Book Description
Everything architects need to master AutoCAD(r)'s exciting modeling and rendering features.
When it comes to modeling and rendering with AutoCAD R13 and R14, this user-friendly book/CD package makes it easy to generate outstanding results. While it equips AutoCAD novices with the knowledge and skills required to create polished architectural drawings, models, and renderings, it also offers experienced AutoCAD users the information they need to use all of the program's outstanding new modeling, rendering, and animation features.
Rather than just explaining how the software works, Branko Kolarevic guides you step by step through increasingly complex exercises built around Andrea Palladio's Renaissance masterpiece, "Villa Rotonda." Coverage is divided into four sections covering 2-D drawing, 3-D modeling, rendering, and animation. Each section begins with an introduction to key theoretical concepts that is followed by a series of skill-building tutorials demonstrating these principles in action.
To help shorten the AutoCAD learning curve even further, the enclosed CD-ROM provides a library of all of the drawing, modeling, rendering, and animation steps detailed in the book. The CD is flexibly designed to allow users the freedom to focus on the supplied tutorials or to create their own designs based on the techniques described in the book.
Together, this book and the accompanying CD-ROM give architects and students the ability to explore the full potential of the most popular architectural CAD software in use today.

perfect book for architects.......1999-08-16
Within a week I was making my first 3d architectural model with good results. This book is very good and avoids to be general: it is focused on architecture and that is a relief after seeing a lot of books which explain autocad features with examples from all disciplines (mechanics, etc), which tend to confuse time-needing architects and draftmen. I recommended it in full.
The tutorial about shadow rendering is good but I had some trouble getting the right result (Acad R14). There is a bug in Autocad render module when MS Windows is set to international settings, I lost a couple of days finding out the solution to this problem. I found it at the technical support page of Autodesk. In the book there is no mention to it.

Beautiful,informative.......2002-08-01
I started watching "Changing Rooms" a few months ago when we switched to digital cable...and was hooked immediately.I like all of the designers on the show, and am amazed at the make-overs they achieve in two days.(same as the American version"Trading Spaces.")
In this book,Linda explains clearly how colors are used to create certain moods, and atmosphere. The book is filled with lavish examples of how color can be used, and it also gives you an idea of what your particular likes/dislikes are color-wise.All of the "Changing Rooms" books are very well-written,and if you have a desire to create a new look in your home, this book, and all the others will be a huge help.
...a great place for anyone to start!.......2002-04-20
For some funny reason, when I first checked out my new channel BBC American on the new super cable, I found this little show. And, I was hooked ever since. I don't like home improvement shows because most of the time they fix things that I will never do, like rebuild a classic barn with 15 carpenters and a 50k budget. Hey, I live in the city, that is never gonna happen to me. 'Changing Rooms' and their designer Linda Barker actually work on projects that can be accomplished by the average schmo, like me. And, these books, take you through step-by-step. It is a total DIY approach. Not all the designs are fluffy or build around gaudy themes (though some are, usually for fun.) Most are fun and basic ideas that can be manufactured with a small budget (like the show.) From reading through this book and Linda's 'Finishing Touches' book, I now have a much better eye for what I can do with my space, and knowing that is will not cost much in the end. Which is what true home improvement shows should be all about! If you are looking for new colors or want to redo an entire home, this is a great place to start for inspiration!

Linda is the best.......2001-11-25
Linda's book on Colour and the Changing Rooms book (as well another book by her called "Finishing Touches") are fabulous....they're practical, give great info and give you inspiring ideas that you could envision in your own home.
Linda is a master of creativity and innovation -- she comes up with ways to use things you'd never think of and takes you through the steps of how to create them in your own home. She's one of my favorite designers on the BBC America show, "Changing Rooms," and her books are definitely worth the money.

educational and interesting.......2007-01-12
My nine year old son spends hours reading this book. He has several from the Eyewitness series. The pictures are detailed and the written passages are packed with very interesting information. They are definitely for a more advanced reader or to read to your children. I'm learning from the books as well.
Book Description
Descended from West African kings and healers, raised in the turbulence of Guinea in the 1960s, Kadiatou Diallo was married off at the age of thirteen and bore her first child when she was sixteen. Twenty-three years later, that child–a gentle, innocent young man named Amadou Diallo–was gunned down without cause on the streets of New York City. Now Kadi Diallo tells the astonishing, inspiring story of her life, her loss, and the defiant strength she has always found within.
Customer Reviews:
interesting.......2004-07-13
An interesting story of a mother, her history, her life, her struggles and success. Being a daughter, a wife, a mother, a provider. I enjoyed the book. I find though that the book was more about her and less about Amadou. SO if your intent is to read about Amadou there is not too much. I recommend it though. GOd Bless her and her family. She is an inspiration to the African (muslim) woman and others too. I feel her pain as I am also a mother.
41 Shots.......2004-04-20
A lot of folks like the Bruce Springsteen song "41 shots" but have no idea what it is about. It is about Amadou Diallo, a young man from Guinea who was shot that many times (long after he was "down") by NYPD when he went for his wallet to provide identification to them. They say they thought he was going for a weapon.
This book is heartbreaking and heartwarming, written by his mother with sentiments only a mother could feel and only Ms. Diallo could express. She was recently interviewed on Pacifica radio and I was impressed with her articulate and thoughtful responses to the questions asked her after the settlement she had recieved from the City of NY.
Amadou was not a gangbanger or punk. He was a hardworking, thoughtful and intelligent man with a tightly knit family who loved him and wanted him to succeed in the "Land of Oz" like so many others, like my own forefathers who came from Europe. I wonder if this "murder by cop" would have occurred if he were caucasian.
I'm hoping that those 41 shots will again be heard around the world in the voice of his mother. Shame (again) on the NYPD.
A Motherýs Story.......2003-09-18
MY HEART WILL CROSS THIS OCEAN is Kadiatou Diallo's story. In her memoir, she rejects the label of herself as the bereaved mother of her slain son, Amadou Diallo and defines herself as a woman of courage who triumphs over adversity. She shares her life and history in vibrant, lyrical detail. As I read her
words, I felt like she spoke them to me and I was lulled into a comfortable trance by what felt like her soothing Guinean dialect.
Ms. Diallo shares her humble beginnings as a child in Guinea, Africa and gives a picture of her family and the political climate of that region at the time. By telling her story, she tells Amadou's story. Despite the rich cultural text and vivid detail of her youth and growth into womanhood, I read with
baited breath because I knew eventually the story would arrive at February 3, 1999. The day that her courage and strength would be thoroughly tested.
MY HEART WILL CROSS THIS OCEAN is a mother's story, it is poignant and filled with cultural details. It movingly chronicles the life of Kadiatou Diallo, a woman who should not be pitied, but heralded for her courage and honesty in this portrayal.

A Modern Griot's Story.......2003-08-17
When Ms. Diallo's parents and family where pleased to receive the visit of the griot in their house, and his (the griot's) recounting of Fulah history lifted the hearts of the everyone in the compound and beyond. Little did she realize that, she would be doing same through print. A very interesting tale of personal conflicts of modern African women of being true to tradition, religion and still in step with the modern world. At the same time that you want to give something up you do not want to do that.
The tender truth that everyone should know.......2003-07-24
Anyone who knows the story of Amadou Diallo's fate at the hands of the NYC Police, does not know the story until you read this book. In the days and weeks following Amadou's death, the media frenzy revealed very little about Amadou's life and family short of the presumptive image of an African immigrant struggling to earn a living with little education and few family ties. Nothing could be further from the truth. This beautifully written account of Kadiatou's own story and her relationship to her son Amadou, reveals more of his character than any news report ever did. To understand Amadou, you must understand Kadiatou. Her story, and his, humbles the reader. The words are prose, the images are stunning; it is a visual read. Even if you know very little of the tragedy that occurred in 1999, this is a must read.

Both sides of the Navy during WWII.......2007-06-11
I read this book in preparation for a sea power class I was going to take in graduate school. The author has a well planned format for his work which keeps continuity by alternating Atlantic and Pacific theaters in accordance with the timeline of events. Morison covers the major battles in depth and mentions the minor skirmishes which are relevant to the big picture. By reading Two Ocean War, readers are able to better understand the course of events for naval forces during the war which are often overlook in favor of the `more popular' land battles.

Repetitive and getting negative.......2007-08-23
Colors Aloft! is the 15th or so book in the Bolitho series and this one particulatly seems to be very humdrum. The timeframe for the story is right after the ending of the Peace of Amiens and the resumption of active warfare between France and Britain. During the peace, France was building its navy up while Britain released most of its sailors and retired its ships. So, when the war resumes, Britain is struggling. This explains why Vice Admiral Bolitho is put in command of a small squadron and sent to the Med to reinforce Nelson's blockade of France. This also explains why there are so few trained and qualified seamen on the ships in the small squadron.
This setting is the norm for this series and does lead to an interesting duel of wits between Bolitho and his arch-enemy: Admiral Jobert. The higlights of this book include the cat and mouse game being played between these two warriors and, of course, the individual battles between ships. Kent is a master of describing the roar of the cannons and the clash of steel as ship meets ship in that age of sail. If Kent would have stuck with these parts, he would have had a well-written story on his hands.
However, Kent put in several other things which take away from the quality of the story in my opinion. These things include: Marital discord in the Bolitho family; instantaneous love; Bolitho experiencing hate and despair; and Bolitho's feeling of approaching doom. Let's address them one by one.
Only two books after Dick marries Belinda and only a book after he finds out that he has a daughter, Bolitho is having severe second thoughts about his marriage. Supposedly, Belinda is suggesting that he leave Falmouth and set up residence in London to further his career - maybe even take on work at the admiralty. This causes Bolitho no small amount of bother and even causes him to re-evaluate whether the marriage is a mistake! The book goes so far as to hint broadly that Bolitho is still very much in love with Cheney and Belinda is merely there because she looks like Cheney but is a different person. Given how little we are told about the women in these stories, it is impossible for me to understand this wild change in outlook.
As has happened several times in these books, a boy meets a girl, and within hours they profess undying and eternal love to each other. In several previous instances it was Bolitho who had gorgeous women practically fling themselves at him. In this book it is Captain Keen who saves a convicted woman from being flogged and immediately falls in love with her. Of course, she falls in love with him as well and many pages in the book describe the glances they exchange when they meet etc. Kent is not good at describing romances and this detracts from the book. Of course, the romance is useful as a plot device in creating a situation where Bolitho and Keen and their ship are taking care of some of the complications that develop due to this romance and therefore are not present when Jobert breaks out of France and creates havoc - including killing off Captain Inch!
Up until now, Bolitho is always described as a kind and understanding man whom the crews love to follow because he is not cruel or vindictive. In almost every second book Kent makes sure to tell us of how Bolitho cannot stand the flogging punishments that were common in those days. In this book there is a significant change with Bolitho insisting that several French ships by utterly destroyed and other bystanders be harmed. Completely out of character!
Bolitho also gets injured in this book. Again. As is usual, he happens to have a great doctor on his ship who happens to have unusual herbs picked in the Carribean for just the sort of injury that Bolitho suffers. None of that is important however. The important part is the Bolitho is feeling a sense of doom and actively seeks death. Maybe this is tied to his depression over his unraveling marriage, or maybe it is related to his advancing age, but these thoughts and action are completely contrary to the Dick Bolitho that we have known in the past.
To summarize, this is a book that is about the middle of the pack in terms of how it fits in the projection of Bolitho's career. The great naval battles are there as are the problems of command. The book is marred by Kent ineptitude in describing romantic entanglements and has turned to the darker side of the personalities involved. On the other hand, we get to see more of Adam Bolitho (name now changed) and catch a glimpse of Rear Admiral Herrick who makes a cameo appearance toward the end of the book. This one is forgettable and I am looking forward to reading the next one.
Colours Aloft.......2000-04-25
The fragile peace between France and Britian was broken in 1803. During the Peace of Amies the British government ran down the fleet in number of ship and men while the French continued to build up their navy. In his last battle ViceAdmiral Sir Richard Bolitho had captured the French admiral Jobert's ship the Argonaute. Now Bolitho raises his flag at the foremast of this prize ship. He resumes command with only a few of his experienced crew. He is short of experienced seamen and has a reduced squadron. Bolitho is beset by depressing thoughts: problems at home with his wife who wants him to leave the sea and assume duty in London;doubts whether he will return from this combat; responsibility to lead his inexperienced crew to victory and safety. Hs main task is to catch the French if they break out of ports and destroy them in the Mediteranean. His prime enemy is Rear Admiral Jobert whose ship Bolitho now commands. He is a formidable wily enemy who is out for revenge. It will take all of Bolitho's skill and ingenuity to defeat him. Kent draws a vivid puicture of life in the British navy. The accounts of the battles are graphic and sirring. This reader had the sense of experiencing the events firsthand. The book is wellwritten;the characters finely drawn and human;the action swift. Highly recommenced for any reader of naval fiction....
