Book Description
Quantum Chemical Methods In Main-Group Chemistry Thomas M. Klapötke Axel Schulz University of Munich, Germany With an invited chapter by Richard D. Harcourt University of Melbourne, Australia Computational quantum chemistry has emerged in recent years as a key tool for the elucidation of molecular structure and molecular properties. However, it is still sometimes regarded as a highly theoretical subject of limited practical value. In this book the authors emphasize the strong link between quantum chemical calculations and experiment. The book is a fascinating blend of theory and experiment, and deals with topical and interesting molecules, using state-of-the-art techniques and accompanied by full explanations. In Part 1 of Quantum Chemical Methods in Main-Group Chemistry, modern quantum mechanical procedures are described in a concise and systematic manner. Sufficient theory is provided to enable the reader to come to terms with the primary features of the methodology. In Part II, numerous applications of these procedures are described. These applications provide extensive consideration of highly topical and interesting modern chemistry, and also illustrate aspects of the methodology. Part III, which is new in the English edition, is written by Professor Richard D. Harcourt. To provide a fully balanced approach to the subject, this part provides valence bond descriptions, and considerable attention is given to the use of Pauling three-electron bonds and increased valence structures. Relevant valence-bond concepts are reviewed briefly in the first chapters of Part III. Quantum Mechanical Methods in Main-Group Chemistry provides an invaluable link between computational quantum chemical techniques and practical, modern chemistry. As such, it is an important resource for both the advanced undergraduate and postgraduate student, and also for the more experienced researcher.

The Man Who Might Have Saved The Leaning Tower of Pisa in WWII.......2006-10-28
It is always an interesting look at history when you read it first hand from those who were a part of making it happen; like WWII veteran Leon Weckstein does with his well told chronicle of war in Italy "Through My Eyes." Not only does he take us through those campaigns and battles as an eye witness, but he gives us some insightful and emotional views of what happened.
This is not your normal memoir taken from some diary or journal - his story reads at times like an action novel with feelings and sensitivity. His choice of phrasing and words makes for some good reading; however, the actual events he writes about and his personal relationships are what drive this book. How fate, divine intervention or perhaps his own actions stopped the destruction of the historic landmark "The Leaning Tower of Pisa" is something that caught my fullest attention. I had first laid eyes on that tower as a 19 year old teenager hitch hiking across Europe in 1965; it is hard to imagine what a great loss to the world that destruction would have been. He did have orders to destroy the place and its fate was in his hands for a period of time. What happened makes for a great story but there are several other instances and experiences in his book which are enthralling and will hold your attention.
Weckstein has natural storytelling ability for describing what he experienced. This is truly a gift for the ages. We are fortunate to have had men like him to sit down and tell their stories. This is real history about real men in war. A must read for all history and WWII buffs. I thoroughly enjoyed reading his book and it is on my personal list of books you might consider reading!
Through My Eyes Lives Up to its Title.......2004-07-19
Leon Weckstein has written a book that lets one see the Italian campaign from the viewpoint of a single soldier. It is exactly the book that I needed to know more about what my own father experienced as an enlisted man in the 91st Division. Weckstein's description of his experience enhances what my father told us of his experience and means much to us. Though my father was in the 362nd Infantry and Leon was in the 363rd, their experiences were probably similar since the units were working on the same objectives as they fought to dislodge the Germans from town after town and from the mountain tops along Highway 65 in Italy.
Weckstein's courage, skill and love of the Italian people all make this a worthwhile book.
A Hero, regardless..........2002-11-19
I'm glad Mr. Weckstein wrote down his WWII memoirs. I wish that more veterans would follow his lead. There is much to learn about human nature & the privilege given to glimpse into the private hell of wartime active duty is a sacred trust. However, Mr. Weckstein's needed an experienced writer to make his story more palatable. He uses one recurring dream-sequence where he imagines his German counterpart which goes on & on... & on. I would have appreciated more reality about his comrades. To be sure, Mr. Weckstein is a hero with a story that must be told. However, there are better 1st person WWII narratives.
Review by one who was there.......1999-09-23
I wrote the Foreword to this book. Leon Weckstein and I both served in the 363rd Infantry. His book follows the trail of the 91st through training in Oregon. In April, 1944 the 91st shipped out to North Africa for Operation Vendetta, then to Italy where it fought out the war. Weckstein knows what it was like to endure combat in the mountains of Italy. Those who don't should read his book. For those veterans of the 91st, my book, POWDER RIVER! is now out of print. The original history published in 1947 has been reprinted by the Battery Press and is once again available.
Descriptive look at WWII through the eyes of a 91st soldier.......1999-08-24
I just got "Through My Eyes" and I am already on Chapter 10. I simply love it! Weckstein's anecdotal style makes this a very quick, enjoyable read. The paragraph describing "S.O.S." made me laugh the hardest I have in a long time. I laughed so hard, my wife had to come and check on me to see if I was OK. As the webmaster for the 91st Division, I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
Nestled in the Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee, the town of Johnson City saw its first AIDS patient in August 1985. Working in Johnson City was Abraham Verghese, a young Indian doctor specializing in infectious diseases who became, by necessity, the local AIDS expert. Out of his experience comes a startling, ultimately uplifting portrait of the American heartland.

A Doctor's Love for his Patients.......2007-05-30
This based-on the author's true-story details the time he was just starting out as a doctor. He picked a Hospital in smalltown United States where he would be the infectious disease specialist. Suddenly, cases of AIDS appeared even in that small town. It was the 80's epidemic and as it spread from the big cities AIDS victims were met with fear and a lack of compassion from most doctors. Verghese was one of the few who truly listened to and cared for his patients through such a terrible disease.
An excellent personal account of the emergence of AIDS.......2007-04-24
In "My Own Country" Dr. Abraham Verghese tells the story of the emergence of AIDS in rural Tennessee from his perspective as a new foreign doctor. In the process of describing the increased presence of the disease in his community, Dr. Verghese also tells the personal stories of his patients as well as his own story - how working with the disease opens his mind to new perspectives as well as the toll it places on him personally. The author's narrative style is compassionately captivating, managing to entertain and inform at the same time. I'd highly recommend it for those seeking to learn more about what being a good doctor is like or about the difficulties faced by those that had to deal with the disease in its emergent era.
My Own Country: A Doctor's Story.......2007-01-11
This is an excellent story. It is an interesting and informative read.
An Important Chronicle..........2006-10-05
Dr. Verghese's depiction of AIDS in Johnson City is a powerful book about the way this disease first entered the American consciousness. As an outsider - an Indian doctor in the Midwest - writing about his experiences with the gay community and others who were first diagnosed with HIV and AIDS provides a unique perspective into the way people ostrasized and condemned, often in the name of God, those who were first diagnosed. One reviewer commented that the book is dated, but in fact, Verghese's account remains an important one as it not only describes a disease that has shaped and continues to shape our collective consciousness, but is also applicable for the way it reminds us how terrible we can be when faced with an unknown and how easy it can be to attack those we don't understand.
What Verghese does so well is provide a human aspect to almost everything he writes about. I, too, read the Tennis Partner before reading this, and I think the way he is able to juxtapose his own family life and the way it slowly disintegrates, while at the same time doing so much to keep other families together btoh physically and spiritually is remarkable. The individual cases he describes are so vivid and truly provides a face to the diease.
I highly reccomend this book to anyone considering the health profession (along with his other book the Tennis Partner and Gawunde's Complications) as well as people who are curious about infectious disease and its impacts upon society.
Tells an important story, but is too dated for 2006 readers.......2006-03-06
I love to read medical non-fiction, about doctors, nurses and their experiences in the world of medicine. Since I was a fan of Verghese's work from The Tennis Partner, I picked this book up with a lot of enthusiasm.
This book tells a quietly tragic and compelling story about the beginning of the AIDS crisis, and Verghese's personal experiences and feelings as he treats his first AIDS patients. The writing is clear and he is great at observing the small details in life that make you feel like you are living the story.
Unfortunately, the story doesn't feel current anymore. The perspective that Verghese has is still very valuable, but in 2006 the book is more valuable for understanding the history of the disease than it is for understanding the current reality for those dealing with HIV/ AIDS.
He does an amazing job chronicling the incredible stigma and difficulties faced by those with the disease, and the attitudes that were common then about AIDS and homosexuality. But our culture, medicine, and treatment of HIV/ AIDS have all changed so drastically since the eighties that this book really is better as a look backwards at how things used to be than it is a current look at the treatment and care people with AIDS experience now.
I hope Verghese writes more, because he is a powerful writer with some amazing stories to tell. I think this book has an important place in our cultural library, but if you are looking for a book to help you understand how people with AIDS live nowadays, you would be better off looking elsewhere.

Book Description
"An Hour by Sun" is a trip down lanes of memory, rows of tobacco and corn on a thriving Georgia farm and amid the triumphs and travails of medicine in the last half of the 20th century. It is funny and nostalgic and informative, as Leonard Durrence, a retired country doctor, traces his beginnings on a depression-era farm, through the rigors of medical school and internship and the challenge of a small town medical practice. For him, the joys of retirement are just as vivid a color in the tapestry of his life as the boyhood escapades with his sisters and his curious adventures in scientific understanding. The personal elements are the strongest notes in this account, particularly the spiritual faith that weaves together all his experiences. The adolescent who was born again grows into a thoughtful adult who finds God's solid presence supporting him as he tends the sick in Bangladesh and makes tough decisions in the emergency room and operating room of his Blackshear hospital. This devoted Christian carries the same presence into a series of severe health problems that afflict him, his beloved wife and the father who has been a hero in his life. "An hour by sun" is a ritual phrase his father spoke at the close of every farming day and Dr. Durrence has cherished the meaning of those words through the years. When there is just enough light left to do the important things, one must recognize and use this "hour by sun" to accomplish this task with gratitude for all the hours that came before. He has used his significant hour to record the events of nearly 80 years and underline the way in which God has led him through them. From early childhood, when he kept the woodbox filled and harnessed the pesky mules, to a discovery of the magic of reading and learning, to the important discovery of a life partner and the joy of parenting; from deep satisfaction with healing, civic involvement, gardening and travel, and finally with retirement in a community he lov

Excellent Collection of Stories that Cover the Emotional Range.......2007-03-13
As the daughter of a semi-country doctor, I grew up with the experience of having a father who always seemed to be on call. Dr. Macdonald's anthology of cases was an excellent read, and after the first story I immediately called my mom to share it with her. We both had a laugh over it, and I am going to recommend that she buy it, along with my 2 older sisters. I enjoyed reading the stories, and they are set up such that you can read for as long or as short a time as you want. A must-buy for any child or spouse of a physician!
EXCELLENT!.......2006-01-11
I thought this book was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed this book... you'll laugh out loud and you'll cry as you see everything through the eyes of one rural Minnesota doctor. I'm couldn't wait until his second one came out! Read it!!
Charming tales of the North Woods of Minnesota.......2003-11-11
I got this book because I too come from Minnesota and work in health care, but once started on Dr. MacDonald's A Country Doctor's Casebook Tales from the North Woods, I was hooked. The author was what we would now refer to as a family practitioner who worked in a small rural community near Duluth from 1947 to 1980. His charming collection of stories is a delight to read, and I literally read the book from cover to cover over about three hours without putting it down. The tales of the doctor and his patients pull the reader through the pages without tricks of style, just the author's natural talent for telling a simple story: the life and death struggles of members of his community, the happiness of new lives begun, the suddenness of unexpected death, incredible courage in the face of adversity, acceptance of the setbacks of life, amusing vignettes of simple people living life among their neighbors.
FOR THOSE WRITING PAPERS in English, creative writing, journaling, journalism, history, and sociology, this would make a nice format to follow or a good bibliography entry. The author has used his own life experiences to create a history of his practice, community, and time.
A tale of love from Minnesota.......2003-01-29
Dr. MacDonald's book is a welcome remembrance to those who lived in Northern Minnesota in the 40's & 50's. His stories of survival (and sometimes not surviving) are very descriptive and detailed. When he tells of a trip through a swamp he carried his wife through to help a patient, you almost feel as though you are sloshing through the mud with him. His stories are NOT about heroics that he performed on helpless rural Minnesota residents, although he certainly could do that as well. They are about the heroics of those people he cared for. This story has it's humorous parts as well as parts that make you cry for the brave and futile attempts at life of his patients. I am grateful to Dr. MacDonald for this book, and I hope to see more from him in the future.
Sickness, compassion, feuds, dangers, births and deaths.......2002-10-07
A Country Doctor's Casebook: Tales From The North Woods is an anthology of autobiographical stories by Dr. Roger A. MacDonald, a physician who has served the people living in a remote region of northern Minnesota during the years after World War II. Vignettes of sickness, compassion, feuds, dangers, births and deaths make A Country Doctor's Casebook unforgettable and very highly recommended reading.

Book Description
A young Scottish doctor looks back on the unforgettable characters who became his patients in East Texas. Qualified as a doctor only 18 months before, he leaves the security of his medical school, his hospital and his heritage to start a single-handed rural practice in the wilds of Texas—his only resources: his ex-flight attendant, pregnant wife and their year-old baby. They exchanged their city sophistication for a rustic life, their temperate climate for the appalling heat and humidity of Texas, and their culture and language for a behavior and speech based on one of America's last frontiers. Deceived by those who invited them to American and left briefly penniless; befriended by a nearby village without medical help and miles from a hospital, they cared for their new patients, covering, in an old Ford with a hole in the floor, a house-call area larger than New Hampshire and Rhode Island combined. Like their patients, they survived. Because they had each other.

A doctor's tale with a difference.......2003-08-21
Once started I found it almost impossible to set this book aside to carry out other tasks. Eric's story is indicative of the outstanding achievements by pioneering Scotsmen practising medicine in most trying conditions. His anecdotes are both humorous and tragic, and warmly told. It is clear that he and his wife Margaret became well-beloved within the community they served, which in turn received the caring attention at the hands of a young medic at the outset of his career as a country doctor.
