Although Antoine Predock's practice is international, his roots are in the American southwest. His architecture draws from the elemental forces in any location, but in the desert it draws from the monolithic topography, expansive cerulean sky, and sparse geometric flora. Known for the way he incorporates references to the elemental forces--air, earth, fire, water--Predock's bold, fluid structures evoke the mythic nature that is rooted in regional culture and forms.
This is the first book to put together all of the extraordinary houses designed by Antoine Predock. Each of the twelve remarkable private houses featured here--ten from Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, and two from California--harmoniously blend with their landscape in ways for which Predock is now so renowned. Predock is the George Jetson of our day. He ia a prime speciman of a spaceman. The man knows space. This is not so much a review of the product I received from Amazon as it is a prelude to a Predock. As you move yourself toward the crafting of your space and before your space craft blasts off, go for a test drive with Predock. He will put the rocket in your proverbial pocket. He will put the capital D on your dreamhouse. Predock is not the product but all props to Amazon for hooking me up with the man and his work. I am feeling deeply satisfied and inspired.
a stunning book.......2001-02-23
This is a beautifully produced book with wonderful photographs that capture the essence of Predock's work, the magical interplay of light and shadow. A characteristic of Predock residences is the interdigitation of the house and the land so that it appears as if the house almost grew out of and/or grew into the earth (pp.46-7, 82-3). The siting of the Boulder House (pp.46-7)against the majestic barren New Mexico environ is bold and assertive but at the same time is pitched in perfect harmony with its surroundings(pp.38-9). It embodies the primordial purpose of a domicile, a shelter from the harsh elements of nature and a haven where the inhabitant inside feels snug and protected. A unique feature of Predock's buildings is his almost metaphysical approach to design so that the structure seems to morph into a kind of mythic place, evocative of some distant place/ancient times/primordial culture. This is exemplified by the Fuller house as illustrated on pages 86-7. The Fuller house is classical without appearing derivative. It is timeless in its suggested monumentality. Predock's designs should withstand the vagaries of time. Though he is a gifted master of modernism, he is a universal architect of all times and all places because of his almost mystical reverence for the land and his profound appreciation of the "geological strata" of culture encoded in the place where his building is situated. Because he also understands stage craft from his background in dance performance, he is a clever stage master and understands the emotional impact of well choreographed presentations. (See the boulders spilling down to the pool on pages 100-1.) He is also a brilliant colorist, as exemplified by the elegantly tinted exteriors of his houses which blend in so seamlessly with the background landscape without the artifice of mimicking nature (pp. 86-7, 104-5, 120-1). This book does an admirable job of capturing these special attributes of Preodock's designs.

Great Learning for Young Minds!.......2000-11-20
As a youth and into my adulthood I've loved art. And found this book to be a wonderful learning tool for the young minds of those that we bring into this world to help mold them into a fine appreciation of all the beauty that is around us. As are the rest of the books in this series, 'Impressionists' makes them familiar with these artists and perhaps their skills that they too could relate and pour out of themselves, no matter what their age. My twin daughters, now 3 1/2 years old, still love that book. And have recognized the pictures else where. That's always amazing, to see their little minds work! I think that these books make teaching our children very enjoyable in a natural, simple way.

Barnes Foundation French Paintings.......2005-09-01
We discovered the Barnes Foundation while on vacation in Philadelphia. Dr. Barnes amassed an amazing art collection, in both depth and breadth from the 1920s-1950s. Our main interest were the Impressionists, and with over 100, we were impressed. We were also impressed by the number of French citizens that were visiting the Foundation to view the artworks.
This book does a very good job of conveying the art that he brought together. We would recommend this book to anyone that wants to have a complete knowledge of French Impressionists. It will merely whet your appetite to visit the Foundation and see it for yourselves.

Impressionism makes an Impression.......2007-03-12
From Bazille to Whistler, the 60 masterpieces are wonderfully drawn for young imaginations to fill-in with color! For some, this will be a great introduction to art; for others it may inspire the walk up a path to beautiful art. But all the young people who are lucky enough to have this book will be reminded of it from time-to-time for the rest of their lives.

This book was splendid! It was georgeously created, and it the care the author and editor put into the making of this book shows on every page. The thing that makes this book unique is that every painting is shown IN COLOR--not black and white sections taking up half the book, etc. The paintings are also put on the page in a way that makes you focus on the genius of each and every one. It makes you realize that Renoir truly was a genius in his time. He was an original and stylish painter, and this book is a great tribute to him and his art---as well as a book that anyone, with art history knowledge or not, would enjoying having on both his/her coffee table and as a book to read and treasure!

Should be in any art lover's book collection!.......2001-07-25
As this book will prove to anyone who doubts it, Paul Cezanne is definitely the Father of Modern Art. Of course, that is ironic because Cezanne was said to be against many of the principles of modern art.
That said, this book is a wonderful source for art history lovers like me. There are many beautiful reproductions of paintings in this book, spanning Cezanne's entire career, that are ALL IN COLOR. And that makes the book quite a gem on its own account. However, not only are the paintings in color, but also since this is a tall, wide book, the paintings take up a page, even a whole page, if need be. The book also explores Cezanne's personality--how it affected his art, as well as his life. It is not serious reading, by it will enable one to better appreciate his art more. This book, despite only being $..., is priceless. It will probably be worth much more in coming years. There is no excuse not to buy this book if you love art history--I know you'll enjoy it immensely!!!

Vilem Kriz wa born in Czecholovakia. Jaromir Funke was his teacher and friend. In 1948 he become an exile in Paris. Knew many artists there but lived in poverty with his Czech wife and son. 1950's emigrated to USA. Janitor, assitant to Dorothea Lange, professor at The College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA. Died 1996.
Tapes with his last interview (Berkeley 5/1996) are deposited in Prague library Libri Prohibiti. 2 hours in Czech. Talks about photography, artists, Europe, America....

Czech photographer in America.......2004-01-07
When asked why he've made only few pictures during the first decade of his exile in America, his answer was: "I didn't like what I've seen."
His exile began in 1948 in Paris. To start fire in the stoves during witer he often used his negatives.
Last interview (made in Berkeley 5/23/1996) with his fascinating insights is in the Prague library Libri Prohibiti. Cassette tapes 2 hours in Czech.
