeeze in a chapter every night before bed. And there are comic strips sprinkled throughout (Jason is a cartoonist, with a strip called Kim and Jason).

I do have one small caveat about my recommendation of this book. Throughout this book, Jason makes regular references to God and faith and the Bible. I didn't find it overwhelming or preachy, but if you are someone who will be bothered by this, then this isn't the book for you. Stop here, and go read Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass or Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince instead.

But if you think that you might be suffering from adultitis, or if you just want a book that advises you to play more, then Escape Adulthood is just the book for you.

A slightly longer version of this review was originally published on my blog, Jen Robinson's Book Page, on February 3, 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Remember the Childlike.......2005-10-18

Jason's writing style is smart and insightful, as well as humorous. He reminds us that we can retrieve our childlike qualities from the cobwebs of our brains and tells how to use those to have a more fun and meaningful life. I enoyed his references and quotes, but especially his childhood anecdotes...they conjure up my own childhood memories.

                        5 out of 5 stars Fond Memories.......2005-10-18

Being in the same age range as Jason (1 year younger), and growing up in the very seasonal midwest like he did, I really relate with many of Jason's views. Our childhood's were really not that much different, especially in regards to imaginative playtime. Reading this book easily brought me back to many fond memories of being a child, and many realizations that adulthood really can stink. Seriously, this is a very insightful and enjoyable book, and whether or not you try to follow any of these steps to lighten the mood of your adult life, you will still be brought back to the enjoyable memories of your childhood, and really....that's not a bad reaction at all, right?

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Start for Mentoring Youth.......2001-04-15

No other book provides the passion and power for establishing mentoring connections for youth as this book. While not exactly a how-to-do-it book, it provides enough details about the "why" of mentoring and disinguishes clearly between mentoring that has value for youth versus other types of well-meaning approaches. Chapters are included by the most well-known leaders in the youth mentoring field, including Marc Freedman and Bonnie Benard, that are not only informative and inspiring, but can can easily yield guidance for anyone associated with mentoring youth. All the authors agree that the power of mentoring is not in the "program," but in the relationship.
