    Book Description

Old Turkic is the earliest, directly attested Turkic language. This original work describes the grammar of Old Turkic.

The language is documented in inscriptions in the 'runic' script in Mongolia and the Yenisey basin, from the seventh to the tenth century; in Uygur manuscripts from Chinese Turkestan in Uygur, and in runic and other scripts (comprising religious - mostly Buddhist -, legal, literary, medical, folkloric, astrological and personal material), from the ninth to the thirteenth century; and in eleventh-century Qarakhanid texts, mostly in Arabic writing.

All aspects of Old Turkic are dealt with: phonology, subphonemic phenomena and morphophonology, and the way these are reflected in the various scripts, derivational and inflectional morphology, grammatical categories, word classes, syntax, textual and extra-textual reference and other means of coherence, lexical fields, discourse types, phraseology as well as stylistic, dialect and diachronic variation.

Girls, girls, girls. And well-endowed boys. They're the subjects of Thomas Ruff Nudes, a book of photographs by a well-known German artist best known for his searching images of faces, night skies and architecture. The new photographs were pulled off Internet porn sites and enlarged, colored and blurred by the artist. The fascinating thing about these nudes is the way the indistinct tumble of imagery replicates the physical sensation of sex. Everything is hazy, incomplete, replete with longing--a giddy carnival of orifices and sex organs. Skin is suffused with the blush of sexual arousal. Women offer themselves to unseen men and to one another. Some might say that Ruff is "making a statement" about the easy availability of pornography. Nonsense. He is documenting, in his painterly way, the elemental human urges that attract us to each other's flesh. The most interesting images in the book are the most abstract, revealing sexual appetite as the eternal pursuit of another body's knobs and holes. Accompanying the photographs is an earthy, supposedly fictional, fragment by the controversial French novelist Michel Houellebecq. The narrator reminisces about the years when he and his wife visited sex clubs on the Riviera. He writes of "dark rooms where people make love without choosing partners, submerged in the flux of tactile sensation." This is the world of Ruff's most successful photographs, a place where the staginess of pornography is transformed into the realm of pure desire. --Cathy Curtis

        Book Description

Thomas Ruff (b. 1958), known for his deadpan portraits and gorgeous views of the night sky and architecture, is one of Germany's leading contemporary artist/photographers. Among his recent work is an exploration of the internet, that parallel visual universe teeming with sexuality of every flavor and variety. He gathers from that virtual playground erotic and often pornographic photographs that he subsequently manipulates in his computer, making beautiful--and disturbing--artwork from visual material that, for better or worse, is probably more abundant than any other type of image in our world today.

The pictures, which are graphic and abstract at the same time, are accompanied by an excerpt from a forthcoming novel by controversial French writer Michel Houellebecq, whose work is similarly influenced by the sex industry. Reviewing the series in the Village Voice, Jerry Saltz wrote: "Ruff may think these images are analytic or objective, but they're also sweetly, luxuriantly visual...Sex slips into something ravishingly, optically comfortable, and these everyday, off-world images morph into parapaintings from the Planet Love."

5 out of 5 stars BEST ART EVER!.......2007-05-10

I usually prefer design(s) but this just blew me away. The visual force of the pics is unlike anything I`ve seen in art.

For me, it's about basics: modern fertility/sexuality icons/ideals, art as a decorative object and what is Beautiful. This is.

Haven`t spent money this well in a long time.

1 out of 5 stars Out of Focus.......2006-05-31

If you are into photos that are hard to see and blurry images, this is the book for you. When they say out of focus, take it literally. My book is new, and will definetely be for sale ASAP. Don't waste time or money unless you want to feel like you have coke bottle glasses on. Leave this one alone.

        Book Description

During the late 1960s and 70s, a paradigm shift occurred within visual culture: photography and the moving image were absorbed into critical art practices. In particular, these mediums were used to record ephemeral or performative events and to render visible conceptual systems or to question the supposed objectivity of representation itself. This volume focuses primarily on artworks from the last decade and proposes that the extensive use of reproducible mediums in today's art has its roots in an earlier formative period. By the end of the 70s, many artists turned to photography as a vehicle through which to critique photographic representation and to subvert an art system premised on the notion of the original. While this practice came to define much of the 80s postmodern art, its legacy for the 90s was essentially the license to indulge in photographic fantasy, image construction, and cinematic narrative. Artists working today freely manipulate their representations of the empirical world or invent entirely new cosmologies. They process their subject matter through conceptual systems or use digital processes to alter their images. Some directly intervene in the environment, subtly shifting components of the found world and establishing their quiet presence in it; others fabricate entire architectural environments for the camera lens. This current state of the arts and its recent history are represented via more than 150 works by 55 artists, including Nam June Paik, Kara Walker, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, Ana Mendieta, Bruce Nauman, Robert Smithson, Christian Boltanski, Sophie Calle, Fischli & Weiss, Ann Hamilton, Robert Mapplethorpe, Annette Messager, Cindy Sherman, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Elger Esser, Andreas Gursky, Candida H fer, Thomas Ruff, J rge Sasse, Thomas Struth, Olafur Eliasson, Roni Horn, Gabriel Orozco, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Matthew Barney, Gregory Crewdson, Anna Gaskell, Sam Taylor-Wood, Oliver Boberg, James Casebere, Thomas Demand, Vanessa Beecroft, Wolfgang Tillmans, Patty Chang, Trisha Donnelly, Stan Douglas, Pierre Huyghe, William Kentridge, Steve McQueen, Shirin Neshat, John Pilson and Gillian Wearing.

This book accompanies a 2003-2004 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. It begins with 30 pages of essays: "Introduction," "Picturing Movement, Past and Present," and "Art Photography after Photography." These essays do an excellent job of placing the exhibition in context. In addition, they mention works in a smaller 2002-2003 version of the exhibition in New York, which included some artists (e.g., Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik, and Robert Smithson) not represented in the Bilbao exhibition.

The body of the book ("Catalogue Entries") consists of text about and photographs or video stills by 50 artists in alphabetical order (Marina Abramovic through Jane and Louise Wilson). Each of the artists is given up to one page of text. For most of the artists there is only one page of images, but Francis Alys, Matthew Barney, Miles Coolidge, Gregory Crewdson, Rineke Dijkstra, Olafur Eliasson, Peter Fischli / David Weiss, Anna Gaskell, Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Andreas Gursky, Ann Hamilton, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Mariko Mori, Aika Noguchi, Catherine Opie, Gabriel Orozco, Pipilotte Rist, Michal Rovner, Thomas Struth, Sam Taylor-Wood, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Kara Walker have at least three pages. Some works by Dijkstra, Gaskell, Goldin, Gursky, Anthony Hernandez, Manglano-Ovalle, Mori, Orozco, Rovner, Thomas Ruff, Taylor-Wood, and Tillmans are not reproduced in the book but were in the exhibition (per the list on pages 205-216). Virtually all of the works are dated 1990-2002; some images of Goldin's were taken in the 1970s and 1980s but were published later. For each artist, 2-4 "selected readings" are listed in the back of the book.

The photography is mostly great, but the book does not really do the videos justice for a couple reasons. First, there are not enough stills to give the reader a good idea of the course of each video. I would have preferred a larger number of smaller-sized stills. Second, the one-page-of-text limit for each video artist gives the same amount of space for the massive Cremaster series by Barney as for a three-minute video by Patty Chang. You'll have to travel to Spain to fully appreciate the videos, but meanwhile buy the book from Amazon.com!

          Book Description

All fields of contemporary Western life are captured by the lens of Thomas Ruff's large-format camera: petit bourgeois homes in the provinces and suburbs; modernist and current architectural structures; the startlingly alien faces of fellow human beings; the technologically sophisticated observation of outer space; studies of local neighborhoods by night; the news industry's non-stop invention of pictures; changing views on how we feel about our bodies; and modifications in perceptions through the pictorial explosion of the Internet. Since the early 80s, Thomas Ruff has created a substantial photographic oeuvre in which he draws our attention to all of these familiar subjects, simultaneously marshalling a precise, fascinating rendition of our perceptual universe and a conceptually matter-of-fact presentation of untold layers of meaning and photographic premises. This catalogue gathers, for the first time, all of the work he has created since 1979, placing his most important and familiar works in the context of his entire oeuvre. Substantial reproductions are accompanied by scholarly essays, an annotated catalogue raisonn of works since 1979, and an illustrated biography.

            Book Description

How does a museum build up its own collection? How do the choices made by an institution, and the eventual content of its collection, compare to that of a private collection? These questions and many more about the nature of art collecting are addressed in Imagine You Are Standing here in Front of Me, an attractive, generously illustrated overview of the Caldic Collectie, the sizeable, kaleidoscopic, and willfully accumulated private collection of Joop van Caldenborgh. Forming the collection are works by an exceptional array of contemporary photographers, including Rineke Dijkstra, Jeff Wall, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Thomas Struth, Andreas Gursky, and Inez van Lamsweerde. The collection also contains, as a quixotic treat, the complete graphic works of Marcel Broodthaers. Accompanying texts include philospher/art theorist Boris Groys's consideration of the artwork-artist-collector relationship; Dutch critic Sven Ltticken's close look at works in the van Caldenborgh collection; Jannet de Goede's tracing of its history and background; and Brooke Alexander's interview with the collector. Joop van Caldenborgh, chairman and director of Caldic Chemie in Rotterdam and chairman of the Rotterdam Chamber of Commerce, was a member of the Dutch committee for Manifesta 1 and displays part of his collection to the public on a 50-acre wooded park near The Hague. Published in conjunction with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

              Book Description

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1966, Paul Pfeiffer is considered one of the shooting stars of 20th century art. He has attracted widespread attention with his digitally processed photographs and videos in which he dissects, fragments, and eradicates familiar images of "global icons," thus raising questions about their identities, their origins, and approaches to the reconstruction of such idols in a world dominated by mass media. In his 24 Landscapes(2000), for example, he elimiates the figure of Marilyn Monroe from famous George Barris film stills, thereby diverting the viewer's gaze to the romantic landscape scenes in the background. Beginning with Pfeiffer's Self-Portrait as a Fountain (2000), this book presents readers with a selection of the artist's videos, sculptures, and photographs realized within the past three years.

                Book Description

Description: Yet Untitled collects together a dedicated selection of contemporary photography. Presented in a uniquely straightforward fashion, with strong nods to the grid, this volume presents work with a range of concerns and content. Included are photographers who focus on issues of documentation, such as the "Becherklasse" (Bernd & Hilla Becher and their former students Candida Hafer, Thomas Ruff and Thomas Struth); those who deal in the subjective, following in the wake of Otto Steinert; and those who have grouped themselves around Michael Schmidt since the early 80s. Nan Goldin, Lee Friedlander, Bettina Rheims, Tom Wood and Hiroshi Sugimoto are just some of the international artists featured. Brought together over the last seven years by Hannover-based traffic planner Bernd F. Knne, the work in Yet Untitled offers a fascinating overview of recent trends in American and European photography. Accompanying essays and an interview with the collector explore the historical development of contemporary photography on both sides of the Atlantic.

The last decade of the Cold War era left a legacy greater than legwarmers. Flashback takes a close and critical look at what many see as the decade of painting. Or the decade of the art-market boom. Or as Cindy Sherman once called it, the decade of media criticism. Is it any wonder that what emerges from the diversity of artistic approaches in Flashback is an extraordinarily heterogeneous time, and that in the end the book raises the question of whether it is even appropriate to view art of the 1980s as a category apart? Flashback includes works from some 30 artists, including Francesco Clemente, Robert Gober, Martin Kippenberger, Jeff Koons, Sherrie Levine, Robert Longo, Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman.

2 out of 5 stars Title doesn't properly reflect subject matter.......2004-11-23

Not that this is really a bad book, maybe a little dated, but the title really doesn't reflect the subject matter. This book deals more with the math and science (formulas and equations) behind "live" studio recording philosophies/practices than it does 'Audio' "PRODUCTION". There is some useful information for someone wanting to design their own multi-faceted video and audio recording studio (in the professional realm), but hardly anything geared towards home studio applications. Part of the reason I bought this book was because I saw it had a section on acoustics, and I am currently trying to read up on everything I can about acoustically treating my home studio. The "acoustics" chapter of this book dealt almost entirely with wind noise in air ducts and tonal vibrations due to large blower motors (that you might encounter in a large studio facility).

If you are looking for a more in-depth disection of the math behind condenser mics and line-signal paths, etc., then this is the book for you. If you are looking for real-world applications for the common "Home Studio" then I would suggest another read.
