          Book Description

This comprehensive and up-to-date discussion of the major ring-forming processes used in synthesis takes its examples from the terpene field. Since terpenes are most representative of carbocyclic compounds found in nature and characterized by intricate assays of ring structures, they are the most attractive and challenging targets for synthesis and a testing ground for defining the limitation of annulation techniques. With over 1200 references, this book constitutes a valuable reference work. It can also serve as supplementary text for senior and graduate level organic chemistry.

                      Book Description

The A-Players, the cream of the crop, the best of the best—no matter what you call them, and no matter what the job market is like, top talent is always in high demand and short supply.

Topgrading, the first of Prentice Hall Press' groundbreaking works on gaining the talent edge, showed us that leading companies win by packing their organizations with the best people. It gave us a fool-proof method for identifying the A-players. Embracing Excellence gives you the secret formula for getting them to stay.

Authoritative and practical, Embracing Excellence is based on more than thirty years of experience and an extensive six-year research study of what works—and what doesn't—in employee retention practices at firms large and small. Two of the industry's leading experts, Franklin Ashby and Arthur Pell, join forces to dispel the myths on high salaries, fringe benefits and other stale tactics, and demonstrate how an effective corporate culture is critical to retaining top talent and therefore essential to an organization's success.

This unparalleled work provides tried and true methods for keeping top employees. Moreover, the book is packed with anecdotes, illustrations, real-life examples, worksheets and step-by-step guidance. The Organizational MRI is one of the many practical tools discussed which will help managers assess their current culture and shape their company into an employer of choice for today's coveted superstar performers.

4 out of 5 stars The real question is why more companies don't do this!.......2002-05-20

There is not much here that is brand new, but what are presented are solid concepts and philosophies that help create employee loyalty and business success. The book is an excellent and comprehensive look at the various methodologies to creating a company culture that attracts and retains great employees.

The basic areas of discussion are; Qualities and characteristics of a great corporate culture. Methodologies to diagnose your corporate culture. How to find great people, including solid tips on benefits, interviewing, new employee orientation, retention issues such as work/life balance, and leadership.

One of the more interesting and somewhat new approaches presented is the "Organizational MRI". Using the analogy of an MRI which looks deep inside a body for areas of concern, and organizational MRI is a process to look inside an organization for culture related issues which may impact employee loyalty and business results. It is an interesting and somewhat unique way to look at a familiar process. I also enjoyed the short section on the "worst techniques to obtain reliable information" which not surprisingly are used often in corporate America today.

The authors also correctly point out that the best way to create a great culture for success is to have the right people. In my experience as an HR professional, I have found that the fastest way to change a culture is to hire the right people who will quickly impact those around them in a positive manner. The book outlines several methods for interviewing and onboarding new employees to capitalize on what they can bring to the organization. Also, the authors make the valid point of looking for talent within the organization as well. Not new stuff, but well presented.

Overall, it is a book worth reading. The only real question is why more companies do not apply these time proven methods to build employee loyalty and business success.

Nobody can question Hackworth's credentials--he's America's most decorated living soldier, a military reporter forNewsweek, and author of the best-selling About Face. In Hazardous Duty, he travels to danger spots like Bosnia, Haiti, Korea, Somalia and the Persian Gulf to rate U.S. military performance. All too often, he sees it coming up short. "Our military machine is sputtering like a worn-out tank," he writes in the final chapter, where he also offers a practical agenda for reform that is sure to raise the hackles of what he calls the Pentagon's "Perfumed Princes and Propaganda Poets."

                      Book Description

The author of the phenomenal New York Times bestseller About Face, Colonel David H. Hackworth is one of America's most decorated soldiers, having served at the end of World War II, and in Korea and Vietnam. Retired from the military since 1971, he has completed second tour of battlefield duty -- this time as a war correspondent -- accompanying our nation's fighting men and women to the Persian Gulf, Bosnia, Somalia, Korea and Haiti. What he learned of high-level military incompetence, futility and corruption in the heat and fury of Desert Storm -- and in the desperation of the Balkans and Mogadishu -- is shocking, frightening and infuriating...and it must be told.

Hazardous Duty is a necessary wake-up call for military reform -- a no-holds-barred, no-punches-pulled exposé that calls America's top political and military leaders to account for selling out duty, honor and country. It is riveting, real-life adventure of courageous warriors on the world's new battlefields -- and of their systematic betrayal by the weakness of an increasingly wasteful and inept high command. It offers essential solutions to problems that must be addressed if our nation is to remain the foremost military power in a volatile and ever-changing world.

5 out of 5 stars We All Should Know.......2007-08-23

Hackworth is the ultimate soldier. He has been there, done that, and his record gives him the credentials to call a spade a spade in military matters. Recommendations and condemnations are posited on the basis of what is best for each soldier and his defense of our country. Even his technical descriptions are easily understood by an average reader. The writing flows naturally, and Hackworth's integrity is clear on every page. Honor, duty, country. Hackworth was all about that, even without the ring of West Point. He lived it; all of us owe him respect.

                      4 out of 5 stars A Soldier's Tale.......2006-05-12

Love him or hate him, you can't deny that David Hackworth has a story to tell. "Hazardous Duty" is his very persuasive diagnosis of the problem with American armed forces. Hackworth has "been there." Hew has led men in combat in Vietnam and experienced the "ticket punchers" who were less interested in destroying the enemy than in feathering their resumes. In this book, he takes us from the rice paddies in Vietnam to the scorching sands of Iraq and Kuwait in order to show us the weaknesses in the American fighting machine.

Hackworth takes dead aim at the "military-industrial-congressional complex," the source of much of the problem, in his telling. His "perfumed princes" ride the military promotion machine to high rank while arms manufacturers pad their expenses and congressmen use the revolving door to lucrative jobs in the arms trade. The media and public are bedazzled by a few "smart" bombs and glad-handed into shelling out more tax dollars for Flash Gordon wizzbangery. Meanwhile, the grunts on the ground are outfitted with obsolete weapons and uniforms manufactured for the wrong climate.

Hackworth portrays himself as a soldier's soldier, more interested in what happens on the ground than in some major's efficiency report. His devastating analysis of the debacles of the Grenada invasion and the Iranian hostage rescue are the first serious criticism I have heard about these botched operations. His skewering of Generals Colin Powell and Norman Schwarzkopf is pretty frightening. In Hackworth's telling, it's a good thing that Saddam Hussein was such a horrible tactician; the US might have taken some serious casualties otherwise. By letting Iraq's Republican Guard escape, he empowered Saddam Hussein, and ensured that we would have to fight him again.

Hackworth sees the military as a bloated giant, drunk on appropriations and its own sense of importance. Its leaders are dizzy with bringing home the bacon and fighting the other services, leaving America poorer and less prepared to fight the next war. Hackworth's pre-9/11 perspective is fascinating, if not always on target. He criticizes Reagan and Bush I for blindly throwing money at the military and Clinton for trying to integrate gays at a time of severe cutbacks and low morale. Writing at the time the US was involved in stopping Bosnia's self-destruction, he criticizes that effort as well as our interventions in Somalia and Haiti. The measured success in Bosnia and Haiti were still in the future, and somewhat diminishes Hackworth's omniscience.

Whatever his excesses, Hackworth is passionate about his country and the ordinary soldiers and sailors who defend it. His prescriptions (reducing the armed services from 4 to 1, stopping the revolving door from Congress to arms manufacturers) may be either visionary or unrealistic. But it's clear from his experiences and perspective that a military that persecutes and marginalizes "war fighters," which continually prepares to fight the last war, and is hypnotized by fancy gadgetry is no asset to our country.

5 out of 5 stars Where have all the soldiers gone?.......2005-11-26

There are two types of soldier, peacetime and wartime. Hackworth is from that wartime brand. A pain in the ass in peace but vital in conflict. He clearly identifies the issues and yet is lambasted as a poor staff leader, funnily enough so was Patton, and what a fighting general he was! No one believed him about the Russians at the end of WW2. As an ex-soldier from a recon background i'd really have liked to have met and even served under Col. Hackworth. At least he wouldn't have thrown my life away like modern leadership. The quickest way to resolve an issue is to accept that it exists. The US Military should listen to these views and act on them, otherwise when the big day comes and they are up against an effective force they will be sorely embarrased. Look how badly they are currently handling the insurgency in Iraq.

Great read, unique and interesting perspective about the US military from a qualified expert.

Very interesting book. I couldn't put it down after the first page or two. I've been inspired to read his other books -- esp. About Face, and support his organization Soldiers for the Truth.

I loved this book! Christy's debut mystery is witty, kooky, and gripping all at the same time. Lots of great characters and unexpected twists. It hooked me from the first line and kept me turning the pages til the end. I hope there is a sequel in the oven; HAZARDOUS DUTY is a recipe for spine-tingling fun.

5 out of 5 stars Review: Hazardous Duty by Christy Barritt.......2007-04-26

Gabby St. Claire is a crime scene cleaner. Her days are filled with grime and blood, but the job takes her one step closer to her goal of becoming a crime scene investigator. A typical day turns into a nightmare when Gabby uncovers a murder weapon while cleaning. When her best, an only, employee is arrested, Gabby knows she has to help prove him innocent.

How will Gabby convince the surly detective to take her seriously? And what's with her new neighbor - is he friend or foe? Gabby must solve this mystery or her life will never be the same.

Hazardous Duty is the newest novel from author Christy Barritt. She is the author of eight books and contributor to a number of magazines and website. Barritt brings a new twist to chick-lit with her unusual crime scene cleaning heroine. The writing is smart, funny and captivating with a dose of emotion to round it off nicely.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and intriguing!.......2007-03-20

Impressive debut for Ms. Barritt! I couldn't put this one down. Gabby St. Claire has an "interesting" job as a crime scene cleaner. In Hazardous Duty, she gets herself into a lot of troublesome circumstances. Some of her actions are quite stupid- she seems to lack a normal amount of concern for her own welfare. Her brash honesty (especially in the face of her suspects) is shocking, yet, at the same time you can't help chuckle over her diarrhea-of-the-mouth syndrome- once she gets her anger rolling she justs keeps piling on accusation after accusation.

Gabby was one semester away from being a crime scene investigator but was pulled away by family issues. You have to give her credit, even though she's not working some clean, normal job at least she's in the realm of her dream job. Her attempts to be a investigator in truth are honorable- you can't help rooting for her- but, at the same time you cringe in anticipation of the danger she's put herself in. As expected for her first, unofficial investigation, she gets in a lot of sticky situations.

The story didn't end quite the way I was hoping but there are some loose ends that suggests that it may not be the end after all. Though the mystery itself is not that complex, the actual perpetrator is still a surprise.

You're in for a thrilling read- block out a couple hours to delve through it in one sitting. Pretty much every chapter ends in a suspenseful cliffhanger, making it very hard to stop. Overall the pace is very quick; each chapter is pretty short so it's easy to get caught up in the story.

I was sad to see it end- I'm looking forward to reading more! Hazardous Duty is like soft-core CSI, NCIS, or any other crime show. Not as intense or gross but still an interesting spin on the mystery genre.

                      4 out of 5 stars Fun mystery.......2007-03-18

With an original plot, fresh characters and faith laced writing, Hazardus Duty scores on every level.

                      I enjoyed every page.

                      5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-03-08

I'm a staff reviewer for several different websites, and I read and review a lot. A good mystery will always keep me engrossed. Usually, though, I'm reading specifically for a review, but this time I read just for fun. Am I glad I did or what.

First of all, I loved the characterization of the crime scene cleaner heroine, Gabby St. Claire. She was intelligent, funny and lovable. Not only did she extricate herself from trouble several times, she experiences romantic tension with two different men. That definitely added to her troubles.

Well-written, humorous and exciting, I recommend this novel to any mystery lover.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Powerful, Necessary book.......2002-07-07

I have read about two-thirds of this book and must stop to send copies to my friend and to my daughter. General Singlaub's experiences and insights show the pattern in all the seemingly unrelated events between WWII and Viet Nam (that's as far as I've gotten), events that affected us all. I have been angry, amazed, amused, impressed and proud as I've read this book. I agree with the other reviewer: this should be the text for a history class. General Singlaub's integrity and intelligence illuminate many issues that were hidden in the shadows.

4 out of 5 stars ...should be required reading in every school in the world........1999-11-13

I have just read this book and sent General Singlaub the following letter.

Dear Jack, Under"Acknowledgements", you mention the "ill-fated John Saar background briefs", I believe Churchill would have referred to them as the beginning of your "finest hour". Without that encounter with John Saar, Washington Post reporter, our appreciation of you as the ultimate super military soldier would have never been revealed to the American people. You were magnificent and fearless. No one was able to intimidate you nor could they compel you to change your stance on the issues, not even the most powerful people in the land including, Jimmy Carter, the president of the United States. Your courage met all challenges with integrity and honor and truth even though you understood that your whole brilliant career was in the balance. You did not waver or waffle as other great warriors have done when faced with loss of pensions, future advancement, even death. Many came to their "moment of truth" and stumbled miserbly. Your action of heroic patriotismand dedication to duty can not be surpassed in the recorded annals of U.S.History. Holding firm to your beliefs and convictions, your dedication and patriotism took on heroic proportions and should, at the very least, lead to The Congressional Medal of Honor. "Hazardous Duty" should be required reading in every school and college in the land as well as in the world. Your reference in Part III to "No Parade" perfectly presents to the world why democracy really works and why totalitarian governments fail, i.e. Hilter, Mussolini, Stalin whose systems are motivated by fear with no fair representation.
