Book Description
Having just completed the most significant five-year construction phase in the nation's history, Australian architecture has moved into the world spotlight. During the 1994-99 boom creative vigor was palpable, confidence surged and the entire continent became endowed with a new sense of architectural independence. Because it scans a diverse and momentary scene instead of recording a longer continuum of major achievements, Australian Architecture Now is an unusual history book. It presents two essays, 21 case studies of outstanding public and domestic projects, and in several brief chapters compares selected buildings according to similarities of either genre or style. Close examination reveals surprising evidence that Australian architecture more often reflects the personal styles and attitudes of its creators than the poetic ideal of a unique sense of place.
From the core centers of Sydney and Melbourne to Ayers Rock, Queensland's sunshine coast, and the forests of Tasmania many architectural concepts of great significance have been successfully realized.
Architects featured include Denton Corker Marshall, Harry Seidler, Gabriel Poole, Rex Addison, Peter Stutchbury, Cox Sanderson Ness, Nonda Katsalidis, Sean Godsell, Alexander Tzannes, and more.
Customer Reviews:
fantastic architecture.......2006-12-26
This was an eye-opening account of the exciting architecture that has happened in the 90s & was amazed that Australians had such imaginative architects compared to my image of drunken yahoos.
Anyone who likes modern & deconstruction architecture like liesbekind, Koolhaas, Steven Holl will enjoy this book. Not only focused on homes but on public buildings.
Par Excellence.......2001-04-02
This is a well researched and fine detail architecture book on Australia. The picture resolution is fantastic, and there are hurdles of pictures to look thru. I enjoy thoroughly the experience of browsing thru the book simply or reading the essays that explained about Australian architecture. The authors do not leave any stones unturned by featuring architectural works of any categories that we would envisage such as Public Works, Commerce & Leisure, Revisions of history, Housing, Civic Symbols, Houses that are further broken into subheadings. The discussion basically outlines the obvious, that with the advancement in technology which makes information accessible in a tick, cross information exchange brings the world closer together, closer than we ever imagine. It used to be that Australia is looking at achievements done at the Northern Hemisphere but with its change of attitude, its confidence in stretching its own legs, other countries are looking at what Australia is doing now. The, there's the discussion about 2 types of architects, one type that wants to dominate the nature & the other type that wants to get along with nature. The precedent was already set with the different attitudes of 2 Governors, Governor Arthur Phillip & Governor Macquarie. The initial Governor stressed the usage of line to constrain the space, whilst the other emphasises upon the flow of space. Ultimately, one's attitude is not superior than the others but what they left behind is a legacy to challenge & to debate what's appropriate for the landscape of Australia. All pictures in the book comes with either building plan, or elevation plan, & brief description. Towards the end of the book, there are credits, index, selected readings for enthusiasts. This is an architecture book that doesn't tackle one form of style but many, ranging from brutal, eccentric, tectonic, vernacular, poetry, lyrical, abstract, & so forth. An all rounder book & a book that sure is going to be appreciated & well presented on your coffee table. Architects worth mentioning are Harry Seidler, who learnt under Marcel Breur and Walter Gropius; Glen Murcutt, who is highly regarded for his sensitivity & respect to nature & thus, his design of building that can adapt to local conditions superbly & subsequently, creating a style that is uniquely Australians; Gregory Burgess for his design of the exemplary Aboriginal Cultural Centre by Ayers Rock with pertinence to zoomorphic inclination; Ashton Raggatt McDougall for its complex & out of this world design (not even Deconstructivism); Denton Corker Marshall for their involvements in many major projects (one of the most riveting would have to be Melbourne's City Link Expressway from the Tullamarine Airport, in the best tradition of Luis Barragan) which happened to be the hard copy cover for the Australian Edition & definitely more superior than the cover of the American Edition. Highly recommended.

For a country-style approach to easy wearable or home decorative stenciling projects, Stencilling Made Easy is a good primer. Roses on a watering can and windowbox, cat faces on a T-shirt and sneakers, farm animals on terra-cotta tiles, ivy on a holiday table setting, hearts and checks on kitchen accessories, lacy patterns on wrapping paper and notecards--the surfaces are varied, even if the designs are somewhat mundane. The initial techniques section is quite useful, with brief but helpful coverage of making stencils, using different applicators and paint types, and tips for working on various surfaces (wood, metal, paper, fabric). Each of the step-by-step projects includes full templates. If you want a more sophisticated look, you'll prefer Simple Stamps and Stencils; if folk art's your choice, go with this title. --Amy Handy

Very basic info.......2001-01-24
This slim and small volume gives you basic information about using a home camcorder. Published in 1995, the section on camcorder equipment is already half outdated. The techniques sections cover zooming, panning, tilting, composing, etc. Each of the 101 tips is very brief, to the point of not being too helpful sometimes. For example, lighting -- a very important topic -- receives only superficial coverage.
While this book can be carried with you easily, overall it's a disappointment. If you are genuinely green to camcorder videography, this can get you started. If you are looking to improve your videos, look elsewhere.

Not many adults would be willing to go back to high school voluntarily, but Elinor Burkett was driven by the question that has been haunting Americans since the Columbine shootings: What's going on in our suburban high schools? To find out, she actually spent a year at a suburban Minneapolis high school, sitting in on classes, eavesdropping on gripe sessions, attending pep rallies and concerts, and insinuating herself into the lives of students, teachers, and officials. The result is a first-hand and first-rate account of the myriad factors that are alternately paralyzing and pulling apart public schools. In a vivid lesson in high school social geography, we meet preppies and partiers, hip-hoppers, jocks, and Christian kids, and especially, the loners and outcasts who were harassed and feared after Columbine--kids like Roger Murphy, the school's only black student who quotes Dante and wears chains and spikes; Ashlee Altenbach, a hyperactive cheerleader who uses her ADHD diagnosis as an excuse for her behavior; and Reilly Liebhard, the misunderstood and sorely underchallenged school genius. Even more enlightening, Burkett talks to those on the frontlines, the teachers, as they debate the need for greater discipline and higher standards, complain about being made "the clothing-and-drug police, the lateness brigade and the parent hand-holders," and voice their anger over being the first to be kicked in the game of political football. Over the course of the year, this cast of characters amply illustrates the impact of such hot-button issues as zero tolerance, grade inflation, Internet plagiarizing, and the self-esteem movement. In the end, this one school throws adult society--and the tangled web of social changes that have helped undermine public education--into bold relief. Burkett has brought a keen ear and a fresh approach to a topic freighted by contradictory exhortations and political rhetoric, and penned a valuable and telling contribution to the debate over education reform. --Lesley Reed
Book Description
With a novelist's eye, Elinor Burkett takes readers behind the school system's closed doors, revealing a world of mixed messages, manufactured myths, and political hype.
In the wake of school shootings across the country, one question haunted America: What is going wrong inside our nation's schools? To find out, award-winning journalist Elinor Burkett spent nine months -- from the opening pep rally to graduation day -- in a suburban Minneapolis high school. She attended classes, hung out with students, listened to parents, and joined teachers on the front lines.
She soon discovered that, post-Columbine, fears about loners and misfits, "Smoker's New Year" (a pot holiday), "Zero Tolerance" policies, and school lockdowns have become as much a part of a teen's high school experience as dating and Clearasil. But Burkett goes even deeper and makes some startling conclusions in this poignant exposé of the real problems facing educators, parents, and the children they try to teach.
Customer Reviews:
Asking All the Right Questions.......2006-01-30
Usually I don't like reading the investigative writings of reporters which are so often dry, but Elinor Burkett's writing is anything but dry -- and has all of the scoop of the best of the best of investigative journalism. I first read her book "So Many Enemies, So Little Time" about her experience in Kyrgyzstan which interested me because I had worked in Kyrgyzstan ten years ago. Because I liker her style of writing so much, I wanted to read something else of hers and chose this book. A look into a suburban high school is not something that particularly interests me, but with Elinor Burkett, whatever she is writing about, she builds an interest into the reader with her way of asking all the right questions, and some that nobody else wants to ask but everyone is wondering about. I highly recommend this book to anyone who just like to see a good investigative journalist dig her teeth into a subject and chew and chew and chew until the final product is sometimes disburbing, sometimes beautiful but always, a little closer to the truth.
What was Elinor Burkett Thinking.......2005-06-01
I could not believe Elinor Burkett used REAL FIRST AND LAST NAMES then follow them up with negative discriptions. Many discriptions had personal medical information. Oh yes, I am sure she got them to sign waiver's as they turned 18. She did not care about the students just the story. She got so many facts wrong. Many people were hurt by her inability to be factually accurate. This book should be in the fiction section. I found the book boring and I work at Prior Lake High School. She offered no suggestions to help the lifes she tormented
What Planet Are YOU From?.......2005-04-29
I can't believe that I read the same book as some of the other reviewers. Five stars for THIS book? I suggest some of you go back and read the classics. I'm not a former student of PLHS, a teacher, or an administrator. No, I don't have an ax to grind. I typically read 3-4 books per month on various subjects that interest me.
This one was painful to read. The subject interested me. The book was completely uninteresting. It represented both students and teachers in the same stereotypical manner that other books about high school have for the past 30 years, except it was written after a national tragedy. Great time to sell a book written about life in a high school, but what insight does it offer? Was there something new that the author brought to the table for discussion? Not in my opinion. It seemed to me that she chose a cast of characters from this school and tried to create some spin (and a little nostalgia) in order to sell books at a time of heightened interest in high school education. Well, there's no "news flash" here. And if this author expects me to believe that a woman her age could "integrate" herself into the private happenings of high school teenagers, she is delusional. The only people who know how teenagers think are other teenagers and possibly their therapists. The kids who spoke to her -- the "chosen" ones -- were the kids who wanted to get their name in a book.
When someone actually comes up with some true insight about our education system, I'd like to read about it. If you must read this book, I suggest checking it out at the public library. You will be wasting your time, but at least you won't be wasting your money.
Watch for the Biased Reviews.......2003-05-08
I am giving this book 5 stars even though I think it probably deserves 4. It appears as though a large portion of the negative reviews were written by students who were upset not to be included in the book. Also, one review appears to be duplicated, and I suspect that 4 1-star reviews were written by the same person - the atrocious spelling gave it away.
I am not too many years out of high school (I graduated in 1996) and this book brought back a lot for me. Yes there are plenty of kids who do just fine, and yes there are some kids who just don't care and no matter what you do for them, they still won't. But what about everybody else? I myself had a bad time in high school. I graduated with a C average (a mix of A's in the classes with inspiring teachers, and F's in the classes with the other kind of teachers) and went on to graduate from college Summa Cum Laude. What would have helped me do better in high school? What would have helped me care? I don't know. Neither does Elinor Burkett. She doesn't offer any answers, probably because there isn't one simple answer, other than the fact that we need more well qualified, engaging, inspiring teachers who truly love what they do. They are out there - I have had some, and boy does it make a difference. But what person of that caliber is going to take a job that pays so little? One reviewer said don't let your kids in public school no matter what. The simple fact is that is not a financial reality for many people. I don't think that is the answer. We can't run away from the problem.
I thought the book was very well written. It was a very quick and engaging read. I was drawn in by the characters, and I identified with so much of what they went through. I think one of the problems with high schools is simply a lack of maturity of the students. I felt myself wanting to reach through the pages to tell the students "hang on, it will get better. This is not real life, and this is not the way it will always be."
Scarier than Stephen King!.......2003-04-20
Although it drags a little in the middle, this book ought to be mandatory reading for any parent about to send his or her child to public high school. No discipline, no values, no integrity, little education. I work two jobs so that I can send my kids to private school. Reading this made writing the checks a thousand times easier. The lesson of this book: even if you have to live out of your car, avoid public education!

What's going on out there? Will Eisner uses the idea of extraterrestrial contact to explore the weird happenings right here at home in Life on Another Planet. Serialized in the late 1970s and collected in the graphic-novel form that Eisner both invented and perfected, the story follows scientists, politicians, spies, and nobodies as they struggle to reach their own goals amidst this international crisis. The author paints his characters with broad strokes, and though his science is a little off base and his political satire dated, the novel still mines that same vein of deep truths that Eisner can find running through any subject. --Rob Lightner
Customer Reviews:
The idea of life. .......2007-05-07
This story is not really about life on another planet, but on how the idea of life (Once it's confirmed and not just a vague idea) on another planet will affect our global society. Specifically it seems to focus on those elements which will attempt to exploit the news. From the third world dictator who secedes from the planet, to the Heaven's Gate style cultist who sees a quick buck to be made. This books gives some all too human reactions to what might happen if/when such news breaks on the world. Remember this is all happening before an alien is actually seen. It is about the psychological impact of the news, not lasers and spaceships.
not eisner's best.......2001-12-13
It's like a 60's science fiction movie. Will Eisner's science here is awful. There are spelling mistakes (Bernard, Barnard) and basic terminology mistakes (year, light-year) BUT his human interactions are amazing, and his panel breakdowns are the best (at least most complex) out of any his stuff that I've seen. (I haven't had the opportunity to read many of his later Spirit stories.) His best work is to be found elsewhere (check out his brand-new full-length hardcover book from DC for a trip), but this book is certainly good. Lots of intrigue, politics, spies, murders, humor, and that's where he shines. And it's pretty cheap, so check it out!
"Another Planet" Review.......2000-07-16
A signal comes in from space. Are we alone? Full of espionage, intrigue and classic Will Eisner art, this is a gem for any collection, and great reading in graphic novel format (from the father of graphic novels). Two thumbs up on this one.
Eisner explores alien life waay before the X-files were born.......1998-03-18
From the genius mind of Will Eisner comes what could/will actually happen when another life-form contacts Earth. He explores the many different ways people will react and treat each other when an occurance like this happens. The book reads like you're watching a movie. Well planned out, and almost too close reality for comfort. Excellent illustrations, brilliant plot. A must for all sci-fi lovers, as well as comic lovers.

Book Description
When we zero in on a goal and thoroughly prepare to accomplish it, life is what happens in between. From Another Side of Time by Britina Bovet embodies such elements in her tale of clan rivalry, gender bias, love triangles, and planetary struggle.
Enseha is a small, rural, patriarchal planet where a young woman has been trained to be the leader of her father's army. As the older surviving child of the Lord MacEnzie, Belinda is trained as a warrior. She's hard, though, and beautiful - when she lets her long hair cascade out from under her helmet. After long difficult hyears, many bruises and scars, she's finally wone the respect of the men under her command.
Then, Belinda is called upon to perform a service for which she has no training. She is to wed the son of a neighboring clan leader in order to form a favorable alliance. As the dutiful warrior that she is, she faces this task squarely and is pleasantly surprised by the womanly pleasures she discovers in the arms of her handsome husband, Stuart O'Connor.
Unbeknown to Belinda, her beloved uncles is a scientist who travels back and forth between Earth and Enseha through the use of hidden "gates." Maelgwin O'Hara studies the erratic weather conditions affecting Earth whenever Magic is performed on Enseha. When Earth's environment is on the verge of no longer being suitable to support humans, Belinda, now Queen of Enseha is asked to provide a new home to thousands of refugees.

I enjoyed reading " From Another Side of Time"
so much I read it twice! The adventure, the
mystery! A love story..combined to make great reading.
I got so into the story I read it from beginning
to end in one night....even burned dinner!LOL
Its a book I will always keep in reach to share with
friends:)And a place on my "favorite books shelf"
I cant wait for the story to continue...
From Another Side Of Time.......2001-09-18
Wow, what a great book! The plot was very complex but very easy to follow. Most books that I read takes me a time to get through them. However,in my busy life, I made the effort to finish the book in a timely manner. I could tell that Ms Bovet is a master of building up her characters and expanding her sub plots. "From Another Side Of Time", meets both requirements for an action packed adventure and a true love story.
Each event in the book plays well off the other one. Without giving anything away, the main characters involves well into each other, and into the storyline. It's a great blend of magic, science fiction, and a story of love with great action from the start to the end. I would recommend this book to anyone. It's a very good read. I can't wait for the next installment.
Very creative!.......2001-07-20
The characters are intriguing and the story moves along very well. Great plot and a fantastic imagination and creativity puts it all together. I couldn't put it down until I read it all the way through, because I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. I was always amazed, and never disappointed.
