Insightful, useful and needed by most organizations........1999-03-22
This book is about mistakes and what can be learned from them. It shows how organizations can free up people to think, communicate and act without fear, shifting the culture from one of blame to gain (gain culture). In one chapter the author, for example, provides a detailed analysis of 227 eminent people, treating them in such a way that individual self-esteem is not threatened. Section 2 is devoted to harnessing the positive power of mistakes. The discussion of the gain culture and its development is enlightening for those concerned with creating a learning organization. The book is very well organized, practical, provides exercises and stories or cases that illustrate major points.
The hunt for the guilty seems to pervade organizational life. This book shows how to escape from the grip of the black hole of blame into which so many bright stars of the organizational galaxy sadly perish. So most every organization will benefit from this book. Highly recommended to managers everywhere.

Customer Reviews:
Inspirational, Healing.......2006-05-16
I have just finished reading Lee Burkins' remarkable book, Soldier's Heart. It touched me deeply and opened my eyes and my heart to so much that I could never have otherwise known. Those of us that sat on the sidelines during the Vietnam war - regardless of our politics - were not only blinded to the plight of those who fought, but also, through our own lack of concern, inadvertently contributed to their pain. In writing, Lee has reached out to us, reconnected, and given us all the opportunity to heal. For this, I am profoundly grateful.
I will be passing Soldier's Heart on to my adult children. It should be mandatory reading for their generation and those that follow. Without access to a warrior's experience and vision, how will they ever be able to understand the human costs of contemporary warfare, or have any hope of piercing the veils of untruths and diversionary distractions that constantly envelope them. Lee Burkins' painful but life affirming book is a gift to us all.
A Must Read.......2006-02-28
Forget the typical cliches like "riveting", "incredible", and "fascinating" because Lee's work goes above and beyond all of that. This is not simply a book or a memoir - it truly is an "Inquiry of War" and war is something that Lee Burkins has a fair amount of knowledge in. From the jungles and bomb craters that surround the Ho Chi Minh Trail system inside Laos and Cambodia, Lee and RT Vermont fight for their lives against hoards of North Vietnamese Army troops and the suicidal odds of MACV-SOG's secret war. But perhaps the most difficult war Lee wages is the one that dominates his psyche and his mental well-being. This is one of the most powerful books I have ever read; it is raw and unbridled and remarkably unique. Thanks for everything, Lee.
"Soldier's Heart" - a personal and significant document.......2004-10-11
Amid the increasing number of books about Vietnam this book is quite special. It is the personal memoir of a man who spent his time in Vietnam in the Special Forces, and has spent much of his life since recovering from the experience. Thus the narrrative covers his youth and joining up, service in Vietnam including fighting with the Montagnards, returning home, pineapple farming in Hawaii, another stint of military service again in Hawaii, and a lot of hard work fighting for veterans' rights and counseling other vets. What is striking about this narrative, however, is that it does not follow a linear conventional structure. Rather it has a sort of spiraling structure, with each successive section looping back or forward in time and space. But this isn't confusing, it is in fact very effective in conveying that sense of acute dislocation that accompanies post-traumatic stress and is suffered by so many veterans.
It is a tribute too to the author's writing style that the reader is bowled along; I read most of it at a single sitting. The stories too in themselves are gripping, by turns sad, humorous, disturbing (some very disturbing), and inspiring. But the main sense that comes across is immensely life-affirming, a real impression of the author as a man who has faced his demons and is coming out the other side.
Overall, this book is a good read. More than that too, it is one man's intensely personal testament to the post-Vietnam trauma of American society, and thus deserves a significant place in the broader corpus of the literature of war.
Soldier's Heart -- An Excellent Book.......2004-09-23
This book details Lee Burkins' experience in the Vietnam war and its aftermath. Written in a non-linear fashion, the book is a collection of poignant vignettes and memories. This allows for a psychologically realisitc and "big-picture" way of understanding the story of Mr. Burkins' past. Jumping between the mountainous jungles of Vietnam, Hawaiian VA hospitals, and civilian life in the States, the reader gets a simultaneous sense of the past, present, and future. What is most truly impressive, however, is not the story of the war itself, but the story of Lee's path in reckoning with the trauma of war, coming to terms with it, and purifying his heart.
Unconventional Excellence!!!.......2004-03-01
Lee Burkins has produced a remarkable work that will assure a vital education to those genuinely concerned with the true prices of warfare.
Those intelligent enough to purchase his teachings/reflections will acquire a visceral knowledge of a journey that few survive let alone possess the courage and clarity to document.
SOLDIER'S HEART is a masterpiece and parties claiming to be military historians without turning its pages are simply fooling themselves. Please read the following reviews found beneath this writing. You'll get the idea.
De Oppresso Liber, Lee...and God Bless You.

The perfect gift for people you love when they're diagnosed with Cander........2007-09-19
12+ years ago when my surgeon told me I had breast cancer (my second bout with cancer), she gave me this book. Not only did it help me develop, sustain and exude a positive attitude during my entire treatment phase, but it made me a touchstone for anyone else who was diagnosed with cancer and contacted me. Since that time, whenever someone that is near and dear to me, someone that I truly love and want to do something positive for when they are diagnosed with cancer, I give them a copy of this book. Not one of them has died to date. My most recent gift of the book has been to my husband and he is visibly changing his attitude as he reads it.
Not your fault!.......2007-07-12
When I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, I read a wide variety of "inspirational" cancer survivor books. The Bloch's Foundation's "Fighting Cancer" (free just contact them) and Norman Cousin's "Anatomy of an Illness" really resonated for me, made sense and reinforced my focus. Bernie Siegel's books on the other hand made me feel that the disease was my fault for having the "wrong" personality and that if I allowed any negative thoughts into my mind, I was putting my recovery in doubt. Heck most of my thoughts during treatment were negative, real negative! I literally threw his books in the trash, probably more of a symbolic gesture, but it felt good. BTW I am cancer free for the last 16 years, fathered a child and getting a kick out every day.
A powerful message but not scientifically prooven.......2007-06-26
Bernie's central theme is that there is a strong correlation between emotional health and physical health. However he rarely cites any scientific evidence for his claim. He keeps repeating this message based on his experiences with random patients. Surely one can conclude many things from random patients, but a theory has to applicable accross a large sample. There has to be a 'control' if the study is to have any scientific merit. I wished he had shown more of these studies.
This would definitely be a five star book had the author been more scientific in prooving his point. Nevertheless I do personally agree with it.
hope, but not false hope.......2007-05-15
I'd pretty much accepted that i was going to die from cancer. My doctors had too. My friend gave me this book and it caused a huge attitude shift in me. Now I feel that I have it within me to heal and live a long happy and healthy life. I've been told there is nothing medically can be done for me. If I hadn't read this book first I would have just laid down and died when they told me. But now I've opened myself up to other tools for healing - good diet, wheatgrass, reiki, meditation and absolutely no sugar. Time will tell, but I think I'm on the right track.
I thought this book was so good that I ordered a copy to give to my oncologist. He's a lovely man and I believe his desire to help his patients will lead him to use this book as a useful tool in the future.
a read that cheers you up.......2007-05-10
Everybody who is confused and scared about what they are going through due to serious health problems should read this book. "Healthy" people also, they will learn a lot.

Chow Qigong works.......2001-12-24
The stories of healing with Qigong are not exaggerated. Lay people can generate sufficient healing energy using Dr. Chow's methods to be felt by others and to assist healing, in our case, my daughter's very severe ulcerative colitis.
Awesome all around info about QiGong - A must read!.......2000-08-14
This books is good for the beginner or advanced. It goes into the history, where it is now, and where it could go.
Awesome! It's a must have for anyone interested in Qigong........1998-10-22
An excellent book for the beginner and the advanced. Lots of very informative information and sources given. Describes Qigong in the past, present and future. A powerful Qigong system that really does give quick results.
Customer Reviews:
One of the towering classics of the cancer-prevention diet.......2007-01-21
Despite its somewhat lurid title, this book, by a Professor of Music at Ball State University and his wife, is one of the most accessible introductions to what is said to be the cancer-prevention diet also known as macrobiotics. The Kohlers are wonderful writers and their anecdotal approach and confessional style together with their university-trained minds make for a revelatory read. Studied together with Dr. Anthony Sattilaro's book, "Recalled by Life," they offer a unique education not in a "New Age" diet, but in the traditional approach to food that people possessed for thousands of years. The secret of this diet is its low protein/no sugar (meaning no sweets of any kind including so-called "good" sweeteners like fruit juice, honey, agave syrup, maple syrup etc.). Macrobiotics teaches that cancer cells need protein and sugar to grow; that's the great secret, often too simple for western minds to accept. Warning: these are my opinions. I am not an expert, only a journalist.

What a wise and simple tape........1997-10-13
Having discovered my prostate cancer only this month, I was comforted and informed by INSIDE THE MIRACLE. I too had begun to suspect this cancer as one of the deepest lessons of my life...one I had to be careful to not misinterpret. I agree with Mark Nepo that it must be allowed to wash through us. He does and marvelous job of bringing home the life-long truths of living close...My wife and I were brought closer and made able to share deeper this experience. Thanks to him and his wife Anne and to the fine music that heals as well.

Book Description
Mary Self was first diagnosed with bone cancer in 1983 and underwent above-knee amputation and intensive chemotherapy. Believing that she had beaten the disease she went on to complete her studies in medicine, married her college sweetheart and, in defiance of medical assertions that she was sterile, gave birth to two beautiful children. In February 1999 however, her nightmare was to return as cancer once again ravaged her body. Mary was told that the cancer would no longer respond to treatment and that she was terminally ill. She returned home to her family to make final arrangements, and fulfilled a wish to take her son back to Australia to show him where he had been born. After coming home from Australia, Mary's condition rapidly worsened and she was admitted to a hospice for pain control. She asked the elders of her church to visit and pray for her. This is the incredible story of how one doctor won her own personal battle against cancer through the power of prayer.
