This corrected and expanded printing of
Thin Films on Glass describes
the development of active and passive thin films on glass at Schott, including recent developments and new technologies in glass ceramic reflectors, coatings on plastics and optical multilayers for ultra narrow band pass filters. Design strategies, the use of conventional and newly developed production technologies, and the application of characterization methods for the structure of thin films and their properties are reported. The book is written by Schott experts and illustrates how the best film materials and deposition and processing parameters may be selected. The topics covered include flip-flop layers, wave-guiding films, Rugate filters and gradient devices, optical transducers, coatings, and mirrors.

Book Description
Market: Engineers, researchers, and students in vacuum science and materials science and designers and manufacturers of vacuum electronic devices in any field where glass, ceramics, refractory metals, and joining methods are used. The republication of this widely used handbook makes available again an invaluable source of fundamental information on the construction of vacuum devices and provides a complete rundown on the properties of basic materials used in vacuum tubes (glass, ceramics, mica, carbon, graphite, iron, steel, copper, nickel, precious metals, refractory metals, and all relevant alloys). Most importantly, it offers step-by- step guidelines for basic joining techniques, including how to deal with common problems such as secondary emission and voltage breakdown. High-temperature properties are emphasized in recognition of the crucial role of vacuum devices in space technology.

Book Description
This book appears in the authoritative series reporting the international research and development activities conducted by the Schott group of companies. This series provides an overview of Schott's activities for scientists, engineers, and managers from all branches of industry worldwide in which glasses and glass ceramics are of interest. Each volume begins with a chapter providing a general idea of the current problems, results, and trends relating to the subjects treated.
This new extended edition describes the fundamental principles, the manufacturing process, and applications of low thermal expansion glass ceramics. The composition, structure, and stability of polycrystalline materials with a low thermal expansion are described, and it is shown how low thermal expansion glass ceramics can be manufactured from appropriately chosen glass compositions. Examples illustrate the formation of this type of glass ceramic by utilizing normal production processes together with controlled crystallization. Thus glass ceramics with thermal coefficients of expansion of less than 0.3 x 10(-6)K(-1) can be obtained. Even for the mass production of high-quality cooktop panels (Ceran® ), oven windows, and other household appliances, a high reproducibility of the properties is achieved. Special glass ceramics (Zerodur® for technological and scientific applications such as high-precision optics or large astronomical mirrors are also discussed. The completely revised edition also features new sections on glass-ceramic applications, with details on their performance, CDC-grinding, and laser gyroscopes containing Zerodur®.

Book Description
This unique book describes the conception of a new material - an electrically conducting ceramic - and the practical work involved in its development and production. The solid-state physics and chemistry of the material are discussed in detail, along with the way in which properties are structure-dependent. The book goes on to review a wide range of practical applications for the new material, identifying factors which proved especially attractive or which prevented further developments. Including data never previously published, and an extensive bibliography of both papers and patents,Development of a New Material: Monolithic Ti4O7 Ebonex Ceramic will enable practitioners and researchers to identify possible new application areas, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the material.

Book Description
A major barrier to the introduction of ferroelectric devices into mass markets remains their limited reliability due to fatigue. The underlying physical and chemical mechanisms of this material fatigue phenomenon are extremely complex, and the relevant influences range from single-point defects to macroscopic boundary conditions. This book summarizes the different aspects of fatigue in ferroelectrics. It is primarily concerned with bulk material effects. Mechanical, electrical, and physico-chemical processes are described; reference data are given for different loading regimes and boundary conditions; and various fatigue models are compared. The monograph also demonstrates how the results of acoustic emission and of microscopy studies reveal the microscopic origins of fatigue in ferroelectric devices.

Book Description
In this book, the many facets of phyllotaxis are dealt with in an integrated manner. The author describes a unified concept of phyllotaxis, and presents a mathematical model of plant growth based on experimental, anatomical, cellular, physiological, and paleontological observations. The model not only provides a framework for formal analyses of botanical data, but also emphasizes the relevance of phyllotaxis to other structures, such as crystals, and proteins.

Book Description
Ulysses S. Grant did more than any other single Union general to secure the North's victory in the Civil War, but he did not achieve that victory alone. Grant's ability to inspire and cultivate the talents of the officers serving under him was a key factor in his remarkable military success. Steven Woodworth and his fellow authors provide ample evidence for that in this first of a two-volume reassessment of Grant's officer corps from Cairo to Appomattox.
Covering the war's western theater through July 1863, Woodworth et al. highlight the character and accomplishments of these men and show how their individual relationships with Grant helped pave the way to Union victory. They demonstrate how each officer's service contributed to Grant's success and development as a general, how interaction with Grant affected each officer's career, and how the relationship ultimately contributed to the course of battle and the war's final outcome.
These portraits include the most important of Grant's lieutenants as well as some who are representative of various officer types. Here are William T. Sherman and Grant's other trusted commanders from the Army of the Tennessee, revered mentor Charles F. Smith, and difficult subordinate William S. Rosecrans. Here too are such citizen soldiers as Lew "Ben Hur" Wallace and Peter Osterhaus, de facto intelligence chief Grenville Dodge, and naval officers Andrew Foote and David Dixon Porter, whose relationships with Grant proved crucial to the war effort.
Full of revealing insights regarding military leadership and the special problems of Civil War command, Grant's Lieutenants adds a new dimension to our understanding of the Union road to victory and gives us the true measure of these dedicated men.
This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing with scant new information.......2003-09-22
Woodworth is a proven, able civil war historian, but this is one of his weakest books. Instead of concentrating on Grant's relationship with his subordinates, he focuses on mini biographhies of people in Grant's orbit, such as Wallace, Baldy Smith, Sherman and Sheridan. The biographies themselves are no better than what you would find in an encyclopedia and contain absolutely no new or novel information. There is very little material on the personal dynamics between the commander and his minions.
Grant's famous feuds with Rosecrans, Pap Thomas and Smith are poorly presented and glossed over without inciteful comment. A golden opportunity is missed here, because these disagreements highlight the most interesting aspect of Grant's relationships throughout the war. In short, a slim and completely unpenetrating look at a subject that is well suited for a lengthy and interesting examination.
Well pshaw.......2001-09-06
I almost always purchase anything on Grant or by Steve Wodworth so of course I snapped up this slim volume. Unfortunately it's not in the same league as its model, LEE'S LIEUTENANTS. The essays seem a bit short and superficial, and, for the most part, seem to reveal very little new information regarding their subjects. I think the publisher attempted too much in too little space. I also wish the editor would have given us a nice, comprehensive bibliographic essay on the existing biographies of these officers. I will of course purchase volume two despite this work's limitations.
