Book Description
Symbols are an international language, but that language is far from universal. Different symbols mean radically different things in different contextsa cross, a crane, or a swastika each have a distinct meaning for a Buddhist, an art historian, or a student of the occult. 1000 Symbols offers a comprehensive directory of symbols in clear, detailed artworks, each accompanied by a definition of the symbol's history and its cross-cultural meanings. Beginning with an alphabetical, cross-referenced index, the book is then organized into groupings of related symbols:
Geometrical Shapescircle, square, triangle, pentagram, crescent, and spiral are just a few of the entries.
The Universe and the Elements includes all the symbols for the world around usearth, air, fire, and water, as well as times of day or month, and the planets.
Characters and People details the symbolism attached to specific characters or to people and their general attributes.
Living Creatures denotes the symbolism of animals, birds, fish, and insects.
Flowers, Plants, and Trees highlights the symbolism of growing things, from the oak to the lotus.
Mythical Beasts contains beasts from the myths and legends of all cultures, including hybrids such as the centaur.
Objects and Artifacts includes made or manufactured objects of symbolism, from knot to labyrinth.
Numbers and Colors outlines their symbolic attributes in different cultures and contexts.
Whether you are baffled by the relevance of the winged staff held by Mercury in a classical painting or wonder about the number of branches on the Hebrew menorah, this comprehensive directory will give you the information you're looking for, and place the explanation in its historical and cultural context. 1000 illustrations in 2 colors.

Symbols are fun, educational, provide spiritual hints.......2007-09-04
Love this book, how it's set up, love the index, but most of all love the descriptions of various cultures' ideas about same symbol, a smorgasbord of meanings providing options for personal symbolism and spirituality.
Good book.
symbols.......2006-11-03
This book has great explanations and meanings for almost every symbol you can think of. The explanations transcend through many cultures and religions to show you what things mean to different peoples. It talks about signs and symbols as well as the symbology of certain animals, plants, colors, numbers, etc. This book does not give many exapmples (pictures) of symbols, but that is not completely necessary for the purpose this book serves. This book is an amazing reference for artists in all mediums. I strongly recommend this book.
100 Symbols.......2006-02-22
I am sorry to report of my disapointment with this title. While it does contain some interesting research, the symbols illustrated are all modernized graphics. The use of traditional and historic depictions of the symbols would have made this work much more readable.
Exce;ent symbol book.......2004-03-20
This book contains symbols that no other book contains. If you are a artist you can draw them. It contais biblical, and mythical people, flowers, and herbes, and their meaning. I thought think this book is wonderful and beautifully illustrated.
ADDITIONAL REFERENCE AS DICTIONARY.......2003-10-08
Impressive book because of its good contents. Will be good for children as means to learn the beauty of the art and symbols. Although the binding of the book is bad because of its thick individual pages. I hope publisher see to it that the pages are snug together. Thank you.

Persuasive and Poetic Writing On Photography and Photographers
In Between the Eyes: Essays on Photography, David Levi Strauss tackles subjects ranging from “Photography and Propaganda” to the imagery of dreams; from Sebastião Salgado’s epic social documents to the deeply personal photographic revelations of Francesca Woodman. The timely issue of photographic legitimacy is addressed in the essay “Photography and Belief,” and in “The Highest Degree of Illusion,” Strauss discusses the media frenzy surrounding the events of September 11th.
These essays have been published in a broad range of magazines, including Aperture, Artforum, and The Nation. David Levi Strauss is a writer whose visual and intellectual sensibilities are both acute and encompassing. His previous publications include Between Dog and Wolf: Essays on Art and Politics and Broken Wings: The Legacy of Landmines (a collaboration with photographer Bobby Neel Adams). The collection of essays in Between the Eyes reveals that Strauss’s thinking on photography is provocative, lively, and relevant.
Book Description
David Levi Strauss is a writer whose visual and intellectual sensibilities are both acute and expansive. His trenchant writings on photography and photographers have been collected for this volume from a broad range of magazines, including Aperture, Artforum, and The Nation. In Between the Eyes: Essays on Photography and Politics, Strauss tackles subjects as diverse as "Photography and Propaganda," the imagery of dreams, SebastiNo Salgado's epic social documents, and the deeply personal photographic revelations of Francesca Woodman. The timely issue of photographic legitimacy is addressed in the essay "Photography and Belief," and in "The Highest Degree of Illusion," Strauss discusses the media frenzy surrounding the events of September 11. As our world is shaped more and more by images and their slipperiness, what he calls a media "pandemonium" in its root meaning of "the place of all howling demons," we need a mind and voice like Levi Strauss's to bring clarity to our vision.

An anthology of stimulating, serious-minded essays about the interplay of photography and politics.......2006-02-06
New York writer, critic, and poet David Levi Strauss presents, Between The Eyes: Essays On Photography And Politics, an anthology of stimulating, serious-minded essays about the interplay of photography and politics, as well as hot-button topics and lasting social issues pertaining to both. A handful of chapters are not independent essays per se, but rather interviews with experienced photographers. From "Where the Camera Cannot Go" to "A Threnody for Street Kids", "Photography and Propaganda" and much more, each writing lays bare the core of photography and politics - or sometimes, the core of the author. From true stories of optimistic photographers struggling to use their craft to help the oppressed, to the stunning impact that cameras any layperson can easily use have had upon photography as a whole, Between The Eyes is an insightful, contemplative, tightly written set of discussions, illustrated with a handful of well-chosen photographic images.

REVIEW 1 of 3: Corona:NRO Reconnaissance Eye.......2000-01-22
Of the 3 books on this subject which I have so far read, this society press (ASPRS [ex-student member]) proceedings of a meeting (RAM, ed.), this is the most detailed and technical (includes geoid information (++)). Overall the best public book on the subject was also confirmed after after meeting with ex-DDCI Wheelon at LLNL. The appendices include redacted original reports and some marginally reproduced space images (++). Day's book has a chapter on the Soviet Zenit program lacking in this book (minor RAM--), and Peebles' Corona book has more chapters on the human side of the recovery and process (minor RAM--). The most accurate picture can be gained by having all three books (sorry, but more $ to Amazon). This book represents rare original source material from cold war history. The book also has a pointer to the breast cancer X-ray ID which the NRO/CIA claim to have released.

A memoir of a young man's relationship with his father and the importance of a father's faith to his son.
Customer Reviews:
Relevant for many missionary kids.......2003-07-08
This personal story of a wounded missionary kid is a story so familiar for many missionary kids. Mr. Peters did well in balancing the "taboo" of revealing MK (missionary kid) struggles and respecting his father's faith and committment to missions. If your a missionary kid I encourage you to read this powerful book, and even more importantly if you are a parent of a child raised on the mission field.

I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Peters for a class in college. I, too, had been to Siagon in the years he was there. I, however, was older and had gone because of service to our country. I found this a very compelling read as well as some what tragic. Even though Dr. Peters wrote fondly of his father, I found it tragic that this man would put his wife and child in such harms way. I asked Dr. Peters if his father ever understood how profoundly that experience effected him. He quietly answered, never. I also discovered that he had passed away before Dr. Peters could tell him how it changed his life. At fourteen he was to experience the same shock that many in the military did, only with no one noticing. This is an excellent read and may explain better than any other book I have read how many of us returned from that war emotionally shattered.

Customer Reviews:
A Spiritual Journey.......2005-11-07
I first received Raylene Abbott's, "Between the Visions" as a birthday present from a dear friend. Once I began reading, I was unable to put it down. This is a beautiful, uplifting and insightful book that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to explore their spirituality and lift their spirits. Raylene takes the reader on a beautiful spiritual journey and shows us that magic can be found everywhere.
Between the Visions.......2005-10-28
Raylene is a visionary with great insights into women's healing. She has traveled through many passages, in her book she takes you on her journey to inner and distant places. She offers the sacred adventure into sexuality which each of us long for in these times. It is a great read sharing with each that it is achievable NOW.
I have sense of purity.......2005-10-22
I have just finished reading this book. I have sense of purity, like the water of Mt. Shasta.
Inspired by this book, I am practicing to saturate my thought with beauty through my daily life. I am confident about letting go of my old relationships by practicing the wisdom of this book.
This book is the encouragement for me to live the spiritual life. Many thanks!

Review from Mt. Shasta Magazine
Vol. 5 Issue 1
By Michou Landon
Mount Shasta's own Raylene Abbott has birthed a
sweet and intimate memoir of one woman's ever-
deepening journey of healing, integration, Union
with the Beloved - human and Divine. Gently and
simply written, playful and passionate, it is at times
a poignant, powerful read.
Explanatory passages, which may seem very basic
to some, ensure that the "less spiritually traveled"
readers are included and even educated. Even so,
some of the content may command a considerable
spiritual maturity or at least openness.
Biographical narrative ties together the author's
visions, which have served to illuminate her regular,
3-D, human experiences. Often these visions contain
symbolism of buried cultures, reviving the timeless
truth and tangible relevance of images made cryptic
by time and tyranny.
Union is the cohesive theme, whether as Union of
Heaven and Human, Etheric and Earthly, Feminine
and Masculine, or the universality among all
spiritual traditions and practitioners. The gift of
Abbott's personal accounts is to illustrate this unity
more experientially than theoretically.
This is, however, as the author concedes at the
outset, an account of experiences whose true essence
and impact are beyond the realm of words. This is
why the level of each reader's spiritual openness,
humility and maturity can greatly influence how s/he
receives the content and message; that is, how much
s/he finds resonance and inspiration in the
experiences and how much s/he feels an awkward
spectator.
Tantric exploration features importantly in the
book; the candid sexual passages could challenge
some, which might not be a bad thing. True Tantra
holds promise for the salvation of many.
Overall, while this little book may not be for
everyone, it holds potential value for everyone,
whether to answer questions, plant seeds, or truly
inspire fellow travelers on the numinous journey.
Book Description
"Laughing Eyes" is a collection of letters, family photographs and memorabilia between legendary photographer Edward Weston and his son Cole that provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of the first family of twentieth-century photography - the Westons. Here is a personal account of an artist maturing into his role as one of the great photographers of the century and of a boy growing up through the era of the Great Depression and World War II.
Customer Reviews:
"Charming" is only the beginning.......2000-05-11
I never thought I would use the word charming to describe much of anything. This book earns that accolade and much more. Being a fan of Edward Weston as well as Cole Weston, I found this book to be the perfect window into both individuals. Paulette Weston has done a wonderful job pulling together this material from, what I am sure, is a vast archive of family information. It is always exciting to read letters from an age devoid of e-mail and telephone communication was still held with some amount of reverance. This book is a joy for fans of the Weston family and I would strongly recommend it, particularly to anyone who has read Edward Weston's Day Books.
