This introductory book gives a good overview if the lanthanide and actinide elements, including electronic structure, the ionic forms of the metals, the sources of the elements (with basic chemical transformations) and a survey of the organometallic reactions of these elements. The material is presented by element, with general sections on lanthanide trends and the transuranic elements, Am, Cm, Bk, etc.

The lanthanides and actinides (the f elements) are rarely studied in detail by chemistry undergraduates. More often they appear as an afterthought in bonding, spectroscopy, magnetism, coordination chemistry, and organometallics courses. This is largely because of a lack of an accessible text treating the chemistry of these elements in one cover. Moreover, the placement of lanthanides and actinides in the closing pages of standard inorganic chemistry text books serves to marginalise these elements further. The f elements has therefore been written to fill a gap in the undergraduate chemistry textbook market. It covers much of the fundamental chemistry of the lanthanide and actinide elements, including coordination chemistry, solid state compounds, organometallic chemistry, electronic spectroscopy, and magnetism. Many comparisons are made between the chemistry of the lanthanides and actinides and that of the transition elements, which is generally much more familiar to undergraduate chemistry students. The book uses the chemistry of the f elements as a vehicle for the communication of several important chemical concepts that are not usually discussed in detail in undergraduate courses, for example the chemical consequences of relativity and the lanthanide and actinide contractions. Many important modern applications of f element chemistry, e.g. the use of actinides in nuclear power generation and of the lanthanides in magnetic resonance imaging and catalytic converters in motor vehicle exhausts, are also discussed in depth.

Too many treatments of the lanthanides ends up with lists of data or a main focus on spin mulitiplisities and terms. I'm not sure how many there are that understands the last topic, and can apply it to anything. This book take a broader and more coherent view of the chemistry of the f-group. Many parts are eminent. And the only I could wish more of would a be some few extra sentences about the molecule orbitals in the actinide complexes, ...just to make it even smoother to read.

An excellent introduction to f-element chemistry.......1999-10-14

Scott and Kaltsoyannis have done a really fine job of preparing an entry-level textbook which deals with the chemistry of the lanthanide and actinide elements. It is written at a level suitable for advanced undergraduate and upward, and the authors are to be commended for their clear and concise explanations of some difficult concepts. This is a highly readable text that should be recommended to anyone wishing to obtain an overall picture of the physical and chemical trends within this often-neglected group of elements.

Mad Mike, one of military histories greats.......2000-10-01

The story of Brigadier Calvert's life is one sprinkled with tragedy. He was truly one the the great special operations soldiers in history. So much could have been learned from him that wasn't.

Unlike so many British Commanders, he lead his men from the front. He picked up the name "Mad Mike", when he intentionally took another British Commander, who was getting his men killed, out to a point zeroed in by Japanese Machine Gunners. This was a man who was willing to get killed to save his men. He did this in full view of his men who fully expected him to die.

The book about him, could have been written better. It didn't quite do him the justice that it could have. I hope that the British government will vindicate and apologize to him. God bless you General, you are truly an exceptional human being.

The 'real' Michael Calvert at last!.......2000-01-05

David Rooney is truly an expert in the history & politics of the Burma Campaign during the Second World War. His works to date have confronted many of the false stereotypes and slurs against a number of the warriors of the unique and horrifying war in Burma. Rooney has already re-established the rightful place for Major-General Orde Wingate DSO in his book 'Wingate and the Chindits' and the Wingate's very significant contribution to the successful outcome of the Burma Campaign.

David Rooney now brings to light at last, the life of Brigadier Michael Calvert DSO and the part he played as a 'Chindit' Commander, under the command of Wingate, in the two 'Chindit' Campaigns in Burma (1943 & 1944). Until this book, Calvert's life and achievements have been dogged by negative opinion and spurious comment at every opportunity both during the War and up to his death. The negativity shown towards Calvert was not helped by his own blunt and forthright attitude to those who did not see eye to eye with the Chindit raison d'être. This book at last portrays Calvert for what he was; a successful warrior in warfare and suffering from hardship and 'down on his luck' in peacetime.

Calvert was never better than when he shared the battlefield with the men he commanded, and this book shows that Calvert had a grasp of military knowledge and experience which he put to the test and proved time and time again. Rooney shows that Calvert was also a 'self-critic' owning up to his mistakes and often regretting some of his own words and deeds but highlights Calvert's 'aerial view' of strategy and tactics on the actual battlefield. Rooney writes with clarity and understanding and this book should occupy a space on the bookshelves of all military historians, readers of military history and be essential reading for army officers today who aspire to be true leaders of fighting men. Rooney places Calvert where he should be; a leading battlefield commander of the 20th century whose experiences and knowledge offer a timeless contribution to the lessons and art of war.

On a personal level, Calvert's peacetime suffered from the opinion of his contemporaries, and military commentators. Calvert never received the acclaim and recognition that his latter wartime contribution deserved. He was not awarded any formal decoration for his daring and success as commander of 77 'Chindit' Brigade during and after 'Operation Thursday' in 1944. Rooney makes this clear. He was however, awarded the American Silver Star by US General 'Vinegar Joe' Stilwell during that part of the campaign, despite the obvious antagonism between them. This shows quite clearly that despite their personal opinions of each other during the war, Stilwell recognised Calvert's major contribution to the defeat of the Japanese in northern Burma during 1944. This also serves to highlight the serious flaw in the opinions and assessments of the hierarchy of the British and Commonwealth Armed forces during the Burma conflict, who at that time and since the war must feel some shame that they denied a man who deserved better treatment from those whom he served.

This book was written and published before 'Mad Mike's' death in November 1998 and should stand as Calvert's official biography. It rises above the subjective ingrained inaccuracies aimed at Brigadiers' Calvert's professional and personal reputation. It puts him and his detractors in their rightful places! This must have at least been some small comfort to the 85 year old Brigadier Calvert, whose last few months were spent at The Royal Star & Garter Home in South London, until his death in November 1998. It was there that Calvert knew that there were persons in both official and unofficial capacities who cared about him, who offered him the chance of physical comfort and professional recognition. Such a small price to pay!

The first novel, NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP, in the Helen Bradley mysteries is an interesting thriller that is highlighted by an interesting lead protagonist. Even though, the story line is relatively simplistic, to Patricia H. Rushford's credit, it remains a gripping suspense laden tale. This series will be well liked by readers of mystery.

Awesome book!.......2003-07-17

I have read the entire Lurlene Mcdaniel series, and the 'Clearwater Crossing' series. Lurlene Mcdaniel's books were such an inspiration, and it is an awesome series, as soon as you lift up the book, you can never put it back down. It's almost impossible to expect to read one of her books, and drop the series alltogether. This is for all ages, mostly teens, and helps out more than ever. She is an inspiring writer, and many writers should more often be like her, and writing books that do effect teens, and can help them.

Another poignant novel from Ms. Daniel.......2002-12-19

Carrie Blake is a fifteen-year-old who was diagnosed with leukemia three years ago. At that time, she also had to deal with her parents' divorce. She meets Keith Gardner, an athlete at her high school, who also had cancer, Hodgkin's disease. Both are in the hospital support group. They are both assigned to work on the picnic for cancer patients. As they get to know one another, both become great friends. Keith has a wonderful family who treats Carrie very kindly, while Carrie's parents are both seeing other people. But not everything is perfect for the Gardners. Soon, Keith's cancer returns, and there is nothing that can be done. Keith's family, and Carrie, have to learn how to live without him. This is a really great story, with plenty of emotion, as all of Lurlene McDaniel's books are.

i have read all of the lurlene mcdaniel books and i loved all of them!this one really got my attention though!its about a girl named carrie.her parents just got a divorce and it was tearing her up.Carrie was diagnosed with leukemia and went to a support group.there she gets to know keith gardner.his family becomes quitte close to carrie.keith gets an x-ray and finds he has a tumor in his stomach.the family goes to a camping spot while keith starts to slip away.in this carrie learns what a true family is.i realy recomend this book to all preteens and teens!10-17it really is a 5 star book!

As I sit here I have just finished the book not 10 minutes ago. My face is still tear stained. The book shook me to the core and mand me cry MANY times and is the best book i have ever read. The whole book tought me so much and opened my eyes. My dad has always told me 'the worst thing in the world for a parent to do is bury a child' and this book made me leave my room crying and hug my mom. Its so undiscribeable how this book touched me and how it made the think. This book is something every person should read adults and teens alike.

I LIKE ALL OF LURLENE MCDANIEL BOOKS AND I ESPECIALLY LIKE THIS ONE. IT IS TRUE THAT PARENTS WHO DON'T GET ALONG OR DIVORCE DO EFFECT US. CARRIE HAD MANY FAMILY ISSUES AND THEN SHE MET KEITH WHO HAS A ALMOST PERFECT FAMILY. SHE REALLY STRUGGLES BECAUSE HER DAD AND MOM DOESN'T GET ALONG EVEN THOUGH THEIR DIVORVCE. THEY BLAME EACH OTHER AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THEY BARLEY EVER WENT TO THE HOSPITAL TO SEE HER WHEN CARRIE WAS SICK. PARENTS ARE PARENTS AND THEIR SUPPOSE TO LOVE THEIR CHILD/CHILDREN.
