    Product Description

Its wealth of facts and clean, abstract design, the Metropolitan World Atlas is a must-buy. Despite the burgeoning interest in metropolitan growth and globalization there has been no way of directly comparing metropolises - until now, that is. This atlas offers a unique survey of global trade networks and their impact on metropolitan space. It documents a total of 101 metropolises, analysing them in easy-to-read ground plans. It also includes index numbers and tables regarding such aspects as population, density, pollution, travel time, data traffic, air and water travel and the size of Central Business Districts. Its unexpected combination of ground plans and statistics makes this atlas a unique work of reference where for the first time metropolitan areas like Beijing, Lagos, London, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo can be compared with one another and in terms of their position in the global urban network.

5 out of 5 stars Great Travel Companion..........2006-06-05

For those of you interested in the praticality of this as a travel companion, trust me, it works. The maps are not enough alone to find buildings in their respective cities but between knowing their general locations and addresses you can easily navigate your way to find them. I carried this book in my pocket around Europe and can say first hand that it was the best travel guide I had. A must for any Architect or student planning on traveling.

5 out of 5 stars So Many Buildings In Such A Little Book.......2006-03-27

When the original Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture was released in My 2004, several reviews were more enticed with the size of the tome in contrast to its contents. Frankly, I was put off by the price tag (albeit well deserved).

However, the recently released Travel Edition of the tome has become one of the essential resources of my library.

First, don't be put off of the fact that the softcover book is referred to as a Travel Edition as it contains a wealth of projects (subdivided by continents then countries). For each project there is a single project photo, project address, and the project architect. With each building a sentence or two states the significance of the project to 'Contemporary World Architecture' (an overly broad subject in itself).

Second, there is a grand diversity to the projects profiled in the Travel Edition in terms of project types and locations. I haven't come across another book to date that offers such a variety of projects within the covers.

Lastly, the Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture Travel Edition provides project insights and narratives that are free of any bias or criticism. The lack of both is something that is rarely found in a subject as subjective as architecture, and is welcomed in this context.

The Atlas suffers from a minor foreseeable problems. The book limits itself to projects that were complete as of the time when the book went to press. Any building completed during its printing or afterwards suffers the fate of being excluded from the Atlas; perhaps it/they will be included in future editions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for an Excellent Price.......2006-03-21

I think this is a book EVERY architect student should posses as a reference. It contains a large selection of references from all over the world. In comparison to the large version, which is rather costly for a student, this version contains brief descriptions and its a good size. I just wish there was a version on DISK!!!

5 out of 5 stars So many buildings, so little time.......2006-01-30

Superb little book. The only problem is how to see all the buildings in it before you die.

5 out of 5 stars A great little book, esp for European buildings.......2005-12-23

This compact travel guide is a good bet, especially for European buildings. For the US try the latest edition of The Architecture Traveler.

The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture--so massive that it comes in its own plastic carrying case--is one of the rare publishing events that lives up to its hype. The book showcases 1,052 buildings completed since January 1998 with thousands of well-chosen color photographs plans, elevations, and cross-sections. Major elements of each project are described in elegantly succinct texts. Rather than simply pay lip service to the concept of "world" architecture, this book ranges throughout 75 countries on six continents. And although the big names in the field are here--Rafael Moneo and Herzog & De Meuron are each represented by nine projects; Tadeo Ando with eight, Frank Gehry with six--the focus is on the ingenuity and diversity of contemporary architecture, regardless of the fame of its creator.

The book's global view embraces many approaches, including experimental construction, neo-modernism, postmodernism, reinterpreted vernacular architecture and lingering traces of the International Style. While virtually every building type is included, from factories to museums, from lookout towers to train stations, the largest and most creative category is single family housing. Selected (as were all the projects) by a panel of leading architects, critics, scholars and others, these homes offer a tantalizing sense of what is possible, even on a modest budget. Grouped by country, the residences establish a sense of local context--from the elegant use of Scandinavian wood to the imaginative use of narrow plots of land in Tokyo. Fully indexed, with an array of maps and world data charts, The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture is destined to serve as a unique reference tool. But the geographic organization encourages you to just open the book anywhere and make a discovery--perhaps the surreal vision of Ake Larsson's Icehotel (carved from ice and snow), or the forest of Cor-ten steel pipes Jose ABP Forjaz used in the Mbuzini Memorial, or the startling shed forms of Rick Joy's Tubac House. --Cathy Curtis

      Book Description

The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture presents a global survey of the most outstanding works of contemporary architecture from around the world completed in the last five years. Organized geographically and illustrated with global, regional and sub-regional maps locating each building, the book illustrates more than 1,000 completed buildings, and includes some of the most influential projects as well as many lesser-known buildings from around the world. Sections on World Data, Building Data and Architect's Biographies build up a detailed picture of the influences on contemporary architecture today. Every building type, from the largest publicly-funded art museums and airports to private houses, is covered, and each project is illustrated with colour photographs, line drawings and a descriptive text.

For the visual historians among us, An Atlas of Rare City Maps is a cartographic feast. It presents 40 map plans of cities in Europe, Russia, the United States, and Asia--all published in the 19th century by England's Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, and all commissioned and drawn within a period of 13 years. See Munich, Calcutta, Dublin, and Warsaw, Madrid, Moscow, and New York as they once were, and relish the hand-colored, hand-lettered steel engravings. The maps are artistic gems, representative of an era of skill, and reproduced in fine detail.

      Book Description

The map-plans in this collection of forty cities in Europe, Russia, the United States, and Asia were first published in the mid- nineteenth century by England's Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. These maps were all commissioned and drawn within a period of thirteen years, presenting a unique opportunity to compare urban development among 40 cities in 19 countries at one moment in time. An exquisite feast for the eye, the hand-colored, hand-lettered steel engravings are artistic masterpieces in themselves, representative of an era of exceptional artisanal skill. They are reproduced here in fine detail in an oversized format.
The Atlas of Rare City Maps includes both well-known European and American cities such as Amsterdam, London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, and Venice, as well as smaller cities like Calcutta, Edinburgh, Hamburg, Lisbon, Marseille, Parma, and Stockholm. An introductory essay by Melville C. Branch discusses the historical evolution of urban design, and provides a background on engraving techniques. Branch also evaluates each map-plan, remarking on the details of each engraving and the evolution of the forms of the cities, their histories, and demographic characteristics.
This rare collection first appeared in its modern form twenty years ago in a limited edition (Arno Press); long out of print, this book has been much sought after by architects, urban planners, and map enthusiasts everywhere. Princeton Architectural Press is proud to make available once again this valuable resource.

Discovered Atlas of Rare City Maps at Micawber books in Princeton, NJ. The college student/clerk said it was her favorite book in the store. I read it. Loved it. Gave it to the City Administrator in our town. He's so delighted by it that, after skimming it, he decided to read it one city at a time; like a morning devotional reading!

      5 out of 5 stars Comparative design.......2000-06-10

This book contains some of the loveliest reproductions of old maps I have ever scene. Aside from the beautiful pictures, the author includes interesting and valuable commentary to help the reader understand these city plans in the context of history and geography. All those interested in urban design should read the eloquent forward of this book. It would be highly beneficial if more of our political leaders, and just people in general, understood this era in urban design- the end of the traditional and the beginning of the modern. With the help of this book, perhaps we can bring about a new commitment to intelligent and beautiful urban planning for the future.

5 out of 5 stars This is an amazing book!.......2002-03-02

I had the honor of studying on scholarship at the Martha Graham School in the summer of 1994. I was given this scholarship by Diane Gray, the director of the school and a woman who was given many of Martha's roles after Martha could no longer dance them. It was such an honor to train in that school knowing it had been founded by such a genius as Martha Graham.

This book itself is, in my opinion, the best record of Martha's art. This is a legendary and important work for the dance world. "The Kick," which is featured on the cover of this book, is perhaps the most "iconographic" picture in dance history. This book even includes pictures of Martha with her then-husband Erick Hawkins, as well as with future Modern Dance legend and innovator Merce Cunningham, in a dance Martha created called, "Every Soul is a Circus." This dance was one of Martha's few forays into comedy.

Martha was a genius who changed dance forever. And this book helps to insure that her legacy will continue.
If you can afford it... and you are an admirer of Martha Graham, I would recommend getting this book.

5 out of 5 stars Two Amazing Woman together..........2000-08-08

Barbara Morgan, did a wonderful work with Martha Graham, she captured the essence of the movement, she took so many pictures of the early works, such as Frontier, Lamentation, Primitive Mysteries, that you are able to feel what the piece is about, also the size of the pictures in the book, gives even more credits to the Author. Graham Classics, Satyric Festival Song, and Deep Song, have been reconstructed with the help of Barbara Morgan pictures, in the late 80's, even Martha agreed that the actuals versions of the pieces are close to what she did... This is a book to have in your Library if you are a Friend of the Art, enjoy your new book.

                            Book Description

The increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics, and pests to pesticides, threatens to undo some of the most remarkable advances made in public health and agriculture during the past century. Though the potential consequences of increased antibiotic and pesticide resistance are far reaching, regulatory efforts to address the problem are at a very early stage. Battling Resistance to Antibiotics and Pesticides moves discussions forward by presenting cutting edge research and the first comprehensive application of economic tools to analyze how antibiotics and pesticides should be used to maximize their value to society. Laxminarayan and his contributors explore lessons from past experiences with resistance, especially in agriculture. They consider what incentives would be ideal for the individuals who prescribe or apply antibiotics and pesticides, and what would be ideal for the firms engaged in developing and producing these products.

The chapters in this groundbreaking book reflect the fact that efforts to combat resistance will require contributions from a broad range of scholars and professionals, representing a broad range of expertise. The analysis in Battling Resistance demonstrates that, for all these participants, an understanding of economic issues is an essential complement to a knowledge of medical or biological factors.
