The architectural heritage of Newport, Rhode Island encompasses the rich and lively history of the people who have lived there. The city's public and private buildings reflect the varied attitudes, styles and tastes adopted by the American nation, from the colonial settlers in the seventeenth century who sought religious and political freedom to the socialite robber barons of the late nineteenth century whose enormous wealth bought the freedom to pursue life's pleasures. This book covers all of the most famous homes, I would not say that it is comprehensive, but it does a very credible job of discussing the best homes. The photographs are well conceived and the text, though not indepth, is informative. If you are someone interested in the most famous mansions of Newport and appreciate quality photography then I believe you will be pleased with this book, if you are however, looking for an indepth guide to the all of the mansions, then you may want to wait on that book, which unfortunitly, as far as I can tell, has not been written.

A true Ghost story.......2006-07-24
This book is very good and will give you the creeps!
I do believe this story to be true.
I saw the movie on tv and patty Duke did a great job playing Jean Williams. This is a story about houses built over a graveyard but the people that bought these houses did not know it at the time.
A lot of very scary things happen to them.
I read this book over the weekend and could not put it down.
anyone that wants to read a true ghost story this is it.
A very good read.the movie is called Grave Secrets and it is very good also!

This one is guaranteed to frighten you!!! I not only read the book, I saw the movie, and the segment on Unsolved Mysteries. I truly believe this is a very true story. This is one that I may even read again.

The tales are true. poppets way is actually one of the highest spots in the subdivision throughout this district and the black slaves from the cotton plantation in barrett were buried where the "poltergeist house" actually sits. families usually tend to stay there from 6 months to a couple of years and leave becuase of the tales and things theyve experienced while living there. the house is up for sale right now actually. the house next to them dug a underground pool and actually found bones of human skeletons. i recently went to the water plant right next to these houses and there are 8'x3' depressions in the ground where the old graves have sank throughout the years. they have been filled up and have sank time and time again. no lights stay on out there becuase they always burn out. this creepy feeling just comes to me when i see go to the fence. this stuff is true so if u really want to know more about this grab the book and watch house on hauting lane or just ask movie store about the movie made on the newport subdivision in newport.
Newport resident's view.......2005-09-18
I live about 1 mile from where this story took place and from what I've heard the people that owned the house/wrote the book were having financial problems and desperately wanted to get rid of the house. When they found skeletons in the ground, this became their scapegoat. Anyways, that's the rumor, I'll have to try and see if I can find more out.
Also, I personally knew the people who moved into the house after them and even went to a birthday party there, and they had no problems to speak of.
The Black Hope Horror.......2005-08-10
This is one of the best and most sad books on this topic that I've ever read.
It's a fascinating story and there are aspects of it that are extremely chilling and unnerving.

A wonderful history of a wonderful place.......2006-09-02
I think this wonderful book is out of print now, but you should try to get (good quality) used copy of this book. It goes way back in GL history, and shows the old homes that used to, and for some, still do line the shores of this wonderful lake. It starts in Lake Geneva (city) - the largest town on this lake, and walks you counterclockwise around the lake...north shore, west end, and back down the south shore...around 25 miles in all. You read - and see - in wonderful old copies of photos and postcards - about the local and national families and powerbrokers - Fairbanks, Lyttons, Swifts, Harris', Allertons, Sears, etc...who build their wonderful 'summer places' around this wonderful old lake.

Journalism in the America of the 1890's frequently wasn't distinguishable from fiction. This type of fiction based journalism depicted the Rhode Island of the 1890's as the Transylvania of the Western World and the Vampire capital of America. This did sell newspapers. The trouble is the newspaper stories weren't true. Austen Sharp doesn't adequately inform the reader of the fact that all of Rhode Island's fantastic tales, old and modern, have been soundly debunked. [...] The book targets an immature teen audience. This book is a must read because it is at the top of the heap for its genre.

Munch is best known for his iconic work "The Scream," a work that has been reproduced & parodied countless times since its creation, but which still resonates with emotional power even after such popular saturation. Well, there's a lot more to this artist than just one famous work! This collection of his prints is an excellent introduction to a world of raw feeling laid bare, often swathed in blackness & palpable dread. Munch clearly felt & anticipated the alienation & fear of the 20th (and now 21st) century, depicting it with naked intensity. He delves deeply into the darkest places of the human psyche, making it tangible for all to see, whether they want to or not. This isn't always comforting art, but it's revelatory. A recommended volume!

Colorful Writing for a Monochrome Book.......2000-04-02
Often times, in the art world, pedantry and an overwrought sense of aesthetics make anything written on the subject unbearable for all but the snobbiest. Fortunately for the rest of rest, Mr. Hodin wrote this book. He is an engaging, lucid writer who has studied his subject thoroughly and actually knew Edvard Munch in his later years which enables him to offer a good deal of important personal information that other authors are simply not able to do. This additional insight is important, for Edvard Munch is one of the truly original geniuses of art and his work carries an urgent message for the dissociated psyche of modern man. My only complaint with this volume is that the publisher elected to print only about one third of the prints in color which, while unfortunate, is by no means devastating. If youre interested in this greatest of expressionists and interested in delving into the spiritual crisis of modern man, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. On the other hand, if youre an elitist art critic looking for stodgy literature, look elsewhere this is not your book.
Discover the world of Edvard Munch.......2000-04-01
An excellent and scholarly work covering all of Munch's work. Over 160 plates are discussed in depth and there are cross references to the wherabouts of each of the plates at the end of the book. The major fault is the lack of colour plates (30), and the relativly poor quality of the reproductions but all in all a valuable and comprehensive work.
