4 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-08-14

My professor/adviser of art advised me to get this.

It was great advice :D

5 out of 5 stars Just when I thought it was ridiculous to get another anatomy book..........2007-06-07

This book surprised me. I already have several dozen books on art anatomy, but Peck's book has more. He goes into expressions, cultural and age distinctions, and locomotion. Is this the only book you'll need in studying anatomy, probably not. But each book you get on the subject, and study (NOT JUST COLLECT) will hone your visual memory until drawing the figure becomes second nature. Note: Study means putting time and effort on that drawing pad!!! Also, nothing beats drawing from life or imagination! These books are to supplement these areas.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good for the Price.......2007-01-11

This book is a cheap and good reference for beginning figure drawers. The diagrams are fairly clear but some of the hand-drawn references get confusing.

3 out of 5 stars Some sections need more diagrams.......2007-01-09

I bought this book on the account of the positive reviews here. A part of me regrets buying this book because I expected a figure drawing book. It isn't. It's a reference to human anatomy and I guess half if not most of the book is useful. I just can't give it 4 or 5 stars because Mr. Peck uses more words than visual diagrams to explain how the body moves and where fat develops. The section about fat is purely textual. It would have been better if there's a diagram of an average person overlaid with outlines where fat develops.

I still use it to supplement Joseph Sheppard's Drawing the Living Figure though.

I ordered Anatomy of Movement by Blandine Calais-Germain and I hope the high reviews of that book reflect its actual quality.

I guess it's true that there is no one-stop shop book on anatomy and figure drawing. An artist must have access to a library - personal or otherwise - to learn from.

Again, Mr. Peck's book in my opinion doesn't deserve 4 or 5 stars but if you do buy it, you won't regret it as much as let's say buying an anatomy book authored by Christopher Hart (blech).

5 out of 5 stars A great reference.......2007-01-06

This book is very informative, and the best anatomy resource for artists that I have ever used.

5 out of 5 stars A reliable "classic" book.......2005-05-05

I have been doing studies out of this book for several months and it has proven itself useful many times over in helping me learn the subtleties of human gross anatomy. The additional plates are useful in that they give you different styles to look at and evaluate. It may be outdated today, having first appeared over fifty years ago, but as a beginner this has only made it more comforting.

I would hesitate to call this, or any one anatomy book, a definitive one, but it is a good choice to tote around since it's relatively small and comprehensive.

1 out of 5 stars Poor.......2004-04-27

This book contains blurry reproductions of master drawings (Michelangelo, etc.), crudely executed original drawings, hard-to-read text, and at least one error in labelling. Better artistic anantomy books are out there. Three books come to mind: Paul Richer's Artistic Anatomy (from which some of the best drawings in Schider are taken), Eliot Goldfinger's Human Anatomy for Artists, and Stephen Rogers Peck's Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-02-16

I'm not amazed that this book is still in publication. I bought the first press back in 1981 while still a junior in high school on the advice of Joe Kubert to study anatomy. It still sits in my reference today. The wealth of information that it contains should make this book cost more. The plates from Leonardo, the hand section, the muscle groups,on and on and on. This is the must have. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference !.......2000-04-30

I bought this book almost ten years ago for a drawing class I took. I still use it today for reference. This book has to be the most useful book I ever bought while I was a student. I have never gone back to my math or science books. But I always go back to this book. Buy it you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A trusted friend.......1999-11-19

I use this book constantly for both drawing and sculpting. There is enough variety that I don't really need to reference any other books.

4 out of 5 stars goooooood.......2007-09-23

It's a great material!!!! a great research book and reference!!! there really are few chances for people in arts field to gain the knowlege this book provide. Usually the best way is real life observation, but you don't have a model any time you want to draw, do you? so this book is a great material when you don't have that chance and a guide for those who want to improve his work with a real model.
My only complaint is the poor contrast on the pictures. It doesn't have to show deep black shadows but a little bit more of contrast could emphasize better different muscular groups. Any way, most of reference books are the same at end, but not this one!!! Foreshortenig is one of the hardest views to archive for artists (painters, art and human figure students, comic book artist and illustrators, etc)

3 out of 5 stars Atlas of Foreshortening: The Human Figure is Deep Perspective.......2006-08-07

The book is okay. My biggest beef is that a lot of the poses that the models are in are pretty boring and could have been more interesting. They seemed pretty repetative to me as well. However, it does over insight on the muscles shapes formed when looking at the body from deep perspective. You can then takes that and push it to your needs.

It could have been better but it's not bad.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent!.......2005-09-22

This is the book I've been searching for for years! Most art photo reference books will either give you very standard standing, lying, walking poses or very artistic poses(ie unclear) . This book has clear photos of the body in unusual positions. There's a wide variety of poses and sections. Both male and female models.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It's a must for those who can't afford to hire a model everyday.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2004-06-11

There are lots of visual reference books out there. It would be easy to populate a bookshelf with them. After a while, though, they start to look the same.

Not this one. Heavily foreshortened poses are the hardest (for me at least), so this book devotes itself to genuinely distinctive views. It may sound like distortion to describe an arm or leg as being a third length of the other. In fact, it is distortion if they are the same length, when viewed from some angles.

This book gives an uncommon perspective - it has earned its place on my shelves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference Book.......2002-09-30

I have been using Mark Edward Smith's two excellent photographic references as a source for practicing figure drawing over the last year or so. I was a bit hesitant to buy this book - afraid that it might just be duplicating what I already have - but once it arrived in the mail I was really glad that I did. The quality of the photography is *fantastic* and it's printed on a glossy stock which preserves the halftones and detail which unfortunately sometimes get 'washed out' in Smith's books.

The range of poses is great too - from some very classical poses to some really "out-there" angles and poses which border on contortionism. Some of the most beautiful poses in this book are ones which a live model couldn't hold for more than 2-5 minutes, so having it captured on paper is a real bonus. All in all, I wuold say that the combination of poses and camera angles provides a fantastic reference work for studying the muscles of the body in various states of tension and compression.
I think I'm going to be spending lot of time drawing from this book.

                              Book Description

The Old Berlin is lost, as would be any city that has been destroyed more than once. No "Remake" can change this. What then is the new Berlin? Only one thing is certain, that Berlin, today, can only be described as a stringing together of fast-changing phenomena. A city suspended amidst massive developments, Berlin now exists as a metaphor for the unknown. Remake Berlin attempts to do the impossible, to pull together a visual and textual portrait of this unknown city, through the combined imaginations and documentary explorations of eight artists and six writers, men and women, national and international, locals and visitors. They approach the city in a careful way, laconically recording its violent geographies, ironically commenting on the peculiarities of its architecture and population, and finally forming a constructive, exploratory array of subjective glances which, together, draw up a possible portrait of a new Berlin.

                                    Book Description

How are photographs understood as narratives? In this book twenty-two original critical essays tackle this overarching question in a series of case studies moving chronologically across the history of photography from the 1840s to the twenty-first century. The contributors explore the intersections of photography with history, memory, autobiography, time, death, mapping, the discourse of Orientalism, digital technology, and representations of race and gender. The essays range in focus from the role of photographic images in the memorialization of the Holocaust, the Argentine “Dirty War,” and Japanese American internment camps through Man Ray's classic image “Noire et blanche” and Nan Goldin's “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency” to the function of family albums in nineteenth-century England and America.

Hughes and Noble bring together a collection of studies exploring how photography has intersected with history and the human story from its invention in the 19th century to the computer age.

5 out of 5 stars The classic comedy of Bugs Bunny.......1998-02-19

This book captures the history behind Bugs Bunny and all of the other Warner Bros. characters. It provides interesting information on how and why these horrorshow cartoons were made. A few in-depth sections may bore the average reader, but for the most part, the book is filled with intersting tales of car wax.
