I agree, the binding is very nice.......2006-03-20

However this edition is full of ERRORS! An extremely frustrating book to try to learn out of. Did i do it incorrectly or is the equation printed there wrong or is the answere printed over there wrong, or maybe the question itself has a typo......who knows! My professor for this class was familiar with the first edition, but agreed to go with the second edition after we (the class) found it for $4 on here, then he had to go through and correct all the mistakes for us.

A good book on Polymer Chemistry.......2003-12-09

I used this book in conjunction with my Physical Chemistry book when we had a section on macromolecules. The coverage of material I needed for my class was applicable, readable, and spelled out in a way that made it easy for me to understand the subject matter. I have also read through the book outside of my Physical Chemistry class, and I believe it is on the more readable side. The text has a good supply of worked out examples in the text, but sometimes falls short on practice problems. Most of my experience with this book comes from using it in conjuction with other books - this book really shines at its explanation of the subject matter.

The best part about this book is its beautiful binding........1999-06-26

This book does a very poor job of teaching polymer chemistry. Coverage of most topics is too brief and includes too many mistakes. However, the book is organized in an interesting way, and topics that aren't included in most polymer chemistry books are mentioned briefly -- for example interesting polymer properties such as flame retardancy. In this sense, the book might get students excited about polymer science.

Toward a 'language' for reading the organization........2000-06-08

This is a valiant attempt to systematise a difficult area of assessment of organisations. Ken Wilber in 'A Short History of Everything' argues that every entity has an external aspect or 'surface' and an internal aspect or 'depths'. He says 'surfaces can be seen [and therefore measured], but depths [i.e. interior aspects] must be interpreted'. He goes on to say that our society's obsession with measurement results either in depths being ignored, or in inappropriate attempts to devise measures, typically resulting in a distorted perception of the interior aspects.

Garden has made a valuable attempt to provide a language for interpretation that can be shared and that captures within a simple framework ways of 'reading' types of organisation and their relationships with others (suppliers, customers etc). Her aim is explained in the Introduction. In summary, it is to build tools with which to 'read' the organization, using perceptual skills ("and, by this, I mean emotional perception more than intuition.", writes Garden). "It is ... making use of your own perception, applying a framework based on psychology to business decisions and strategy as well as emotion, and understanding the way seemingly disparate aspects of the organization are subtly connected together - that define what is distinctive about this book. It attempts to make a contribution that is additional to our present interpretive framework and tools."

Tools that support methodical use of our 'innate talents' for observation and holistic understanding will be profoundly useful. The author claims that her methodology works for her and that she has been able to transfer her skills to others. The key question is how well these same skills can be transferred by means of a book alone.

Valuable though the contents of the book are, I do not think it has been wholly successful in achieving that very difficult goal - which is not to say that it has failed. It provides a platform on which to build.

If you are concerned with organisational change, the book is well worth examination. You may find its prescriptions useful or you may not, but it certainly stimulates reflection about how we understand and convey to each other the rather intangible forces that are so important to the success or failure of organisations.

Inside the Battle of the Bulge - A Must Read.......2002-05-15

Inside the Battle of the Bulge is a must read for any one interested in personal accounts of WWII veterans. Blunt provides an honest first hand account of his days as a front line soldier fighting in the final months of the war. His recollections are vivid and touching. He is able to relate relative highs and unimaginable lows in a very, very impressive fashion. His accounts of passing through Belgian cities once occupied by Nazi forces are breathtaking. His memoirs of passing through the Nazi deathcamps is gut wrenching. This is really just a terrific read of a momentous and historical event.

Well Written Personal History of the Last Year of the War........2000-11-08

"Inside The Battle Of The Bulge", by Roscoe C. Blunt, Jr. Westport, CT, Praeger, 1994.

If you are looking for a book that tells the story of the Battle of the Bulge, (Dec, 1944), without listing a lot of movements of this numbered division against that Panzer group, and if you are looking for a more personal and human history of the battle, then Private Blount's memoirs are for you. The sub-title of this book is, "A Private Comes Of Age". The author traces not only his march across Europe, from the logistical landing at Normandy (after the battle) up to the 84th Infantry Division's reaching the Elbe River, but also the lessons he learned about man's inhumanity to man. He grew up in the European campaign.

Unlike similar personal history books, the author presents an extra added attraction: records of the reactions of German soldiers and civilians. Young Blount had learned German in high school, so this personal memoir, written from notes he had made fifty years ago, is filled with comments from German soldiers and civilians. For example, there are some entertaining memories such as a short and chubby German woman who berated the advancing American troops, until Blount smacked her on the behind with the stock of his M-1. On the serious side, Private Blount describes in vivid detail the wounds suffered by both American and German soldiers, and how it was possible to become insensitive to such suffering. His description, however, of the concentration camp victims at "Nord Stalag III, Ohrdruf, is heart rending, on pages 173-174.

The author pulls no punches in describing the officers of the American army. In fact, his account of some incidents, such as the lieutenant being awarded a Bronze Star, while not even mentioning the efforts of Pvt. Blount in destroying an enemy tank , makes you wonder if the country should shut down West Point. Further, his narrative of his court martial for fraternization with the Germans (since he was able to speak German) makes you wonder about the commonsense of some of the officers of the time.

Over the last fifty or so years, Roscoe Blount has been "an award winning investigative journalist", (according to the back flap of the book cover), so the writing in this book is excellent. I would recommend this book to any one seeking a glimpse of how it was in the American army in Europe during the last crucial year of the war.
