Book Description
Originally published in 1962, this was the first book to explore teh identification of organic compounds using spectroscopy. It provides a thorough introduction to the three areas of spectrometry most widely used in spectrometric identification: mass spectrometry, infrared spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. A how-to, hands-on teaching manual with considerably expanded NMR coverage--NMR spectra can now be intrepreted in exquisite detail. This book:
- Uses a problem-solving approach with extensive reference charts and tables.
- Offers an extensive set of real-data problems offers a challenge to the practicing chemist
Customer Reviews:
Excellent excercises..........2006-03-12
It's an OK book if you are a novice in the Spectroscopy determination area, but a very nice book if it's going to be used as a reference book. It's very handy and explains the principles of the Spectroscopic and Spectrometric determinations in a very understandable way. Moreover, the excercises are challenging, making this book and excellent tool for those students interested in learning how to determine structures out of some spectra, although the spectra sometimes are so clean that they don't correspond with the one's that are taken by routine. The weak points of this book are the IR chapter and the lack of a UV chapter explaining various useful techniques for structural determination such as ORD and CD. The NMR section is just OK, but there are more details to be explained in the 2-D NMR NOESY, TOCSY and ROESY. I think the Mass Chapters are the best that any single book has offered to me so far to understand quite easily how powerful is the GCMS as a tool for the Structural Determination of Organic Compounds.
Reference vs. Teaching Material.......2005-03-05
This book has wonderful charts and tables for quick referencing, however it is sorely lacking in demonstrations and worked out examples for students new to the subject. The chapters are painfully slow and complex when explaining the theory behind the spectrometric methods and effects on classes of molecules. In short, don't use this book to learn the material unless you already know it. It is a comprehensive reference, but not an effective textbook to teach from.
Great material, regular text..........2001-07-17
The book is subdivided into only 3 of the 4 classical methods for spectrometric identification of compounds: IR, MS, and finally NMR (covering 1H, 13C and very little of 19F and 31P). UV is left out in this edition, so maybe getting a hold of the old edition's UV chapter (which is extremely well-written) might be desired. The MS and the IR chapters are also well-written and explained out. It is in the main technique (NMR) that the author fails to deliver the subject in a straightforward manner and lacks what I think is most important in this field: a large number of exercises and problems.
An Important book.......2000-05-10
This book provide a the basis of the fundamentals of Spectroscopy in many fields (IR, HNMR, CNMR, DEPT, COSY, HMBC, HMQC, TOCSY, MS, and much more) It has many real problems in an special chapter. And the most important, it has a lot of important tables and spectrums.
Good in NMR Spectra analysis information, but weak elsewhere.......1999-11-19
This book lacked information in my opinion. Silverstein started a good project but just didn't give enough information about IR interpretation, mass spec, C-13 NMR, etc. He focussed on 2-D NMR a great deal, and I believe that there are much better textbooks on this subject.

Book Description
Practical Organic Mass Spectrometry Second Edition A Guide for Chemical and Biochemical Analysis J. R. Chapman Kratos Analytical Instruments, Manchester, UK This volume provides a comprehensive survey of current techniques for the use of mass spectrometry in organic chemical and biochemical analysis. Every aspect of modern instrumentation and technique is discussed. The new edition retains the effective division of material applied in the author's previous volume-theory, practical requirements and applications. However, it has been thoroughly revised and extended to include all recent advances in mass spectrometry, and is complete with extensive references. This is essentially a book for the practising mass spectroscopist which will appeal to both biochemists and organic chemists. Some familiarity with basic principles is assumed but the author has employed a style which makes this volume suitable for beginners and more advanced students alike. The present volume will be particularly valuable to anyone who wishes to evaluate and compare alternative techniques. Main Contents-Instrumentation; Sample Introduction; Chemical lonization (lon-Molecule Reactions); Negative lon Chemical lonization; The lonization of Labile Materials (Part I); The lonization of Labile Materials (Part II); Tandem Mass Spectrometry (The Dissociation of lons); Quantitative Analysis.

Description:
Fatty acids distribution and stable isotope ratios (bulk @d^1^3C, @d^1^5N and @d^1^3C of individual fatty acids) of organic residues from 30 potsherds have been used to get further insights into the diet at the Late Neolithic (3384-3370 BC) site of Arbon Bleiche 3, Switzerland. The results are compared with modern equivalents of animal and vegetable fats, which may have been consumed in a mixed ecology community having agrarian, breeding, shepherd, gathering, hunting, and fishing activities. The used combined chemical and isotopic approach provides valuable information to complement archaeological indirect evidence about the dietary trends obtained from the analysis of faunal and plant remains. The small variations of the @d^1^3C and @d^1^5N values within the range expected for degraded animal and plant tissues, is consistent with the archaeological evidence of animals, whose subsistence was mainly based on C"3 plants. The overall fatty acid composition and the stable carbon isotopic compositions of palmitic, stearic and oleic acids of the organic residues indicate that the studied Arbon Bleiche 3 sherds contain fat residues of plant and animal origin, most likely ruminant (bovine and ovine). In several vessels the presence of milk residues provides direct evidence for dairying during the late Neolithic in central Europe.

Description:
This paper is a preliminary investigation into the use of a thermal desorption-gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (TD-GC-IR-MS) method to determine stable carbon isotopic compositions (@d^1^3C) of low molecular-weight volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in airborne samples (e.g. industrial and car exhaust emissions) as a means of differentiating their sources in the environment. A TD-GC-IR-MS method for obtaining @d^1^3C of VOCs (benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, ethylbenzene, m-xylene and propylbenzene) in air samples has been optimised, and is proven to be both reproducible and linear. The @d^1^3C of the VOC standards was found to be comparable (within analytical error) to that obtained from direct GC-IR-MS analysis. This novel method of VOC analysis is valuable in environmental and forensic investigations.

First with the Most biography.......2006-10-05
Alright, I admit it, what first interested me in this particular version was the price. I found it on the discount rack at a bookstore and started reading that night. I found it difficult to put down and finished quickly. It was the first biography of Forrest I had read (some years ago) and I was pleasently surprised to find that he was not demonized but judged in the context of his time. Good biography should do just that - keep the person in the context of their time. Mr. Henry's volume may remain my favorite biography of this brilliant general. There are other good ones but it is always difficult to better your first love.

A Great Work.......2004-12-04
Forrest, though contreversial was without a doubt one of the best generals on either side in the Civil War. He was able to do more with less than many others in similar situations. With no education and being looked down upon by most of his peirs that is an especially impressive achievement.
Henry's work is also good in that it allows us to contrast biographies todaywith the ones from previous times. Henry pays little attention to Foresst's role in the Klan and portrays his slave trading and slave holding in the most positive light possible (dim though that may be). A more modern biographer might well blaze a blinding light upon these activities to the exclusion of his battlefield achievements.
I would recomend this work to the reader interested in the Civil War. It does not cover much else in the life of Forrest. It is well written and a good read.
Excellent concentration on Forrest's campaigns.......2003-02-21
Forrest was an amazing man, a complex man, before, during and after the Civil War. Men despised him because he was so bloody effective, but those same men were forced to grudging respect of Forrest's brilliance. This is not a balanced view of his life, but an excellent concentration of his campaigns. I would suggest reading Jack Hurst's work and John Allan Wyeth's in connection to this book. I have seen some grump because Hurst did not have maps and military information in his book. This will give them all the information they need.
Henry work is essential to understanding the whole, but the other two works should be utilised in conjunction to obtain a fully understanding. I cannot recommend them enough for someone starting in the search for a man that is so amazing.
A good read..........1999-08-12
This is a biography of one of the most misunderstood leaders of the Second War for American Independence, Lt. Gen. N. B. Forrest, CSA. While concentrating on the war years, Henry does give light into Forrest's postwar activity, including his official disbanding of the KKK in 1868, a fact generally overlooked by yankee revisionist historians. A good read, and reccommended.

A+.......2007-01-14
A great book. NBF was the real deal. You will enjoy this one.
Long Live the South!!! yeeeee hhhaaaaaa
Very in depth though weak in areas..........2002-09-30
This is one of those books that certainly captures the military career of Nathan Bedford Forrest without getting into much of his personal life history. For trying to understand the man I would suggest Hursts' biography on Forrest. This book was a rather in depth study of every situation Forrest was in during the Civil War. It is strictly military and though thorough, it's lack of maps was troubling. The maps used in the book rarely define the movements or are complicated to understand and poorly demonstrated. Often they are used for a multiple of operations and are completely vague. Had they been better implemented with information and used more often it would have truly completed this book. I found this book by Henry to be less detailed in more popular matters of surrender and enemy deception compared to other books on Forrest. It was easy to get lost at times in regards to reading about generals under Forrest and their movements throughout the western campaign. Is this the best book on Forrest? Military speaking I rank it high, though as a well rounded biography it certainly isn't one as I don't think the author intended to bring that part of the man forward. This book I found boring at times and I wondered how 465 of pages could be filled when detail about the man never surfaced except trivial military matters.
This is one of the best histories of Forrest.......2002-01-18
This is the standard for Nathan Bedford Forrest history. One of the most brilliant generals of all time. This book really gets into his campaigns and life. Great book and must read for any Civil War history buff; especially one from Tennessee.
