What impressed my most about this book as an undergrad was the way the primary sources were organized into categories. It really helped in writing the term paper to start with some sources and then I was able to use the sources to find more in depth sources.

As an architectural book editor, I find this book an excellent reference for biographical data, architectural terms, and historical context. It's concise enough to give me just the bit of information I need when doing a fact-check or making sure a term is used properly.

The Best dictionary of archaeology I've seen. I used it this semester for my anthropology class (which includes archaeology) and I pulled down an A! Very thourough and concise.

Great concept, poorly edited.......2004-11-18
Ok, I saw this book and thought it would be great. For $50 I figured not a bad investment, get a finished product at the end. I encountered many, many issues in this book! Many of the tutorials were wrong, and they didn't seem to follow the previous steps. Tracks out of place, forgot to tell you to do one thing, mispelled words, etc. I emailed the publisher and they were very gracious, offered me either another product or a refund. I took the refund. It's too bad too, this book had potential. And, I see these same issues crop up in the Premiere Pro book by Baker as well. Maybe someone should offer them the "Editing Text for Dummies"!
Great book.......2004-04-16
It's interesting that people take the time to write reviews (and post them
twice) without taking a couple of minutes to look for solutions. I had
problems with some of the files in the book as well, and it was tracked down
to the fact that Premiere was preinstalled on my computer by the
manufacturer without having files installed that open all the file formats.
Did you bother looking on the author's Web site? If you did, you would find
a complete list of all the files in other formats you can download and use
if the ones on the CD don't work on your particular computer.

the cd dosent work!!!!.I spent hours trying to do the first session but it just doesnt happen.The cd is useless you cant down load files,go vegas 4.0
Do not rely on the CD for the tutorial.......2004-03-17
Not only are the confidence builder files missing, but a number of the source files used in the tutorial are in mpeg format, which cannot be used as source files with MACs (unless you purchase Quicktime Pro which is an additional $29.99) or with Windows if you don't have a capture card that supports mpeg-2. (see the Adobe 6.5 help site at http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/29ad2.htm )
After going back and forth with technical support on the book for three weeks, they've determined I need a different capture card on my computer. I determined that the CD is useless! I have no idea why they would use source files that cannot be imported using Adobe Premiere 6.5 in a coursebook on learning Adobe Premiere 6.5. It was incredibly frustrating! If you do not wish to walk through the projects on the CD, I'm sure the book is useful, but if you actually want to go through the course, make sure you have Windows and a capture card that supports mpeg-2.
Baker's book is not for the novice........2003-06-09
If you're new to Premiere 6.5 I suggest getting Sam's Teach Yourself in 24 hours as it's much more complete and takes you by the hand from starting right into learning how to do DVD authoring and making the DVD on DVDitLE which comes with Premiere.
Donna Baker's book if full of pretty pics and I got it after getting some experience with .. even so I couldn't do the 'confidence builder' tutorial at the beginning of the book as the instructions were not clear enough. She also like A/B editing and tells you to set up Premiere 6.5 that way AFTER you've done the first tutorial project...and of course it's too late to make that change in setup. There is a workaround that, but Baker doesn't even tell you what it is!
I must admit that she has some interesting projects and hints and I did learn, but thank God I didn't start with this book or I would have given up months ago.
By the way I can't understand why Sam's book is the only one that covers ALL aspects of working with Premiere right to the final MPEG2 steps of doing DVD's...all the others leave the novice hanging up there in the air. Premiere is a difficult software and not very user friendly - be prepared for a long learning curve and a fast growing appreciation for all the time and work necessary in film editing.

Just what I needed.......2006-03-20
Exelent product, whith all the topics to learn from the begining to the end how to use the software.
Excellent, but only partly useful to me.......2005-08-20
It is an excellent course and one can easily learn Premiere Pro with this book. But unfortunately the author uses
clips with the file type "mov" and my version of Premiere Pro(for an unknown reason to me)is not capable to import this type of clips from the CD to the program. Therefore from session 3 onward I cannot use the examples and lessons in the book.
This book sucks Do Not Waste Your Money.......2005-04-15
This book is horrible. I have read the book and worked through the tutorials up to chapter 3. Up to this point there have been numerous mistakes in the tutorials. At least 10 so far including timing, errors in the speed settings, the program used is a beta verison or something that makes it confusing right from page 1. It left me wondering if my Adobe Premiere Pro was installed incorrectly ... the disc included doesn't put all the files in the correct places when it tells you to download it to your PC. The video footage that you have to edit is shot by some piece of junk camera and is choppy (no its not my computer - P4 3.2 Ghz, 2 GB RAM blah blah blah my computer is awesome) The only thing good about this book is that I actually have to think for myself and figure out what is wrong with the problems when stuff doesn't work out ... but you know what ... thats not very helpful when I am trying to learn the stuff for the first time. If your thinking about buying this book then you need to rethink. You will have a better chance with another book or if you just boot up the program and play with it blindly. This does give me hope that one day I can also write a book about a subject I know nothing about and then sell it to people at an outrageous price. In closing don't smoke crack like the author of this book did!!!
A good idea, but sloppy implementation.......2004-11-15
The idea is good; teach the use of the functional capabilities of Premiere Pro for artistic expression; the execution is lamentable, starting with the initial creation of a project, where apparently the author had a beta test product which doesn't correspond to the final release.
If you're giving step-by-step instructions, then get them right; as it is, the projects implemented by the student get way out of sync with the baseline projects provided on the CD-ROM (which doesn't install correctly).

I reread the book in case I had been unjust in my original review. I entirely confirm what I said, but the problem is deeper than the fact that the examples are inaccurate; books with examples which don't work can force you into a more active state of mind than the somnolent passivity they tend to induce, and the examples finish up working, even if they often don't illustrate anything very important.
If you wish to use Premiere Pro well you have to understand it; that, for instance, you can edit audio for a complete track, or for an individual clip; nowhere is this explicit, and the level of presentation (click here, click there, press Control D, etc etc etc) tends to obscure it.
Sometimes I have the impression that the author doesn't understand the concepts; with numbering of frames in a clip starting at zero, the duration is the number of the last frame + 1, right ? Try reading the 4-color lavishly-illustrated sidebar on page 67, with excursions into whether the duration occurs before or after the frame is played and other irrelevant considerations; you end up doubting your intuition.
Same thing for the Clip Editing Options on page 91, where the illustrations simply obscure the issue.
At $45 list price the publisher should edit the book and check the examples.
One final point; only someone who hasn't read the book can give it 5 stars. There should be an explicit obligation to read in detail at least half a book before submitting a review.
Best I tried.......2004-11-03
I purchased both Adobe's Classroom in a Book and this one. By far, this is the best book for someone getting started with what is a high learning curve piece of software. Based solely on this book, I was able to produce a 28 minutes promotional video for a group trip to Portugal.
Once having finished this book, it would then be worthwhile to go ahead an work with Adobe's Classroom in a Book. I certain do not recommend the CIB as the place to start.
Working through this book was a pleasure. I say that as a retired teacher who during my career authored three marketing textbooks. If you are getting started with Premiere Pro--this is the place to start.

A must-have for the beginning photographer!.......1998-03-17
I went to the library and checked out a stack of books on photography and I also borrowed The New 35mm Handbook from a friend. Since I first picked it up, it has been the only book I needed to get started as a photographer. Not only does it offer technical instruction, but it includes a variety of helpful insights into the different aspects of the photography industry. My learning was enhanced through use of the many charts, diagrams and example photos that accompany the text.
