Book Description

The Buen Retiro, a royal retreat and pleasure palace, was built for Philip IV on the outskirts of Madrid in the 1630s. With its superb display of paintings by Vel‡zquez and other contemporary artists, the palace became a showcase for the art and culture of Spain's Golden Age. A Palace for a King, first published to wide acclaim in 1980, provided a pioneering total history of the construction, decoration, and uses of a major royal palace, emphasizing the relationship of art and politics at a critical moment in European history. In this extensively revised edition, the authors review the scholarship produced on different aspects of the history of the palace and its decoration over the past quarter century. A number of new, previously unpublished illustrations have been added, and many of the plates are now reproduced in color.

5 out of 5 stars How can a book involving Philip IV *not* get five stars?.......1999-06-20

On March 31, 1621, Philip III, third Habsburg ruler of Spain, met a premature death, reportedly clutching in panic at the same crucifix his father and grandfather had held on their deathbeds generations before. His son and heir, the sixteen-year-old Philip IV, succeeded to what is now known collectively as the Spanish Empire - a vast conglomeration of lands and people whose progressive decline as a political entity has long remained a basic assumption amongst twentieth century historians and yet whose cultural vitality has given its period the title of "The Golden Age of Spanish Art." The accession of Philip IV seemed to inaugurate a new era of reform after the previous regime's mindless inactivity and self-interested grandee domination. As the contemporary playwright Tirso de Molina remarked, "New architects acceded with the new king."

This premise serves as the central metaphor in A Palace for a King. Elliott, a historian, and Brown, an art historian, examine both the literal and political architecture of the reign, charting the complicated, often surprising interrelation between art and politics. The palace of the title is the Buen Retiro - an intended recreational center built for Philip IV with astonishing speed during the years 1630-33, left largely in neglect after the 1640's, and finally decimated by French and English troops during the Napoleonic wars. In reconstructing the circumstances surrounding its construction and initial occupation, Brown and Elliott attempt to furnish the reader with a "total" history of the Spanish Habsburg court during its penultimate representative's first twenty years of rule.

The scope of the book is immense. In a prose that is precise and elegant, if at times monotonous, it describes the political and economic issues of the day as well as the relationship between the continuously vacillating king and his powerful minister, the Count-Duke of Olivares, who until 1643 held the true control over Spanish government. It then goes on to analyze the palace of the Buen Retiro itself, exploring the process of palace-building and the symbolism of the palace as a repository of the values of the ruling class. Simultaneously, it looks at Spanish baroque painting, theater, and architecture and their inextricable connection to the court at Madrid, which, itself, was in so many ways like a giant theater. Elliott's inquiry and interpretation of the troubles besetting the institution that was then called the monarquía española and of the role played by Olivares makes for particularly rewarding reading.

The book appears to be extremely well-researched and provides an abundance of evidence from primary sources as varied as confidential memoranda, secret expense accounts and drawings of architectural plans; the endnotes alone constitute twenty of its almost three hundred pages. However, it is its very wealth of references and information that also lies at the core of its greatest weakness. Too often, the text becomes bogged down in statistics, where apparently meaningless figures about who paid whom and whose plot of land was where replace any real insights. The authors seem to become trapped in unneeded details, losing track of the larger picture that they originally intended to convey. As a result, in certain chapters, more attention than necessary is devoted to the actual logistics of building the palace and, consequently, not enough to the palace's political, social, and economic implications.

Still, aside from these slightly irritating flaws, Brown and Elliott's work remains a highly absorptive and very informative look at subject that has thus far remained sadly underrepresented amongst the scientific community. The sheer extent of the information to be found makes this book a valuable resource for anyone interested in the period, while the distressing lack of similar studies makes it absolutely essential for those at all curious about Spain's architectural history. It is, in my mind, a fascinating complement and worthy companion to R.A. Stradling's landmark Philip IV and the Government of Spain.

          Book Description

Dr. Peter Gott combines the empathy of an old-fashioned family doctor with the outspoken fervor of a patients' rights advocate in his nationally syndicated column, “Dr. Gott.” A general internist in practice in Connecticut since 1966, Dr. Gott responds to readers' medical questions with sensitivity and accuracy. His daily column has been syndicated by Newspaper Enterprise Association since 1984. Dr. Gott devotes six days each week to answering readers' medical questions, and one day each week to his own health-related commentary.

2 out of 5 stars Gott has done a lot of good work, but..........2007-06-26

...he is not a 21st century physician. His "No Flour, No Sugar" copy of Atkins and South Beach proves it. (Those theories have been thoroughly debunked and assigned to the SNAKE OIL section of health remedies).

Having said those harsh words, I should emphasize that Gott is a rural doctor who clearly cares about his patients -- no small thing in today's healthcare maze.

He is obviously an ordinary, country doctor; how he became a household name is sort of a mystery, attributable to good old American capitalism, I presume.

          5 out of 5 stars Great information!.......2007-05-15

My grandmother is 89 years old, healthy as a horse and twice as independent, and swears by any info given out by Dr. Gott. This book presents his advice in the same format as his column; letters from people with Dr. Gott's advice. Great presentation and great info. And if it's good enough for Grandma, its bound to help the rest of us youngsters.

An unabashed celebration of the wholeness of single life lived within the will of God. Using the lessons of Bible characters, the author shows singles how to find abundance in life instead of letting it slip away while waiting for marriage.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE.......2006-11-23

I bought this book 5 years ago and it has changed my life. I was searching for a great guy (I'm 28 now) and the book taught me to search for a great life. After reading it I went on my first vacation alone and learned that life is just as enjoyable with great family and friends as it is with a significant other. It gave me strength and courage I didnt know I had in me... I got a job opportunity to move 9500 miles away and never thought twice about making a move from New York to Singapore - it really gave me such independance and joy and although if I met a great guy I would embrace a relationship but I don't search for it or feel like less of a person because I'm not in one. I definitely recommend this book!

2 out of 5 stars Moderately helpful read, But much better options out there........2006-02-22

This book puts emphasis on human effort to run the race/strive/pursue the prize, etc. rather than emphasis on the sovereign grace of a holy God who works all things according to his Glory. Widder does write about the fact that God, unlike Santa, gives only GOOD gifts -- ie, no "coal" in our stockings, even if we are likely to perceive our singleness in that way.

There are, in my opinion, FAR better options available to singles, single Christian women in particular.

Example: Short booklet "Singled out for Him" by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, the relatively new release with accompanying DVD "Sex and the Supremacy of Christ" edited/compiled by John Piper, and "Did I Kiss Marriage Goodbye" by Carolyn McCulley (member of Joshua Harris' church).

Also helpful, check out Carolyn's internet "Blog" -- gives lots of regular articles pertaining to singleness; that will be a better resource, also, than this well-intentioned book.

          http://www.solofemininity.blogs.com/

Another brief comment: This book is very helpful, perhaps, to "beginners" on the journey towards contentment in singleness. Anyone, however, with a deeper understanding of God's grace will find it elementary at best.

          1 out of 5 stars I've read better.......2006-01-10

Even though I love my 30-something single life, I am always on the hunt for good encouragement as, let's be honest, it can still be lonely...and the older I get, the more I feel that biological clock ticking! I probably own at least a dozen or so of these types of books that have either been given to me, or that I've picked up on my own. This was one I picked up myself and rather than finding encouragement, it actually depressed me.

There were some good points I thought she had, and I know that many have probably found it encouraging, but overall it was not practical for me and the way I have approached my life and my current God-given gift of singleness.

A book like this I think should speak to all, and instead I think it surely speaks to some, but it certainly didn't to me or any of my friends (who I also had read it as I was afraid that maybe my take on it was "just me"). I kept it on my shelf for awhile, but eventually ended up getting rid of it completely.

There are so many of these kinds of books out there right now, I would highly recommend picking up another one and leave this as one of the last reads you do. One that I would highly recommend is "Table for One: The Savvy Girl's Guide to Singleness" by Camerin Courtney.

5 out of 5 stars You MUST pick up a copy of the book.......2002-11-01

This is by far the best book I've ever read. I get so tired of hearing people say to me "God has someone special for you" or "What? You don't have a boyfriend? You're not married?!?" Why continue searching for your "better half" when you can live the life that God has for you. I can't tell you all of it. You have to purchase a copy for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A DEEPER ENCOURAGEMENT FOR SINGLES.......2002-07-02

WOW! Wendy does a great job of honestly going deeper on a difficult subject. Although she doesn't trivialize the pain involved in living with unmet Godly desires, she does uncover the fact that these struggles aren't new to mankind. This is a deeper bite than Table For One, but just as good. Not for the faint of heart--be ready to wrestle with God. Huge encouragement for singles. Even though the author is apparently young and comes from an amazingly supportive family she is no stranger to lonliness. Excellant job helping us stay focused on God. Hard to be disgruntled with your life when you have an attitude of gratitude, even if this isn't the life we had hoped for.

4 out of 5 stars strong family drama .......2006-09-02

In Toronto after being fired from an investment bank, Gary Holloway takes up yoga as a means to release his rage and frustration. Six months later he has found his enlightened side, which mean divorcing his wife Lauren and deserting their fourteen years old twin daughters Jamie and Devin to continue his spiritual journey with his instructor Melanie.

One year later, Lauren still remains in shock and struggles to adapt to the abandonment and being a single mom to teenage twins. The three female Holloways have given up their affluent lifestyle, much of their relationships with family and friends and their home as they relocate to a working class neighborhood. Their next door neighbor, single mom of six year old Shelley, private investigator Erin Karmeli offers the fallen upper class elitist a trainee job while diner owner Murphy Jones offers friendship. Lauren adjusts to her new surroundings and makes friends. However, Erin, who does not fear death, has one apprehension, Shelley's wellbeing, which forces the three Holloways to lovingly change even further.

HER BETTER HALF is a strong family drama starring fully developed likable characters who seem real because of relationships such as the friendship between Lauren and Erin as the newcomer believes the very tall ultra thin neighbor initially was a hooker then a drug addict before learning the truth as her pal becomes a loving sister to her. The other relationships also appear genuine so that this tear jerker makes for a strong contemporary fiction tale that fans will fully appreciate.

                Book Description

While the men of Akron busied themselves laying the economic, legal, and industrial foundations, their mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters were equally busy weaving the benevolent and cultural fabric of the growing city. It was pattern replicated in scores of industrial centers across the nation. This is the story of how it happened in Akron, Ohio. Akron's "Better Half": Women's and the Humanization of the City, 1825-1925 looks at how women brought much-needed services to the city, created health institutions that continue today, and built Akron's cultural and literary foundations. Akron women seldom acted alone; they preferred to work with like-minded women through clubs, organizations, and societies, some of which still survive today. This book covers the first 100 years of Akron's history, a time of enormous growth and change in the city. It was also a time of enormous energy and activism on the part of the women's clubs. It is a different perspective on the city, its history, and its institutions.

The book is easy to read. It has 37 chapters. The first is on ethics, the second on loyaly, and the third etiquette. A good way to lead into the subject. Chapter 9 is on finding better jobs where you are. Sooner or later most people change jobs. If you have been in an industry for a long time you may have a lot of people ask you to be a reference or to help. Whether you know it or not your probably part of someones network. This is a pretty basic book but it can be a real help both for your own efforts and in trying to help others. Even if your usually doing the hiring it doesn't hurt to review these ideas.
