5 out of 5 stars Airport planner and engineer's viewpoint - updated.......2000-02-08

The best of its kind for the technical detail. We have most of the other airport and terminal design books on the bookshelf (up to 2005 publication date), but every time we come back to using Horonjeff for the serious design of new airports and extensions. It is also good for layout design by the engineer for terminals - although the architects may want more books. But there is another book - the 2003 book titled Airport Systems - Planning, Design and Management by Richard de Neufville and Amedeo Odoni - that will become the definitive text on airport design for the first part of the 21st century. So you'll need both, especially if you have to deal with the complexity of systems and stakeholders that are part of medium to large size airports.

Horonjeff has got the full set of data tables and charts to enable you to design anything. I seldom need to use the ICAO Manuals on a daily basis, and only use them for cross checking an obscure point. The upgrade from the 3rd edition to the 4th edition was a big one - it metricated much of the book, added in the latest aircraft (late model 737, 767s and ER, and the 777-200), and generally updated the book. Examples of new information are some good stuff on runway/taxiway capacity, and some additions to ACN/PCN. Worth spending the money to update. Essential to buy if starting from scratch. The best textbook for a technical course on Airport Engineering. Needs Airport Systems to have a rounded and modern view of masterplanning (and the successor to masterplanning - dynamic systems planning).

4 out of 5 stars Lots of show, little substance.......2001-08-12

I found this book to have lots of great ideas for folding paper and putting together some cute books. But what I found lacking in the book was any real substance regarding the content of the children's books. The emphasis was clearly on the appearance of the projects, and the author had little to nothing to offer as far as how the books affected the writing level of the children, except for quantity. Quality was overlooked. I found a later book by this author much more informative. This was Literacy and the Book Arts. I bought A Book of One's Own to fill in the gaps about making some of the children's books he referred to in his later book.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked on Books! (book arts to develop literacy).......2001-02-24

This book is the first of Paul Johnson's 2 books on developing writing skills in elementary school kids through book arts. The book is useful in two important ways. First, it contains a good number of easy to follow instructions for a wide range of relatively simple paper folding and paper engineering bookmaking strategies. Someone with little experience in book arts can easily make these books. For that practical aspect alone, this book is an excellent resource.

But the second reason is perhaps more important. Johnson makes persuasive arguements for integrating the act of writing with the making of books. The book structures provide creative points of departure that tap into visual and spatial modes of learning. Johnson gives sound reasons to employ such strategies in "publishing centers" found in many elementary classrooms. He gives many practical tips about what one can expect from various age-groups of kids and the degree of facilitation required by the adults in charge.

For a day to day reference and useful tool for unit and larger curriculum planning this is a gem. Johnson's second book, Literacy Through the Book Arts expands the theory dimension of A Book of One's Own. For teachers who truely want to pursue integrated curriculum strategies I highly recommend both of Johnson's books.

I have used Johnson's book to explore possibilities for both my kids' book-making projects (and facilitating projects in their elementary school classrooms) and those of my college students (I teach printmaking and book arts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

Read Johnson's books and you'll be hooked!

While some info in the book might still be relevant, it was printed in 1990. This is much to long ago considering there have been 15 years of additional research on reading theory and practice. Had I realized the publication date, I would not have bought it.

        Book Description

Traditionally, texts and images have been discussed together on the assumption that they are 'sister arts,' but in Reading Iconotexts Peter Wagner pushes beyond the world-image opposition in a radical attempt to break down the barriers between literature and art. He sets out here the new approach he has identified for dealing with the 'iconotext'—a genre in which neither image nor text is free from the other. Examples include Swift's Gulliver's Travels, a number of William Hogarth's best-known engravings, and a sample of the so-called 'obscene' propaganda prints that were published during the French Revolution. Throughout, the author argues for the importance of seeing text and image as mutually interdependent in the ways they establish meaning. It becomes clear in the course of Wagner's exposition that one cannot study prints without taking into account their accompanying inscriptions; whilst illustrated books contain two kinds of 'text'—one verbal, one visual—that are invariably at odds with one another. Drawing on theories of intertextuality and semiotics as developed by Barthes and Kristeva, as well as post-structuralist studies by Derrida, Foucault and others, Reading Iconotexts treats pictures as encoded visual discourse and illustrations in books as counter-discourse. The author's persuasively argued polemic in favour of recognising the 'iconotext' as a viable advance in methodology is an important contribution to current debates on word and image.

          Book Description

This Collection of fourteen essays by eleven different authors demonstrates the increasing breadth of enquiry that has taken place in art and design education history over the past two decades, and the expanding range of research models applied to the subject. The essays are grouped into six sections that propose the emergence of genres of research in the field - Drawing from examples, Motives and rationales for public art and design education in Britain, Features of institutional art and design education, Towards art and design education as a profession, Pivotal figures in the history of art and design education, and British/European influence in art and design education abroad. The rich diversity of subject matter covered by the essays is contained broadly within the period 1800 to the middle decades of the twentieth century.

The book sets out to fill a gap in the current international literature on the subject by bringing together recent research on predominantly British art and design education and its influence abroad.

It will be of specific interest to all those involved in art, design, and art and design education, but will equally find an audience in the wider field of social history.

          Contents include:
          • Drawing from examples
          • Motives and rationales for public art and design education in Britain
          • Features of institutional art and design education
          • Towards art education as a profession

            Book Description

This book reviews past practice and theory in critical studies and discusses various trends; some papers keenly advocate a re-conceptualisation of the whole subject area, while others describe aspects of current and past practice which exemplify the "symbiotic" relationship between practical studio work and critical engagement with visual form.

Rod Taylor, who has done much to promote and develop critical studies in the UK, provides us with examples of classroom practice and gives us his more recent thoughts on fundamental issues – "universal themes" in art – and gives examples of how both primary and secondary schools might develop their teaching of art through attending to themes such as "identity," "myth," and "environments" to help "re-animate the practical curriculum."

Although some of the discussion in this book centres on or arises from the English National curriculum, the issues are more global, and relevant to anyone involved in developing or delivering art curricula in schools. An American perspective is given in papers by George Geahigan and Paul Duncum. Geahigan outlines an approach to teaching about visual form which begins with students' personal responses and is developed through structured instruction. In Duncum’s vision of ‘visual culture art education’ sites such as theme parks and shopping malls are the focus of students' critical attention in schools; Nick Stanley gives a lucid account of just such an enterprise, giving practical examples of ways to engage students with this particular form of visual pleasure.

This publication serves to highlight some of the more pressing issues of concern to art and design teachers in two aspects. Firstly it seeks to contextualise the development of critical studies, discussing its place in the general curriculum – possibly as a discrete subject – and secondly it examines different approaches to its teaching.

              Book Description

This volume presents a series of papers concerned with the interrelations between the postmodern and the present state of art and design education. Spanning a range of thematic concerns, the book reflects upon existing practice and articulates revolutionary prospects potentially viable through a shift in educative thinking.

Many of the essays pinpoint the stagnancy of teaching methods today and discuss the reductive parameters enforced by the current curriculum. The radical tone that echoes through the entire series of papers is unmistakable. Throughout the book, postmodern theory informs the polemical debate concerning new directions in educative practice. Contributors shed new light on a postmodern view of art in education with emphasis upon difference, plurality and independence of mind. Ultimately, the paper provides a detailed insight into the various concepts that shape and drive the contemporary art world and expands the debate regarding the impression of postmodern thinking in art education.

Contextual vocabulary coverage is included throughout the book. Paragraphs and short passages used in examples and exercises are drawn from contemporary sources, as well as college textbooks from across the disciplines. The book uses pattern mapping throughout as a heuristic to help readers understand the various organizational structures that authors employ. Integrated throughout the book is instruction on higher-level critical thinking skills, such as drawing inferences, evaluating evidence, recognizing propaganda and bias, and identifying logical fallacies. For those interested in developing their reading skills.

                  Book Description

Due to the inevitably subjective nature of art, the issue of evaluating the work of art students will always be controversial. In The Problem of Assessment in Art and Design, a distinguished group of art educators and experts examine this divisive topic across the educational spectrum, from elementary schools to university campuses.
This volume analyzes the present state of art and design assessment from both historical and philosophical perspectives, pointing the way toward possible directions for reform and reconciling the conflict between objective evaluation and individual creativity.

                      Book Description

Despite its extraordinary richness, Islamic architecture has rarely been studied for its conceptual and symbolic significance. In the Sense of Unity, a handsomely illustrated volume and the first extended work of its kind, Nader Ardalan and Laleh Bakhtiar examine the architecture of Persia as a manifestation of Islamic tradition and demonstrate the synthesis of traditional Persian thought and form. The most fundamental principle of Sufism, the inner, esoteric dimension of Islam, is that of unity in multiplicity. This view sees in every aspect of reality a reflection of a transcendent source which is given symbolic expression through all of man's activities, most directly and importantly through his works of art. The authors of The Sense of Unity show how all the elements of the Islamic architecture of Persiafrom the simplest architectural unit to a complex urban environmentare woven around this central doctrine and thus are best understood as multiple manifestations of unity. The Sense of Unity is illustrated with photographs, drawing, charts, and tables which are an integral part of its argument and which exemplify, in abundant and striking detail, the principles discussed in the text. Presenting to the Western reader for the first time the insights of the Iranian cultural tradition, the book also offers a stimulating new way of thinking about man and his relationship to his milieu.
