Book Description
Art of Engagement takes the first comprehensive look at the key role of California's art and artists in politics and culture since 1945. Tracing the remarkably fertile confluence of political agitation and passionately engaged art, Peter Selz leads readers on a journey that begins with the Nazi death camps and moves through the Bay Area's Free Speech Movement of 1964, the birth of Beat and hippie countercultures, the Chicano labor movement in the San Joaquin Valley, the beginning of the Black Panther Party in Oakland, and some of the most radical manifestations of the women's movement, gay liberation, Red Power, and environmental activism. It also deals with artists' responses to critical issues such as censorship and capital punishment. Selz follows California's outpouring of political art into the present with responses to September 11 and the war in Iraq. In the process, Selz considers the work of artists such as Robert Arneson, Hans Burkhardt, Jerome (Caja), Enrique Chagoya, Judy Chicago, Llyn Foulkes, Rupert García, Helen and Newton Harrison, Wally Hedrick, Suzanne Lacy, Hung Liu, Peter Saul, Miriam Schapiro, Allan Sekula, Mark di Suvero, Masami Teraoka, and Carrie Mae Weems. Abundantly illustrated and beautifully produced, Art of Engagement showcases many types of media, including photographs, found objects, drawings and prints, murals, painting, sculpture, ceramics, installations, performance art, and collage. Readers will come away from the book with a historical sense of the significant role California has played in generating political art and also how the state has stimulated politically engaged art throughout the world.

A Very Important Book and A Very Important Exhibition: Art Informs Politics.......2005-11-28
Each year there are increasing numbers of fine 'catalogues', beautifully designed and illustrated and written to accompany museum and gallery exhibitions. That major book publishing companies are paying attention to the arts in this way is gratifying indeed. But when a book of such insight and scholarship and content such as ART OF ENGAGEMENT: VISUAL POLITICS IN CALIFORNIA AND BEYOND appears on the scene, it raises the entire issue of 'accompanying catalogues' to a new level. Peter Selz has created a volume of a topic that is pertinent not only to California art (though that in and of itself is rewarding in seeing the West Coast as pioneer in art form!), it is equally important to the examination of the influence art has had in response to and in alerting the public to the vagaries and contagions of political and social issues.
Selz surveys California art from 1945 to the present and in doing so addresses such issues as the genocide atrocities of WW II as recalled by artists, the development of the Bay Area and beyond Beat generation, ethnic and racial issues involving the Chicano migrant worker struggles, the Black Panther movement, Feminism, Gay Crises and Pride, and philosophical/political issues such as capital punishment, environmentalism, free speech, censorship and all the tangential issues that accompany them. The writing is probing, challenging, disturbing, uplifting and ultimately reinforcing the concept that artists are often the passionate spokesmen for the silent masses.
The artists responding to these issues are drawn from a large pool, that group including Hans Burkhardt, Robert Arneson, Enrique Chagoya, Judy Chicago, Llyn Foulkes, Rupert Garcia, Helen and Newton Harrison, Wally Hedrick, Suzanne Lacy, Hung Liu, Peter Saul, Miriam Schapiro, Allan Sekula, Mark di Suvero, Masami Teraoka, and Carrie Mae Weems. The reproductions of these powerful works are superb and the running commentary and information about the artists that accompany the images is first class. Not only paintings are represented, but also photography, murals, sculpture, performance art, drawings, installations - almost every manner or artistic statement.
This is a singularly powerful book and should be up for many awards - for content, for the exhibition it represents, and for the documentation of the immense importance California art has had on the public's awareness of political change. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, November 05

SIMPLE YET WONDERFUL CRAFT DESIGNS.......2005-08-24
It's never really too early to talk about Christmas for fanatics like myself. Even here in the midst of one of the hottest Summer seasons in recent years my thoughts are on bright Christmas lights glittering off the snow outside and the scent of pine and cinnamon inside. My wife and I have become avid crafters, making things not only for ourselves, but for friends and family as well. I never ceased to be amazed at the imagination and ingenuity that crafters show in creating items out of simple materials that can often be found right in your own home, or with a quick stop at a local craft store. My wife has always been big into a traditional country look, especially since we live smack dab in the middle of suburbia. The Country Living Handmade Christmas book is right up our alley with simple and inexpensive creations that range from the rustic to the elegant.
The book starts with simple, basic ideas for decorating your home such as various color schemes and using multiples of items such as small, pre-lit trees, wreaths, candles, plants, garlands, or holiday throw pools. Candles have become such a staple not only during the holiday season but year round and the lustrous scents of some of these can quickly get you into the holiday mood. There are a lot of great projects in this book, many which we made last year and are already making for this season.
One of the most simple is a Christmas ball tree made with a by gluing small glass Christmas balls to a Styrofoam cone, and then mounting inside a floral vase with some floral foam to help keep it in place. This is a great way to make use of old glass balls that you may not use on your tree anymore and makes for a great table centerpiece.
We collect snowmen and love making new ones. This book has several different snowmen than can be made very quickly and with items right around the house. For instance you can use old white tube socks, stuffed with foam, and adorned buttons, scraps of plaid fabric and then a tip of a colored sock for a cap. Other snowmen can be made from different sized Styrofoam balls, Paper Mache', and felt, all with their own unique looks. Patterns are included where needed.
There are lots of great projects to trim your tree with as well. A charming, rustic country design is to simply gather some twigs from your yard, and fashion them into the shapes of stars. Fashion the end points together using red twine or yarn or scraps of plaid fabric in seasonal colors. It's basically a cost-free decoration that fits the country scheme and always draws compliments from people who note your creativity!
An ingenious use of scrap fabric can be found in making Wool garland. Just cut old scrap wool or felt into 2" squares and run a strong thread through them, placing a button here and there and small Christmas bells or balls interspaced every few feet for a delightful accent on a table top tree. There's also patterns for making your own Christmas stockings out of old material as well. Now you know why we never throw anything away. Thrift stores are a great place to find old clothes for cutting up for these projects.
More and more people are making their own wrapping paper today and it makes a great change for that truly special gift for someone. You just need some colored paper which you can get on rolls from craft stores or even office supply stores, and then the paper can be adorned with painted stencil designs, rubber stamps, or sponge-painted. You can use the same techniques to make your own gift tags.
The book is loaded with brilliant, full-color photographs of each project and includes step-by-step instructions and materials list. You're really only limited by your own imagination. A truly superb book!

Customer Reviews:
Great receipes.......2007-08-16
This cookbook comes the closest to the real recipes that I have tasted, except they love to use oregano and lots of green pepper which should be ignored. Red peppers should be substituted and cumin is the favorite spice of the cubans. Once the recipes are doctored the food is outstanding. My favorites are vaca frita, oxtails, black beans (remember, do not use the oregano or the green pepper), the garbanzo bean dish with chorizo. Also remember that the type of chorizo you use will influence the dish and their are several different kinds. The Colombian type is excellent or I would stick to Goya's brand. The Colorado Bean Soup is awesome, especially if you puree it - though it is labor intensive. Remember that many of these recipes can be cooked in a pressure cooker, which is how many real cuban households make these meat dishes quickly and they come out the most tender. It would have been great if they included that method in this book but you can guesstamate the times. This works particularly well with the oxtails. You must remember also that each cuban family makes the dishes their way, so that is why you have to adjust the ingredients.
Disappointed Cuban.......2007-08-15
Just as my review for "Cuban Chicks Can Cook" this book has a whole was also a let down.
Wonderful Cookbook .......2007-07-20
This is truly a wonderful cookbook. Having never really experienced the Cuban cuisine, I was very excited when the book arrived. My wife and I have made four of the recipes: Sandwich Cubano, Picadillo (Cuban Beef Hash), Tambor de Picadillo (Beef Hash and Mashed Potatoes) and Congri Oriental (Red Beans and Rice) and the results were absolutely incredible.
Great Recipes.......2007-07-17
Being of P.Rican descent our cuisine is similar to that of Cuba. I purchased the book a few years ago and loved the recipes. I also purchased another copy recently for my son for Father's Day. If you're familar with cuban food, you'll probably make a few adjustments to some of the recipes. But all in all the recipes are very good. As far as the stories in the book, I do agree with another reviewer. With as much poverty as there is in Cuba, the authors do seem to have a nauseauting effect with all "They Were, and Had." Makes me wonder if these recipes are truly their own or the folks that worked in their home. But if you can get past their "Uppity" stories, I recommend the book. I also recommend: Daisy Cooks!: Latin Flavors That Will Rock Your World
cookbook that tells great stories.......2007-05-15
I love this book and have given it to many friends and family members over the years.
The book is easy to follow, the recipes are excellent and the stories associated with each chapter are interesting.

Book Description
An unusual memoir of explosive content written by a humble Cuban farmer who joined the guerilla headed by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in the Sierra Maestra in 1957 and went on to fight with Che in Africa and Bolivia, where Guevara found his death a year later.

Interesante libro.......2005-02-07
Book Description
Memories of Underdevelopment was the first great international success of Cuban cinema. The film provides a complex portrait of Sergio, a disaffected bourgeois intellectual who remains in Havana after the Revolution, suspended between two worlds. He can no longer accept the values of his family's reactionary past and yet boredom and the conditioning of his early life prevent him from committing himself to the new revolutionary society. Sergio's story is played out in the turbulent period of the Bay of Pigs invasion and the 1962 missile crisis, events he can only watch on his television screen or from his apartment balcony. The film, initially banned by the U.S. government as part of its trade quarantine of Cuba, was shown here five years after its original release. But American critics responded enthusiastically to it and the National Society of Film Critics bestowed an award on its director. This double volume includes the complete continuity script of Memories, as well as the complete novel, Inconsolable Memories, upon which the film is based. An interview with Alea is reproduced here, as well as documentation of the political controversy that surrounded the film in this country. Michael Chanan's introduction places the film in the context of Cuban political and cultural history. The volume also includes a biographical sketch of Alea, a chronology of the Cuban Revolution, reviews, commentary, a filmography, and a bibliography. Michael Chanan lives in England, where he teaches and writes on film. He is the author of The Cuban Image: Cinema and Cultural Politics in Cuba.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book for cinema's students.......2007-08-15
For the ones who are interested in learning more about Latin American Cinema and specifically about Tomás Gutierréz Alea. The book offers many information about the director and the context where the film Memorias del Subdesarrollo was produced with many specialized author's commentaries and interviews with the director. Add to that, it offers a translation of the script materials authorized by Alea that enriches the reading of this book and the comprehension of the film.

Book Description
Focusing on a period of history rocked by four armed movements, Lillian Guerra traces the origins of Cubans' struggles to determine the meaning of their identity and the character of the state, from Cuba's last war of independence in 1895 to the consolidation of U.S. neocolonial hegemony in 1921. Guerra argues that political violence and competing interpretations of the "social unity" proposed by Cuba's revolutionary patriot, José Martí, reveal conflicting visions of the nation--visions that differ in their ideological radicalism and in how they cast Cuba's relationship with the United States.
As Guerra explains, some nationalists supported incorporating foreign investment and values, while others sought social change through the application of an authoritarian model of electoral politics; still others sought a democratic government with social and economic justice. But for all factions, the image of Martí became the principal means by which Cubans attacked, policed, and discredited one another to preserve their own vision over others'. Guerra's examination demonstrates how competing historical memories and battles for control of a weak state explain why polarity, rather than consensus on the idea of the "nation" and the character of the Cuban state, came to define Cuban politics throughout the twentieth century.
Book Description
A happy, middle-class childhood lived in the shadows of sweeping social change and oncoming revolutionsuch was the experience of novelist Pablo Medina. In this memoir, Medina revisits his curious double world, recalling the pre-revolutionary Cuba of his first twelve years, 1948-1960. His recollections move easily from his childhood adventures to warm remembrances of family and friends to his growing awareness of the social conflicts that would ultimately send his family into exile in the United States. Medina also draws on the memories of his elders to extend his memoir back to the Cuban War of Independence and forward through the twentieth century to the fall of the Batista regime, the victory of the Revolution in 1959, and the family's growing disillusionment with the Castro regime. This first paperback edition also includes a new Epilogue describing Medina's visit to Cuba in 1999. 14 black and white photographs, preface, epilogue, glossary.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Read.......2000-07-11
Pablo Medina's memoirs of growing up in Cuba are so engaging that the reader imagines he, too, has grown up on that tropical island in the 1950's.

Book Description
In Guarding Cultural Memory, Flora González Mandri examines the vibrant and uniquely illuminating post-Revolutionary creative endeavors of Afro-Cuban women. Taking on the question of how African diaspora cultures practice remembrance, she reveals the ways in which these artists restage the confrontations between modernity and tradition.
González Mandri considers the work of the poet and cultural critic Nancy Morejón, the poet Excilia Saldaña, the filmmaker Gloria Rolando, and the artists María Magdalena Campos-Pons and Belkis Ayón. In their cultural representations these women conflate the artistic, the historical, and the personal to produce a transformative image of the black woman as a forger of Cuban culture. They achieve this in several ways: by redefining autobiography as a creative expression for the convergence of the domestic and the national; by countering the eroticized image of the mulatta in favor of a mythical conception of the female body as a site for the engraving of cultural and national conflicts and resolutions; and by valorizing certain aesthetic and religious traditions in relation to a postmodern artistic sensibility.
Placing these artists in their historical context, González Mandri shows how their accomplishments were consistently silenced in official Cuban history and culture and explores the strategies through which culturally censored memories survived-and continue to survive-in a Caribbean country purported to have integrated its Hispanic and African peoples and heritages into a Cuban identity. The picture that finally emerges is one not only of exceptional artistic achievement but also of successful redefinitions of concepts of race, gender, and nation in the face of almost insurmountable cultural odds.

The Whole Cuban Experience - Food, Family, and Fun!.......2004-01-01
Ramona Abella takes the reader on an historical and culinary journey to old Cuba that will have you wanting to travel there. I enjoyed reading the heartfelt tribute to the author's family and her Cuban homeland. Anyone with Cuban or Spanish ancestry is guaranteed to find favorite recipes from their childhood in "From Cuba With Love". The wide variety of recipes provides everything needed to experience a Cuban meal - from the main course, side dishes, desserts, and even an assortment of beverages. The Arroz con Pollo is the absolute best Chicken with Rice recipe I have found anywhere! I think I have a new `covered dish' for whenever the occasion arises. This recipe is so easy to make that it practically cooks itself. Many of the recipes are for one serving. This is terrific for creating a special meal just for myself or calculating the exact recipe needed when cooking for any size group. I also enjoyed the tips on kitchen behaviors that are very helpful in taking the `work' out of the cooking experience. Even the most experienced chef can learn from these tips that range from planning the meal to easy cleanup habits. Ramona's psychotherapist perspective also provides a very interesting insight into the role food plays in our moods and emotional behaviors. In her own words, "The affirmation of love, life, creativity, self-expression, and having lots of fun in the process, that's what cooking is all about!" This is not only a cookbook I will want to keep handy in my kitchen, but also a reflection of Cuba that I will want to read and enjoy over and over again.
Book Description
"Juan Cavila& His Childhood Memories" , is both an autobiography and a descrition of Cuban customs and manners. The book is autobiography of a chilhood -that difficult stage- specially if there is poverty around; however- notwithstanding the family's financial status- childhood is the stage when the core of a man's future character is usually forged. here you shall see the autho's childhood is not just any other childhood. The author presents -the oustanding description of the two products which proudly represente Cuba before the world: sugar, including milling and suga mills; and tobacco, including curing, storing, stripping of stems and veins, packing, and production activities, with the voice of the reader in the background.

Walt Kelly's POGO, a satirical masterpiece commonly acknowledged as one of the three greatest comic strips ever published, is finally back in print in this series from Fantagraphics Books!
Customer Reviews:
More hilarity.......2000-07-25
I'm considerably younger than Pogo, I don't recall ever seeing this strip in the paper and what a shame that is!
Young and old alike can laugh at this stuff. The political commentary never distracts from the fact that comic strips are supposed to be funny. It's hard to explain all the things that go on in ONE strip. Characters in the background are as much fun as the main story. So many good things to say about Pogo!
