Excellent Introduction - Good Background Reading Before Tackling Current Literature.......2006-08-21
Fast Reactions (ISBN 0198554567) by J. N. Bradley is a concise, well-written introduction to a wide range of experimental methods used to study reactions completed in durations ranging from a second to nanoseconds. The target audience includes advanced chemistry undergraduates and researchers who need a comparative assessment of the varied techniques.
Bradley emphasizes the principles underlying the different methods and the types of results that can be obtained, but he goes easy on the mathematics. I was particularly interested in flash photolysis, but I soon found myself reading Fast Reactions in its entirety. Fast Reactions (1975) may not be a new text, but it still valuable as a quick introduction prior to tackling the current literature on ultrafast processes (sub-picosecond and femtosecond techniques.)
Most of the methods measure overall rates. Bradley grouped them by their degree of perturbation of the reaction system: none (equilibrium methods), weak (direct relaxation and periodic relaxation techniques), medium (flow techniques, low intensity photolysis, and electrochemical methods), and high perturbation (flash photolysis and shock waves).
Some techniques - like flash photolysis, shock waves, and crossed molecular beams - are especially useful for studying details of collisions, including the transfer of energy between translational, rotational, and vibrational energy states.
Fast Reactions is fast reading; this short text has only 120 pages. Fast Reactions offers more detail than found textbooks like Physical Chemistry by P. W. Atkins, or Physical Chemistry by Gilbert W. Castellan, but it is not any more difficult. Fast Reactions is publication number 23 in the Oxford Chemistry Series.

Book Description
This book deals with the contribution of fast reaction techniques to our understanding of events on the molecular scale during chemical reactions. It covers the advances resulting from the combination of chemical kinetic and spectroscopic methods and highlights the information to be obtained from ultrafast processes lasting a few picoseconds or less. Computerised molecular dynamics calculations are shown to be an additional important tool. These methods have transformed the extent of detail of knowledge it is now possible to obtain of individual reaction mechanisms. The book contains sections on: the rates of diffusion-controlled reactions, the mathematical theory of diffusion and diffusion-controlled reaction rates, flash-photolysis techniques, initiation by high-energy radiation: plus radiolysis, fluorescence quenching and energy-transfer from excited molecules, ultrafast processes: sub-picosecond and femtosecond techniques, proton-transfer and group-transfer reactions in solution: Marcus theory (I) and electron-transfer reactions: Marcus theory (II).

Not a wioz, but not an idiot either.......2007-07-23
I used this book as part of a computer-modeling course at Duke. I don't think it alone will make you a wiz at Matlab, but it does help you overcome that, "What did I just get myself into?" feeling. For the movice this is a very useful resource that will keep you from bouncing you head against the nearest wall while using the program.
Excellent introduction to MATLAB!!!.......2001-06-13
I was first introduced to Matlab as part of a junior level signal processing course. Without any kind of introductory manual on using Matlab, I struggled through the course believing that it was a pain to use. Recently, needing to use Matlab again, I found Knight's book in my school library. It made a huge difference. After just a few hours with the book I felt like a Matlab wiz. This book covers the basics concisely, using plenty of examples, and also shows how easy it is to use more advanced features like graphical user interfaces. It also provides instruction for dowloading a library of useful m-files and demos. It is not a comprehensive reference but I couldn't recommend it more highly to a person who needs to learn to use Matlab or feels uncomfortable using it.
Good reference book for beginers and intermediate users.......2000-05-27
you'd get information about the Matlab programming

Book Description
This is the first published account of the life of Major General William Phillips, a British officer whose achievements during the American Revolution place him in the ranks of Britain's most successful generals such as Charles Cornwallis. Although he was a commoner, Phillips rose from the rank of cadet in the Royal Artillery Academy, distinguished himself through remarkable achievements in Europe's Seven Years War, and went on to command a field army in America. This story chronicles his extraordinary abilities, leadership, and innovative style which left a lasting mark on British artillery tactics and military leadership. It provides new insights into the captivity of Burgoyne's army, British operations in Virginia in 1781, and the first detailed account of the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia. In this probing biography, suitable for military buffs and historians alike, Davis uncovers new and fascinating materials about Phillips' life, including his connivance with General Cornwallis to change British strategy in the American southern theater. Though Phillips has largely been denied attention throughout history, Davis' work goes a long way toward restoring his rightful place.

Unusual and welcome.......2003-05-07
As I read more and more about old jazzmen, it is striking just how many died early or unnecessary deaths. "Jazz and Death"
fills an unusual and worthwhile niche.
The only complaint I have is that Dr. Spencer tends to editorialize at length on the justifications for marijuana laws, etc. Not that I don't agree completely. He also (in the introduction -and- the conclusion) draws attention to the very tenuous links between the history of jazz and the history of medicine.
A wonderful and engrossing read.
Great Jazz Reference Book.......2002-09-19
... Dr. Spencer, who is no spring chicken, really knows his jazz. His book is part biography, part history, part sociology; it is also an excellent primer on pathology for non-medical people. His book is spiced with glimpses into the lifestyles of jazz greats. There's even a bit of ... humor here and there. Dr. Spencer has real affection for these haunted geniuses, and he shows us why early death was epidemic in their world.
Author gets a 5 but presentation brings it down.......2002-09-02
This is an excellent reference work which should be on the shelf of most serious jazz collectors and anyone who writes about jazz or does discographical work in this field. Dr. Spencer very clearly explains numerous medical conditions and provides death certificates and other pertinent illustrations. He also clears up a number of mistakes/misunderstandings which have appeared in the literature. The references are annoying (the superscripts are tiny for my ancient eyes) and you must look in the back of the book to find the reference. The illustrations could have been sharper. Lastly, I understand that Dr. Spencer submitted a 660 page manuscript and only then was told that 300 pages was the goal. Thus, a great deal has been cut. He did a remarkable job but no doubt a lot of information got left on the cutting room floor!

A Must for Any Future Sport Administrator.......2000-09-27
This book is for anyone who ever wanted the inside information on how some of sports top exuctives got their start. I was delighted to see that all contributors mentioned internships in their personal climb to the top. The book and its contents inspired me to work hard from the bottom of the job totem pole to the top. The book also gave practical information on how to get started and who to talk to. I would recommend this book to anyone graduating from college and those who are already in the field for some insiders advice. A very insightful and interesting book!

AN EYE OPENER.......2002-07-23
There have been a few books written about Black scientists that are as interesting as the one before you. Black Scientists profiles eight African-Americans who made significant contributions to the field of applied and pure science. Some of the individuals profiled are well known while others have faded into the backdrops of history. These African Americans who took on the field of science had to overcome many obstacles in obtaining their education, finding positions and acquiring funds for their research. All of them met the mark of excellence and we have become the beneficiaries of their work.
Unlike other biographies of Black scientists, the author dispenses with the well worn myths surrounding these figures. She focuses on what the individual actually contributed to their field other than being the "first" Black. You are in for a surprise when you find out the impact that one man had on the field of medical education for Black doctors and nurses. You will be astounded at the work done in chemotherapy, chemistry and computer science by highly assertive African-American men and women.
Learning about these great people is an eye opener. Science is a field wide open in which anyone can participate regardless of race. Their inspiring achievements and contributions tell us that African-Americans can and will continue to make strides in the area of science. Read these stories and consider walking in their footsteps.

Book Description
Gordon Stone, famous English professor, bridged inorganic and organic chemistry. He and his colleagues synthesized hundreds of novel organometallic molecules having remarkable and previously unknown bonding characteristics, leading to an understanding of the structure and reactivity of many unusual and curious organometallic substances. In this book, Stone discusses the nature of funding and academics in Britain and in the United States. Much of Stone's dry wit and insightful wisdom is illustrated in his autobiography. In addition, many photographs depict both the professional as well as the personal side of this renowned scientist.

Book Description
The truth of a man lies in his nose.
-- Ovid
It's amazing what a simple scent can conjure: childhood memories, someone who has passed out of our lives, a change in season, a holiday. Since ancient times, humans have used the nose to soothe fears, choose leaders, alter consciousness, and lure mates. We have certain smells that remind us of different people and places that have touched us. But the historical significances of the nose -- its complex biology and social meaning -- are rarely considered. The Nose is the first book to explore its subject through multiple, overlapping social lenses: anthropology and art, science and literature, sickness and health, sex and fertility, appearance and popular culture, mythology and memory.
The Nose takes readers on a whirlwind tour across the spectrum of human history, culture, and emotion. From hieroglyphics to modern journals, the nose has been both an enduring mystery and obsession, as fascinating to Pliny as it was to Picasso. Positioning the nose as the "anchor of our features" as well as the principle gateway to life, Gabrielle Glaser charts the shifting significances of the nose across different geographies, ethnicities, and time periods. She profiles the extraordinary people she encountered while researching her story -- the rabbi who contemplates the nose on sacred Jewish texts; the Maryland woman whose sudden loss of her sense of smell plunges her into depression; a passionate physician at the Mayo clinic with a contoversial theory about chronic sinus disease; and an African-American plastic surgeon who created new categories of "nose jobs" based on black features worldwide. For anyone who has pondered the nose, been plagued with allergies, or agonized about its size, The Nose is a learned and lively examination of our most primal organ.
Customer Reviews:
Worth the Softcover Price.......2003-10-09
As many reviewers mentioned, I heard the author or book discussed on multiple NPR programs. It seemed fairly fascinating. ...and it's ok, but the radio discussions were better.
The book is part history text (including biblical), medical text, marketing text, etc. G-d has a favorite smell; odors through history, reactions we have to aromas, nasal surgery and treatments. Overall, it's not difficult to imagine this being compiled from a newspaper article series.
It is interesting information and things we never think about (i.e. how can someone w/no sense of smell know when something spoils). Some of the descriptions of what the period during the bubonic plague was told very effectively. It's the details Glaser puts in here that are so interesting (yet disturbing). The descriptions of some of the surgeries are vague - and had they been as graphic as the plague years, most would suffer w/out surgery (as I have).
Slightly over 200 pages - and fairly big print. It's probably worth the softbound price, but $25 for the hardcover isn't necessary.
Saline Nasal Irrigation (Jala Neti).......2003-04-24
If you have chronic sinusitis like I do, you might want to try a technique from India called Saline Nasal Irrigation (or Jala Neti). It is the only thing that helped me.
The book talks a lot about sinusitus, but I don't think it mentions Jala Neti. I heard the author interviewed on NPR by Terry Gross. She was explaining how irritants get into the nose, and the nose tries to flush them out with extra mucus, then went on to say that you then take antihistamines to dry up the mucus. This seems illogical, rather, go the other direction by flushing the nose deliberately by pouring salt water through it. Search Google for the phrase "jala neti" if you want to try it. If you are really ambitious, look up "sutra neti".
I hope we can learn something from the people in India. Perhaps we could have learned someting from the people of Afghanistan or Iraq or Palestine but instead we bombed them and then whitewashed the media.
The Nose Knows the Nose.......2002-10-20
I had heard about this book in a variety of places - a review here, a radio show there. Like the reader from Waltham, I was curious (and dubious). But I picked up the book the other day, and read. And read, and read. Like Glaser, smells have affected my life powerfully -- I recall an occasion at a friend's house where I caught of whiff of the soap my grandmother used. I became so overwhelmed with longing for her (she died years ago), that tears filled my eyes even before I knew what was happening. In "The Nose," Glaser describes precisely the power that odors have on our lives, but so very much more. As someone committed to alternative health, I, too, have often been puzzled by the abundance of drugs and surgery geared toward "curing" chronic sinus problems (which I have suffered in the past). Glaser's chapter on doctors at Mayo who have researched this poorly understood disease makes for riveting reading. So, frankly, does the entire book. (I was a bit puzzled by the inclusion of a chapter on snorted drugs, however. It was interesting, but felt a bit out of place.) At any rate, this is a deeply intelligent, beautifully written book on a fascinating subject. Glaser mined history, pop culture, medicine and science for a wondrous narrative. This is an impressive and important book.
In "The Nose," Glaser describes precisely the power that odors have on our lives, but so very much more. more than by a nose.......2002-10-17
As a literary academic, I was reluctant to buy this book. We've had a good many books on body parts and "objects," and frankly many of them have been poorly reserached, pretentious, and badly written. Still, the cover drew me and the author's name sang. I browsed. When I turned to Part I and read the first sentence--"In the beginning, the world stank," I was hooked. As it turned out I made no mistake. "The Nose" is an intelligent piece of serious reserach; it never pretends; and it is exceptionally well written. The tidbits Glaser uncovers are often wonderful. Did you know that the inspiration of the first stick-on deoderant was the invention of the first ballpoint pen? But there are major facts here about the nose in all its profiles, and the overarching discussion of "smell" holds the book together, cover to cover. Still, if this book had been only "clinical," the it would be have been less entertaining. What Glaser achieves in giving us, gracefully and with ease, is the almost seamless tale of the nose paralleled by her own personal memoir--of her nose, her chronic battle with her sinuses, her own life of smell, both her temporary loss of it and how she suddenly regained it. So the book is both factual and instructive and detailed (the descriptions of the surgeries she observed and experienced are not for the faint of heart) blended with her life-long relationship to her own nose and its special sensitivities. Glaser is deeply read in the history of her subject, medical and literary, and she has full command of her "object." This book is both instructive and pleasurable.
